If you love hiking and backpacking in any weather condition, there's no boot better than the top-rated, waterproof and breathable La Sportiva Storm GTX. Lined with a GORE-TEX® membrane, this medium-weight boot has an all-season durable leather upper attached to a cushy polyurethane Aircushion nylon midsole. I went to at least 6 different camping and hiking shops before coming across the La Sportiva boots. As soon as I tried them on I knew they were the ones I needed. They aren't the best looking boots around but they sure make up for it in softness and sheer comfort. Also they have excellent ankle stability and the sole is very confident on the rocks and rough stuff. Highly recommended.

In 1981 I purchased a pair of Asolo trail hiking boots and used them ( and resoled them) for many trips throughout the Appalachians. They fell apart this past summer while hiking in the White mountains. After 21 years, shopping for new boots was confusing, to say the least. Back in '81 we had far fewer "niches" to select from.Anyway I purchased, and returned , several boots including Lowa's and Limmers. They were beautifully made, smelled great,but just didn't fit me well. I love good leather boots and was pretty skeptical about Gore Tex in footwear in general. On the advice of some reviews I ordered a Pair of LaSportiva Storm GTX. When they arrived I was underwhelmed. They just looked "soft" and unable to handle the rocky trails I love. But they fit me just the way I like : Firm around my foot; precise is a good description. I want to feel in control without having my foot move around when ascending or decending steep trails. These boots did that well and had the added benefit of keeping my feet very dry in sloppy conditions. So while I still may not be in love with their looks, their performance has been all I could ask for in a lightweight hiking/backpacking boot. I have noticed their price declining recently which , I assume , has something to do whith their looks being a marketing liability. If you can get beyond that and actually try them on, they may work much better for you than the heavier, "sweatier" boots that I have always believed were the "best". Bottom line : choose with your feet and nothing else. The LaSportiva Storm GTX is a great boot, for me.
