The Best Vest
January 11, 2012

I have worn this vest almost every day for the last few months. It is extremely versatile which allows me to wear it from the office to the backcountry! So far it has shed water like a duck when I have worn it in the rain. In the cold and wind it performs like a true champion. Wearing this vest is the best thing I have done to warm up my core. I sized up to an XL because I felt this vest runs a tad bit small, but now I have room to wear a couple layers beneath it if I need to. The look is very professional and stylish and the feel is incredibly comfortable. I thought the neck would be somewhat itchy but I was pleased to find a soft lining around the inner portion of the neck. This is my favorite piece of gear now!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, warm pockets!

Love it!

I purchased a similar product from a different manufacturer 12 years ago, wore the heck out of it and had been looking for a great quality wool vest for the past 3 years to no avail until I found this one. Fleece vests are abundant, which are OK, but nothing like this Loden Ibex wool. No itch, and unlike fleece doesn't attract pet hair. Also much warmer. It's a bit pricey, but worth every penny as I have a feeling it'll be with me for the long haul (I didn't comment on the durability because I've only had it for a few weeks, but I suspect it will wear like armor) Great product and well made! No cons!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, not a pet hair magnet

great vest
November 20, 2011

As my nickname suggests, I usually buy Patagonia. However, I'm not a big fan of their vests. First, I'm not a fleece guy; I don't like the feel. Second, the fit of many Patagonia garments over the past few years has been, to say the least, inconsistent ... and more so in vests than in other categories. So, I gave Ibex a try. I now have both the Scout Vest and Arlberg Vest. Both are sensational!!! The wool feels great: on the Scout, it's merino wool; on the Arlberg, it's Loden. The two are thus very different - the Scout is great UNDER an outer layer, and the Arlberg is best AS an outer layer. (I don't heat the house to more than 60 in the winter, so I wear it as an outer layer INDOORS too.) With respect to fit, it's a tricky situation. Ibex makes 3 conventional vests (plus several more that are clearly outer-wear): Shak, Scout, and Arlberg. The Shak (the lightest) is "form-fit," while the Scout and Arlberg are "semi-fit." Form-fit is equivalent to Patagonia's slim fit (if not a tad slimmer); semi-fit is in-between Patagonia's slim and regular fits. I'm 5'8"/155 lbs, and usually wear a Patagonia M in regular fit; I religiously stay away from Patagonia slim fit. I tried on an Ibex Scout in both M and L. Both "fit," in the sense that I could easily zip the M (which means of course I could zip the L). However, the M was snug, and a bit short, even for me (who is short). So, the L it was, in both the Scout and Arlberg (which do indeed fit similarly, although the difference in wool weight is quite noticable, and affects the perceived fit a little). Both the Scout and the Arlberg are superbly made, feel (and look) great, and are very, very different (and BETTER) than the usual fleece. And, oh, did I mention - WARM?

My Arlberg vest
December 23, 2011

This is the 1st Arlberg product I've owned and it won't be the last. It is comfortable, warm and has the feel of a natural material which is something not possible with synthetic fibers. It has body, feel and weight not found in vests I've owned in the past. I would also recommend it to anyone who has a concern for our environment. When washed, no fibers are shed into the environment which would be too small to be filtered in other materials. This should be everyone's concern.

Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, natural material
