Jake Burton Carpenter is truly one of the pioneers of the sport, having developed boards that combined surf, skate, and ski, in the early 1970's. Based out of Vermont, one of the first states to adopt snowboarding and allow for terrain parks and the first ever snowboard competitions, Burton Snowboards built the world's first snowboard factory, and began making boards for a sport that hadn't yet begun to hit the mainstream. Burton Snowboards is dedicated to giving back to the sport. In 1998, the company created a Learn to Ride program which focuses on providing beginner-level equipment in order to give new riders the ultimate first experience.
