Sabre SV - Excellent Shell
March 29, 2012
I bought this Sabre SV to replace my damaged North Face Free Thinker. First impressions of the jacket were that it was roomy with long sleeves and very large cuffs. I'm 5'8" at about 190 stocky build. The material is very flexible and feels like you could wad this up into a small sack. With my thin synthetic layer jacket beneath, the fit was just right. With my Denali, the jacket was pretty full, but still definitely ample. Finally got to use this on the slopes last week. It was windy and snowy on Mt Bachelor and it performed flawlessly. The hood cinched down without wearing a helmet. I stayed dry and warm, and had unlimited mobility. This is a fantastic shell.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueExcellent Jacket - Only small changes needed

Got this jacket for the 2012 ski season. My previous jacket was a Patagonia Primo Down and I decided to go for just a shell so layering became the priority. I've worn it 5 times and first impressions are that it is bomber! The fabric/shell is a huge step-up from my last jacket. Good amount of stretch to the jacket. I love how I can layer many items under it - Usually a baselayer or 2 and then some insulation such as down. I would make 2 changes to this jacket. First, I'd make it a bit more slim fitting. It is described as relaxed fit, which is a good description, but I'd prefer it to be a bit more trim. Second, it is missing a large internal pocket for googles, etc. Overall, I'm very happy with my decision to move to Arc'Teryx. The small adjustments needed are far outweighed by the performance so far.

Overall a great jacket with a couple things to keep in mind... Expensive, but comparable in features to other waterproof Gore-Tex 3 layer soft shells that are $500+ (Norrona, etc). Sizes are a bit odd. I'm 6'3", 185lbs and universally wear a large, although in this jacket a medium is perfect - even a bit roomy. I have lanky arms and these are plenty long for even me (which certainly won't suit normally proportioned folks). Hood is huge, which is great if you're wearing a helmet - and a little annoying otherwise (it's hard to prevent it from flopping onto your head every time you bend over and it's so big it covers my eyes).
Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, PerformanceSweet

Nice jacket, roomy cut, this will be very comfortable for boarding, sleeves will fit right over gloves. But overall nice lightweight design that will be fine to stuff into a pack when splitting. Fit is as described, relaxed. If you're in between sizes, size down unless you want really baggy. I went with my normal arc teryx size (medium, I'm 5'10 175lb) and it is perfect for fitting over heavy mid layers if need be but certainly not a sloppy fit. Never been let down with gore soft shell before, taped seams look spot on and expect nothing less with this jacket
Pros: Great design, Build qualityf'in love it

Best resort shell i've purchased to date. Top notch Arc'teryx construction (seam work is unreal). Awesome color (bondi blue) combined with a more relaxed fit than traditional Arc'teryx shells make this jacket a winner. The "fleece" lining Arc'teryx lists on their website really isn't much of anything other than a backside to the gore-tex soft-shell so layer up when necessary. The soft-shell is amazing - soft to touch yet hurricane proof waterproofing. It has yet to allow any moisture thorough during this epic Colorado winter. Also completely windproof - howling 40mph winds and whiteout conditions in Vail's backbowls didn't bother me at all - at least temperature wise. Highly recommend this jacket - well worth the coin-

High quality, waterproof shell. Light insulation, but nothing major. Fit is quite relaxed. The hood is gigantic, which is nice when wearing over a helmet, but it's a little awkward otherwise.

In terms of size: I am 6Â’3, 215 LBs purchased XL always have problems with sleeves being shot. This jacket has loose fit which lets you add layers underneath if needed and still provides enough length for the sleeves. In terms of weather: I just got back from Whistler BC. Unpredictable weather snowing, raining, gusting winds this jacket kept me dry and warm throughout all day. Also purchased ArcÂ’teryx Atom LT Jacket to use as mid layer but had to take it off after couple minutes of skiing was tooooooo warm, only used Icebreaker Long Sleeve Sprint Crewe as base layer underneath.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueVery nice

I've spent alot of time researching and trying on different jackets, before finally arriving at the Sabre SV. I typically run between size Large and X-Large, and in many models neither one fits quite right. Thanks to the relaxed fit on this model, I found that the large fits just about perfectly. The quality of the construction is top-notch, as you'd expect from Arc'teryx. I love the Goretex softshell material which is softer and more quite than the pro shell, while still being completely wind and water proof. Be aware that this is only a shell and you'll definitely need to layer for warmth. I tend to run hot and much prefer this approach so that I can vary the amount of insulation depending on the day. I also like the simplicity of the design... the pockets are high enough to not be in the way when wearing a pack, the collar is nice and high so you can tuck your face down in while on the lift on a windy day, it's long enough to give some butt protection, and with the articulated cut virtually any type of motion is un-impeded. I might like to see an extra pocket on it, but that was not a deal-breaker for me. Not alot of extra bells and whistles, but if you're looking for high quality construction, comfort, and durability, it's hard to beat. FYI, it's a bit of a looser, longer, progressive type of fit. I wasn't sure how I'd like the "bondi blue" color but it's definitely nicer in person. Unique but not too bright.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, PerformanceRoomy, warm and watertight

This jacket will fit over any base layer and keep you toasty. Arcteryx says the jacket is wind and water proof and after several days in the northwest - I believe them.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use
