Awesome First Down Jacket
November 27, 2011

This Guide Down Hoody was the first down jacket I had ever purchased. It took me almost two months of reading reviews and looking around on websites to find the PERFECT jacket for me. This jacket was better than what I expected after reading countless reviews and specs on the jacket. If you are considering to get the hoody or not; GET IT! The hood of this jacket might just be my favorite part about it. On a cold, snowy night the hoody makes a huge difference in the warmth and comfort of the jacket. All in all, this jacket is by far a great value for what you get. Very comfortable, very warm, and very nice looking. The build quality is outstanding and totally worth the money.

Excellent down with great value
April 05, 2011

This jacket is a great choice for those looking for the following; a less bulky (especially considering its 650 fill) but excellent warmth down jacket, hand warmer pockets and attached hood. It is very light weight and stows well into its inner chest pocket. The length is good as it sits about 4 inches below the waist (medium jacket on myself at 5'7") and enough to prevent the jacket from raising above the waistline when your hands are lifted above your head. Due to this length the double zipper is excellent as it allows you to open it up when sitting. I wanted a jacket which I could slip on in very cold temps. (at least to minus 15C) with only a long sleeve t-shirt on. This jacket can do it! It would be nice to have another interior pocket as the one it has is too big (really made for stuffing the jacket into). Also the loop on the inside of neck area (for securing the excess hood draw cord) could be lower down into the jacket as the cord can sometimes slip out and then get jammed in the zipper. The jacket should really also have fleece on the inside of the zipper flap by the chin/mouth. As for durability I have only had this for about 4 weeks so my comments on durability are limited. However, I can see the build quality looks good and in general I have always been happy with Marmot jackets (this is my third one). Overall this is a great jacket an easily comparable with jackets $100-$150 more.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Great value, slightly longer length

Warm and light
February 25, 2011

Sizes up nicely for layering. Nice deep pockets. Great hood. Warm and light. Folds into inner pocket for storage. For a light 650 fill coat itbus warm at 20 degrees with only a t shirt underneath. Nice. The hip length adds warmth.

Replacement for a massively puffy coat
February 21, 2011

I got this to replace an Eddie Bauer down parka (800 power fill that made me look like the Michelin Man). My issue with that coat and most clothing is fit; I am a cyclist so I am very lean and loose fitting clothing just seems sloppy, ridiculous and unprofessional - at least on me. My other added issue is that I get really cold really easily. I spend a lot of time outside walking in the city and hiking. Down coats are a major issue for me, given bulk-to-warmth ratio. I was drawn to Altrec due to their lifetime guarantee and no hassles return; I didn't want to take chances based on my needs on warmth, quality, and fit. I actually was deciding between Marmot Men's Guide Down Hoody and the EMS Helios jacket (also a 650 power fill parka). The EMS started to get doubted based on shedding. The Marmot was doubted due to it's seemingly light weight. Comparisons were done in a field test - my 17th floor terrace at 17F with 11mph winds. The EMS jacket core warmed up a little quicker, but had cold spots in the arms (uneven batting?). The shedding was a non-starter as it wouldn't cut the job for work or play. The Marmot jacket fit better (very true to size and not a lot of give on Marmot's chest measurements) and stayed just as warm (15 minute standing test) with far less poof to the garment (looks like I am wearing a sweater versus a down jacket). Also of note - the hood is attached; I like it since it's a bit more integrated. It is very very compressible too - which is a great travel option. More importantly it doesn't shed at all. The jacket is slim enough to fit under my Barbour coat, a rain shell, and can be layered with a fleece and a windproof softshell jacket. Only downsides that I could associate with the Marmot are color (not a true black more like an inky dark dark blue) and length (would be great if it was slightly longer to protect the hips). I have been really impressed with Marmot so far, and look forward to using this jacket for a long time.

best jacket !!!
January 11, 2011

Just picked up this jacket for cold weather camping. I tried on a bunch of different down jackets and this one felt like the best one for the money and quality. The outer fabric feels like it will be really durable and the down puffs up really nice. Love Marmot!!

Mens Guide Down Hoodie
November 08, 2010

This jacket is a great option if you are looking for a down jacket that not only keeps you warm in cold, windy conditions, but it packs down very small into a dry sack for backpacking. I love this jacket. When you get sone with a long day of backapacking, grab this jacket out of your pack and you are warm and toasty for the night. Another quality peice of gear from Marmot.

Pros: Great design, Performance, Great value
