Good lightweight boot
December 24, 2011
Lightweight boots with good ankle support. The lacing system is kind of like snowboarding/work boots as the "eyelets" are not closed but the open design. This allows for tighter lacing but may chew up the laces sooner. Sizing is slightly smaller than other boots - I am a solid 10 in Nike/Adidas sneakers and had to go with 10.5 for these boots if I wear cotton socks. For wool socks, I recommend going one size larger than your Nike/Adidas sizing. Also, the gunmetal/gray color combo has a blue hue to it. I wish it was more of a dark monotone gray.
Pros: lightweight, ankle support, comfortable, Cons: open eyeletsGood Lightweight Boot

The Zephyr Mid GTX is a lightweight hiking boot. The boot is comfortable out-of-the-box and requires no break-in period. The boot runs true to size in length and a tad narrow in width. I find the fit perfect for my foot. The Zephyr has a Gore-Tex lining and is waterproof. I have hiked through many creeks without a single problem. I have hiked a few hundred miles in these and overall they are great. I traded out the factory insole for a pair of mold-able Sole Softec Ultras and that gave me the proper arch support. I would not want to carry a heavy pack with these boots. My only complaint is the outer soles. They tend to wear more rapidly compared to my other boots. The soles on the Zephyr are Lowa's own brand and NOT Vibram. For this price, I would expect Lowa to use Vibram soles for improved traction and wear.

These Zephyr GTX are true to size in my case...Excellent fit and comfort from the first day, plus a warranty that cannot be beat as well. Taking these bow hunting in my home state of Colorado this year. The light weight yet sturdy boot will do well. Just remember to mink wax the leather portion for long lasting comfort.

I have tricky feet - usually a new pair of shoes involves many painful days of breaking in. Not with these Lowas. I have been using the brand for many years, and this pair delivers again: they are waterproof, need no breaking in, are light, yet rugged enough for a normal mountain trail. Couldn't be happier. I have used them now for a few weeks on a number of different hikes.
Best Boots

The Lowa Zephyr GTX are the best multi-purpose hiking boots I have ever worn. Probably the most comfortable footwear I own and I like comfort. I will use them in the fall while treking in Spain.
