I just received this item. I also own the Moutainsmith tour lumbar back, which is in many ways comparable. I really like the way both of these packs carry. I use the shoulder strap most of the time, but then if I am doing something more active, I can always clip the waist belt. Fanny packs are a classic nerd item, but neither of these will give you the nerd stigma. When comparing the two packs the Marmot is a fair amount smaller but also has more pockets, including pockets on the waist belt. The Marmot also carries a little better because of the way the straps are attached to the back. One negative is that you really can't fit a normal sized water bottle in the side pockets on the Marmot, which you can easily do on the Mountainsmith.
