Well made, but design is a bit off
January 15, 2013

I was looking for a smaller alternative to the standard messenger bags I've carried for years - something to carry my iPad 3, together with a few essentials for my work. The Frankton bag seemed like it would fill the bill, and the sleeve compartment does hold the iPad comfortably - not only with a Logitech keypad/cover affixed, but with a neoprene sleeve over the works. The construction of the Frankton feels strong, and I appreciate the simplicity of the basic design and look. The additional open compartment and the zippered pockets, one on the the front of the flap and another on the front of the interior face, are important features, allowing me to carry a few odds and ends, an energy bar, a couple of small tools, pens and pencils - but here's where a significant design flaw becomes apparent. If I stick regular-length pens and pencils in the provided slots (I still need to carry those, since my work requires some writing and drawing in the field), the zipper on the interior pocket is blocked: the slots are just too high, although there's adequate space to have placed them lower, and maneuvering the zipper pull behind the pens and pencils is a real pain. I was also anticipating carrying an 8 1/2 x 11 pad of paper, and the open compartment falls just short of accommodating that - Altrec's list of dimensions makes that clear, so I have to take the blame for relying on another vendor's dimensions, but with slots for writing instruments, wouldn't something to use them on make sense? The front of the open compartment is scooped pretty low, too, so it's not as secure as it could be. The fully adjustable strap makes an annoying squeak with every step I take as it rubs against my North Face winter jacket, but I'm guessing that's just an unfortunate coincidence and looking forward to warmer days. The Frankton is well made and incorporates some good ideas and useful features, but it might have benefited from a bit more field-testing before being taken into production.

Pros: Build quality, good value, Cons: flawed design

Third bag I've bought
April 02, 2013

This is the third DaKine bag I've bought. Got one for my sister-in-law for Christmas. She wanted a small bag for her iPad. After several months, she says she really likes it. Got this one for my son (a plain black). He seems very satisfied. Just got another one for my mother-in-law. She liked the other two and thought a similar one would be perfect for her iPad. I like that each bag is a different pattern, so they can easily tell them apart. The women's are feminine and they like the style; my son's is NOT feminine... he appreciates that. Small enough that it doesn't feel like a brief case. Large enough that it can carry a few more essentials than just the iPad.
