Great Hard Hat
June 02, 2011

The design, shape, color, packaging, and overall quality of the helmet (hard hat) were amazing! The only thing - and I do mean "only" - that I wasn't 100% satisfied with was the size. It's difficult buying online because you can't try things on. I ordered a medium, thinking that it might even be a little too snug, but when it came, there was plenty of room! I'm returning it and getting a small. It's a super cool looking helmet! Real old school.

Awesome Helmet!
July 08, 2011

I would recommend this helmet to anyone who wants to get away from wearing the standard looking bike helmet. It is lightweight and is the most comfortable mountain bike helmet I have used thus far. An added bonus that I didn't read in the other reviews before purchasing was the fact that it comes with the Brock padding which helps with cooling and also keeps you drier than other helmet padding. Another benefit of the style is that it can be used for other outdoor sports. I plan on also using mine while kayaking and rock climbing.

Pros: Great design, Great value

Wish it didn't get scuffed up as easily as it does. Bump it into a painted wall and you have a massive white spot. Other than that, it's a cool looking helmet at the right price.

Bern Watts Review
May 08, 2011

Upon pulling it out of the box, it did have a few minor scuffs, which I assume were gathered during the manufacturing and packaging process, or perhaps even during shipping. That minor flaw really idd little to deter me, however, because it's a helmet and they're meant to take all the beating so that your head may live on looking right as rain. A reason I'd say it was a manufacturing flaw is because the durability of the paint since I have begun using it has proven solid--placing it on concrete or dropping it here and there will do little to the cosmetics. But, let's move on because that's a petty aspect. The helmet fits snug and doesn't wobble whatsoever. The foam core and padding are all incredibly comfortable and seem to me, after a few weeks of usage, durable as you'd expect from prolonged and consistent usage. There has been lots of friction, lots of moisture, and none of the padding has begun flaking or wearing. It is incredibly light, which further adds to the overall comfort of the design, however, part of that lightweight comes as a result of the foam utilized being of a lighter, less dense, thus impact-explosive composition that that does not meet safety regulation standards. This was initially a problem and concern for me, because, as a result of this, it is technically not a helmet, but a hard hat. Keeping that in mind, if you feel unsafe about that aspect, there is an EPS foam version available. Although, considering what "hard hats"are defined as, I'd say it's up to you. With the snug fit comes quite a bit of heat. While there are a few ventilation holes on the crown, it does very little in terms of keeping you cool and dry, but that's what you should expect from a helmet of this nutshell design. All in all, I'd say go for it, but only if you feel comfortable about its durability and feel that it will hold up to your riding routine's innate risks.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Great value, fit, Cons: heat

Great for my beach ball head
May 12, 2010

I have a gigantic head. It's not just large (7 3/4), but it's also oblong from front to back. There are many helmets that claim to support my circumference, but the rigidity of the plastic on various helmets limit their compatibility with my ridiculously shaped skull. I've actually had to cut padding out of different helmets over the years to make them fit, which more or less defeats the purpose of the helmet in the first place. No more! This Bern helmet is the bomb. It fits, and it doesn't make me look like a ding dong. I got the XXL (some other models go as far as XXXL). On top of that, it's comfortable, cool, and seems to have more robust padding than anything I've owned in the past. Just like the sneaker manufacturers that go as high as 13 across the full breadth of their styles, I will stand by Bern for being sufficiently smart and 'enterprising' to earn my business. If this is ever lost or damaged (heaven forbid), I'll be back online to buy another Bern.

very nice basic design, simple no fancy swirl colors like most helmets, well fitted, measurement size are accurate.

Great design
August 12, 2010

Careful. I, like most people probably didn't realize that this helmet is not EPS safety rated. Even though it's called the "summer helmet" there were all kinds of warnings in the box that said "this is not a helmet, it is a 'hard hat'". So... why not call it the summer hard hat? Anyway, I returned it but love the design so much I'll probably spend the extra money and spring for the EPS Watts helmet.

Runs a little large
July 06, 2010

My head size is on the cusp of Medium/Large. Works for me because I still use this as a winter helmet for riding with a beanie underneath... All and all, this is a good helmet!

A nice looking helmet
May 23, 2010

I bought the Watts knowing about the foam versus Styrofoam issue of protection. The risk is there and I'll take whatever protection this gives for now. What I wanted though is a lid that looks good and is comfortable. The fit is very good, especially with large, round heads like mine. I fit the XL and I'm a 7 3/4 head. The fit is snug and low, and the visor works too. I'm happy with the Watts and I'll probably upgrade to the full EPS protection one.

I really enjoyed using this helmet when i went snowboarding. It works well and does everything it's supposed too do. I have used it several times and have enjoyed its protection.

Great looking and comfy!
April 23, 2010

I love how this looks and feels on my head and I especially love it in the gloss white finish that I chose. I don't mind wearing protective headgear if it looks this good. :) My only problem with this is the product description doesn't say that it's a "hard hat" and not a "helmet". According to numerous "Attention" tags on the product and to the Bern website, this product is merely a hard hat. It does not have sufficient qualities to be properly qualified as a helmet and only protects against very minimal impact. The EPS version of this same model is the real "helmet". Now I only wish they sold the Bern Watts Summer EPS Helmet in gloss white too.

Looks great
August 02, 2010

I have a large head - 61cm. The fit on the XXL is a bit tight front and back and loose on the L+R sides for me. I'm hoping that will adjust as I wear it more

Solid Quality Hard Hat
August 21, 2011

The Bern Watts (non-EPS) Summer Helmet is stylish, comfortable, and looks terrific in an urban setting. As an office worker, I cycle to work everyday and this helmet goes great with professional attire...even a suit! I wear a 7 hat size and the medium Watts fits snugly but not tightly, which means minimal shaking. In spite of its namesake, the Watts (non-EPS) Helmet is not really a "helmet" but rather a hard hat, so I probably would not wear it for mountain biking or other high-impact activities. For more added protection in the same shell, buy the EPS version of the Watts. If you live in an area that is very hot and humid, the Watts might be a bit too warm to wear during the summer since it has fewer air vents than other bicycle helmets. However, it's perfect for the spring, fall and winter. All in all, this helmet is definitely worth buying for the aforementioned reasons.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Cons: not for high-impact wear

Helm, good fit, good comfort and excellent coverage. I like the helmet but I don't like that I have to write more to get the %15 off my next purchase but I will keep writing because every little bit helps. The helmet does not meet current crash test standards but I avoided wearing a helmet until now because they all had a poor feel.

The only bike helmet I will wear
September 11, 2011

Note that this version of the Bern Watts is listed as a "hard-hat". If you want a CPSC certified helmet I believe you want the Watts EPS version. However, I don't think they make the EPS version in the XXL size, which is the one I needed. I bought this to use as a bike helmet for daily commuting. I think all bike helmets look goofy, and the BERN helmets are the only ones I am willing to wear. I am very satisfied with it. The quality is very good. I have only 2 minor complaints. The helmet is a little hot to wear if you are not moving in direct sun. However, once you start moving there is great airflow through the helmet and you cool down quickly. The second issue is that I feel it is a little heavy, although I am getting used to it.

Pros: Great design, Build quality

Great Helmet
January 28, 2011

The Bern Watts Summer Helmet is a very durable helmet for the money. You can feel the quality before you ever put the helmet on. Also, I really like the style which is matched by its comfort. There is also a great selection of colors to choose from. The only issue I have is weight of the helmet. It is much heavier than other helmets I have tried. However, I would definitely recommend due to the quality of the product. Quality equals safety.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, Cons: weight

XXL Helmets
August 24, 2011

Thank God I found a helmet that fits our family of "melon heads"! My three kids have inherited my size 8 melon. It was impossible to find any cool looking helmet they would wear that fit their heads. The Watts Summer Helmet is the first helmet I have found that fits my cranium like it should. My kids refuse to wear any helmets I have purchased in the past because they were way too small. This helmet not only fits great...but it doesn't make you look like "Gazoo"from the Flintstones. It comes in a variety of decent colours and I really like the built in sun visor. Although I bought this helmet primarily for cycling, I plan to use it for snowboarding as well. Quality and design superior to any others I have tried. We are all very satisfied with this helmet.

Unfortunately I ordered the wrong size. Altrec was very helpful in getting this returned, but the helmet was good other than the size. The product was just as described. The material and external shell made it a low profile helmet.

I am enjoying my new Bern helmet. The visor helps when it's sunny and because the helmet is white, I am more visable at night. Being lightweight, it is comfortable and the vents help so you don't get too hot.
