the jacket is a bit lighter than we thought, so it needs an extra layer underneath for snowboarding. love the fit and know it will keep the wearer dry.

I bought the Minimalist for winter hikes in the north cascades as well and Washington's rainy winters. This jacket handles both perfectly. Ive used it on just about every trip out of doors since purchasing it, from snowboarding and winter camping to fishing in Puget Sound. Not rain or hail or snow get through this jacket. Even when the DWR wore off and it began to "wet out" I was totally dry underneath. And I cant say enough about its durability, I'm not gentle with my jackets, I use them like what they are, a piece gear. Ive slid down slopes on it, even on my stomach, used it as a sling for carrying water back to camp, stuffed it, stretched it, and generally used the heck out of it, and you would never know. It looks just as good as the day it arrived. I got the Blue and Ive received a lot of compliments on the color. This jacket runs a little big, but not so much that you cant just throw it on over, say a T-shirt. Im 6'2 and 185, I got the large and it fits really well.

Outstanding Shell

In every way, this shell has met or exceeded my expectations. I use it for both urban and wilderness environments and it's the perfect companion for both. Packs down easily in a messenger bag for rainy days in the city... packs down easily in a backpack for multi-day excursions. Breathable and light, but also wind resistant and warm with a couple of layers underneath. It's the only shell you will need from Fall-Spring.

I am an experienced backpacker, although I primarily day hike locally these days. Still I'm out for several hours at a time year round and need good protection. I've owned a number of shells from Marmot, Patagonia, etc. I'm a fan in general of Marmot. I have not had this long, so I cannot speak to durability. But initially this is the best shell I have owned. I like the interior much more than that of Marmot's Membrain Strata jackets, the latter of which I find annoying (I'm not sure why). It also looks great and the quality seems to be excellent. The hood is excellent in that it seems to be large enough for a helmet (which I do not need), yet easily adjusts to not fall over my face as some past shell hoods tended to do when worn without a helmet. The hood also fits very nicely around the side of my head and neck … no bunching around the ears and such. …… As for sizing, I found it to fit like other Marmot shells. At 6'1" and 210 lb I can wear the Large, but found the XLarge to fit much better (like other Marmot shells). I have broad shoulders and do not like a snug fit.

Easy to Keep With You

My wife and I have now used the Marmot Minimalist in varying conditions from the rain forrest in Indonesia to the ski slopes in Korea. Best part is, because of its packability it is easy to know you will remain dry when you need to. While it can get a little hot in warmer conditions, the pit zips are helpful. In the colder climates we just layer as required. Full disclosure is that we are always fans of our Marmot products and this one did not disappoint.

I walk my hunting dog daily in every weather, and can attest to the waterproofness and wearability of this jacket by staying dry in heaviest rains on windy unprotected Canadian marshes. My dog gets wet. I don't.

Great jacket

Got this jacket a few weeks ago. Have tested in a couple of torrential downpours, and it's been great. Very breathable and very few seams, water just shook off of it. Can't wait to take it up Kilimanjaro later this summer.

This is a great rain jacket. I got it just in time for a few weeks of rain in the bay area! Sizing/Fit: I'm 5-11/155lbs, and the medium fits me well. It is a slightly loose fit, with plenty of room for layering underneath. Length is good for me, though sleeves are ever so slightly short (I have long arms/wide shoulders though, YMMV). Length is good, and it doesn't ride up much with arms waving around. The hood is loose fitting on its largest adjustments, so helmets should be no problem. It tightens down (2 zip-cords in front, velcro patch in back) to a nice snug fit that follows my head movement fairly well. Performance: Jacket is completely waterproof; water beads up and slides off immediately. I wore this jacket with jeans in mild rain, and the thighs of my pants were soaked in 5 minutes ;P. Wind protection is also good, though doesn't seem as exceptional as the waterproof-ness. It breathes well too; I haven't even needed to reach for the pit zips yet. There is NO insulation what-so-ever. Durability: Quality out of the bag is great, and it seems really well made, but I haven't had it long enough to vouch for durability. Limited lifetime warranty from Marmot though. Random comments: --Pit zips are not mesh lined, presumably for weight considerations, but still :( --I read somewhere that the pockets were mesh (could be used for additional venting); this is not the case on my version of the jacket. Doesn't bother me in the least, as the pit zips are huge --There is velcro AND zips on the hand pockets. This always drives me nuts! I only need one way to close my pockets... but this seems to be the case on most jackets. --The pockets are too low for use with backpack waist straps. --Brim on the hood is A+++++ --Waist cinch strap slip loose a little when I tighten it up --I got black, and I'm regretting it a little because it is super plain looking ;) Maybe some accents on next year's version?? Summary: Great jacket! Performs as expected, and expectations were very high given all the glowing reviews. A few minor quibbles that are mostly my personal preferences, but no issues that come anywhere close to taking it down a star. Highly recommended.

Extremely lightweight, which makes it great for hiking and running. The jacket also breathes even with the side vents closed.

I just received this updated version of the Minimalist jacket. I own last season's model and while I loved it, it was always a bit too boxy of a fit. I'm not an alpinist or climber. I buy Marmot stuff for skiing and general wear. But the loose, fuller fit of the Minimalist seem to contradict it's intention. When I tried on the updated version today it immediately felt right. It's tucked in more along the sides without being confining. I could still easily layer beneath my Marmot Powerstretch top or 200 series fleece. But more importantly, it fits great with just a t-shirt on for those Southern, Maine rainy days or chasing Mickey with my three year old in an Orlando downpour. As far as I can see, the streamlined fit is the only difference I noticed. And this is a good thing as the Minimalist was already a killer jacket.

So this is exactly what i was looking for. Its super light weight, but ultra tough. I put that it runs a little large, but if you like to layer some times (like me) and wear a hoodie or something underneath--get your size. I think if you need a really want something for rugged summer rains somewhere, you might want to size down with this one. But hey, thats just me. I think the jacket is amazing and i'm a true large and the large is great.

I used this jacket on a mountaineering trip in British Columbia and it turned out to be better than expected. I purchased a large and I'm 73 in. tall and usually wear a long in everything. The jacket fit great though. The weather during the trip varied from snow to brief periods of rain. The jacket kept me warm and dry the entire time. It was also breathable enough to wear when temperatures became warm but the wind was still fierce. The hood on the jacket is large enough to accommodate a climbing helmet without being too tight. Despite the material being Gore-Tex Paclight rather than their Pro-Shell, the jacket was tough. There were several instances where abrasion against rock would have been a concern, but it held up really well without tearing or damaging the shell. The great thing about it is that if you don't need it, it can be rolled up and compressed enough to fit into a medium sized pocket. Overall, this jacket is great for someone who wants a solid all-weather jacket without paying for any unnecessary bells and whistles. It's light, tough and it'll keep you dry!

Just received this jacket and I have to give it big ups! It is lighter weight than the Pro Shell Marmot jacket I have but still extremely tough matreial to be so lightweight. The fir i great and it has all the features you need when backpacking( i.e. pitzips, adjustable hood, etc.) and nothing you don't. I love the ProShell products but for mild weather activities they are a bit of overkill. The trustworthiness of Marmot combined with proven PacLite performance make this jaket a steal. I am 6'2" and weigh about 210 and XL fits perfectly.

I bought the Minimalist a few weeks back to replace an 8 year old Arcteryx. The fit was spot on and the Pac Lite repelled the afternoon Atlantic downpours common here at the beach. The pit zips ventilated my core and I didn't get too hot walking to work. I can't wait to wear it during the wind and rain of Isle Royal MI this September.

I love this jacket! After having tried several other brands of the same Gore-Tex Paclite material, this feels the best, it doesn't "crackle," and it performs above and beyond in all kinds of conditions. This jacket is great for layering over a fleece or insulated piece and is truly an all-season winner.

Ideal Shell

If I had one word to describe this jacket it would be "quality." The pit zips are covered by two flaps to keep water out. One flap is shorter, relatively stiff, and naturally lays across the zipper. A larger, less rigid flap naturally folds over the shorter one to effectively prevent moisture intrusion. These do not prevent opening or closing of the zippers at all. There are a total of three pockets - all on the exterior of the jacket. The "hand warmer pockets" are spacious, though a hipbelt does cover them. The right hand pocket is very large - extending up to the uppr part of the chest. The chest pocket (left side) is protected with a wonderful water resistant zipper. I am more and more impressed the longer I use the jacket (wind, rain, and snow). Gore-Tex speaks for itself and lives up to the promises. If you are looking for a hard shell that will keep water and wind out while still being relatively light and easy to pack, there is nothing better (or that compares with the price). I'm six foot even, 170 lb, and the large fits over my cold weather gear easily.

I've been looking for a while for a jacket that is really waterproof.I tried a couple so far, but after a while rain was on my skin. With this one my search will stop! Just great, very nice design and high quality materials. It's so light you barely remember you are wearing it! I would highly recommend it to anyone that loves going outdoors. Think about the rest of your body to keep dry, this jacket does the job!

The Minimalist jacket is, as advertised, a very wind/waterproof and highly compressible jacket. Previously, I owned a Marmot Stormshield jacket and I found it a bit more comfortable than the Minimalist—owing to the liner and softer materials used but I find that I prefer the Minimalist because it is less bulky, lighter and sheds water better. It stuffs into a much smaller package. I highly recommend this jacket for everyday, as well as wet weather use. I plan to order the matching pants next.

Marmot Minimalist is excellent

Minimalist is working out great for me - rain-snow. Gore-Tex Paclite is great material. Minimalist seems tougher and more resilient than Precip jacket or similar other brand light weight packable offerings. Slightly larger sizing than anticipated, but nothing major.
