Top notch quality of course. I needed a warmer jacket this year but I wanted it to be light, breathable, and rugged. This jacket is perfect for that purpose since it is a soft shell, plus it offers some insulation. Compared to my lighter Mountain Hardware soft shell (it's the Alchemy I believe), the Gamma seems to shed water and subdue wind better. Having a hood on my main soft shell is awesome for those wet and windy days since it cinches down perfectly, even over a climbing helmet. And I love the fact that the tall collar is separate from the hood, perfect for just zipping up to keep the wind from getting in around your neck. I'm 5' 8", 150 lbs, and apparently have a size large torso according to Osprey packs. The small Gamma fits perfectly.

I purchased the men's Gamma SV Hoody (Black) in Large. I am 5' 10.5" tall, 190 lbs, and semi-athletic build. This durable softshell features a casual fit and mild insulation when worn over casual clothing. When worn with insulated mid and base layers the fit is tight yet retains high mobility as advertised. The shell's wind protection properties safeguard thermal layer performance while retaining excellent breathability (as compared to Windstopper). Outer fabric is not rough or noisy yet appears durable. The sleeves do indeed run long but are not excessive. The "drop back hem" may not provide "full seat coverage" for those of exceptionally tall and slim builds.
Overall, I am absolutely satisfied with this product as well as Altrec.com service.

Bought this jacket to replace a Millet soft shell I had for 7 years. I'm 5'9", 190 and the Large was the right fit. I wanted something warmer than a soft shell (eg Patagonia ascentionist) with a hood while avoiding the bulkiness of a full ski parka. This jacket has exceeded expectations. It is insulated so I can't wear it if the temp is above 40 due to the Polartec insulation on the core and it can be layered very easliy - I use a Patagonia R1 for days under freezing and a NF polortec 300 fleece for days under 15F. Fortunately on the east coast, you don't get to many ski days above 30F so this jacket will succeed 90% of the time.
Some flaws - the pocket system is weak so if you are carrying a phone or ipod, you are likely to be using the inside check pocket instead of a single zip pocket on the chest like the Millet, MH or NF in the same price point.

Anonymous - 2009-10-13Great techincal soft-shell for all but the heaviest downpour
Amazingly breathable, yet windproof and warm jacket. The fit is fairly athletic, so not a whole lot of room for layering bulky insulation underneath, but for all but the chilliest days, this is a cozy shelter. There is very little lift in the body when reaching overhead, and overall mobility is excellent. The jacket is also extremely light and thus is not in any way restricting when scrambling, skiing, hiking etc...
I cannot comment on the long-term durability of the jacket as I have only had it a relatively short time, but I am optimistic about the Polartec material as thus far, it seems very tough, shrugging off tree branches, thorns and the like easily.
The hood, being designed for a helmet, is absurdly large for a bare head, which can be irritating if it starts to rain anywhere one finds oneself without a helmet (which I personally find is most of the time). That's about the only complaint tho!

I have spent the last year on a quest for the best softshell. TNF, Mtn Hardwear, Marmot, Patagonia, Outdoor Research, and Arcteryx. I've tried probably 15 jackets. The Gamma SV is definitely the best of the bunch. The fleece lining keeps you warm, the polartec powershield is tough and yet stretchy. Drop tail in the back. Hip length in front. Collar detached from the hood.
Get the jacket in your size and it will fit. I'm 5'10" 170lbs. Medium is perfect.

I had been contemplating buying this jacket or the Gamma MX. I'm so happy I got this one! Im 5'10" 180lbs and the jacket fits perfect, and looks great too in the red. The jacket has a tapered cut to it which is really nice. The inside is super soft and the outside seems extremely durable (SV) severe use. I wish Arcteryx would slide the front zip pockets down just a bit.

Anonymous - 2009-11-28Great jacket, though not as tapered as I expected
After having an arcteryx easyrider, I really wanted to get an arcteryx hoody for skiing. I did not take this jacket out, but the easyrider has performed brilliantly while skiing in the freezing rain for 4 hours (only slightly damp inside, amazing for a softshell with no hood). Arcteryx softshells are incredibly well made, and my decision to return the gamma just came down to fit.
I'm 6'3" about 175 pounds with broad shoulders, lanky arms, and ordered a large. My only issue is that it was a bit too boxy in the body for me. That said, just about every other brand is way boxier than Arcteryx. I'm going to try marmmut as their european roots will fit me better, plus their laser jacket has pit zips and thumb holes. Please note that I never really felt the need of pit zips in my arcteryx softshell, but with a new brand for me I appreciate that peace of mind.
Anonymous - 2010-02-05Not as good as it used to be...
I bought the Gamma SV Hoody as a replacement for my old made in Canada Gamma SV. In short, the quality of the made in China version simply is not as good as the made in Canada version. The front of the SV Hoody appears wrinkled, like the material can't lay flat and the overall appearance isn't as nice as my old version.
