Exped Downmat 9 Sleeping Pad

Warm up to the notion of sleeping on snow and cold rocks with Exped's Downmat 9 air mattress. This down-filled mattress features high loft goose down with three times the insulating warmth of any mat with a similar weight, so it helps keep your backpacking and climbing sleeping bags working at their optimal thermal rating potential. Exped noted in recent studies that heat loss to the ground is often three times greater than heat loss to exposed air, which means that many climbers, snowshoe enthusiasts and winter backpackers are better off spending their money on a better mattress than warmer sleeping bags with lower temperature ratings. The Exped Downmat 9 air mattress can reduce heat loss by a staggering 65%, and because the mattress is insulated with down instead of foam, it packs into a diminutive 12 x 5 in. stuff sack. While the Exped Downmat 9 air mattress could compress further, light foam barriers built into the mattress prevent the down from sifting through the valves or migrating between the baffled chambers, eliminating cold spots. This Exped Downmat 9 includes a distinctive pump/packsack that allows quick and full inflation within minutes, so you never have to worry about the humidity in your breath dampening the down fill (the down fill has a special Nocar treatment to minimize condensation throughout many seasons of use). If you want to save a few ounces and don't need a sub-zero rating, take a moment to compare features on the Exped Downmat 7.

  • Fast-drying, slip-resistant laminated polyester cover fabric
  • 8.8 oz. (250 g.) 700-fill high loft goose down with a Nocar treatment to minimize condensation
  • Slip-free textured polyester surface
  • High frequency welded seams and valves
  • Baffle construction eliminates cold spots while enhancing cushion
  • Pump packsack included
  • Loops attach pump packsack to mattress so it doubles as a pillow
  • Temperature rated to -40F (-40c)
  • Expanded thickness: 3.5 in. (9 cm.)
  • Open dimensions: 70 x 20. in. (178 x 52 cm.)
  • Rolled dimensions: 9 x 6 in. (23 x 16 cm.)
  • Total weight: 33 oz. (940 g.)

Incredible
For years I backpacked with a hamock until I experienced some back problems and switch to being a ground dweller. I have a prolite 4 and it still leaves me pretty sore in the morning. There is absolutely no comparison. The Exped is far and away the most comfortable thing I've ever used for backpacking. It is well worth the extra weight and cash.

Impressive
This mat is the best I've owned. It's a bit heavier then others of similar design but it's expected for a thing rated to -40C. All is top quality and thought-out.

exped downmat 9 is close to perfect.
This is by far the most comfortable nights sleep I have had in the woods. The temps were in the low 20's, it I am a cold sleeper, and was noticeably warmer than when I sleep on my thermarest. Way to go. The only thing that might be improved on would be to decrease the diameter of the tubes, and double them from six to twelve. Just a thought.

Well worth owning!
I can't imagine a pad more comfortable than this one! I highly recommend it! I just purchased two more for my daughters who are joining me on a trip to Nepal. They quit joking with me about my GREAT sleeping pad once they saw how comfortable and warm I slept on previous trips!

Great Pad!!!!
Able to use the pad this past weekend camping in SW Virginia during a pretty cold spell with some snow. Slept great both nights and stayed extremely warm. Didn't bother blowing up pad with the cumbersome, slow to fill pump sack and just put good old fashioned CO2 to use and filled up in no time. Highly recommend this pad!!!

Best pad I've owned
The first time I got to try out the Downmat was on the floor of my aunt and uncle's house, and it performed like a champ under those not-too-grueling conditions. I'm a side-sleeper and it kept my hips and shoulders very happy, and kept my body toasty warm. In slightly more challenging conditions - the outdoors - it was even better. I'm glad I learned to use the pump sack while inside, however. For those having trouble understanding the pump sack, you have to unplug the well-hidden plug on the outside - its under the label ribbon on the bottom of the sack - then put the air valve in from the outside as well. The pump sack instructions are the only downfall I can think of for this awesome product. Whatever you do, don't use your breath to inflate it, since you'll add moisture to the down and negate all the happy insulating properties. All in all, a great product!

Worth every penny
Finally solved my back issues while sleeping on the mountain. Does the job all seasons including 19 below last winter. Bag/pump system a little confusing. Easier to inflate by mouth - takes seconds.

Outstanding! Worth the investment.
Great comfort, low bulk and weight. I thought I'd sweat to death in summertime temps, but that was not the case. Overall, the best inflatable backcountry mattress I've tried (and I've owned/tried many).

great
I slept on my new Downmat 9 perfectly,it is very comfortable, the pump works as well. Looking forward to nights on Kilimanjaro at 16000 feet, which the mat is intended for.

Does its job well
The connection between the stuff sack pump and the mat could stand to be more positive , ,slips off if you try to inflate in a hurry . Have both the Exped 7 and the 9 , advantage with the 9 is you can deflate it for a softer firmness and still have plenty of loft , obviously the Exped 7 is more compact for packing , would definitely purchase again , probably the 7 unless using in sub-freezing conditions .

Very Nice
This pad is sweet...its super warm, light, and easy to inflate. You really notice a difference with the down when your on the snow or cold ground. Its easy to inflate with the stuff sack too...Highly recommended, definitley worth it!

Fantastic
Expensive but worth every copper penny you spend on this outstanding mat. The first time I used the mat, we were at 7,000 ft. and the air temp was approx. 30 degrees F. Slight wind brought the temp down even further. The mat performed flawlessly and I slept comfortably all night. The Exped Downmat 9 compresses down very nicely to fit in its snug sack (which doubles as the pump sack). The mat takes up about the same space and weight as my previous mat. All in all, no regrets.

Love this mat!!!
By far the most comfortable sleep I've had camping. Nice and warm too. Not any heavier than my thermarest but packs smaller and sleeps MCUH comfier. Usually wake up a bit stiff in mornings, but not after sleeping on this.

Exceptional!
I read some great reviews before buying this mattress, and now that I've properly used it (snow cave @ 12,000 feet... Pearl Basin, CO) I can add my own rave review. It's really a marvel of engineering, materials and craftsmanship - typical Swiss attention to detail. Most reviews stated that it took awhile and was a little cumbersome to inflate. It does take awhile, just like any true air mattress will, but I found the inflation method (using the stuff sack) to be ingenious. It worked quickly and flawlessly for me. But the best part is the performance - unparalleled comfort and warmth. Combined with my 27-year-old down bag (a sentimental favorite) I was completely comfortable throughout a cold night (our cave wasn't quite as warm as it would have been if we had the time to construct a proper windblock). My partner wasn't nearly as comfy on his Therma-rest, even though he was bundled in fresh thermal underwear and midweight fleece. I love this thing, and am now a big fan of Exped. BTW, consider getting the DLX model - it's 6 inches longer and wider, which makes a surprising difference in comfort (in weight as well, unfortunately).

Awesome -- when it works
I used this mat on Denali, and was able to use it without a closed cell foam pad even up at 17,000. Amazingly comfortable and warm. However, that was also the time it chose to fail (hole over the inflation valve, which was irrepairable). Some concerns about durability.

Very disappointed!!
My partner & I had these recommended to us by friends, however, after the 2nd trip, the baffles "popped" leading to a very uncomfortable nights sleep. I cannot find anyone to contact in regards to this problem??!!
