Arc'teryx Khamsin 38:
While it offers over 500 cu. in. more space than last year's Khamsin 30, the Khamsin 38 actually weighs a mere ounce more than the Khamsin 30 of old, which explains why Arc'teryx updated their entire line of Khamsin packs, making them larger and lighter by adding lightweight Y-Frame components, consisting of a single aluminum stay, a polyethylene frame sheet and composite stabilizer wands. In fact, the Khamsin 38 has just enough space for quick weekend overnighters a half dozen miles up from the trailhead. Like the bigger packs in this successful line, the 38 has a pivoting 3-D contoured interchangeable hipbelt for optimal sizing. This an important feature to consider when you're trying to decide between the 30 and 38--the 30 uses 2-inch webbing hipbelt, which should work fine unless you're spending more than five or six hours a day with the pack on your back or you plan on hauling heavy loads (a tent, a stove, winter outerwear and stuff). The Khamsin 38 also has a ski attachment loop. You'll find that this pack is the right size for day hikes or balmy summer overnighters.
