Anatomy of a Modern Snowshoe
Modern snowshoes have evolved beyond the traditional wood-framed design. They are made of a variety of high-tech materials resulting in lighter, smaller, and more maneuverable snowshoes. Today, snowshoe users have a wide range of products to pick from. While materials may differ, there are some important features to look for in any snowshoe you choose

What to Look For
Your snowshoe should have a strong, lightweight frame for performance and durability. The strength and light weight of aluminum make it an ideal frame material. The frame suspends the decking material of the shoe and acts as the seat for both the binding and the cleat.

  1. The decking is the material that comprises the surface area of the shoe. This is the part of the snowshoe that keeps you from sinking in the snow. It can either be solid or webbed. Look for lightweight and durable material.
  2. The teeth or cleats on the bottom of the snowshoe provide traction and allow for more confident footing. Ideally, your snowshoes should have integrated toe and heel cleats for added traction, as a standard feature.
  3. The harness attaches your foot to the snowshoe itself. Atlas snowshoes have some of the most comfortable harness systems in the industry.
  4. The binding system attaches the harness/cleat to the snowshoe and allows the cleat to articulate. Bindings should provide both stability and suspension.
