Engineered for climbing and trekking at altitude, the Makalu Ultralite Aluminum/Titanium Air Ergo PA AS is one of the lightest and most durable poles on the market. Up top it has an ergonomically shaped positive angle grip that's tilted forward exactly 15 degrees to move your wrist into a neutral position while holding the poles and improving shock absorption. This redesigned model has a Soft Antishock System that utilizes a combination of internal steel springs and elastomers to minimize vibration. Press and twist each pole to activate or deactivate the system, so you can eliminate the spring on ascents and go for full cushioning on the gravity-aided trail descents. A ten-year parts warranty means that you'll have plenty of ground to cover before you need to consider new trekking poles again.

my first set of trekking poles in my life, and i never looked back except to wonder why i didn't do it earlier in my life, i was 56 years old when i purchased the first set and now i own 3 sets of these fine poles. my last set has rubber handles rather then the cork and i use them the most because of the comfort in the handles in hot weather

These poles are great. I have been using them for several months now and they have saved me from falling on slippery rock, roots, etc... In case of snapping a pole, the Leki warranty is excellent.

In terms of quality, ultralite weight and durability these are just as advertised! The only comment customer might need to know is that these poles do make a cliking sound (from the shock absorbing mechanism) as you use the poles. If you desire a stealthy approach, keep this in mind.

These are excellent, lightweight poles. So far I've only put about 100 miles on them but they have been indispensable on steep uphills and especially downhills.
The "shock absorber" function helps a lot on downhills and the poles are easily adjustible on the fly.
One downside is that the instructions they come with leave much to be desired, but a little time, patience and disassembly/reassembly will quickly acquaint you with the product.
Overall I'm very satisfied with these poles.

First time using any hiking poles, found these to make my hiking experience more enjoyable. Less fatigue on the knees gave me an agressive, powerful feel as I was climbing and a more confident, steady feel as I was decending steep grades.

Positive angle hand grip and feather weight make these very comfortable and easy to use. The extended grip comes in handy, and the tips are super grippy on almost any surface. They make every hike more fun. I’m very happy with them.

James - 2004-08-15Very nice poles.
I used these for a July climb of Fuji. This was more of a crawl up a marble-covered dirt pile than a mountain climb, so maybe my criticisms aren't deserved. I was carrying a 24 pound pack.
Overall, these poles are well designed. The hand grips were comfortable. I'm not sure the shock absorber mechanism was necessary, but it seemed to work okay. Playing with the shock absorber adjustment didn't seem to do much. It would have been nice if these poles had come with rubber tips to slip over the titanium inserts for harder surfaces.
Positive: Light weight, comfortable hand grips, well designed, high tech materials. Under heavy use they did not bend or break, but read on.
Negative: The lower telescoping sections kept loosening during descent. One pole collapsed and I fell. After that I learned to recheck the tightness periodically. These poles remain rather long when fully collapsed (a shorter collapsed length would make them easier to stow).
