Bombproof Winter Shell
This jacket is one of Arc'teryx's top of the line winter shell jackets primarily aimed at Big Mountain inbound and out of bounds use. I am 5'10" 168 lbs and wear the medium - it provides room for layering, with great articulation the supports great range of motion. Powder shirt and length just below the hip provides great air and moisture protection on those the blower powder days. My jacket has performed great and kept me dry in all kinds of weather wet, snow and cold. Pockets are ample, but not overdone. Pit zips provide the needed venting on the chair or tram on the way up the mountain.
Some may not like the offset collar, but the laminated chin area on the interior works great. The price is high, but Arc'teryx products deliver long lasting value. They literally last forever.

great color great jacke
This is by far the most expensive shell I own, but it's also the Best. It is bombproof, stylish, and functional. I've skied in freezing rain in this bad boy, and was having a blast.
The Sidewinder is lighter and easier to pack. It doesn't have as many pockets, but to be honest the Free Thinker has too many pockets.

Arcteryx Sidewinder SV
bought this jacket off season. Have not tried it on the slope yet. Fits OK so far. Looking forward to next winter...
Sleeve fit a bit long for me, but since my waistline is not exactly slim, the large size would be too tight for me at my waist!

For those times when you need absolute protection
Love this jacket. Worked in torrential downpours in a 40 degree rainy day on the slopes of slush. On a day where my glove thumb leaked a little (now resealed) and my pants got completely soaked on the exterior making it weigh double the weight compared to dry. This jacket is the only piece of gear that kept me completely dry and warm all day. Water just wouldn't stick to it - and beaded right off. My version is the bluebird color scheme made 2 years ago and the new jackets are basically the same. Made with care in Canada to very high standards. so far used heavily for a couple of seasons and you can't really tell from new.
My only wish is slightly larger pockets. This is the shell I go to on days I expect the worst conditions.

amazing, but...
too much jacket for my husband. didn't need the uber-high level of waterproofing and durability, since he'll be downhill skiing, not ice climbing or trekking in Antarctica... looking for another, more 'JV" level jacket

I have an Arc'teryx Beta jacket and was looking at a more substantial all mountin jacket. Althought this jacket has Arc'teryx impecible quality of construction and materials. I returned it because it doesn't go down long enough. Cold air would come in underneath at that length. And then purchased, and am happy with, a longer cut Oakley Alps jacket.

Love this jacket
The cost is a bit high but the jacket is really nice. I hope it lasts for a long time to get the ROI. It fits great. The arm pit vents are a bit small but not a deal breaker.

Great jacket!
Great jacket, lightweight, great for every day use and hiking. Perfect fit. Although pockets are too low when wearing a hipbelt. Hood fits perfectly with Edelrid helmet.

Great Jacket
Love the zipper configuration and overall quality. The hood adjustability is good enought to fit my helmet or use it without. All round great shell.

Best skiing jacket on the market!
I just got back from skiing in three feet of powder snow and this jacket was great. I stayed warm and dry with only a light fleece underneath. I am 6'1" and the XL fits great. The jacket is definitely a bit noisy especially if you buy the sidewinder pants.

great jacket
This was my go to jacket in everything but the coldest conditions. I loved it. The jacket is super tough. It has a nice streamlined look and pockets in the right places. My only beef with the jacket is that the hood is a pinch small when wearing a helmet. When conditions got brutal I would try to pull the hood up over my Giro helmet and it wouldn't fit. I works fine with my Bern helmet though.

Simply the best!
Wore it daily over a light fleece on a 3-day mountain hiking trip in constant rain and cold weather last summer. My 3 fellow hikers all wore Gore-tex shells, but I was the only one who stayed comfortably dry and warm. Think I also created 3 new Arc'teryx customers!

Awesome Jacket
Overall great jacket. Performed well on numerous ski trips and look forward to next winter. The only downfall is the curved zipper flaps around if it is not fully zipped while skiing. I highly recommend

Phenomenal piece.
Awesome jacket and really lightweight. One thing i noted is there's glue mark left on the collar from the hood lamination. No big deal. Will be taking it to Lk. Louise this weekend. Zipper is tight and i love that sidewinder features. Hood is really easy to work with.

Thanks Altrec
Thanks Altrec for the killer price of $224.97 for this top of the line Arc'teryx jacket. This is a descent jacket, which means that it is designed for downhill action and as such has a generous fit and a hood that allows a wide field of view and turns with the head so as not to block vision. Because the priority is to keep the visual field open, the hood does not provide maximum face protection from the cold; for that there is the Alpha SV. The Sidewinder hood does fit fairly close to the side of the face when firmly secured with the speed drawstring at the back of the hood, and incidentally there is a convenient loop for stowing the string, but for better face protection you will have to supplement the hood with an Andean style hat or a balaclava; no big deal. The hood fits in a variety of shapes if you play with it; thus you can set it up to a preferred 'look' and for a variety of conditions. The material of the jacket is stiff and makes quite a bit of noise in the hood, but I can live with it and expect it to decrease with use. Personally, I prefer the feel of a jacket with substantiality or heft as opposed to the less durable 2 1/2 layer paclite LT jobbies that fair float away. For those who can't live with the stiffer fabric of the Sidewinder, there is the Arc'teryx Javelin gore-tex soft-tech, but I prefer the Sidewinder sidezipper style (quite apart from its function). The pleated pockets of the Sidewinder are functional in providing room without compression for hand-warming; in addition the height of the pockets means that the arms rest at an unusually comfortable angle. I like the length of the jacket, not short. The zippers close like a Mercedes' door. It is comfortable around the face, neck and wrists. Check out the cut of the cuffs! The snow skirt is unobtrusive, though perhaps metal snaps could be replaced with another closure method in future models. I have not had the Sidewinder long enough to say how it will function under climatic and environmental stress but I have no doubt that there is nothing better on the market that I have seen.

Thumbs Up!!!
Arc'Teryx does not disappoint. This is simply the best shell out there for all of your snow activities. Lightweight, Gore-Tex everywhere!! This is one highly functional piece of technical wear in the marketplace. Just one criticism, the interior zip pockets could be a tad bigger.

The Ultimate Jacket
Arc'teryx has proven once again why it's a leader in light weight multipurpose jackets. From the multiple, waterproof pockets to the wind and waterproof XCR coating it stops the elements from coming in and protects you. The Northeast states have been ravaged hard this past couple weeks and I've used it every day with proper layering I was kept warm and dry. Without a doubt, I would recommend this to anyone who has to deal with harsh winter weather while snowboarding or winter hiking.

great quality, design. questionable collar design
Lightweight (yet still bombproof) and great construction quality. However, I've had a few minor issues with it so far (after about a month of ownership, with about a week in the snow). The collar is nice and high, but it's fairly close fitting (not tight at all, but more of a "just right" cut). So, when I wear a fleece neck gaiter partially tucked in (along with the collar of a fleece mid-layer zipped up), the jacket won't zip up all the way due to the extra bulk. Not such a great thing when it's well below freezing, as it leaves the upper cheeks and nose exposed. Will be trying a less bulky gaiter/balaclava to see if that remedies it. Also, with the hood/collar up, occasionally the edge of the collar would cut/chafe into the bottom of my earlobes when I turned my head. Both of these may just be due to the way the jacket fits me specifically (though I wouldn't say my neck is fat), and they'd both be remedied fairly simply though with a helmet/tighter neck gaiter/headsock/etc. Otherwise, the rest of the jacket is great - one handed drawcords on the hood and hem, interior pockets fit a phone/ipod great, laminated cuffs feel nice and light.

Nice, well thought-out light weight Jacket!
After finally biting the bullet and spending the money on this jacket, I'm happy to say that i've been very happy with it and feel it is worth the money. No leaks, light weight, plenty of pockets, nice one-handed adjustments on the powder skirt and hood. Pit zips are very large and provide ample venting. I'm not too sure about the "Sidewinder" zipper, it is kind of uncomfortable, i think, and it's much harder to zip up all the way than a zipper than just zips up the middle. Kind of a gimmick, it seems, but a good idea nevertheless. Over all, a very good jacket in my opinion.

High cost for high quality
I purchased this garment to use both functionally and fashionably. I have not had a chance to push it to it's weather blocking limits, but I have worn it to work on rainy days and it did it's job well keeping the weather off and curiosity on. People who know the name also know the quality and the cost. This jacket is very light weight but can be used for a good layering effect.

Bomber!
I bought this jacket last fall from Altrec and it's one of the best purchases I've made. Arc'Teryx seems to have thought about everything. The seams are incredibly tight/waterproof, it breathes well on backcountry trips, works well in extreme cold (Canadian Rockies) and cool Northwest Weather (Seattle). The picture doesn't show it, but it comes with a non-detachable hood...which is great for inhospitable weather conditions. The material feel is very strong, breathable, & light weight. I really can't think of anything negative to say about it.

ultimate ski shell!
warmer than my down northface parka! Skied at Alta in it and was warm all week. I wore the same underlayers as with the northface and was as warm and more comfortable when the action heated up. Two exterior pockets are huge and bellowed. two interior pockets zip tight as well. opti radio pocket is great. It fit my cobra radio like a glove. Skied in 20 degree snow storm this weekend totally dry and comfortable. Way too expensive though. Wife got it for me for anniversary. Nice! Hood fits over my helmet and goes up and adjusts w/one hand.
