Columbua Rain Jacket
December 26, 2010

This jacket is awesome. It really is water and wind proof and does a great job keeping me warm and dry when I am walking around campus on a rainy day- I would definitely recommend this jacket. It's also large enough to wear a fleece underneath for colder weather activities like skiing.

Great rain jacket-fits a little large
December 29, 2011

I bought this jacket for my brother for Christmas. I read several reviews that recommended ordering a size smaller since the jacket runs a little large. According to the sizing chart, my brother would wear a medium (5'5", 145 lbs) because he is broad chested; however, I decided on the small per the reviews. It ended up fitting him perfectly. Plus, the red color looked great. My brother works in construction, so he was happy to have a good rain jacket.

great jacket
June 21, 2011

It's really a great jacket, with very high quality. Lightweight and waterproof. The only thing is it comes to be big. I bought a medium size but the sleeve is too long to me. I have to change to a smaller one. Anyway, it is overall a good product, I will recommend it to my friends.

Worthy buy
December 29, 2011

This is my first purchase on Altrec and it has made a very good first impression. The watertight jacket truly is waterproof. I have yet to put it to the test, but by feeling the nylon material, I'm sure it'll live up to its name; the nylon weave is very tight. The only thing I hope that can be changed is the fit. I bought a small and it was still I little big and I'm roughly 130lb and 5'9". However, this allows me to wear sweater underneath. Overall, this is a great purchase.

Best packable rain jacket for the money
July 12, 2011

I had the opportunity to field test this jacket just a few days after it arrived. After 60-minutes in a downpour and other 90-minutes in a gentle mist, my cotton t-shirt remained perfectly dry. It lives up to its Watertight name. It is silky soft inside and very comfortable. The loops on the Velcro wrist closures are long enough that the hook side docks in a full open position for ventilation. The hood does not come off. Some have panned that but I list it as a must have feature. The jacket stores easily into its own pocket for packing. It's a bit bigger package than other rain shells I've had - probably due to the lining. I'm usually right between a size Large and X-Large depending on the brand. This jacket in a Large fits perfectly with room for a medium weight hooded sweatshirt underneath. I replaced a worn out Marmot jacket that was an XL (I can't wear a Marmot Large). The length is perfect for my 5’-11” height.

Great Lightweight Rain Jacket
December 21, 2011

I bought this rain jacket for walking/hiking with my dog on rainy days. Jacket arrived just in time for a nice rain storm. Gave it a good test, and it kept me bone dry while out in the rain for several hours. Also turns out to be pretty good at blocking wind. Jacket has plenty of adjustments to help keep the weather out. Did not expect much from the small soft visor on the hood, though it did surprise me with how well it actually worked. This jacket is also doubling well as simple shell layer on chilly windy mornings where the wind will cut through my thinner fleece jackets/pull over. Just do not expect the pockets to keep your hands warm. It also packs down to a very reasonable size, making it easy to stow or carry. The only complaint I have is very minimal; the XL is fairly large on my frame (6’ 220lbs). However, this does allow it to fit over many layers or a thick jacket on cold days. I’m very happy with this purchase, and plan to buy a second in a smaller size for the warmer months. Columbia very rarely disappoints.

Exactly what I wanted
February 13, 2012

My old Columbia rain jacket finally died after 15+ years of abuse. I wore it every time I needed a jacket. During the winter, I used it as a shell and layered. During the summer, I used it as a rain jacket. Spring and fall, it was my constant companion. Hiking, camping and even walking across campus, it was either on me or stuffed in my pack. This replacement jacket seems to have the same quality and I expect the same durability as my old one.

Columbia Men's Watertight Jacket
October 28, 2012

A light weight and durable shell, this jacket has been quite useful when walking my dog on light to moderately rainy days (even a retriever has her limits with wanting to walk in the rain). It is breathable yet warm and has kept me dry without making me over heat on a long walk. All points considered I would definitely reccomend this jacket to anyone looking for a well made light weight rain/wind proof jacket.

Columbia Watertight Rainjacket
October 09, 2012

It's not gore-tex, but it works and costs a heck of a lot less. Had the unfortunate pleasure of using this jacket recently in extremely wet conditions in North Carolina, and it was excellent. Stayed warm and dry, and the jacket provides fairly good freedom of movement. The hood is large, however the adjustments allows it to be somewhat adaptable to your needs. Hood does not turn with your head, so your peripheral sight will be limited. It has a slight brim that stays firm fairly well, keeping raindrops off of your face. The hood is not removable, and there are no hidey holes for it. The neck is extended to provide coverage up to just under your nose, depending on how far you have it zipped. The zippers are covered by flaps, with the flap over the main zipper which snaps into place to keep them from leaking. the sleeves are a good length with adjustable Velcro cuffs. The waist line is also a longer length, with bungee adjustments to allow it to fit. As some other reviewers have said, the jacket basically makes the water bead up and roll off; a quick hokey-pokey before going indoors will shake off most of the excess water. I do not recall seeing vent-holes, because it was in the 60s to 70s and I didn't need them. I could imagine if the temperature was in the 80s to 90s, it would indeed be hot. The entire jacket probably weighs about 2 lbs, and stuffs into an inner pocket nicely, making it about the size of a medium hard cover book. Overall, its a wonderful jacket for the price, and more than capable of keeping you comfortable in ugly conditions.

waterproof
December 19, 2011

as soon as i got my order i had put it on and went outside. it is light kind of feels good even in the cold weather you just put it on other jacket or sweaters inside and put it on this if its raining you are safe and if you dont want it wear after a while just take it off and put pull in you bag when you fold it it becomes very smal. what about waterproofness i did checked it by putting water on it and the waterdrops just rolled away. i think for the price it worthy and especially altrec.com has its 30% off on this item. it is nice

Nice waterproof Jacket
February 26, 2012

I like this jacket and purchased it to have a light weight, waterproof jacket. It certainly is that. I like Columbia brand gear and would recommend it to a friend. My only complaint, and it's a small one at that, is that it seems to run a bit big (baggy). It is not fitted and has straight sides. The "cinch cord" they give you for the waist doesn't stay tight. Time will tell if this goes from good to great, but so far I do like it.

November 04, 2010

I am 5'9'' and 130lb. The grey/blue one in small size looks great but somewhat big. Comparing the North Face Resolve Jacket which is a bit small, it's OK for winter with sweater inside.~ Actually, few rain in KY, so next time I'll see whether it's good for downpour. Considering 40% discount, definitely Good deal!

I haven't had this jacket too long, so I can't say much about the durability, however it does seem to be built well. The fit is a tad big, but that is good for fitting over a fleece jacket. The pockets, zippers, and draw cords are well placed and work just fine. In the light rain I've been out in, it has kept me dry and toasty. Thumbs up!

Fabulous Gift for the Outdoorsman!
December 26, 2010

I purchased this item as a gift for my father, whom immediately put it to use the next day. He wore this jacket on an early morning fishing outing with semi-threatening clouds, which released an occasional light drizzle. His shirt underneath stayed dry through the Florida rain, and the jacket was light enough to wear once the sun came out and the cool air disappeared. The wind, however, continued to whip slightly, but he claimed that it did not penetrate through. He loves that it is breathable, and does not have the frightening thin fabric and paper-like texture that so many waterproof lightweight jackets have nowadays. He raves about the quality, that he is unafraid that he may rip it like others he’s owned that proved to be too delicate, and I am currently considered his favorite child. The fit runs slightly large, but I don’t think it is supposed to be a body-hugging wind-blocker. My father is 5’8” and 160lbs, and the medium fits him comfortably. He especially loves that the front/side pockets are equipped with zippers, and that the hood has a cord to close it around his face, but still has a bill to shield him from the grueling morning sun. If you have never experienced Florida weather you may not know that the sun can be brightly shining with rain sprinkling you concurrently! Annoyingly beautiful to my father, an intermediate fisherman, this jacket made the perfect gift…and my father is not one to be easily pleased. A definite score of five stars for quality, comfort, performance, and durability!

Aptly Named Jacket
November 27, 2011

I bought the Columbia watertight jacket for the versatility it offered in terms of warmth and protection. I have not been disappointed. I wore it to a rainy football game and it shed water all day. I was dry and warm with my underneath layers of clothing. As noted by others it fits slightly larger than expected, but that is a blessing that allows sweaters or a sweatshirt and turtleneck to be worn under it. It is packable, although I have not done so yet. The lining breathes and no condensation occurred inside the jacket. I have had good luck with Columbia products and the price level of this coat was too enticing to pass up. I can't comment on durability as I have used it only a couple of months. If you need a lightweight coat that is waterproof, this is your choice.

Does not breathe
September 28, 2011

Well this jacket is sold as watertight, and it certainly is -- in both directions. It kept me dry from the rain, but within 5 minutes of putting it on, I begin to overheat and sweat. The sleeves are only partially lined, and the feel of the fabric clinging to my lower arms is very unpleasant. On the plus side, it seems to be well made (I've only had it a short while), and it is compact. Size definitely runs large -- I am 5'7" 180 lbs., and medium is pretty big on me. I'm glad I looked at the reviews and didn't order a large.

Columbia knows their stuff and this jacket is no exception. The fit is excelent, and the style is timeless. I weigh 185# and have a small pudge in the stomach...not an issue with this jacket. Light weight and VERY fuctional for many lifestyles. Whatever the ocassion, this jacket offers warmth, and protecton from the elements...great stuff this Omni-Tech. Great basic shell
December 17, 2010

This is an excellent purchase if you are looking for a nice basic rain shell. It doesn't have a bunch of techie zippers and features the fiddle with, just good rain protection and a decent hood. I have worn it in some sporadic showers so far, with no leaks to report. The size runs smaller that I would have expected... On my 5'8" 170lb frame, it fits a little too snug if you are layering with a fleece. Move up a size if you want to wear any insulating layers other than the shirt on your back. Great value in a basic outer layer.

Highly satisfied with Columbia Watertight Raincoat
December 11, 2010

I looked at numerous raincoats after getting tired of being soaked whenever I rode my bike in the rain using so-called "water repellent" products from other makers. This coat seems very waterproof, and the seams are sealed, and it seems to breathe well too. It fits me great (I got XL, and I'm 6'2" and fairly thin). Good cuffs will velcro up tightly. Lightweight, packable, I like the hood. With a fleece underneath, it's a good winter coat too because it's truly windproof. Best of all was that it was priced acceptably. Thank you for reading.

January 14, 2013

Received the jacket one week ago and like other reviews -- it does fit a bit on the large size. I am 5ft 11in and about 170lbs. I have wide shoulders and thus usually go with large jackets/shirts. I was very hesitant to go with a medium on this but after reading the reviews which say it fits larger than normal, I went with a medium and I am happy I did. Still enough room to have a sweat shirt under the jacket during chilly days. The quality of the jacket is excellent. I have not had a chance to test it in the rain but I am certain it will do well. I purchased this for an upcoming cruise to Alaska (where it can get wet in May/June) and I like the way it rolls up nicely for packing.

Good budget jacket
January 21, 2011

I have mixed feelings about this jacket... On one hand it's bulky, not superlightweight, has a zipper that gets caught too often, isn't terribly breathable, and the hood wasn't a great fit for me. On the other hand it kept me dry for a month in Iceland in late summer, where the rain comes often, abruptly, and at extreme angles due to the wind. For that I'm very grateful. And it didn't cost a lot. It's not ideal but it did the job well. First the negatives. I got a size too large, I'm 5'9", 145lb, and the jacket was very bulky on me. This would be a plus if I wore it over a down jacket, but for everyday wearing it was too big. At roughly a pound in weight, this isn't a super lightweight jacket, not compared to something like the Marmot Mica, nor does it pack small. This may be a non-issue for the average camper, but those who count every ounce will want to look elsewhere. The fabric, while waterproof, isn't very breathable. I sweated a lot. But since this was my only hardshell in Iceland, I was wearing it a lot, even when it wasn't raining. Maybe I have a small head, but I had a hard time getting the hood to sit in such a way that I could look around without it getting in the way. Maybe a size small would have solved the problem? I really dislike the zipper. It's my major gripe with this jacket. It was always getting caught on the zipper cover flap. Zipping took patience and, in most cases, two hands. I didn't often zip up on the first try. But despite these problems, this isn't a terrible jacket. It does what it was designed to do - it stops the rain. As mentioned, Iceland can be a very wet, windy place, and when those things happen at the same time the rain can come almost sideways at you. This jacket kept me quite dry when staying dry was important. My feet got wet, and my pants, but not my top! The travel guides all stressed how important good raingear is on this island. I wish I had taken the warnings more seriously, but I was lucky to have gotten a Watertight jacket. It feels durable as well. A lighter expensive jacket might be more prone to tearing, but I didn't mind taking this one through bushes and up rocky slopes, or stuffing it in my pack. I don't think I managed to damage it in a whole month. When I bought the Columbia Watertight I didn't know how important a good rain jacket can be, and I wasn't going to pay much for one. It was cheap and had really good reviews, so I bought it. My next jacket will be something lighter and more breathable and about $90, like a Marmot Mica, but I think I lucked out at the time by choosing a jacket that turned out to be, in fact, Watertight. I would recommend this jacket for those seeking a solid, cheap jacket that will keep them dry, those who have patience with zippers and aren't concerned about bulk.

Best jacket ever bought
June 13, 2012

This is the best jacket I have ever bought. I bought this jacket for my dad last spring. A lot of friends of him asked him where to buy this jacket after he went to hike with his hiking team. Then I placed an order again from altrec.com with great deals, purchased 7 jackets, but different size and colors for dad's hiking teammates. They said this jacket is great to wear when you go to hike for all seasons. You need to ware a down jacket under the jacket in winter for sure. Also you may feel sweat in summer if you wear it all the time. But I am sure it will keep you dry from the rain! The weight is average, but packable, so you can put it in and take it out from your package easily. All dad's teammates love this jacket, they would recommend it to their friends and families for sure!

Great lightweight outerwear
December 28, 2012

Wore this for several weeks straight during periods of foul winter weather, including snow, rain, wind. No lining makes this an excellent outer layer for rain gear or layered work clothes (great for snow over a fleece) and the hood is actually useful and functional as opposed to many other I have found to be useless. Good breathability but not windproof- it will cut thru, but this is still ideal for exercise or working outdoors. I like the Velcro cuffs and pockets- the zippers aren't great- I'd expect they upgrade to a better zipper in the next version, but the materials and workmanship are solid. Buy with confidence.

Good Jacket - Two Concerns
December 11, 2010

I am 6'3" and about 190 lbs. I purchased this jacket in an XL and it fits me a little loose. I prefer a looser fit because I want to be able to wear other layers underneath in cold weather. Be aware that this jacket is considered a "shell" and is NOT insulated. I was somewhat undecided if I would need a "tall" size for my height but the XL is fine. The sleeve cuffs extend down to almost the knuckles of my hands and the jacket itself extends down to my upper thighs. I like the look and feel of the jacket. The hood covers my head, neck and part of my face very well. The jacket is easy care - it can be machine washed using powdered detergent and tumble dried Here are my concerns... First, the sleeve cuffs are adjustable because of the Velcro. However, I have not had much luck with Velcro on clothing in the past. The exposed Velcro tends to attract dirt and it seems to wear relatively quickly. I'm afraid the same things will happen with this jacket. Secondly, the jacket zipper has caught on the material a few times and it is not easy to gently free it. If the zipper was forced, I could see it ripping the material. Finally, not really a concern but a general comment. The jacket material is soft but a little "crackly". The noise does not bother me but it might other people. Overall, I am pleased with this purchase. I just hope that the jacket proves to be durable.

Pros: Performance, easy care, Cons: velcro cuffs

Columbia knows their stuff and this jacket is no exception. The fit is excelent, and the style is timeless. I weigh 185# and have a small pudge in the stomach...not an issue with this jacket. Light weight and VERY fuctional for many lifestyles. Whatever the ocassion, this jacket offers warmth, and protecton from the elements...great stuff this Omni-Tech. It must be some magic material/coating, and I will likely buy another one. The next purchase will be one with a hidden hood. Columbia has you covered, and Altrec has a huge selection to choose from as well.

Great jacket for traveling
January 23, 2012

This is the second time I've purchased this jacket. I had my first one for 5 years and it survived 2 years in Asia, camping trips, day hikes, bus rides in Laos, and any other torture I could put it through. It only died when I lent it to a friend who dried it on high heat and basically melted some of the fabric on the arms. I primarily bought this jacket for traveling abroad, as it's lightweight and packable, which makes for a perfect pillow on overnight bus/train trips, if you get cold on a long flight, or if you're stuck on a slow-moving ferry. I used it during the rainy season while teaching in Thailand and Laos, and it kept me dry, yet allowed me to remain cool in the hot, humid conditions. As previous reviewers noted, the jacket fits large, which makes sense since you can use the jacket for an outer shell if you're traveling or living in cold climates. I'm 6'2" 170 pounds, and the jacket fits me just right, not too tight or baggy. Other competing companies probably sell comparable products, but in this category at least, I've only owned a Columbia and it's an awesome jacket. I highly recommend it.

jacket looks good and light. However, I need to return it because the size was way too big. My boyfriend is 5'11 and 165lbs, athletic build. He usually wears Large in everything.

Pros: water proof, compact, Cons: does not breathe!

Best jacket for oregon weather
December 05, 2012

First off got the jacket sooner then expected, but had to send back because it was too big. Sent back and got a new one just as fast. Very lightweight, very waterproof water just beads up and rolls off. Have had the jacket for about a month and couldn't be happier. Can be worn fall through spring while its cool just need a sweatshirt underneath when it's real cold out and your golden. Only thing I was worried about with the jacket was the thickness, my puppy would jump on me and was afraid her nails would puncture through but it's happened a million times now and is still perfect so it's pretty durable too. Just great waterproof semi wind proof jacket definitely recommend it for all those fellow Oregonians out there!
