Sure beats jeans
February 18, 2013

I first discovered Craghoppers during a trip to Scotland a few years back, bought three pair, and regretted not buying more. I am thrilled to discover that they are now available through Altrec. Most of my trips involve a combination of civilized pursuits (nice restaurants, tourism, city exploring) and a bit of outdoor adventure (hiking, climbing) to work off what the nice restaurants have put on. I long ago gave up jeans for travel as too bulky, too heavy, too uncomfortable for hiking, and miserable when wet. Most "mountaineering" trousers I've tried look like they were tailored by a tent maker; Craghoppers are nicely cut and more than stylish enough for a night on the town. Even so, they are extremely comfortable, quick drying, and in my experience, ideal for hiking and light climbing. This means that a couple of pairs of Craghoppers is really all I need to cover just about any eventuality. The material used is a little heavier than the lightweight nylon or other synthetics used in many hiking pants. This seems to allow them to wear well and hold up to rocks and scrapes. If you're planning a trip to the hottest tropical regions there are trousers on the market that might be a little cooler, but none that will look better. The fit is true to size. While I am 6 foot 2, and usually wear tall sizes, I found the regular length to be adequate. At this length they are perhaps an inch or two shorter than I would wear in dress trousers, but I don't wear dress trousers with hiking boots. A nice feature of the Craghoppers is that while they come with a synthetic belt with plastic snap closure, the trousers also have belt loops that will accept a rather wide belt if one prefers. I have a couple of pairs of "hiking" pants with non-removable, non-replaceable integral belts, which are miserable. The belts refuse to stay tight, and on one pair I have, the placement of the integral "loops" is extremely uncomfortable. I will take the option of my own belt every time. The first Craghopper Kiwi trousers I purchased were not convertible; I've added three pair of the convertible design to cover summertime trips/hikes. Saves hauling around shorts, "just in case," and the convertible feature is not too terribly obvious. I've been fortunate enough to travel to a lot of places, and I've finally found what are the closest-to-perfect trousers yet encountered. You can find pants that look good, that pack easily, that hold up outdoors, or that can be washed in a sink. Craghoppers are the first I've found that combine all these attributes.

Great Pants
October 30, 2012

I had purchased these pants thinking that I would be using them on a backpack trip the end of October, unfortunately the trip was cancelled. These are some of the most comfortable pair of pants I have worn. They seem to be well put together, with heavy duty zippers. At first I was a bit disappointed with the shallow front pockets, but found that there is a separate zippered pocket on both sides, so if your worried about losing anything out of your pockets the zippered pocket will take care of that. My only complaint is getting the pant legs over my boots when going to shorts. And at the price they are less expensive than most convertible pants.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Great value, very comfortable
