There are a few of us around the office who bought the original Pur Hiker Microfilter when it came out in 1994 and we're still using the same model. A few of us even have the same filter, but filter performance depends largely upon water quality and consistent use of the prefilter attachment. This Katadyn Hiker Microfilter uses a 129-square inch pleated glassfiber media filter that removes everything down to 0.3 microns, which takes care of cysts, bacteria, protozoa and giardia. The compact design and easy pump configuration made it the "best by a long shot" and tops in all rankings in a comprehensive review of all water systems by Backpacker Magazine. We have to agree. If you're pumping water for a large group, consider the slightly-larger-but-more-efficient Katadyn Guide&153; Microfilter.
Works for us!
This is my first filter and after many trips it seems to work just fine. I have noticed that it pumps faster than my friends and I haven't gotten sick yet! yeah!
very nice!
This is a must have, I got one for a fishing trip in the back country that I take every year and I loved it! works well and pumps smoothly.
Very Cool
Not sure how we got by without a decent filter before. This one gets the job done, and is very easy to use.

A Life Saver
I was in a survival situation as my own water filter had failed,a flash flood a few days earlier took all of my food and I was severely dehydrated in a very remote canyon in Utah. An Indian man came down the canyon and had this water filter with him. The only source of water available was the color of mud. The silt was so fine it wouldn't settle even though it had not rained for 3 days. This water filter/pump performed amazingly fast. I'm now a convert to Katadyn.
Great product
I have never used any other water filter since I started backpacking 8 years ago. I hike the Smokies several times a year and this is the filter that I take with me. Works great and it has never let me down. I use the Pur version that I purchased years ago but this is the same filter and I would expect it to work just like the old PUR version did.
Awesome even when
I bought this the month after it first came out and I've only gone through one filter. I recently went to the Great Smoky Mountains and the first time I tried to use it, the filter would not sit down into the pump. Tip:Don't leave it in 100+ degree weather because it will worp. This filter rocks because there are no small moving parts on it. I crammed the filter down inside and it is still serviceable. I will use no other filter.
Crackerjack filter
This filter justifiably won awards in the past. It's lightweight, filters water quickly, and compactly stows away.
impressive reliability
Recently on a hike in 95 degree heat in June 2003 the pur hiker continued to pump water flawlessly for 7 people as other makes clogged and became inoperable
Great buy
Compared to other similar products on market has great shape, size, and weight. Also sticker on box says it meets EPA Purifier standards, something which is not advertized very much. Highly recommended.
Great Little Filter
Bought the Pur version years ago and it's still the one I put my trust in. Running mild bleach water after trips will greatly extend the life of the filter and improve the taste of the water.
Squirrel stole my prefilter
Easy to use. Pumps very well. But left unattended a squirrel bit through the hose and took the prefilter mistaking it for an acorn.
the best..........
Light, quick and easy to take care of...... Takes a lickin and keps on pumping out the water.
better than average
This is one of the best water filters I have ever used. Just returned from a 3 day hike and we had plenty of water. It is easy to use and compact. I would recommend it if you are in the market. The best thing is it was not too expensive.
EXCEPTIONAL
Great little filter that keeps going no matter what you put it through. We went camping on trails with semi-stagnant water and it powered through it. I only wish the filter could handle a higher capacity of water. The MSR does 800 gallons, the Katadyn only does 200 before replacement.
Nice little filter.
We took two of these filters trekking to Everest Base Camp. They worked very well; efficient, simple, lightweight, and small enough to pack as an afterthought on day hikes. One feature I especially liked was the bottle adapter, which fits on just about any kind of water bottle, and can be removed if necessary. Highly recommended
