The Filson wool vest is perfect for the outdoorsman. It is warm, fits well under a coat and is an excellent choice for layering clothes. Extremely well constructed with pockets located in the right spots. This garmet is not for wussies.

Mackinaw Wool vest is perfect for the outdoor and also for the office . I always wear this vest under my sports coat . It is warm and good looking ! I ordered another color right after I received a first one . Highly recommended item .

the best layer...

Filson`s Mackinaw wool vest is probably the best layer that I own. It has been durable, warm and good looking for many years. The other reviews are correct in their sizing recommendations. For a better fit, you must order a size larger than your suit shoulder size. For example, I am a 42L in a Canali suit coat. I purchased this item in a 44. Perfect! This is money well spent!

Just what you'd expect from a Filson...

I purchased this vest for my husband this past Christmas. He currently owns a Double Mackinaw Cruiser and wanted something that he could wear as a layering item and keep on while indoors. Well, this Mackinaw wool vest fit the bill exactly! The quality is superb and the wool is everything you'd expect from a Filson product...tightly woven yet soft and supple to the touch. My man loves the black version and has already given me his Christmas wish for 2012...the navy Mackinaw vest! Need I say more?

This is an great vest for cold conditions. Quality is amazing, stitching is very tight with heavy wool. A little stiff but I am sure it will soften with wear. I am 5'11" and 180 lbs, between a medium and large in sizing. I ordered a size 40 due to other reviewers saying it was over sized, but it was too tight. A size 42 is perfect. My vest is brown, and I will be ordering another in charcoal as soon as it is available. An excellent purchase!!

All the excellent detail and craftsmanship you would expect from Filson. Cut very roomy. I don't plan to wear a sweater underneath this vest, so I needed one size smaller than my usual suit coat size.

Great vest! Nice wool,true to size-fits my husband perfectly. The only idea to improve the design would be to add pockets on the inside of vest. Otherwise,very pleased with the purchase.

I wear a size 43 or 44 suit and I ordered this vest in 44. It was WAY too big--felt like about a size 48. The other thing that surprised me was how stiff the fabric was. I guess it would break in over time, but you would definitely have to be willing to wear an uncomfortable vest for a while. I don't doubt it would be warm, but so is fleece and down. And to me, they are more comfortable to wear.

I love this vest. Immediately bought another! Now I want more colors. Beware because the size fits a little small, so if you are planning to wear anything bulky under it, go up a size.

I bought this vest for my boyfriend. He loved it. His suit size is between a 40 and a 42 so I got him the 42 vest. The 42 was a little big.. I got him the 40 now and it fits perfect!

Filson Vests are Awesome

This is the 4th Filson Vest I have purchased in the last 35 years. One has worn to a very mellow light green, 1 was lost in luggage, and now I have two fairly new ones to work with whatever I'm wearing that day. Everyday. Rain or shine, it is the perfect vest for keeping me warm, and unlike down or fleece, it has the weight to be comfortable, and the durability to be worn in all conditions. And it unique enough that my customers comment on it, my employees tell them to go talk to "the guy in the wool vest", and I am comfortable in all but the hottest summer day. And buying the last one through Altrec was better than waiting for my next trip to Seattle... OBBG

I couldn't be more pleased with the high-quality materials, and workmanship on this American-made, 100% wool vest. It's rare to find anything that approaches this level of quality. I like the dark green one so much, I'm considering getting the brown, grey and black versions as well. Warm without being bulky; suitable for the woods or going out; an indispensable addition to the wardrobe.

Another absolutely superb Filson product! Very heavy durable wool. Lots of handy pockets to stash stuff--glasses, pens, phone, flashlight, etc. Great to layer and also great to toss on when it’s chilly inside. Roomy enough to wear over bulky sweater.

This is my second Mackinaw vest. My workplace is business casual, and since we no longer wear sport coats I lost an insulating layer. The Filson always looks wrinkle free and it keeps your core insulated in the office. It is also warm in its more traditional role under a winter jacket when you want extra warmth without the bulk binding your arms up in your sleeves.

This vest is built for a lifetime of wear. Wool retains much of its warmth when wet, unlike down which loses its warmth, and fleece which retains virtually none to begin with. I have lived in this vest for 3 weeks in Northern New England during the winter while working with the electronics of an ocean going vessel right on the coast, and I can certainly say that it performs. This product delivers all that you could ever want from a wool vest; heat retention and durability. And yes, the wool (which is the heaviest gauge I have encountered) becomes softer with wear.
