4.9 out of 5

Like most of my other Arcteryx jackets (I own 5), this too is a winner for both the way it looks and superb, build quality. I wear the Beta to work, out in the field, and on cool mornings through dense fog. Though size XL is long in the sleeves by 2 in. (properly turning them up and over without noticing later on), the overall fit and length is very good. Hoods are useless when you wear hats. They not only typically block my vision, but deatachments should always be mandatory; this is not a premium accessory. Therefore, I always pay particular attention to the collar length/height for additional style and practicality in sometimes very hostile weather. This is a serious light-weight but substantial outdoor jacket for anyone who wants comfort, style, and substantial protection from the elements.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, unique color, Cons: no detachable hood
January 20, 2012
Likes: The cut, the water proof protection, breathability, ease of moveability, and zippers under the arm pits to open up the coat and cool down. Dislikes: I was most surprised that the zipper pull/lanyard was not as durable as other coats I've had and looks a bit on the cheap side although it doesn't effect the function. Also, just a note about color. I purchased the "nightshade" color thinking that it was grey. Indoors it looks blue grey; however the zippers are a green color and in outdoor lighting the color is more green. If you like green, this color is for you.

This is my first Arcteryx shell. Have gone through quite a few other brands that didn't have the quality of this jacket. I use this for work in the outdoors. I've been used to HyVent and AquaDry, so this will be my first GoreTex since the one Uncle Sam provided 10 years ago. The first thing I noticed was the ease of movement in the arms and shoulders. I am 6' and 205 lbs. Plenty of arm length in a large. A little snug around the middle over a fleece, but then I'm a little thicker there than I'd like! The front, as advertised, is a little shorter, but still long enough. The hood is plenty big, but has enough adjustment to be useable. The price did require me to do some creative explaining to my wife. Overall very satisfied.Pros: freedom of movement in the arms, lightweight, Cons: expensive
June 21, 2012
This jacket is my go to jacket when the wind picks up or the weather is coming in. It is super tough and handles rough off trail hiking with no worries. It is expensive, but the amount of abuse and wear I have thrown at it would demolish lesser jackets. I am 5'10" and 170 lbs and a medium is a great fit. As a disclaimer, I am affiliated with Gore for product testing of Gore-tex and Windstopper garments for the purpose of product review and recommendation. I do receive items from Gore for these purposes.
October 23, 2012
This jacket has quickly become my favorite jacket. It works great as a stand alone jacket with a thermal layer underneath because of its ability to block the wind. It also allows you to layer up without feeling bulky. I've had this jacket in wind, rain, and plenty of snow. Nothing gets through it. I love the pit zips. They come in handy when backpacking and you start working up a sweat. The material seams to be real durable. The draw cords around the waist are great too. I am 5'10" and weigh 185 and have a large and it fits perfect.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Cons: Cost
October 13, 2012
This is a very expensive jacket but mine has served me well for 7 years of regular use. I can go for a distance run in it for an hour or two in the rain and when I take it off there are no wet spots on my shirt. I mountain bike and commute in it all the time. As with any shell, running or biking in it can get a little warm but it opens up to cool off pretty well. It's a very comfortable jacket. I'm 5'10", 140 lbs. and the medium fits nicely on the loose side to allow for layering. It is very well made and durable. Details like the Velcro, zippers, and drawstrings will work almost as if they are new years after you've had it. That being said, I've had a seam around the waist cord separate and a bit of Gore-Tex de-laminate on the shoulder at the contact point with backpacks; the Arc'teryx warranty is taking care of it at the moment. I wouldn't recommend a jacket this expensive if it wasn't extremely good quality, but it is, and I do. Divide the cost of the jacket by its lifetime of 10 years or more and it's not a bad deal.Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, waterproof
November 16, 2007
Light as a windbreaker, warm as a coat, roomy and keeps you warm and dry. Definitely get this one if you can afford it.
June 05, 2005
April 28, 2004
It's a great jacket with the classic high quality of Arc'Teryx. Like other Arc'Teyx shells, it is built from 3-layer Gore-Tex XCR, which is very light but has great breathability. It also has 2 large pockets and the cool waterproof zippers. It's comfortable to wear and has excellent fit. Basically you wouldn't be disappointed with any of Arc'Teryx shells.
April 27, 2012
A great shell that is bomb proof. It does fit true to size and it allows me to wear up to two layers under it. I bought it this last winter and it never failed to impress me. Highly recommended!Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value
December 07, 2011
This is pretty much a perfect jacket. I have been drooling over Arc'teryx for a long time now and finally decided to take the plunge. Leaving in a temperate climate I often find myself in rain, heat, and cold, sleet, snow. Get a little bit of it all. Just the jacket is perfect for 40-65 degrees. Any colder and throw a fleece underneath and you should be good to go! At first I thought the sleeves were a bit to baggy until I started moving in the jacket soon I realized they were like that for a reason. Range of motion in the arms is great.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Cons: Cost
Couldn't live without it.
December 19, 2002
I really couldn't live without it. It rains a lot in Minnesota and nothing has kept me as dry as this. Plus the Gore-Tex, as we all know, is such an amazingly breathable membrane. It can't be beat.
light and warm
April 04, 2005
Expensive but nice
November 10, 2009
This jacket is incredibly light, but because it is full gore-tex it is totally bombproof. It is shorter than most of the Arc'teryx jackets, which I think makes it more versatile. Only drawbacks are that it does not have a stow able hood or an inside chest pocket, but these are minor issues. One caveat, Arc'teryx sizing is generous: I wear a medium in Spyder and most other brands, but needed a small in the Beta AR. Try it on for size at a local store before you order from Altrec.
Great Design - Looks, Feels and Performs Great
January 15, 2008
There are a select few purchases that you make that are among your timeless favorites. This jacket is one of those. It pays to read the reviews... Great service. Great product.
December 08, 2011
Since I've got this, I've been using it almost everyday to commute by bike. The ventilation works very well, so I never get moisture even if I sweat a lot. very comfortable one!Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Cons: Cost
The best there is!!
May 16, 2002
I have worn my jacket the last 2 ski seasons with no complaints. The Gore Tex XCR is keeps all moisture out. No other company spends so much time on little details. The taped seams around the zippers are reason enough to buy this jacket. The Beta AR pants make for the ultimate ski/ backcountry gear there is.
light and unpenetrable
January 16, 2004
it weighs almost nothing....and cannot be penetrated by anything....its practically bulletproof...its a little shortcut in the front...but if wearing a harness...its perfect...the hood is sick and keeps your head dry...

Better Beta AR
March 10, 2005
My second Arcteryx jacket is the Beta AR. Wanted something more durable than my Theta SL for heavier use . Like them both. Current Beta AR is improved over old models with fully welded hems instead of stitching, longer back and better pit articulation.Beta Ar pants are great as well, fit and articulation is great. Nothing is perfect in this world, but Arcteryx pleases me.
Jack of all trades
October 18, 2010
At first, I bought the Theta AR jacket (2009), which was made in Canada. I was so excited about that, since all of Arc'teryx moved to China. The only problem was that the Theta fit really boxy and was down to my knees. I considered ordering a small, which I really didn't want to do.. I considered just getting the Beta, but that didn't work because it would still be boxy and really short. Well, Arc'teryx solved literally all my problems I had, and came out with the new line. All of the Beta AR jackets are made in Canada again, they fit better than any shell I have owned. They made it almost 2 inches longer than the older model. They revamped the zipper, which before gave me problems, when the waterproof sealing started to fall apart with my Alpha SL. Anyone that has the older models, or hasn't tried Arc'teryx before, you HAVE to try this jacket it out. It is the perfect 4-season shell, perfect for skiing, backpacking, or anything you need some protection. They did raise the prices a little bit, but I will pay a little bit more for it to be made in Canada still.
Produit de grande qualit
May 23, 2005
Great for skiing
October 07, 2012
I am 5' 10" and weigh 165. The medium is perfect as it allows for layering. Very comfortable and waterproof. It appears that durability will be very good.Pros: Great design, Build quality
Made in Canada
October 31, 2011
This is one of the only Arcteryx jackets still made in Canada. This is the perfect all around Arcteryx jacket out there. I'e had the Theta SV, but this packs smallers, and is still tough as nails. Plus, this one still says made in Canada (as of Fall 2010). I'm not sure why they decided to make this one in CA still, but I'm not complaining. It's actually one of the reasons I went with the Beta. This jacket is not as long as the Theta or Alpha, but still provides enough coverage to get the job done whether it's hiking, traveling, or even some days in the snow. Buy this for your perfect all around Arcteryx jacket unless you want more coverage or a sports specific design.Pros: made in canada, Cons: no seat covereage
Couldnt be more pleased
February 02, 2005
If you want top quality clothes there is really only one choice and with the design that comes with it... outstanding. I couldnt be more pleased.
January 23, 2004
really good jacket, fished in it in hard cold rain. Skied in it on wet slushy snow and was great could be a tad bit longer in the front.
Great Shell - Trim fit
January 24, 2005
Light, fits great. A little stiff out of the box.
Rounding out the collection.
September 13, 2006
I have the Alph and Theta and now the Beta. Each has a specific focus of function all would make an excellent go to jacket in rough conditions. The Beta is shorter but still keeps you covered when you need bullet proof protection. It has the typical Arc'teryx best in class quality, great fit and it has the look.
May 07, 2011
The updated design is cool and the color Big Sky is beautiful. It is made in Canada and the overall look is simple and great. Performs very well while skiing. Like it!
February 01, 2005
I ordered my jacket from atrec.com because it was the best deal compared to all the major outdoor stores. I knew if I went to the store and try on the product to determine what I want, I would then know what to order online. I then compare value. Trust me, there was no one out there that was able to give me a great deal than altrec.com.
February 22, 2012
Status Quo, this Arc'teryx jacket is super good. All of the tape seams and zippers are impenetrable to the elements. If you like a minimalistic jacket that will do exactly what you expect in any circumstance, go with this. It has one pocket on the inside that is good for essentials.
February 06, 2005
This is a great jacket that is very confortable and light weight. I live in a very cold climite in the winter (-25) It would be nice if it was a bit heavier and a little bit longer in the front, it is much smaller in the front than the back of the jacket. It will be a geat early spring and fall jacket, I don't think there is a better jacket out there for that time of year.
This is HEAT!
September 22, 2003
I got this jacket after going through 3 Gore-tex jacket in 10 years. I like this, because of its hip length(works great with harness), two pockets provide nice hand warmer, and waterproofness (it may get a little hot, but you can open arm pit zip) I wish I can roll the hood, but not a big deal. This jacket is HEAT!
Functional & Fashionable
January 10, 2008
I was looking for a new jacket that looks good and is waterproof. From the day I got it, I'm wearing it every day. As others have mentioned, the jacket is really light but keeps you warm and dry. And for the fashionable part... people keep asking me, where I bought this cool jacket!
It's Great jacket
September 29, 2006
October 05, 2006
This jacket is great for its waterproof qualities, but it also has a unique style/cut. I have a 50 inch chest and a 35 inch waist, so most things either look too large on the bottom or too tight up top. This jacket looks amazing (fits like a glove) and still allows room to layer a fleece underneath. The only caution I would give others thinking about purchasing this particular jacket is that the hood is not removable, which makes it a bit more cumbersomebut welcomed when you get caught in a storm. Highly recommended jacket!
Great fit and awesome color
July 11, 2011
I'm a fairly skinny guy and could not find a right fit rain jacket until now. The Beta in S runs true to size, fits me like a glove. The quality is incredible - the stitching and all the details are taken care of; the gore-tex fabric feels really soft and it is easily packable. I'm glad i went for this jacket - i bought the one in color blue and the Altrec image depicts it very accurately - it's a very refreshing color. It's an investment but by the looks of it, this jacket will last you a lifetime. My wife has the women version of this jacket and while caught in many rain storms, it held up great and she was dry all the way. Thank you for offering a great product.
Perhaps the most well-balanced and versatile
December 02, 2010
With plenty of shells and jackets to choose from the decision can be difficult. For 2010 Arcteryx has returned to Canada to manufacture this jacket. There have been notable improvements, not only to the material itself, but to the overall length. Whereas before this jacket was considered a bit "short" by some, it has been lengthened about an inch or so for 2010. Arcteryx hit the sweet spot. With this jacket it seems perfect in terms of length. Rather than have the lightweight SL (Paclite) and a 3 layer Pro shell, this 3 layer shell jacket does the trick. Very flexible for hiking, backcountry, skiing, and rainwear. Plus, I think the Big Sky color and combo is remarkably stylish and a nice change from the previous season. This is a light jacket but it doesn't feel insubstantial or that it will tear or abrade easily. I want durability, too; this has it. The fit seems to be regular as with most Arc products. Not too slim with decent room for layering.
September 24, 2008
I love it. Sleek and lean, its a bare bones shell with 3 pockets and an awesome hood.
Very good jacket
May 07, 2008
I strongly recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a high end product for winter and wet climate. It is a bit short in jacket model, so I strongly recommend it with a tall trousers.
The Ultimate Shell
April 02, 2010
For me, this is the best hardshell I've owned to date. It is totally waterproof, tough as nails, and extremely versatile. I've worn it in 15 degree weather with an Atom LT underneath and was totally comfortable, as well as on warmer rainy days with just a Capilene 1. My crazy Black and Tan Hound has attacked it numerous times while on walks, and it has never even scratched or torn. I highly recommend this shell.
Outdoor clothing raised to high art
January 31, 2005
Right after I received the beta AR jacket I got to put it through it's paces in a severe storm on the Oregon coast. It was a case where you really do get what you pay for. This jacket was absolutely dry, wind proof and didn't flap in the wind. Extremely mobile athletic cut and perfect stitching. I've used several parkas over the years from top makers, but this definitely is the best of the best.
October 18, 2009
I LOVE THIS JACKET. Be careful though, layers need to be worn to keep warm during winter days. But it is so unbelievably versatile. I use it hiking and to get around Boston in the worst of winters. I might even try it out snowboarding this season!
March 23, 2011
I've owned and skied in a wide variety of outerwear over the years, and I can say without hesitation, this is the best garment I have ever owned. I have skied in temperatures ranging from -20 degrees (two base layers, a 100-weight fleece, and an Arcteryx fleece sweater, fleece helmet liner -- just a little too warm) to +60 degrees (just a tech teeshirt under) comfortably. The wind-resistance is supreme. The hood is easily adjustable and totally helmet-friendly. The high neck means I can keep my face warm without a neck-up on all but the coldest of days.
very awesome, nice, perfect.
September 17, 2006
very awesome, nice, perfect.
November 05, 2003
this is a full-on 4 season xcr shell that is bomb-proof and featherweight! at this price you can not let this one get away! the hood adjustment is a 3 way design that is the best i have used. Cinder is a nice dark grey with a blueish tint.
beta AR is great to me!!!
November 13, 2012
This has to be one of the lightest, most sturdy jackets ever made. It is bombproof when it comes to wind and rain/snow, but is so light and the cut is just loose enough, it feels like you aren't wearing a jacket. The only way this jacket could be better is if it kept you warm at the same time! As a disclaimer, I am affiliated with Gore for product testing of Gore-tex products for the purpose of product review and recommendation. I do receive items from Gore for these purposes
June 28, 2011
Outstanding rain jacket, Since I got it, I don't fear any cold weather, it could protect me from heavy rain or wind. At the same time , it 's very breathable. Same with other Arc'teryx items, it has a high quality made.
October 20, 2002
I just bout this Jacket yesterday, but I close it over the TNF (The North Face) equivalent. The detail and quality are amazing and it is so light you just have to try one on to believe it. I paid $270 for mine and think that was a steal for what you get. I highly recoment this jacket to anyone that wants a light jacket.
Just about Indestructible.
October 20, 2011
I use this jacket during the fall and spring months. This is the best hard technical shell I have ever had. I sized up this jacket to a large (usually I take a medium 150 pounds 510) so I have no problems layering. This is a very well made jacket and water proof jacket. I have been in many downpours and have stayed bone dry. If you ever want to test the quality of a jacket take a rock and rub it against your sleeve. When you rub it and you see tiny fibers you know the jacket is of bad quality, this jacket does not make any tiny fibers. I have fallen down many times during slippery conditions and this jacket still looks and acts like the day I got it. If you want the best hard shell that is practically Indestructible look no further.Pros: quality, water proof
Excellent, lightweight waterproof shell.
January 21, 2010
I like this shell. It's very light and waterproof. I was able to wear a number of layers comfortably and stayed warm and dry during several icy New England storms. The zipper is easy to use. My only complaint is that the hood is not detachable.
Light weight, multi purpose
May 31, 2005
First 5 stars go to Altrec for it's excellent prices and great customer service. Arc'teryx's Beta AR Jacket is a great all around jacket. If I only had one jacket this would be the one. The short cut is more functional than a parka and it is longer in back so that it doesn't ride up during activities and can be cinched tight to keep the weather out. Layer up or down depending on the conditions and stay dry inside and out with excellent breathability.
vrey good, not great
December 13, 2003
first arc'teryx purchase, had always been marmot and north face customer. quality and design are very good, though the jacket could be 2 inches longer all the way around. definitely order up if between sizes. does its job well, and looks good doing it, just a little short on the cut.
October 22, 2009
This jacket rules and it makes me feel special. As a citizen of the Roaring Fork Valley I ski alot. I am also just generally in the mountains much of the time. This jacket will keep you dry and also make you feel good both inside and out. I need good gear and Arc teryx makes it. If you see me on the hill you can bet it won't be in a Starter Jacket.
Great lightweight jacket
January 01, 2004
Great jacket for climbing and skiing. The short length is nice and helps avoid the jacket getting tangled with a climbing harness. There is no powder skirt, something to keep in mind in the context of your ski pants (i.e., bib or not, etc.). Nice lightweight, bomber jacket for tough conditions.
May 28, 2005
I've only had this jacket for a short time but it's already my favorite. As usual with arc'teryx products, you can tell the quality as soon as you put it on.
Best All Around Jacket
May 12, 2011
Here my basic stats: 5'10" 165 lbs. General uses: Resort and backcountry skiing, spring and fall hikes. I purchased the medium and have been nothing but pleased with the jacket's performance! At my size plenty of room for a base layer and mid layer of medium thickness. The helmet compatible hood works fine with my helmet and stays in place on fast downhill descents. The main front zip is easily pulled up or down with a gloved hand and proved to be totally waterproof. The hem drawsting keeps the snow out on powder days very well. The interior pocket works great for a phone or other music device. The side pocket are very spacious and hold all ou could want to carry. Price is a little high, but it will last forever! Wore my at least 35 days on the mountain and it looks new despite brushes with trees, and a number of yardsale falls!
True Waterproof Protection
December 11, 2012
The Beta AR is a versatile waterproof shell. The construction is high quality and the material is tough and durable. You don't have to worry about getting wet with this one. The fit is true to size with plenty of room for layering. Personally I like the longer cut and fit of the Theta AR better, and the pricing of the Theta is only slightly higher. They're both amazing jackets so check them out.Pros: quality, durability, waterproof
Best in its class....can be improved
January 23, 2005
This jacket is wonderful. It does what I want it to do. The length is great..not too long, not too short. The pockets work well, and the quality is impeccable. The watertight zippers are a bit higher in friction, and I'm not too sure how they will hold up in the long run. It seems the zipper coating may wear quickly. Also, with a bit of freezing, operation becomes a bit more difficult, but otherwise the best product of its kind. Maybe if they added a bit of stretch, slimed the fit slightly, and improved the zipper (which I think they already did only on the Alpha), it would be pure perfection.
ultra expensive but sweet!
November 06, 2003
This ultra-light waterproof shell was way way too expensive but it is an excellent product. Every seam is welded and was flawless. I stood in the shower for 10 minutes with water on the zipper and zero moisture penetrated. Realize, it offers zero insulation but that's why you would wear your normal clothes for the climate your in and just put this shell on if a downpour occurs. I really paid too much but it beats trying to lug a hefty raincoat if you're packing. If weight and quality is your concearn, take out a loan and buy this product.
great product, well designed
January 27, 2005
what a great jacket..been a while since i bought my last gortex so I was expecting a lot from a new one... nicely cut giving ample elbow and shoulder room..beautiful jacket
Excellent all-around rain jacket but.....
June 02, 2011
This is a nice rain jacket using the best materials on the market. The fit is excellent. I can't wait to test it in rainy days. However, I have to return my jacket first and order another one. The first jacket I received is defective on the laminated drawcord hem. This is the first time I have an issue with Arc'teryx products. For the price they ask for, this quality defect is not acceptable. They should do a better job. Hopefully the second jacket will restore my faith in Arc'teryx again.
January 11, 2005
Men's Beta AR Jacket is defied convention when they shaved ounces while redesigning their athletically-oriented Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket. This waterproof and breathable hiking, climbing and mountaineering shell features no-lift gusseted underarms.
Light and tough jacket
November 14, 2004
I have had the beta AR jacket for almost a year now and used it almost everyday (it rains quite a lot here) and on several hiking trips and on skiing. I had the North Face Mountain Guide jacket for 4 years before that. The greates advantage of the jacket is that it is extremely light and even after a year the water protection is as good as on the first day. I really enjoy that it is a light jacket compared to the Mountain Guide jacket that is more heavy. It gives more freedom to move around.
October 07, 2010
When the world falls apart, and you can keep only what you can carry, bring this shell with you. It is virtually indestructible. Back length is perfect - long enough to cover midweight layers and keep your backside dry, but not so long that your thighs hit it while walking. Cut is also roomy enoughy for bulkier layers underneath, but looks fine by itself. Only concern is that it is a little thick and slightly stiff, but it's a pro shell, not Paclite. It breathes extremely well for its weight and is reasonably packable. This shell will work exceptionally well in all condiitons and in all seasons.
May 24, 2005
Greatest Jacket in the world. VEry light and Durable! Arcteryx is the best item I've ever met!
February 22, 2013
After continuously adding less expensive jackets to my collection with various benefits, I kick myself for not splurging and buying this or similar sooner. The pro gore tex is well worth the investment and feels bullet proof. Great for a verity of conditions and able to layer underneath for below freezing temps. The hood is bulky but can be adjusted. I appreciate its design to fit over helmets and can adjust. I rarely have use for this need.Pros: water proof, wind proof, durable, comfortable, Cons: price, buckley hood
Peformance and style is second to none.
October 02, 2009
This jacket combines the very best in endurance, fitting, comfort, and style. I use this jacket for everything from skiing and climbing to a rainy ride in the rain. The neck opening is however a bit large and snow often comes this way :o)
April 25, 2005
Let me start by saying that arcteryx is the best brand period. It blows away all others: MHW, TNF, Cloudveil, etc. The jacket is perfect size and made for athletic purposes. It repeals all weather and keeps you warm. Also, altrec is the best because it is has the cheapest gear anywhere and it ships very fast. Its a win win situation.
excellant lightweight waterproof
November 03, 2003
excellant waterproof shell. very scuff/tear resistant, all zippers are laminated, pit zips are perfect for keeping cool in heavy rain
July 03, 2012
First Arc'teryx I've owned and I have to say it is built like a tank. I rated it 'hurricane proof' but that is based on observation only. For the soggy South, it's been extremely dry here since the jacket arrived. Build quality is excellent even though the jacket feels like it weighs nothing when compared to another 3-layer Gore-Tex shell I own.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Great value
June 29, 2004
Well designed durable shell
Best damn jacket I have ever worn!
January 10, 2002
I like this jacket for many reasons. I love the lightweight, minimal material way it is built. The zippers are great and the hood works terrifically. I would recommend this jacket 100%.
Excellent shell for skiing
December 24, 2009
Arcteryx quality is the best, regardless of being made in China. I wear this shell with the Hercules soft shell, an Icebreaker sweater and an Icebreaker base layer to ski in 20 degree + weather. My entire upper body is always comfortably warm whether it's snowing or clear and sunny. I'm 5'9"/165 and the medium fits well.

Nice jacket, that's all you can say, it has the standard arc'teryx features, like water-res. zippers, 3 layer XCR, zipper-garages etc., it's great to wear. The hood is the best feature, just one pull and it fits perfect! Now lets see how this Jacket works when I'm wearing it on Mont Blanc in summer!
Great Jacket But

This is a great jacket. It is Very confortable and works well in many conditions. I live in a cold climite and it snows a lot and is windy quite often and this jackets stands up very well. The jacket is a little short in the front and it would be nice if it was a bit heavier. It is not really desigined for cold weather (-25). But overall it is a great jacket.
