Winner of the Alpinist Mountain Standards award, the compact Black Diamond Apollo Lantern packs down to only 5 x 3 in. and then extends to a nine-inch height when you need some light. Added folding aluminum legs make the Apollo stable when it's on a table, and a top loop lets you hang it inside the tent for those storm-bound mental sessions. The three LED bulbs light up a 30-foot radius for outside use, and the Apollo dims to save energy when you don't need the power. You can use Black Diamond's NRG rechargeable battery system or four AA batteries. A 3-Watt LED works in tandem with dual reflectors and a frosted globe to provide maximum light output without causing glare. A unique dimming switch provides quick and easy brightness adjustability.

When I arrived at a campsite in total darkness this lantern made setting up a tent a lot easier. It was lightweight and easy to hold with one hand while setting up the tent. I dropped it couple times from about 3 feet high and didn't even get a scratch on it. This thing puts out quite a bit of light for being so small. I used the lantern for about 4 hours during my trip and judging by the battery meter I probably could have used it for another 4 plus. The tripod legs that fold down make it very stable. Overall a great product!

Big Band for the Buck

Love this little thing. I mostly bought this for hiking since most of my hikes involve some sort of pre-dawn travel. It's super light weight, very bright and I like the versatility of being able to hang it or have it free standing. The only complaint I have is that I wish I could have purchased the NRG battery with the lantern as a packaged deal. Though regular rechargeable AA work well enough.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, light weight

Super Bright Light

This works very well with a dimmer switch in the on/off button. It lights up your tent on full power to find gear and dims as the mood changes.... A little heavy but worth it if you are not trekking the Silk Road...

Not only outdoor activity but also in an emergency
May 04, 2011

I have the first model of Apollo and still works great, but this time I just bought new Apollo which is upgraded from 60 to 80 lumens of bright. Plus, new model has separate double hooks(old model has just a single hook hang loop). If you have Orbit, yeah it looks the same style of hook. You don't need mini accessory carabiners for hanging it from a string. When we had an electric power outage, my family was surprised at Apollo's work. This is the best not only for your outdoor activities but also in a time of emergency. Please don't forget to add NRG Rechargeable Battery Kit, this save $ for your 4 AA alkalines.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

This is a fabulous lantern. I love the compact nature with the perfect output of light. I especially love the fact that you can hang the lantern from the ceiling of your tent. It provided the perfect amount of light for reading. I have started to take this everywhere with me.

Does what I wanted it to do
October 19, 2010

I have 6 of these, and thus far am satisfied with them. They're used for camping, hunting and bug-out/preparedness bags. They seem to be well built, nothing has broken or malfunctioned thus far. The legs mount to the lantern body solidly, don't wobble when folded down, then fold up easily and stay there. The lantern lens (or top) extend-and-retract functions ok too. The AA battery power was a requirement. To the extent possible/practical, all my battery-powered gear runs on AA. It puts out a good amount of light, but seems it could do better given that it uses 4 AA batteries. Seems one of my Fenix flashlights - a single-AA powered LD10 - with a diffuser on it is just about as bright. But - some of that probably has to do with current advances in LEDs and the associated control circuitry implmented in the LD10. My biggest concern is the battery carriage. Just to be clear - none of them have given me any problems. But they just don't feel as solid as the rest of the lantern. Given that one can expect batteries to be changed fairly often during extended use, the carriage could be one of the first things on the lamp that starts to cause problems. In summary, I found a lot to like about these lanterns, but will keep a close eye on the battery carriages.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, compact size

One of our best camping purchases
July 09, 2010

This light is small yet very powerful. We agreed that it was one of the best purchases we made for our Yosemite camping trip.
