Old School never goes out of style
February 05, 2013
I've owned older versions of this venerable pack for over 10 years. Its different storage areas really help you keep your gear sorted and organized. I've used this as an oversized day-pack for group (Scout) trips and winter hikes into the high peaks of NH. The daisy chain along the outside really helps with snowshoes, and any other items you may care to lash to them. The capacity is impressive. It could easily be used for hut-to-hut hikes of several days. Looks like they've upgraded the suspension. It used to be a daypack masquerading as a multi-day pack. Now it looks more like a multi-day pack that has the versatility and support to be used for days and longer outings.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueA sweet backpack

I use this pack everyday to bring 30lbs. of gear into the woods including an axe, wedges, tools, water bottle, thermos and lunch box. It is an amazing workhorse! The padding and suspension are outstanding. It has many custom fit features that allow the load to be carried comfortably. This is my second Redwing and I would not hesitate to buy another one.

I purchased this backpack for my 14 year old son who is a Boy Scout. We were all going on a backpacking hike at Hemmed in Hollow in Arkansas. We had done this hike four years ago with lousy backpacks, so I wanted something better. My son loved this backpack, he was able to get his sleeping bag, thermorest pad, jetboiler and two jet fuels, two 32 oz. water bottles in the water carriers, his tent he carried on the outside, on the bottom of the pack. He had all his food and snacks, compressible pillow, his long johns, big merino wool socks, and other miscellaneous items. I liked the roomy interior, the side compartments, the bottom had plenty of loops to use for attaching either your tent or sleeping bag. He liked the extra loops on the pack to attach his camp mug. Also the extra compartment on the front was nice to load all his snacks in and the side zipper compartment worked great for a pocket knife or small flaslight. His first aide kit fit nicely in the outside side comparment. We also liked the compression belts on the backpack, it kept everything on the inside from shifting around during the hike. After we loaded his backpack for the hike and he tried it on, he said "Oh yeah, this is going to be easy". He had to do a weigh in at the troop meeting and we were not to exceed 25% of our body weight, and he weighed in at 150lbs. and with the pack on the total weight was 175lbs. So this pack can carry between 25 to 30 lbs. He enjoyed his pack during the hike, the first day was all down hill over rough terrain, and the next day was mostly uphill for a good four miles over rough terrain. And when I say uphill, I mean we were going up a steep grade for the better part of the day. He loved his backpack before the hike and he loved it after the hike. He said it was a keeper.

I bought the Kelty Redwing backpack for traveling to Europe for a month, and it has not disappointed. It's incredibly roomy and can be weighed down with books, clothing, and electronics without feeling heavy on your back. It's the ideal travel backpack and fits into even the smallest overhead compartment on a plane.

This backpack is perfect for campers who need enough room for the basics plus a little extra. I was able to pack my tent, clothes, camera, sleeping bag, water, tools, and still had room. When fully loaded the pack was still comfortable and the waist belt took most of the weight off my back and distributed it to my hips.

Very sturdy and packs well. Plenty of room in main compartment, front and all pockets. Very accessible to things you need to reach fast. Took the backpack on a trip to Hawaii. Used it as a carry on for the flight and as a hiking backpack. Very good shopping experience with this store. Great packaging and shipping. If you need a backpack buy this Kelty.
