Carefully crafted for hardcore alpine athletes and skiers who take to remote backcountry terrain in helicopters and snowshoes, the stable and predictable Apache Coomba powder ski is the product of years of collaborative research with the late Doug Coombs, the two-time World Extreme Skiing Champion and Chugach Mountain range heli skiing pioneer. The Apache Coomba is K2's serious alpinist powder ski, without the twitchy characteristics found in some experts-only skis. It features shaped tips and a progressive sidecut to provide predictable turning performance in variable snow conditions. The refined turn control and forgiving qualities make the Apache Coomba ideal for advanced skiers who are new to heli skiing and natural backcountry terrain. K2 balanced the flex pattern throughout the length of the Apache Coomba and gave it a 102-mm. waist for superb floatation in deep snow and better control in frozen crud. Doug Coombs and K2 gave the Apache Coomba a light and predictable fir wood core with a triaxially-braided, torsion box construction. K2's Mod Technology helps dampen vibration and minimizes ski chatter at speed on wind-scored glacier snow. K2 compares Mod Technology to shock absorbers in an off-road car. It's an "elastomeric secondary core" that's independent of the wood core that dampens vibrations without taking anything away from the overall ski flex. To say that Doug Coombs made an impression on many skiers' lives is a bit of a trite understatement. His warm personality and positive attitude were infectious (even to us at Altrec.com). For every Apache Coomba Ski sold, K2 donates a percentage of the money to Doug's wife Emily, their son, David, and the American Mountain Guide Association's Chad Vanderham Endowment for improving guide education and safety.

I've done a ton of backcountry skiing from tele to heli. The coombas are terrific. They especially shine in being predictable and workable in less than optimal conditions. All these skis work great in good snow. The difference comes with slop, crust and other bad stuff. They can handle the trees too. I was favorably impressed.
