Description

Perfect for a summer of hard core biking and skating, the Bern Brentwood Summer Helmet with Zipmold Foam will work on snow too – you just have to buy the add-on on winter liner, or go the cheaper route and wear it over a beanie.

This Bern helmet meets safety standards for bike and skate with it's thin yet tough PVC shell and its Zipmold interior for high-impact protection. Because it's made with lightweight injected Zipmold foam for its protective interior layer it has a high strength ratio that allows Bern to design it with a lower profile which means you don't have to put up with that hot mushroom head look when you're cruising through your urban playground. It has a seamless finish for true skater style and a removable visor with customizable interior padding that keeps the sweat under control. On those super sunny days when the sidewalks are glaring white, your sunglasses will ride comfortably in the sunglass channels while the airflow vents keep your head feeling nice and cool.

Whether you use it for protection during your bike commute to work on your single-speed or you're showing the old dogs some new tricks on your board in the park, the Bern Brentwood Helmet will earn an easy 5-stars from the style judges and keep your head from getting crushed like a melon as you zig and zag through traffic.

super fast shipping, came in mint condition. the extra lining w.out the visor is also handy when a visor is not needed. Vents make for a pretty cool head, while still maintaining style. white also makes for a great safety tool, when night riding and maintaining visibility. all in all, perfect.

lightweight, fits large head
January 12, 2012

I purchased this helment as a gift for my son. He has had trouble finding a helmet large enough to fit. The XXL fits him perfectly, and it does not look "gianormous." He finds it comfortable and it is adjustable so he can wear a lightweight hat underneath in cold weather. He likes the style and the color - black with green stripe - very much. He uses it daily to commute to work. Excellent purchase!

Great low profile protection
July 26, 2011

I wanted a biking helmet that offers real protection (fits around the head, not just at the top); I first got a Fox Transition but that thing was gigantic so I returned it immediately. The Brentwood cost quite a bit more but was exactly what I was looking for: good protection, decent design, good build quality, and most importantly, a very low-profile form factor. I wished it was a bit cheaper or had more colors/designs to choose from but overall it's a great buy.

I ordered the Matte black Bern Brentwood helmet. Loved the way it looked and felt. I'm usually a medium so I ordered a medium. A bit tight at first, but felt like it "molded" to my head. I was cut off by a long boarder after he poked out from behind a car...I heard. I don't remember the crash at all. Woke up in a hospital bed with a concussion. I blacked out for 2 hours. My roommate witnessed the entire thing. EMS and police were taking pictures of my helmet to show others. Helped cracked all the way through in two places on the back. Head & rest of my body unscathed. If I weren't wearing the helmet, that would have been my skull cracked in two places. Ordering another one today! Think I'm gonna try out the Watts just to switch it up. Otherwise, Brentwood is great. Definitely recommend!

Seems small
March 29, 2011

Despite measuring my size the corresponding size helmet was much too small. Either these run very small or perhaps my head is just shaped oddly. A downside to the exact fit of the Berns I suppose. So something to keep in mind.

A MUST BUY! A++ Style/Fit/Quality
October 21, 2011

I had to give this helmet 5 stars because of its fit, beautiful matte finish (in matte black) and style. I only had one sizing issue with this helmet. If you want a good snug fit, I would recommend the size that logically should fit you tighter, still falling within your measurements , of course. I was on the bottom end of the Large - Upper end of the Medium in inches. I went by inches, 22.5, and ordered the large; I didn't realize, in fact , that the Medium was actually listed as a size 7 , and the large as a size 7 1/4, and I am a size 7. When I returned it for the medium, I couldn't have been more pleased with the small lightweight size of the helmet, as well as the snug, yet not too tight fit. Great looks and extremely comfortable to wear, even riding trails in the woods in South Alabama in the summer 100 degree humid heat as I did. Love it!

City Helmet
June 29, 2011

I bought this helmet after cracking my Bell Solar helmet in a crash. I wanted a lid that was a bit more low profile and not so much like a space craft. The Brentwood fit that bill perfectly, I wear it when ever I go out (the point of a helmet) and find it very comfortable. The bill on the front is nice in sun and rain and is a great feature. The one issue I have with this helmet, and it is minor, is that there is a lack of vents on the thing. Compared to say a road helmet it's down right stuffy. I still stand by this helmet and l love it! Good job Bern!

Pros: Build quality, Ease of use, Cons: a bit warm

Great all-around helmet
September 04, 2011

Bought this helmet because I do not like the looks of "traditional" biking helmets. I bought the XL size because I have a fairly large head. It fit perfectly, just be sure to measure your head circumference before you select size. Have used it for over 100 miles so far and have no complaints. The visor keeps the sun out of my eyes and directs sweat away from my face/eye area. No rubbing due to the chin strap, and the zip mold fitting system dialed in the fit perfectly. A great buy!!!

Good all-around helmet
July 14, 2011

I was looking for one multi-purpose helmet for various activities such as skateboarding, mountain biking and perhaps snowboarding in the winter. I think I have found what I was looking for. This helmet is well-built, light-weight and also looks nice. Visor is a nice touch. Most of all, it comes in bigger sizes. The XL fits my 60cm head reasonably well without making it look disproportionately big. I believe most of the other helmets in the similar price range max out at 59cm. Happy with the purchase so far.

Great Helmet!!!
April 28, 2011

This helmet is awesome. I first learned about Bern from a friend of mine who works as a messenger in NYC and is sponsored by Bern. The Brentwood was my first helmet. The helmet is nice and light and the straps are easily adjustable. The XXXL size fits my large (size 7-7/8) head perfectly. Other brands size XL are often too small for me and impossible with a wool hat underneath. I hope Bern continues to offer a wide range of sizes, it's great! I really like the switchable liners and the fact that they attach with snaps instead of velcro means they stay put. Also, the liners are much better quality (you could toss them in the laundry) than other helmet liners. For urban riding and general errands it's the best helmet I have used.

a less dorky alternative
May 28, 2011

I'm pretty happy with the fit of this helmet. While I have a big head, I was a bit surprised to find I needed a XXL... that being said I would assume these fit a bit tighter / smaller than an average helmet which is probably the reason they offer a XXXL & XXL in the first place! I love the look of this helmet and also like the option to swap out the insides for colder weather. The one issue I have is with the ventilation. I just don't think there is enough for really hot days, and it seems to funnel a bit of air directly into my ears with an audible "woosh" which can get a little annoying after a while. Nothing big, but you definitely hear it.

Nice looking but poor fit
September 29, 2011

Great looking helmet but the thing just doesn't fit my head. Went for the xl base on the sizing chart but the fit was way too tight. The really strange thing is we ordered the woman's version for my wife in a large, again based on the woman's sizing chart, and her helmet fits me perfect. Again, really good looking helmet but I would suggest trying one on in a store to verify fit before purchasing

Pros: looks, Cons: poor fit

Bern Brentwood Helmet
September 10, 2011

I purchased a Bern Brentwood helmet because I wanted protection for my head and not just an aerodynamic streamlined plastic appliance that sits on top of my head and looks slick but is probably less likely to provide adequate protection in a collision. I am very pleased with the helmet and have used it on several rides. The Bern Brentwood helmet fits very well with no need to insert additional padding; the construction of the shell with the Zipmold foam is precision made with very high quality materials, and it has been very comfortable on long hot rides. I also like the visor for reducing glare from the sun which can easily be removed on cloudy days. An additional unexpected benefit is my behind the ear hearing aids are well protected along with the ears because the helmet droops down behind the ears to provide protection for the back of the head. A sweatband is incorporated in the helmet that very effectively pads the inside the helmet and works well at keeping sweat from running down your forehead into the eyes

great-looking, practical & excellent protection..
October 08, 2011

I started commuting to work on my bike in May 2011. I had been using the matte black Bern Brentwood helmet since then until I crashed and broke a bone in my wrist. The helmet took a hard hit instead of my face/forehead. It did it's job well and I am grateful for it's extra coverage all-around. Anyone considering this is probably wondering how the ventilation compares to one of the "Flight-of-the-Navigator" style road helmets that put a premium on aerodynamics, airflow and garish neon colors; I can't really answer to that due to never using one, but I can say that airflow is reduced in the Brentwood, as you might expect, BUT it is not a deal breaker and I have no complaints. Maybe I just got used to it, but even in direct sunlight on a hot an humid day, it's still cooler with this black helmet on than off. The ball cap visor looks much better than the batwing style and extends just the right amount. Easy to snap-in/out for washing. As a side note I measured my head circumference many times and finally decided I could confidently order the XL. I measured right in the middle of that range. Unfortunately, I found out my head is more oblong front-to-back (or their mold is more round than my head) and the XL was too small. So small the fit, I actually jumped up to the XXL on a whim and have never looked back. Although it could fit a little more snugly on the sides, it is not bothersome or unsafe, it 'seats' well does not get uncomfortable even after a couple hours. I'm very happy with it and I plan to buy a similar one for my wife soon. Also, when I exchanged for the larger size, Altrec's return process was fast and easy. They are a great company to do biz with, esp since I couldn't find anything like this at my neighborhood LBS. tl;dr: great-looking, sturdy helmet. little down on airflow, but exceeded my expectations for comfort and saved my noggin.

August 02, 2011

I have not worn a helmet in years due to the "goofy look." My kids got on my case since we insist that they wear one. I went shopping for a helmet I would actually wear. This one is it. Comfortable and not too bad to look at either. This one is ventilated, but not as much as most "spaceship" bike helmets. All the areas that get sweaty can be washed. Great multi-use helmet
May 23, 2011

I bought this helmet to use for biking around the streets of Chicago and couldn't be happier so far. It's comfortable to wear and doesn't look like you're wearing a bowling ball on top of your head like some helmets. I haven't had it during the winter season yet, but the summer lining pops out easily and can be replaced with a warm winter lining, which will be perfect for ski season. Note that the helmets run a little small. I have a pretty big head (but by no means giant) and needed an XXL. For comparison, I wear a size 7 3/8 or 7 1/2 baseball hat. I strongly recommend this helmet or any other Bern helmet if you are looking for a stylish, lightweight alternative to the typical bike helmet.

Runs a little smaller than they used to
January 17, 2012

These are excellent helmets. I have a large head and was excited to see a XXXL. I currently have a XXL and had to remove a few sections of the padding inside to get a comfortable fit. Unfortunately, the new helmet didn't seem any larger than my current one. They've also changed the liner system since I bought mine (back of head pad is now part of the liner; not independent) so that if I took out the new liner there would be no back pad. To make a long story short, I'd say they run a little small, but they are great helmets.

Great helmet
June 21, 2012

Looked around for a number of helmets after finally buying a bike here in New York City. After much deliberation, I decided to buy the Brentwood. It's a great helmet but I think you might want to try on a few sizes if you're a bit unsure. My wife tried on a few but even with the same size, the fit was a bit different in each one. The only think I'd like to see is Bern including the visorless harness with the helmet.

November 16, 2010

I got this helmet for biking/commuting and I really like it. It's light, comfortable and all quality. Most of the others I tried weren't even close. What I really like is the size – other similar helmets appear much larger but offer no more protection (same certifications). Measure your head carefully to determine the size you choose. My head is 22.5 inches (57.15 cm) and the Medium is snug – borderline, but totally fine. The Large would be too loose.

COST EFFECTIVE HELMET
July 15, 2011

This is a well-made helmet. You can feel this immediately on handling it. It is light and well finished. Foam inserts are not the type that will crumble with age. The helmet come with an extra rim insert that does not have the visor. The shape of the helmet bowl is more for regular shaped heads. Rounder heads will still feel some temple squeeze and too much room front and back. Those wearing glasses/shades may also find the helmet interferes with eye wear temples. You need to fit this helmet properly as the adjustment is very limited, possibly just to accommodate wearing some kind of beanie for colder days. Bern does a good job of having lots of sizes to choose from, but retailers rarely carry all the sizes, unlike Altrec. You should also expect some slight modifications by inserting high density foam pads to help the helmet fit. What I LOVE about this helmet is that I can do away with having so many lids of the different sports I do. I teach kayaking and cycling, and also do skiing, climbing and white water rafting. Now I have one helmet that will work for all my sports. Please note that this helmet does not have an attachment point for lights or hangers/keepers for goggles (ala skiing).

Good helmet

I purchased this helmet for daily use. First thing I want to say is this helmet looks great compared to other helmet. Also, removable sun visor is great idea. All the features in this helmet are easy to remove. Overall, nice looking helmet with removable sun visor. However, size of the helmet seems to slightly small. you have to make sure what size you are wearing before place an order.

Pros: Great design, Ease of use, Cons: fit

I have been looking for an XXXL helmet for inline skating and thought I had finally found it. Liner was good and true to size, but the helmet was not as large as the liner! I returned it and do not trust the sizing listed for this or the other Bern helmets. Oh well, other than not fitting, it was a nice helmet...

Awesome helmet! It has a nice low profile with a very comfortable fit. Bern seems to have figured out how to make the best bike helmet. Might be a tad warm with the band, but I like having it so the helmet is nice and secure and can't slide around in the event of a crash. Plenty of vents should help stay cool in the sun.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance
