Arc'teryx Men's Sidewinder AR Jacket (31117)

Deep snow runs, a sloppy drizzle at the mountain's base, chair rides in howling winds, all are no match for the Arc'teryx Men's Sidewinder AR Jacket. Designed using two versions of GORE-TEX® 3 Layer Pro Shell fabric, this top-of-the-line snow riding jacket offers an unbeatable mix of durability, protection, and supple, unrestricted comfort. The new, sturdy woven backer on the Pro Shell materials allows Arc'teryx to reduce seam allowances and seam tape width. This makes the jacket lighter, more breathable, and offers freedom of motion that is often lacking in snowboard and ski outerwear. Lamination technology improves garment strength while contributing to the Sidewinder AR Jacket's sleek look. The helmet compatible hood stows away when the sky is clear, and the powder skirt includes gripper elastic and a snap closure to keep cold snow on the outside, where it belongs.

  • Fabrics: High tenacity ripstop 380NR GORE-TEX® 3 Layer Pro, Highly abrasion resistant 480N GORE-TEX® 3 Layer Pro in high wear areas
  • Helmet compatible Stow Hood
  • Laminated die-cut Velcro® cuffs
  • Articulation in the arms and shoulders improves mobility
  • WaterTight, laminated front, pit, and pocket zippers with moulded zipper garages eliminate the need for bulky zipper flaps. Pit zips offer two-way adjustability
  • Sidewinder™ front zipper tracks to the side of the chin for optimal comfort
  • Laminated quick-dry chin guard
  • Two hand pockets and two laminated internal pockets provide a cozy refuge for chilly digits and delicate electronic gear
  • One chest pocket
  • Laminated Opti™ radio pocket with see-through window
  • Recco® avalanche reflector
  • One-hand pull cords are so convenient when your other hand is occupied
  • Laminated powder skirt with gripper elastic and snap closure
  • Micro seam allowances (1/16 of an inch, 1.6mm) and tiny GORE-TEX® seam tape reduces garment weight and improves suppleness
  • Weight: 23.2 oz. (658 grams) in medium

Fit Tip: I am 5'10",165 lbs and medium fits well. Roomy but perfect fit to allow for layering piece. Sleeve length allows for a full range of movement.

Minimalist excellence could use a few touches
I bought this jacket after considering the Sidewinder SV, which has gotten a huge amount of recommendations from the epicski.com community. Overall, the materials and construction of this jacket are the best I've ever seen. The jacket is not really insulated, which makes layering a necessity. I do wish that the jacket were a little bit longer (1-2") - I think the powder skirt would be more effective if that were the case. As it is, it is placed a little high to have much elastic strength around the right spot on the waist/hips. I also wouldn't mind one more pocket to make it easier to stow gear for the lunch lodge. That being said, this jacket and Arcteryx will be my preferred brand for the foreseeable future.

Even though this jacket is very thin and light it is amazingly warm, Wearing only a thermal T shirt with this jacket in snowing and windy -2C weather I was very warm and dry. It is by far the best snowboard jacket I have ever worn.

lightweight, excellent construction, versitile shell does it all
I have owned several other shells and this one by far blows them away! 1st it is made in Canada and it shows! the workmanship is excellent- the item is waterproof, lightweight and when layered works from snowboarding to climbing effortlessly- pitzips and lots of pockets make it great as well- the hood is nice (although I agree it is "thick" when wrapped up, but I let it stay out and avoid that) I wore it to board in colorado and it is great because it doesnt have the extra insulation that some shells do and this lets you adjust your temp with layers- windproof and it shows too! the fit is large, i usually wear a large in Arc'teryx and got a medium and it is perfect- enjoy

Arc'teryx is the best thing in British Columbia since Pavel Bure
For proof one need look no further than this Sidewinder AR Jacket. In a failed attempt to obtain a proper fit, I ordered two Men’s Arc'teryx Sidewinder AR Jackets: one Medium, and the other Large. Being 6’3” and about 165lbs, I’ve a rather svelte frame, having long limbs and a lean torso. Like a toddler playing dress-up in its Fathers clothes, I swam in the Large through the chest area, and the Medium might as well have been a tank-top the sleeves felt so short on me. What I needed was a bloody Medium-Tall (which to my knowledge Arc'teryx doesn’t make). Sooooooo, short story long, I hope that preceding soliloquy helps those (still) reading this whom are also of Scandinavian-esque proportions. At any rate, the jacket itself is brilliant. I had both sizes in my possession for a couple months while trying to talk myself into keeping one of them, and I must say, the Sidewinder AR really is quite a piece of craftsmanship. If you have only the slightest modicum of interest in, or appreciation for, technical garment construction, there is much here to admire. When one starts counting up all the individual fabric panels, the quality of the materials themselves, their meticulous assembly, and the thorough seam-taping throughout, one begins to realize where the Sidewinder AR price point came from; suddenly it doesn’t seem so exorbitant. But, of course it still does, and still IS exorbitant. Arc'teryx is out of their collective freak’n Canadian minds “eh", asking $450.00USD for a bloody jacket. It’s a jacket Arc'teryx, not a kidney. However, that being said, if you are of a body size that Arc'teryx deems ‘normal’, and can grab this baby on sale, there can’t possibly be a better made jacket on the market. The Sidewinder AR Jacket is an absolute paradigm of garment construction.

Don't even think about anything else
I am not going to write a huge review. All that really needs to be said has been done. I've had the jacket for over a year and used it from going to town to hiking to boarding. It's the best. Looks great, feels great, works great and is made by a great company. I will never go to anything else, in fact I am sold on anything Arc'teryx, plus it's local. The colour I have is that gray colour, so yeah, washes are a bit more frequent, but it looks so classy, you can wear it over a shirt and tie. The only funny thing I find is that Recco Reflector sets-off a few entrance beepers to the stores in the mall, only very few. I cover it with my hand and all is good. If you are reading this and other reviews, go get the jacket, period.

An undeniable ten!
An undeniable ten! I skied in TNF Mountain Light Parka and Jacket for years and I thought all of this hype around Arc’Teryx on the slops was for the pretentious crowd. I WAS WRONG. I used this jacket for an entire season of skiing at Northstar Lake Tahoe; ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. From the attention to detail to the overall comfort and fit this brand is going to claim the title as the best ski gear in town.

Light as Feather but tough as nails
I just got the jacket a few days ago and I love it. The only complaint I have is that when you roll the hood into the collar of the jacket it makes it stuff. Hopefully over time it should loosen up. I am going to France in April and can't wait to see how it really performs. I will update my review when I return.

The best there is
The Sidewinder is absolutely the best winter shell I have ever worn: ingenious design, tough construction, sealed zippers, stormproof fabric, and of course the trademark offset zipper for maximum comfort. The price is high but worth every penny. When you're riding your way out of a whiteout at 12,000 feet, are you going to want to wear some mass-manufactured piece of crap from Columbia, or high quality mountain gear?

Everything proof -
After recently purchasing the Arc Teryx Sidewinder AR, I can confidently say it is one of the best jackets/shells in existence. The thing is not only worthy to be called waterproof thanks to the goretex XCR, but element proof. Everything you throw at this jacket will be laughed away. Anything short of meteors, lava, and hurricane projected telephone poles won't be a bother to you. And the goretex XCR is amazingly breathable, so you won't feel like you're in plastic wrap if you get moving. This jacket has some of Arc Teryx's new seamless zippers, which are 'welded' to the fabric rather than stiched. This has a host of benefits, the main two being better waterproofing that doesn't need additional sealing and wind resistance. The main front zipper still has one small stich on either side, the hood zipper on the neck of the jacket has the same. There is excellent range of motion with the arms, and the powder skirt is a nice addition. The overall weight is fairly light, I consider this to be my new rain jacket for backpacking. And skiing. And biking. And daily use. Ad nauseum. The sizing is very good, the charts show me to be a medium, and the medium I ordered fits perfectly. A note to nitpickers: I ordered the jacket in the Kangaroo color scheme and the browns are decently lighter than what appears in the photo. My only semi-complaint would be the hood system. The hood rolls up on the back of your neck and is folded/rolled into a zipper pouch. This pouch could have probably been made bigger as the pouch currently puffs out, gets stiff, and feels rather awkward when the hood is rolled up and stuffed in. In conclusion, get this jacket. I'm confident I'll be wearing this for the rest of my life, and although it was a very large purchas on my part, I consider it worth every penny and don't regret it a bit.

Love this coat and love Altrec
I was at Vail last week and my Old Arcteryx softshell wasn't doing the job and I was shopping around looking for a coat at the stores. They were all overpriced so I called Altrec and they Next Day Air'd a jacket to me and I saved $50 over what they are charging at Vail. The Jacket is bombproof. It Keeps you warm without all the bulk. No complaints at all and superb customer service in getting it shipped next day air even though it was late in the evening.

Great Shell
I got the jacket at the end of December and have waited a month for a review. Since then, I have used it for an avalanche class, skiing at Alta, and some snow shoeing. Conditions have varied from sunny days to windy white out conditions. The jacket has excelled in all conditions and is fairly breathable when you start warming up. I normally take a medium so that's what I ordered and it fits fine. There's enough room for normal layering when skiing/touring. Very satisfied with the purchase. Arcteryx means quality....

Super Jacket
The Arc Teryx Sidewinder AR Jacket is a great addition to the serious outdoor enthusiast. I have spent many days skiing the Colorado back country with it this season and you cannot beat the lightweight durability, breathability, windproof, and waterproofness. It is not only good for skiing the powder, but also for hiking or trekking and is in my arsenal for winter Colorado 14ers. A great all around jacket. A few things that could be improved: The hood is slightly small for my ski helmet (Giro 9 nine size large), and if the hood is not carefully rolled it makes the neck of the jacket bulky when stowed. IF these issues are important to you I suggest you try it on before forking out the cash. Otherwise no complaints. An all around great product. You will not be disappointed if you purchase this product. It is a bit pricey, but I think I got what I paid for with this jacket.

Extreme Excellence
This is my 6th Arcteryx product - my 2nd jacket. I've always found them to be the best I have ever used. The only reason I bought a 2nd jacket is because I love my first one so much. Both are incredibly tough and durable and have kept me comfortable in many years of heli boarding British Columbia, and riding powder days and extreme dump days in the backcountry.

The Best
This is by far the best ski jacket on the market. It is "Bombproof". Compared to other leading brands such as Northface and HH the qaulity and detail is magnificent. This Jacket isnt for the normal person, it is someone willing to explore, wanting to be dry. The Jackets are made in British Columbia, Canada, showing the qaulity it has compared to Northface which is now imported. Northface started out small and meticulate but now new designers have gone cheaper and mass producing. Its tough to watch the highly noted brands such as Northface, Helly Hansen, Columbia, Burton and others get so much hype but not result. Arcteryx, Mountain Hardwear, and a few other small manufactures are the only companies that produce their higher grade gear in North America, leading to more meticulate work and result. The Arcteryx Sidewinder AR jacket is the ultimate ski jacket on the market. It withstands any weather nature offers, and doesnt show wear. Watertight zippers, 3 layer Gore-tex, Recco Reflector, Stowable hood, and other features prove qaulity. By looking at the stitching, and minor features it has you can tell that Arcteryx is going for result than mass production profit. This Jacket provides technology that only Arcteryx offers. If you formed a divit with the outershell with water in it, and wiped the water away after an hour, you find the water doesnt soak into the shell, but withstands like plastic. This jacket notably has the best materials and features available to get the best result when exploring the outdoors wether Heli skiiing, hiking, or multi day trips. I own this Jacket in maroon and have seen the best results there is to offer. Well theres a long repitious review, but take my advice, if you want the best go for Arcteryx, and specifically the Sidewinder AR. The experts say its the best!

Modern work of art
Over my long skiing/snowboarding career I have used many different clothing systems, starting with hand me down wool and windbreakers and finally coming to the Sidewinder and the minuteman. In that time period I was frequently cold and wet for many adventures. I also wore through many cheap outfits. I will never go back. This is by far the highest quality ski jacket that I have ever had the pleasure to use. The attention to detail is methodical, with tuck stitched seams, (so that repeated falls and extended use will never wear down the thread) high thread count, recco reflector, radio pocket which has many uses, and absolutely bulletproof fabric, this jacket might outlast you. It is definitely worth the price, and hey, it's one of the few jackets on the market NOT made in China. It is arguably the best ski jacket ever. Enough of my rant, I should really be paid for this.. I just love this jacket and anything else made by Arc'Teryx for that matter. A note on the Statue color, although it looks great, even sophisticated, (as far as ski clothing goes) it can really show off dirt and grime due to its lighter color. Definitely an eye turner.

Top of the line snow jacket
I have not had the chance to use this jacket yet, but I have been using a pair of arc'teryx minuteman pants this season and the majority of this jacket is made out of the same tough fabric. Because of that I can comment on the sheer durability of this garment. This jacket will take ice slides over and over again, and show no sign of wear. I have inspected the seams and they are first rate. Almost all of the seams are tuck stitched so the thread will not wear down from repeated falls. The jacket is very roomy compared to their fleece jackets. I can even put it on while wearing my down jacket. The Sidewinder is surprisingly lightweight for its features and tough construction. Much lighter than my previous snow jacket. One comment on their Statue color, it is gorgeous but is hard to keep looking clean. (naturally... its a light color) All in all I am very happy with this purchase and cannot wait until next winter to try it out. I am always impressed with Altrec's outstanding service and shipping speed.

Waterproof, sweatproof, huskyproof.
I'm sure if you're reading this you're familiar with Arc'teryx's awesome reputation of producing incredibly well thought out gear. With that in mind, I'll just highlight the interesting points, rather than waxing rhapsodic. First off, a comment on fit. This jacket does run large around... except in the neck. As it's a stowable hood system, unless you roll, fold, or otherwise stuff it into the collar with a level of precision I've yet to fathom, the extra bulk of the hood being there winds up making the neck a bit tight if you've got bulky lower layers on. The good news, regarding this, is that the inside of the neck is laminated with soft stuff that feels good against your skin, and you need less in the way of lower layers with this jacket than with other shells I've had. On a related, and somewhat ironic, note, the inner zipper guard flap, on the side of the neck to be out of your way in theory, needs some breaking in. At first the flap tends to be rather stiff and it poked me incessantly. I fidgeted with it for the first few days of having the jacket and it wound up softening up and behaving rather nicely. (I recommend a rolling motion towards the outside of the collar ...) Finally, a word on toughness. That word would be "wow." The jacket resists everything from being scraped over sharp, exposed rocks during a less-than-graceful wipeout on a snowboard to being gnawed on (without a trace of damage mind you) by a Siberian Husky with extremely sharp teeth. Buy this jacket ... especially if it's on sale.

Amazing shell jacket for skiing
This jacket is the best shell that I've ever boughten. I skiied with a Northface Mountain Light Jacket forever, and my friend recommended that I give this jacket a try. The quality surpasses what Northface puts out now, and this shell is extremely lightweight. There is a lot of range of motion in the arms, and protects very well against the wind.

Best Jacket I've Ever Owned
I did a lot of research trying to decide which jacket I was going to buy next. The sidewinder AR was by far the best choice, but the price was pretty steep. I got my on sale and I can say it has been worth every penny! It's a little stiff, but it's super warm and cut very well. It is made a with a little more room than all my other Arc'Teryx jackets so you can put layers underneath. Overall, it is a very warm shell. I would absolutely recommend this jacket.

Lightweight jacket
This jacket is outstanding. Lightweight and comfortable. The sidewinder zipper is worth it just for ease of use. This jacket is very light and all seams and zippers are clean and well made. The cuff velcro is well made and does not slip or need much pressure to make it stick. The hood is large and does fit over a leedom helmut. It is the only jacket I have worn that the hood actually fits over the helmut and fits well. The pit zips are easy to use and well placed. The radio pocket is large and very well placed for ease of use. The hand pockets are also large and comfortable. The only inprovement I would place on this jacket would be a reversable zipper on bottom of the jacket, but with the waterproof zippers that is not an option. It is a tought jacket and worth its weight in gold. I am using this jacket as my ski patrol parka at a small mountain in upstate New York.

I wanted to purchase the Siedewinder AR jacket for some time. There was Colorado ski trip comming up and I ordered the jacket to wear on the slopes. This is the BEST ski jacket I have ever owned. A little stiff, but impeccably built and wonderfully functional.

Great jacket but fit not true
As usual, high arcteryx quality but fit was a bit off. Overall fit was a bit baggy throughout.

Great workmanship
This is my second Arc'teryx jacket and the quality of the jacket, like my first one (Beta AR) is outstanding. My only quams about the jacket is that the pockets aren't too big, there aren't too many pockets, and unlike zippers with flaps, these are hard to pull. This may get better over time, but there is extra effort needed to open and close these zippers.

A couple of points
I purchased this jacket in '06 and used it for 6 weeks in Wyoming and Tahoe. Overall I am pretty happy with the jacket. I'm 6'4" and 230lbs and like the way it fits. I also like the lightweight, yet very durable and waterproof material. I used Marmot and Northface jackets in the past. The arms have ample room, can move freely and not feel restricted. I liked the see through arm pocket for ski pass and the large pit zips for ventilation. Other positives are mentioned in the above reviews, but after using the jacket in a variety of conditions, from -15 with 50 mile an hour winds to mid 30's and sunny there are a couple aspects that annoyed me and can be easily fixed. 1) The hood is too small for my Giro 9, size Xlarge ski helmet. Very tight and also felt too short. Uncomfortable when the hood was really needed. Also found that storing the hood had to be done carefully or the collar was uncomfortable. 2) The chin guard needs to be improved and the collar opening made a little wider. When the jacket is fully zipped the top, the top of the chin guard cut into the underneath of my chin. It is stiff and feels like a dull knife. Gave me a sore under my chin after only 2 days. Defeated the innovation of the sidewinder zip in my opinion, and it hurts to zip the jacket all the way up. A higher and more open collar would have solved the issue for me. 3) I would prefer gripper elastic powder skirts. When not wearing bibs and taking a hard fall, the skirt simply slid up over my ski pants, letting powder in. After wearing the jacket extensively, I'd say I am pleased, but it seems they focused so much on saving ounces that some things were not given their proper due. More material in the collar and hood, and a more functional powder skirt. I bought is because it is the lightest, yet toughest waterproof ski jacket I could find. Attribute that to the material used. Not sure if I would buy it again if purchasing a new ski jacket
