Description

Simple, versatile and designed to feel as supple and comfy as a heavy sweatshirt, the Columbia Men's Ascender II Softshell Jacket is the perfect outer layer for a fall hike or a snowshoe outing on a sunny day. Made from rich, smooth-surfaced softshell fleece, this winter coat is windproof and water-resistant thanks to Omni-Shield polyester fabric. It will work hard to block out the weather and is more breathable than a hard shell to keep you dry and comfy when interior temperatures rise. Adjustable cuffs and a drawcord at the hem help seal out chilly fall breezes and 3 zippered pockets offer a warm place for hands and secure storage for chapstick, car keys and snacks. With a soft, tricot lining, this Columbia jacket is cozy, moisture-wicking ski wear for sunny days on the mountain or for an aerobic Nordic ski on a quiet, wooded trail. Offered in a variety of stylish colors this season, you'll be looking good for that apr├Ęs-adventure meal in town when you're wearing the Columbia Ascender II Softshell Jacket for men.

Excellent customer care!!
February 27, 2012

I somehow received the wrong color jacket and Altrec stepped up with prompt courteous support and fully refunded and paid for my return shipping. It could easily have happened to anyone since Green was in the name of the two colors in question. I will be reordering the correct jacket as soon as my refund hits. Thanks again Altrec!!

It's good for me
October 15, 2012

It's good for me, the color and the style. The quality it's good, but some small detail can be a little better like the neck can be a little softer. I just wear it for some walk in the city, not in the hill, so I feel it's enough.

The best value for a softshell
December 27, 2012

As far as softshells go, you can't find a better value than this one. It's comparable in quality and function to more expensive brands. That not only saves you money, but will make sure you'll utilize it in all conditions rather than coddling it and avoiding use in less-than-ideal situations for fear of subjecting to to too much wear or abuse. I'd take this one over The North Face softshells any day.

Great jacket.
March 20, 2012

This jacket is just awesome. I'm 5'9 178lb and the large size fits great with room for a hoody. I tried the medium and it was way too tight in the arm pit area. This jacket looks and feels great. I wish Columbia put omni heat in this jacket..

Great Value for the money
November 15, 2012

I was looking for a reasonably priced softshell and the Ascender II has been great. I have yet to test it out in a real down pour but the current drizzle we are getting is no problem. The jacket is made well. The only thing that caught my eye was the flap up near the collar behind the zipper. It looks a little different than some other softshells out there, but it does keep the zipper off your chin and neck. All said, it is a warm, comfortable, reasonably priced shell that looks good and fits well.

I searched high and wide and did my due diligence in reviewing outerwear that would shield me from the elements and inclement weather I frequently encounter. Most specifically, I required a soft shell jacket that would protect me from harsh wind and repel water. Roughly 5'8" and anywhere between 165 to 175 lbs with a normal athletic build, I also needed a jacket that was comfortable and that I could hike in. I did not want something precise or form fitting, hence my selection of a Large size. Since acquiring the Columbia Ascender II, I've encountered weather as low as 35 degrees F and light to moderate precipitation. The Ascender II has been outstanding in its' performance against these elements. It should be noted however at work, I do wear anywhere from three to four layers underneath, of which two are normally long sleeve. I have used this jacket casually with merely two layers underneath, and it does a terrific job as well in weather as low as the mid 40's. The Large size turned out to be the perfect size, multiple layers or not for me--it's perfectly loose for my taste, but in the same token I'm not swimming in too much fabric at all. The other obvious big selling point with the Ascender II is its price. It is roughly half that of the apex jacket offered by North Face, so those looking to save a chunk of change should take a long look at the Columbia Ascender II.

Pros: Build quality, Performance, Great value, works well in the inclement weather i encounter

great jacket/value
August 31, 2011

nice jacket, comfortable and durable. haven't really tested it out in tough conditions yet so my opinion may change. great for cold morning bike rides to work. the jacket is slightly different than the one pictured on the website- the chest pocket zipper is on the side (near the front zipper) and not on top. not a big deal but different than advertised.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Great value
Comfort: 5 / 5
