Fit Tip: This item is semi-fitted. Item fits true to design, and has room for range of motion and comfort.
This highly technical jacket combines snow and water-shedding properties with enhanced mobility features--the perfect combination for mountaineering or extreme backcountry skiing conditions. The Malden® Powershield stretch nylon face is laminated to a hydrophobic Polartec® inner fleece layer for waterproof insulation properties.
Great Jacket
It fit well but just a little bit too tight and too short in the front. I am 5'11 175 and a medium is too small.
Great Jacket
I have only had this jacket for a few weeks, but so far I am very pleased with it. It fits well, looks great, and is very comfortable. I'm 5'8", 165 lbs. with a longish torso and the medium fits nicely. I bought the jacket for back country skiing and once winter hits (hopefully with a vengeance!) I will then know how the jacket really performs. Of course, the Arc'teryx quality can't be beat.
Quality materials and good athletic fit
I was deciding between the Gamma MX and the Gamma SV. I am happy that I chose the Gamma SV because it seemed a bit softer and a bit warmer. My goal was to find a good layering piece that I could use in sub-zero temperatures and that would also work as a light jacket on its own. The SV is cut really well for me (5'8", 160 lbs, jacket size 40) and looks sharp. From what I hear and read, the materials are better than almost all other soft shell options. From what I saw while shopping around, I would agree completely. I am very happy with the purchase.

comparison to gamma mx
a brief comparison to the gamma mx for anyone like myself trying to decide between the two. i own the sv and have tried on the mx quite a few times.
the mx is slightly thinner, which is probably the polartec surface rather than the interior microfleece lining.
Both have arms cut slightly long, and longer than the normal arcteryx cut of their sweaters etc, but this is great for cycling.
the mx has alot of room under it, i guess with the idea of layering in mind, the sv fits closer but still with enough room to get a thiner fleece under it.
as the mx is thinner and looser, it hangs on you a bit too limply and frankly doesn't look as good as the sv which holds its shape and looks much more jacket like.
the mx has better placed pockets but i think they are smaller.
the more recent versions of the sv have one hand hem draw cord, the earlier ones just have a rubber button.
i had been under the impression that the mx was the better jacket being more expensive and seemingly more popular but thats not so, if fact i much prefer the sv having tried them both but although not having tested the mx out in the elements. the sv fits and looks better over just a base layer and as its slightly thicker is probably more durable and will cope with lower temps. the mx is probably better suited to layering and hotter sweatier activity.
my personal experience of the sv is much as the others, its excellent. so far i haven't tested it in a heavy downpour, soft shell material can be quite spongy and soak up the rain (north face apex fabric) hopefully the polartec with the micro fleece lining will be resistant. i also have the marmot genesis shell which is completely waterproof.
i would like to have a detachable hood on the sv. its very comfortable to wear, nice and stretchy, you can forget your wearing it as theres no little annoying things, its comfortable to wear as a jumper indoors too.
not surprisingly it can get warm during activity in the (uk) summer but it breathes well so doesn't get sweaty, the lining seems to absorb and wick it.
soft shells have made my hard shells virtually redundant and arcteryx makes the best soft shells. i have 4 shells and the sv is my favorite. i would have no regrets about paying the full price for the sv given the quality, versatility and how long it will last.
I love this jacket
I had been looking for a shell like this for sometime. I am always warm, so I wanted something that was neither too heavy or bulky. This fits the bill all the way around. It was very comfortable last week in both 30 degree temps as well as 55 degrees. Great material!
Durable, Stylish, and a
I received this jacket for Christmas in 2002 from a friend before moving to Aspen, Colorado to become a ski bum. This jacket will shield the wind and the cold for reaching your body, but does not become uncomfortable when you walk indoors into the heat after being in the cold.
Also, 4 years later, there is very slight discoloration at the sleeve openings and at the stitching by the main zipper (I have the Black Gamma SV).
This has been the most durable and amazing jacket that I have ever owned.
Excellent all around jacket -many uses, many years of service
One of the first soft shells and still among the best. Excellent for variable conditions and activities. Fit is accurate to size
I LIKE IT!
Great piece of canadian quality
Outstanding Quality
First time buyer and can easily tell these products are not made in China. Soft feel but the water beads off just like a hard shell. Will certainly buy from Altrec again.
Jacket Stays Dry No matter what
This jacket simply rocks-It's durable, water resistant and highly breathable. It really dries out fast! I love to wear it as an outer layer but I have a feeling that I will need another layer in the bitter cold. The jacket also looks really cool- I get compliments daily.
great Jacket
very warm Jacket !!
nice fit, high quality
I always find it useful when the reviews tell me how a garmet fits because there's so much variation within brands. I'm 5'11", 165-170, size 42 jacket, 35 sleeve,, and bought a medium which is roomy in the shoulders and plenty long in the sleeves. It hits about hip level or a bit lower. It fits nicely under my Arc'teryx Javelin SV parka (medium). I expect this to perform like other Arc'teryx products, i.e., very well. I bought it in June on sale so can't verify the wind protection, but I expect it to work like other Polartech Power Shield gear.
Extremely wear resistant
In addition to the excellent breathing properties, thight fand comfortable fit and build-quality, I was most impressed by the toughness of the material. I have used my jacket for four seasons of ice climbing as well as for general outdoor use, and apart from some very slight signs of wear on exposed surfaces such as edges at the side of the front zipper, there isn't even as much as a hint of breakdown anywhere. I can use it everywhere and it's simply agreat product!! BTW. My Gamma SV has a collar drawstring at the neck, perhaps the feature was dropped on later models?
Well thought out garment!
All of their garments are top shelf. I bought this strictly for layering under a shell in the winter. Have not had a chance to wear it in cold conditions as winter is over!
Totally Awsome!
If you need a Jacket that fits like a
second skin this is the one. No frills
it just gets the job done! Now I can concentrate on the task at hand instead
of the limitations of a inferior jacket!
Soft Shell
Rockin Jacket, sizes are a little small so be sure to check them out. These guys rock and are willing to help out in anyway!
very warm for its weight.
Great jacket, it is warm and light and allows unrestricted movement. Only issue I have is that the hem drawcord does not stay cinched all the time. It tends to get loose. Thanks altrec.com for upgrading my shipping to second day air for free. Great service as always.
Fantastic jacket, serves me well
I waited a couple of months to write this review, wantin to experience if this softshell jacket served my purposes.
I can only say GREAT!
Being a professional licensed tennistrainer I was looking for a jacket with unrestricted movement possibilities, warm, wind- and reasonable rainproof and also very important: good breathing capabilities.
This jacket has it all! Arc'teryx is well renown for the perfect fit of their clothing gear and I must say that again I was not disappointed. You look sharp and even sporty dressed in this fine softshell jacket.
It serves my purposes and still is worth every Dollar/Euro

Excellent quality jacket
Well constructed, great range of motion and very warm for a light jacket. Great on its own for fall days and will be a perfect mid-layer for when boarding season starts up.
Best buy!
I bought this jacket 3 years ago and use it nearly daily in spring, winter and autum here in switzerland. Great piece of canadian quality, that still looks as new, despite of hard using during trekking, skiing etc.
great jacket
surprisingly warm for the thickness. a little tight around the waist, which is totally my fault! but i'm all over that. the arms are a little long. but thats ok as the cuff is a tight fit. looks great if you have that tapered body to fit that tapered jacket. i love it. good 3 season jacket.
Great All Around
Service. Price. Product. My first purchase from Altrec and I will buy again. The SV is wonderful. Cannot wait for cooler weather.
Great looking
This jacket has a perfect cut and fits well , I drive a Jeep with out a roof to work and back in winter and it blockes out the wind verry well Grear buy
Smooth
This jacket is bomb proof, sleek look, good mobility and chicks dig it!
Great jacket
Solid constructions, classic Arc'Teryx quality as always. Excellent fit, it actually look much nicer when worn than shown in the picture. This jacket is quite warm, sometimes wish it have pit zips for better venting.
No company better
Arctery'x quality is second to none. Jacket fits snugly around chest and shoulders but stretches and moves with you.
Have many Arc'teryx products-- and they are simply the best. Patagonia a close second
Looks good, work good what more is there to say?
This is the best softshell out there and I have some from TNF and Marmots also. It fits as if it was tailored for you and it stretches when you need to move even with extra layers. Arcteryx makes the best outdoor technical clothing. What more needs to be said!
Awesome
only the best.
Makes me wish winter lasted longer
Superbly constructed, great fitting, solid performer.
Awesome
I've worn this jacket almsot 24/7 since I got it and have completely loved it. Its great as a outer layer for warm snowboarding days, or under my hardshell for the colder days. But its best for just wearing around town, provided the day isn't to warm.
Simply the best
This jacket is exactly what I was expecting, given the reputation that Arc'Teryx has gained in the industry. I have a Bora backpack that is just great and that, coupled with the fact that I am a proud Canadian (albeit one who lives in the US) prompted me to make this purchase. The jacket is very warm; I wore it recently in New York City during the recent cold spells, and it kept me warm in temps down to the low 20s, including in windy conditions. It fits well, but I definitely agree with some posters that, like other Arc'Teryx clothing, you should take one size up unless you like very tight fitting wear. Bought the same jacket for my wife and she just loves it. It's also very stylish; I've got the black version and it's very attractive. A can't miss buy in my view, I plan on having this jacket for many years, the only problem is I'm afraid to take it camping for fear of getting some campfire cinders on it and burning the precious thing!
buy it
this jacket is sick!! great range of motion and it is pretty warm. does well in light/moderate rain and it's even better in snow. I've had mine for two years and it still performs well. Excellent buy
Highest Quality
Arcteryx certainly have gained the distinction of the top manufacturer of technical gear and wear
RULES!!
If you're into multi-sport (bike, ski, fish, etc..) this is an excellent buy and can perform in many functions (base, mid or outer layers). My core temp is always up, so this + mid-weight base layer is perfect in cold weather (skiing or steelhead) Love it!!
The best softshell jacket on the planet!
The best softshell jacket on the planet...bar none! Looks fabulous on the town and performs flawlessly on the mountain.
best of the bunch
This jacket delivers and more! Have worn it in in cold damp conditions in the Canadian Arctic. The quality is unsurpassed. Laminated polartec and excellent build quality...I just just keep adding Arcteryx gear like there's no tomorrow!
Nice looking, warm jacket.
This jacket fits great and I really like the looks. Great windblocker and repels water very well. Very happy with the purchase.
This is the best jacket for your money
If anyone knows quaility you know the Arc'Teryx name. They have been the pioneer's in outdoor technology. They were the first to introduce the waterproof zipper, anyway. The lining is an excellent fleece material, it doesn't collect any lint and it is bonded to the skin, not sewn. It is quite waterproof and windresistent. I've worn it in storms and its kept me dry and warm. It is also very abresion resistent, don't listen to what people say how it gets worn if you wear it while backpacking. It is simply the best softshell in the market. Much better than the Patagonia Coreskin or MHW Alchemy.
Great Jacket
Great jacket! I have the Theta AR as well; between these two jackets, I will never need another. Arc'Teryx products are so far ahead of Patagonia, North Face, Mountain Hardwear and Marmot when speaking of pure comfort, durability and the overall quality of all of their clothes. Great investment!
The Perfect Jacket
This is the awesomest jacket I have ever found. It is so incredibly versital. I have worn mine in freezing winter conditions, warm summer showers, and everything in between.
I have not found it to be as warm as everyone else says it is. I am comfortable in it on a gusty summer day to a colder fall day, but anything colder, like skiing, demands a fleece underneath.
It is very waterproof, with only my forarms and neck getting wet sometimes. It is fairly windproof, but is much more breathable than a hardshell, and it can get cold when it is really windy. Usually another layer solves that problem.
The cut is close and short, but the strech makes up for the close, and the short hasn't caused any problems. It fits well. I don't like the outside pockets much, though, because whenever you put anything in them they bulge outward considerably.
It is pretty durable. I have taken it over a lot of rocks and such, and it has never caught or anything. However, a few strings have pulled out a little from the fabric, and the corners of the seams are looking worn after a few years. The wind tab behind the zipper is softening and curling, but none of these has had any effect on performance so far.
The price is high, like all arc'teryx products, but the quality is even higher. If you find this jacket on sale, buy it. It is a great jacket that you will wear all the time. You won't regret the expenditure.
The Ultimate Jacket
You won't find a better soft shell. Comfortable, very warm (leave at home if over 40-45 degrees) water repellent for light rain, wind proof, enough pocket room for your stuff and don't forget the uncompromising, fit and fitness of Arc'teryx. I have a Theta shell and I'm buying the Theta ski pants. I am an Arc'teryx man!
the canadians make it right
if you want a piece of technical outwear get the people who know what cold is to make it. arcteryxs is made in bunaby b.c. we canadians know how to make it better. this jacket is godly, the water just beads and rolls right off when it hits the surface. i find it unaceptable that a small budget candaian company can out do you million dollar companies. all the north face could muster was some free climb jacket wet suit thing. i am a total hardwear nut but do to my disapointment in the alchemy i have looked towards my home grown gear and ill never look back. it stretches with a snap. i manged to strech an xl out to about 4 feet. ifyou want the products made right get em from the north!!!!
Sharp and Snug
I like the look and fit, but it is not as warm as I expected. The fit is snug (I'm in between a med and lg), allowing for only light layering. The look is in the "flight jacket" style - waist length. Quality is high as I come to expect from Arc'teryx.
Great Jacket but Pricey
Brought this jacket last year. It was rather pricey but as other reviewers note the quality is top-notch. Its either pay for canadian workmanship or get something made in a far off land where workmanship may not be as tight. Overall a nice jacket suitable for both outdoor use and casual evenings. The only thing that would make me reconsider the purchase of this jacket for the price is the lack of pitzips. Having some pitzips might help and allow for more versatility in wearing the jacket. Thats the one and only thing that turns me off about this jacket. As it stands now its good for light rain, snow(I took it up to whistler and it worked fine) and windy days. Either way still a good jacket and for the price I paid I'm going to be using it for a loooooong time to come...
Great in the Rain-
The Gamma S/V Jacket is your best friend on a chill, rainy day. Its my favorite jacket.
excellent
excellent jacket, well made, two good pockets but of course expensive for what it is. I had a similar marmot shell/fleece that was about $50 under.
Very nice jacket
This jacket is a very nice jacket. All that I would expect from ArcTeryx. I recommend this jacket as well above average.
Good in many ways, but not great.
Since buying the Gamma SV jacket a few weeks ago, I've had the time to test it out a little bit, and here are my impressions:
While the construction is remarkable, the jacket's strength lies in the fact that it is "a Jack of all trades," that is to say it is a pretty good all around jacket, and packs a lot of features into it's shell. Good in many ways, but not top-notch in any.
I have however, not found it to be as warm as some of the reviews claim. It is a very good jacket if you plan on layering. With a light base layer and thick sweater, using the Gamma SV as a shell I've been very comfortable down to 35 degrees just walking around. Anything colder, you might want to use the jacket as an underlayer.
You can, on the other hand, stay comfortable in temps reaching the high 60's/low 70's with it zipped open etc.
It is pretty good at stopping wind, and light-moderate rain. The only main gripe I have is the way it fits. The SV is made with a rather short cut, so anyone over 6' will notice that it rides up. I got a large, and while it fits fine in length, it is a tad baggy in the waist and chest, but it leaves me more room for layering, so what the heck.
Also, a problem I find with many performance jackets/shells is that the collar opening is overly large and somewhat baggy. This allows the wind and cold to come in, and lets the warmth out. If that Gamma SV had a collar drawstring, it would be a big plus, but you can always add in a gaiter scarf as there is plenty of room.
The Gamma SV feels good, and looks good, but I highly suggest you try it on before buying as the sizing is a little different from other brands I own (TNF, Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, etc.)
Also, while it is a very high quality jacket, I would try to find it on sale like I did, as I can't say that it is worth the full retail price. If you can get it at a discount, and you are looking for a good all-around 3 season jacket, then I would say go for it as it is a good alternative to other fleeces and shells....
Great Jacket
I purchased the Gamma SV for a spring skiing trip out west and was certainly not dissapointed. Tempatures ranged from 20 degrees (F) to 38 degrees (F) and the jacket kept me plenty warm. Cotton t-shirt and light nylon pullover and the bibs of my ski pants were all I needed under the jacket even in 30 mhp winds in 20 degree weather on the top of the mountain. I bought it because it looked great and hoped it would keep me warm. Plenty warm enough. From the experience I had, I am confident that the addition of a fleece pullover would be enough layers to ski in mid-winter conditions. This is a great jacket.
One hell of a jacket!!!
This is a great jacket. I highly reccomend this or any Arc'teryx to anyone looking for high quality gear. This one of the best light weight, breathable soft shell I have ever owned. It keeps you warm without making you sweat. In light rain and coffee spills I have found the liquids to just run off. I have to admit I was a little nervous about the price tag, but now I feel it was worth every penny.
Excellent Jacket
I absoultly love this jacket. The only thing I would suggest improving on would be to add pit zips. Sometimes when you are inside with this jacket on it gets a little warm. It breaths extremely well and sheds rain and snow also. Since I live on the east coast sometimes the snowboarding conditions aren't always the best and when it gets a little warm I can now just resort to this jacket without fear of being cold. It blocks both the wind and the water which you encounter while snowboarding. This is a great jacket except that the price is a little steep. If you can find a deal like I did on it I would highly recommend you purchase it.
Abrasion resistance not good as advertised
Sticker bushes caused many pulls in the shell material on my first outing. The company wanted no part of repairing it at no cost! Very good detail but you have to worry about where you hike.
A fleece and light rain shell in one jacket.
I bought this in order to leave two jackets--my Arc'teryx Theta AR and my Delta Jacket--in the car, and I have to be honest: it does the job and then some, but, better if you live in a colder climate that South Texas.
I heat up easily, and hiking in this jacket is best left to cool days on flat surfaces, or chilly+ days if going up (figure, below 55 degrees on the former, or below 45-50 on the latter). The Powershield seems like it could survive a machete battle, repels light rain and snow just as they say, and does give some level of breathability. I love the stretchiness of the fabric, and wish I had bought the later model with the neck cinch: this is the only gripe I have about this garment.
Overall, Arc'teryx deserves its sterling reputation for attention to detail, outright inventiveness with an eye for function more than fashion. My Theta AR fits as though made for me (no small feat for clothing lacking stretch of any kind), and this jacket couldn't help but do as well.
My value rating of 3 indicates my hesitation to view some of this modern outdoor clothing prices as anything resembling reasonable. But, if you hike/climb, or just like to style around in excellent outerwear, and are willing to pay the price, this jacket is incredible.
disappointed
the jacket fits well repells light rain.I found that wind cuts through a lot more . Jacket only seemed to be only 60 percent windproof. Wearing Jacket around town with light shirt at 45 degrees it felt very cold.over all I was disappointed in the performance of this Jacket
