Excellent for work and play
November 10, 2010
This is my go-to jacket for just about anything involving inclement weather in the frontcountry- it is waterproof enough to handle light precip, and windproof. The added insulation is both extremely comfortable and makes it a much more useful garment than a simple softshell. The range of temperatures- from the 50's down to the 20's, means that it can work in the autumn and spring, and even in the winter, alone on top of a shirt. The fit is true to size. The look is great. In the backcountry, I tend to use it less often because it looks so great I don't want to mess it up- I tend to save it for the city. But I have used it a lot in bad weather in the Whites in New Hampshire, as a midlevel layering piece or as an outer garment over capilene. Once again, in this environment the temperature range is great, especially in winter when you need some warmth and lots of breathability. In full-on winter conditions I would always carry a bomber parka in my pack for rest stops. I've used it for ice climbing because I worry about making holes in my hardshells. I think I would use it less for extended mountaineering but for single pitches on ice it has just enough warmth, comfort, and flexibility that I prefer it over a hardshell and the piece itself is bomproof.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, temperature range, great looking, Cons: CostAwesome hoody
January 04, 2011
I purchased this hoody before my trip out to Kabul, AFG as an insulation layer for my Alpha SV shell. With my shell and this hoody, I've never felt cold out here in 10-20 F weather. This hoody is not windproof and I wasn't expecting it to be. The fleece lining is super soft and definitely feels like it keeps you warm. I'm 5'11" and weigh around 190 lbs. I have a 42" chest and 34 waist. I went with the large after trying on a medium. The medium actually fit a lot better, especially with the arm length but it fit too perfectly in the chest area. I felt that I wouldn't have any room to layer anything under the hoody. Because of that, I went with the large. The large in the chest area gave me some additional room but unfortunately was a bit long in the sleeves. So, unless you have long arms, a large will probably look too big. I'm going to probably try to get a Medium when I get back since the sleeves are too long and that I really didn't have to wear anything too thick underneath the hoody to stay warm. As usual, Arc'teryx quality is superb and this hoody is no exception.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Cons: CostGood Jacket
January 05, 2011
I am 5'9 150lbs and I purchased a medium. It is very comfortable but you will only be able to wear a base layer. I wore it with a t-shirt in 30 degree weather in NC mountains and I was fine. Overall an excellent jacket.
Mens Hyllus Hoody
July 14, 2011
This hoody has a great fit very well made, quality zipper. Looks great where ever you go with it. Very warm as a jacket and great midlayer when the temps really turn cold put on a hard shell for maximum protection to keep the elements at bay. If you are looking for a great hoody take a good look at this it will not let you down and may just become one of your favorites it truly is one of mine.

Nice jacket for some applications
November 29, 2010
I've owned this jacket for 2 years, and have owned 4 other Arcteryx jackets. The Hyllus (Hercules) is a good jacket, but it's Achilles Heel is it's lack of windproofness. It has typical top-notch Arcteryx quality and fit, and the fabric feels great against the skin. However, it's only somewhat warm if you aren't in the wind. As soon a slight breeze blows, its cuts thru this piece and evaporates any warmth inside. Granted, it's better than fleece alone, but for the money, you're probably better off with one of the Windstopper jackets, and Atom series, or a fleece/shell combo. The other thing that drives me crazy is that unless you have it zipped up all the way, the ends of the hood drawstrings stick out in your face and bounce all over. They really need to attach them to something or hide them in the jacket better. It also lacks the soft fabric on the chinguard that most other jackets in this price range have. Overall it's been a decent jacket, but for the money, you can do a lot better.
NICE!
November 08, 2012
Like most Arcteryx jackets the Hyllus lives up to the hype. It's warmer than you think for the lighter weight, and the quality is second to none. The fit is pretty athletic, so it's a little tight through the chest when wearing a heavier shirt, but the trimmer fit is what makes it work for layering. Although it's a great jacket the pricing is on the very high end of the spectrum when you consider the waterproof insulated jackets that are available. This one is water resistant but it won't keep you dry in a downpour for very long. All in all, it's the best choice I've found for a versatile, almost year-round jacket.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Cons: CostHyllus Hoody fit and usage
March 25, 2013
First of all I am not a "small" guy.. But I am not obese. This piece of kit is GTG - as long as you are operating around 25 - 35 Degrees Fahrenheit and your not going all out in an aerobic event. The jacket is WARM but really does not breath well enough for heavy duty cross country skiing or running.. The fit is slim - and if you have ARMS then the biceps are gonna be a little "confining." Not bad - but not tight enough to keep the heat in.. Great for more leisurely activities (walking, hiking without a heavy pack) but I still have not gotten the chance to test it out in a static position. Its light, well made, warm, good piece of gear.
Pros: Build quality, Performance, Cons: a little confiningAlready own the Arc'teryx Hyllus Hoody? Tell us your thoughts.
Good Jacket for not really cold weather
March 03, 2013
The jacket is really good for style and quality, and also keep your warm in cold condition, but if you are looking for a cloth which can protect you in really cold and windy condition, this one might not be the right choice. But overall, it is great!
Good Jacket

I am 5'9 150lbs and I purchased a medium. It is very comfortable but you will only be able to wear a base layer. I wore it with a t-shirt in 30 degree weather in NC mountains and I was fine. Overall an excellent jacket.
Pros: Build quality, Cons: CostHard Fleece
January 22, 2010
As advertised by Arc'Teryx, this piece further blends the mix between fleece and a hard shell. +The inside is quite warm and the insulated hood is a nice plus. A strong DWR repels light rain well and is more than sufficient for snow. As for the fit, I'm 6'1" 195lbs and i have a Medium with some (but little) extra room. Now, this jacket is very (read: VERY) breathable, a strong wind (20-30 mph) will cut right through it. Now, depending on your use this is either good or bad. Basically, its great for regulating body heat, but don't plan on standing still in a heavy wind, either put on a shell or get moving. Oh yeah, as with a lot of their jackets, big style points (if you care). I've had more than a handful of compliments. All in all, a good piece and my go to right now, but i sure do miss my Patagonia Mixmaster.
Great for the cold!

This hoodie is great when its down around 45, without a baselayer, any colder than that and you need to start layering
A Good Item
November 06, 2009
A first-rate piece (like most Arc'teryx items), though it seems not quite as technical as most Arc'teryx pieces. Thanks to the high-loft fleece interior, it has kept me warm in single digit F temps in the Adirondacks at the start of a trip up a peak, and kept me warm again at the summit. Also kept me warm during Columbus Day snowstorm in the Adirondacks while camping in a lean-to. It feels less fitted than most Arc'teryx items, and more comfortable. The hood is also fleece lined, and it keeps my ears warm. Its exterior fabric feels like any other Polartec Powershield, but Arcteryx says it is Powershield O2, which it claims is more breathable. It does not have a wind flap, which is too bad, but I can't say it bothered me too much even in moderately windy conditions.

Awesome light weight warm Jacket
January 13, 2010
Perfect arm length and snug on the end. The hood fits well. The front is slight longer than Marmot and North Face, which I like. The inside is warm fleece and it fits great. Love this jacket, great design.

Awesome Jacket! This Arc'teryx jacket is the winter jacket winner of OUTSIDE magazine. So I bought it. I am very satisfied with it. It's very warm and very suitable for middle layer in the winter. Moreover, it 's lightweight, so I will feel very comfy with it when winter come.
Do Everything Piece
January 06, 2010
It's a soft shell with the insulation of a nice fleece. Great layering piece. Can be used for most anything and in many kinds of weather. Lightweight, yet still warm for those of you mountain climbing, biking, etc. Can be paired with a hard shell on a rainy day! :)
A superb general-use winter softshell
November 04, 2010
A terrific, slim-fitting, long-in-the-sleeve-and-torso softshell with excellent warmth, and good wind-resistance. It's super-breathable, and it's my go-to for all but the hairiest winter conditions. Buy one!

Stylish, practical, and very light. Can be worn on the slopes or on the cold night in the city. It protects you from the elements and helps you be warm and look cool in the process. Great jacket!
Good from far but far from good
March 01, 2010
I consider myself to be a loyal Arc'teryx customer but I have to say that I was very disappointed with the overall quality of the Hercules Hoodie. From the internet pictures as well as the reviews I read i was expecting a jacket that would be bulletproof for the money (even with a discounted price). The arms were too long and the material felt flimsy. I own several pieces of clothing from Arc'Teryx and have never been disappointed until I tried the Hercules on.

Great Jacket
September 23, 2010
The jacket was all that I expected it would be from the brand name. The in site loaf was great for the weight and the wind protection was also great. A jacket to use out doors for camping with just a silk shirt so to not have to over dress. Over all great jacket would recommend to a friend.

Worth it
January 10, 2010
I originally hesitated to spend so much when I knew I could get similar jackets for about half as much, but working at 5,000 ft in all kinds of weather I wanted the best. This is all around the best fitting, toughest jacket I have ever worn. It might not be rainproof or a wind stopper but it is darn close to both. On really cold days I wear a level 3 base layer underneath and thats it, no big, bulky, puffy parks. The hood is great, and I like how it has a little bit of a brim to keep water from dripping down onto your face. I have laid in the dust and dirt and left it in the back of a dirty pickup and clean up is just a wipe down with a wet rag. If you play or work in an area that has frequent weather changes, and know how to layer properly in really cold weather this is the jacket for you.

Light warm and fashionable
January 21, 2010
My friend who is crazy for outdoor activities ordered this and I am just the "messenger" to receive it and ship out since he is living outside of the United States. Once I got it I am in LOVE with it right away. I know very little about cold weather jacket but this is such a light, warm, well design and fashion looking jacket, and great material too. I am ordering another for myself.
Near Perfect

Great softshell. Blocks nearly all wind but breaths well. Keeps you warm. Water beads right off. Another great product by Arc'teryx. Don't hesitate. Buy it.

Quality gear, if a little pricey
December 25, 2008
I have to admit that I was taken aback at first by a $350 hoody with a "Made In China" tag, as I was buying Arc'teryx by reputation only. An inspection revealed that the construction was acceptable. I've had the Hercules for a few weeks now and can say a few things about it. It is very warm for its weight. I was able to replace a military surplus parka that I'd been wearing. With proper base layer, the Hercules was easily able to endure a few 10F nights without missing a step. Again, very light and very warm. It sheds a decent amount of water and absolutely stops almost all wind. I sort of wish that the main zip was taped, but that is not a major complaint. All in all, if you catch it on sale (as I did), then I can recommend this soft shell as a solid buy. The fit is spot on and it will also draw some comments from its looks.
Best winter jacket
April 19, 2010
I can't believe I can get it by such a low price, I had liked this jacket for a long time, it 's the OUTSIDE award owner and worth this title, Its style is a little simple, its only a logo of Arc'Teryx is on the back, what impressed me most is its warm and windproof, I can go anywhere with it in the winter. Thanks Altrec.com, I finally got my favorite jacket.

Perfect softshell
October 12, 2010
I was so excited to get this jacket, I was looking for a decent softshell that would be good with and without layering for the slightly colder weather and this is perfect. Super comfy and it will keep you warm enough. I haven't tested it too much yet but it will keep you dry in slightly wet weather, I have a hardshell to pair it up with for more severe weather. I got the deep dusk and the color is pretty true to what the pics show. The fit is great and will still allow layering. Couldn't be happier with this jacket. It's Arc'teryx, so yeah it's expensive, but I also know it will last forever and do what it's supposed to do!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, PerformanceHyllus Praises
October 13, 2010
This is a great backpacking softshell. The sleeves are well tapered and don't snag or catch on gear or ropes. The shoulder seems don't chafe. The hood is soft enough that it doesn't poke you in the back of the head when you are looking up. As far as the wind resistance goes, it is not tornado proof but for me this is a good thing because it keeps me from overheating. The breathability is great. This is a rugged jacket. I highly recommend it.

One of the best articles of clothing I've ever purchased
January 02, 2010
This thing is just awesome. So comfy with that shaggy inside layer and yet very sleek looking on the outside. having the hood is vital to me. i just wore it in 6 degree (minus 9 with wind chill) weather as a midlayer. with expedition weight base and a gore tex shell i was toasty.
I love it!

Another Great Arcteryx Product
January 11, 2011
I really love this jacket. When I pair it with a MH down vest, and Arcteryx gloves, I am happily warm in any weather under 30 degrees. When you tuck the gloves into the wrist opening of the jacket sleeves, no wind gets through even if the wind chill brings the temp into the teens. I have BOTH versions with and without the hood. I used the hooded one to snowboard because the hood is large and fits easily over the helmet. However, without a helmet, the hood is too loose to just put over your head. I am grateful for the zippered pocket in the arm - I use this for my iPod Nano. I like the tail of the jacket covers the butt...it may look funny when wearing a vest (like I do). Unfortunately, since discovering Arcteryx, I tend to buy anything they offer when it goes on sale since I know it is quality stuff.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of useQuality and fit excellent
February 11, 2009
I was pleased to see the usual quality and attention to detail that I have come to expect. I purchased a medium and it fit perfect with room for a layer or 2 underneath (I'm 5'10 & 160lbs). I wore it to ski on a windy day at Killington Vt and it was warm and comfortable to wear. It blocks some but enough wind got through to make me re-think what I am going to wear as mid-layers next time out.
Righteous piece.
September 16, 2010
Got this a few weeks ago and have used it a few times now. The most testing it has received was a 4-day backpacking trip to Rainier NP. We were on top of Burroughs and while my mates were putting on layer after layer, I was toasty warm and taking pictures in the 40+ gusts. I am 5'10" 160 lbs and bought a medium. It fits a little larger than other M sized arc'teryx products, but this is so you can fit a few layers underneath if you want to. The outer fabric feels very abrasion resistant, and i have yet to see any thread pull or mark on it. Do not plan on wearing a helmet underneath this, however. This is a true hoody (to fit your head) and the drawstring cinches down nice and tight even approaching ninja-esque. Everytime I purchase an Arc'teryx product I feel the need to rave about it. My gear closet is slowly becoming an archaeopteryx nest. Also props to Altrec. I ordered it late Saturday night, HOPING it would arrive by Thursday before this trip (ground shipping). I called on Tuesday because it hadn't charged my card yet and told the man I was hoping to get it for the trip by Thursday, he said he would expedite it and it arrived Thursday morning. Great service!

No more layering except for extremes!
February 08, 2010
After years of layering, I was looking for a cold weather jacket for skiing and biking that works around town. The Hercules is the one! Light, comfortable, and warm, I've spent the last three days shoveling 30" of snow with breaks to walk the dog. The temp has been about 11 degrees and I've been comfortable with the jacket and no shell. I'll save the shell for big rain storms! A winner!
Best Insulated Soft-shell Hoody IMHO
January 18, 2010
After searching high and low, there are other less expensive insulated soft-shells but the Arc'Tx athletic-cut fit is comfortable yet shapes your body. You know the rest... waterproof(ish) outerlayer, windproof yet has a wide dynamic temperature range. I bought Everglade (which I thought was yellow but it's more light olive-green). No regrets!
Very Functional Hoody
December 16, 2009
I own numerous fleeces, hoodies, and jackets. I must say, this "three in one" hoody beats them all! I own the Cobalt colored hoody, and the color totally rocks. The fleece interior is incredibly soft and incredibly warm. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and have been caught in intense wind/rain on numerous occasions and this hoody kept me dry and warm each time! This hoody fits true to size. I don't think I will ever find another hoody/fleece/jacket as awesome as the Hercules hoody. I recommend this product to anybody and everybody!

Best Jacket I have ever owned!!!
February 25, 2010
This is by far the best jacket I have ever owned. The inner lining is insane soft and warm. The weather here in Ohio has been in the teens-low 30's the last 2 months and I have rarely had to wear more than a short sleeve shirt and this jacket outside. Very waterproof, and true to size. The only thing I wasn't fully expecting was the taper of the sleeves on your forearms, but now that I am used to it, I actually like it better than big baggy sleeves. First ArcTeyrx product I have bought, and definitely will not be the last if quality is this high all around!!!

fantastic jacket!
September 02, 2011
It wasn't cheap, but I love this jacket. My wife purchased one last season and loved it so much I had to give it a try --- I was not disappointed in the least. It's very comfortable and extremely warm. If I had one complaint, it would be the sizing. I still haven't figured Arcteryx products out. I'm 5' 10"ish, 160lbs (avg build). When it comes to t-shirts and base layers, I'm a large. The jacket I ultimately kept is a medium, however. I originally bought a large but it seemed too baggy - if I was going to layer under the jacket (e.g., with a vest, etc) I might have kept the large but becasue I generally wear it over just a t-shirt, the large was just too big. The medium fits just right - I can wear a long sleeve t-shirt or maybe a thin sweater but not much else.

I love Arc'teryx Hercules Hoody jacket, only comparable with Hercules simply jacket, Arc'teryx Easy raider jacket or Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket that I have and love so much too. All this pieces have minimal but important differences, although nothing wrong. And yea, I am absolutely Arc'teryx fan, of course also have Alpha SL and others Arc'teryx jackets in collection, but not include in same use and materials category of the Hercules Hoody. Hercules Hoody is totally amazing, perfectly sized and beautifully in cobalt color. In addition, is really lightweight and I love the minimalist design. Thanks to Altrec, always a good shopping and on time delivery.
