Description

Iconic in the realm of outerwear shells, the Marmot Men's PreCip Jacket has led the performance-value standard for a decade; receiving the Backpacker Magazine 2010 Award for Best $100 Shell on the Market. Updated for 2011, this everyday and multi-sport jacket uses a Proprietary PreCip coating that offers 100% waterproof protection from the elements without sacrificing breathability, performance or durability. Updating its bi-component technology for 2011, the Precip is 50% more waterproof and 20% more breathable with ceramic particles added to the waterproof coating for even greater durability. Given an active cut with Angel-Wing Movement™ to prevent binding that allows for a full range of motion in the arms so the jacket doesn't ride up; underarm PitZips™ that extend into the body provide for aggressive venting. Sporting a full visibility roll-up hood with integral collar, this jacket also has a Driclime® lined chin guard that is moisture wicking. Stacked with performance detail, this foul weather jacket features a double storm flap over the zipper with snap/Velcro® closure, elastic draw cord hem, and slanted chest Pack pockets™ that can be easily accessed while wearing a pack. Rolling down into a compact package that easily stuffs into a pack or tote, the new Marmot Men's PreCip Jacket takes waterproof, breathable weather protection to a new level - going wherever your outdoor adventures take you.

Exactly What I Needed
May 16, 2011

I needed a rain jacket for a couple upcoming trips and this jacket has worked beautifully. The stuff pocket is ideal for travel and the side pockets are high enough so that they can be accessible when wearing a waist belt for a backpack. The hood is a little large but will absolutely keep you dry. Overall, a great jacket.

Great jacket for the rain
December 25, 2013

I love this coat, works great in the regular downpours that my region gets. Can be a little warm when it's over 70F, but the underarm vents help a lot. Super light and keeps me dry! The hood could be better. It is one of those hoods that doesn't really turn with your head. So if you have the hood up you kinda have to rotate your torso to look to each side. Small sacrifice for a great rain shell at a good price.

Great and light weight
May 05, 2011

I purchased both of my college bound sons a Marmot Precip jacket. They needed rain protection and these jackets fit the bill. They are very light weight, zip and velcro nicely, and look sporty for them as well. Whether walking or biking to class they will stay dry. The sleeves and front velcro snug, and the hood works well. They are 5 ft 10 in tall and average build- the large size fits perfectly.

Lightweight Rain Jacket
May 02, 2012

Light, comfortable and functional rain jacket. Nice features are the zippers under the arm pit and shape of the hood (which you can hide in the collar you want to). It fits true to size (I bought Medium and I'm 5'8" and fits perfect with enough space for a base layer). It also has several pockets and is out of a breathable material. I give the coat a thumbs up also because of the reasoanable price.

Pros: Great design, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, windproof/waterproof, light weight

A Fine Product!
May 22, 2011

The Pacific Northwest is a great test for a jacket such as this one. It has performed well through the spring weather. It is waterproof and provides good ventilation for a warmer rainy day. The hood is a must have and nicely integrated with the jacket. The Precip is perfect for taking along "just in case" and is very packable. It is a great jacket and solid value.

I love this jacket. Bought it for a trip to the Red River Gorge, and it was definitely a good investment. Over the course of several rain storms while we were there, I did not have any problems. The fit was good and the jacket did not hold in moisture and get muggy like many raincoats do. I also used it as a windbreaker when I was in wyoming a couple weeks later, and it worked excellently for that as well.

August 18, 2011

Overall, this seems like a quality item at a reasonable price. Wore it in a complete downpour and stayed totally dry. The fit seems a bit large. I am 6' 1" 190lb and a medium is perfect for me. (glad it tried it on at a local retailer first) Cannot speak for the long term durability as the item is new to me, but I think it should hold up.

Best Rain jacket under $100
August 18, 2011

So I used this jacket for a 2 week trip in Europe and while out in Obed, TN for a climbing trip and so far it has not let me down. -Fit quality is very good and quite comfortable. -It does block wind very well but if is colder outside I do recommend another layer as the cold will slice through it pretty easily. -As for water protection, does the job extremely well. Kept me very dry. -One of my favorite features are the pockets. They are kept a bit higher so if your hiking with a backpack with hipbelts, the pockets are right above them so you can still keep your hands warm :). - Breathability is very good for the price range but still not as good as Gore-Tex. if it is hot outside with no breeze, it will get warm quick. For the price it is a no brainer. Recommend to anyone looking for the best price and performance combo rain jacket.

Very nice jacket
May 25, 2011

This jacket works perfect and has managed to keep me dry during a pretty serious downpour! The "gargoyle" color in conjunction with the ripstop type fabric reminds me of duct tape but overall the appearance is pleasing. Oh! I should mention that i have to take off the jacket to re-zip the pit-zips because they are so difficult to keep from binding on the adjacent fabric. Also, I thought this jacket would fold up into a pocket or something but I guess it doesn't. I'm 6'2" 175lb and the Large fits me perfectly. Pro's: Lightweight durable pit-zips(even though they are difficult to use) very economical!

This rain jacket is recess proof
June 08, 2011

Although I've never been in a hurricane, I can say that this jacket stands up to Montana recess duty in the wind and rain. It also does a great job of keeping a person dry at Montana track meets in the spring....which sometimes means the track has to be snow plowed before the cold rain starts to fall for a track day of 45 degrees! Excellent Protection 4 Season
May 07, 2011

I got this item named as North Shore years ago...In addition to the precip jacket it had the fleece inner compartment. It keeps me warm in winter months and protects me from rain and wind in all the other seasons. Now I got the precip jacket for my brother, unfortunately they don't have the North Shore model anymore. However this precip jacket goes perfectly with any Marmot fleece inside and it will again be used for all 4 seasons. Size is not tight and is not loose. It is just right and I am a 250 pounds 6 ft male and wear XL precip. It is lightweight, easy to carry, nice color. Highly recommend it!

Large and Stiff
April 28, 2011

I was hoping that this jacket would have some of the characteristics of Marmot's Mica or Super Mica jacket. No such luck. I purchased a large and it was LARGE. I was also expecting a fabric like the Mica, soft and supple, instead I go the normal raingear material - stiff and unforgiving. It does keep out moisture but it doesn;t have the feeling and maneuverability of the Mica. It also does not fold up into its pocket like the Mica products do. NO GO!

Great backpacking jacket
January 23, 2013

I bought this jacket for my girlfriend in a medium. She's 6'0" tall/skinny and has trouble fitting women's sizes, especially Marmot. Either the sleeves are never long enough, the jacket is too short, or too baggy in the stomach, or too wide. The men's medium fits the way she likes: The sleeves can cover her hands and the jacket reaches halfway down her shorts. It leaves enough room for a Merino baselayer and a down jacket for colder nights/hikes. It has pit zips that help with ventilation. The hood has kept her face dry on many hikes. The outer material is durable and puncture resistant. We know this because we hike several trails in Southern California that are overgrown and poorly maintained. For those backpackers looking to transition to lightweight/ultralight backpacking, the Precip is an affordable alternative to higher priced jackets. It does everything you need without too many extras. And if you're a taller woman and have trouble getting the right size, try it out in men's.

Purchased PreCip pants and jackets for our trip to Alaska. 7 days of kayaking in the rain and cold of Prince William Sound. Very comfortable when paddling and at campsite; stayed completely dry; good ventalition; and very durable. We thought it would be ripped to shreds the way we went through the brush around our campsites, but it looks as good a new (who needs gaiters?!). We use the outfits as a windbreaker. Good piece to always have around
December 01, 2010

Everyone going outdoors should have one of these, or something like it. Nice to always throw in the pack - pretty durable, pretty waterproof, pretty windproof, sorta breathable (use the pit zips), good price. The best part is that you can get these in Long sizing, which really helps for taller folks. Then you don't get the sleeves riding up your arms when raising them, like when rock climbing.

Great jacket; great price
March 14, 2010

Marrot's PreCip jacket has it all; chest pockets and pit zips and an unbeatable price. Unlike many lightweight rain jackets, it is sized to fit over a fleece or lightweight down jacket. There are no seams on the shoulders that will come apart or leak from the pressure of a pack. It is light enough to be included in my lightweight backpacking kit. The PreCip breathable/waterproof membrane does the job at half the price of Goretex. I especially love the design of the hood that folds into a collar.

Good jacket
September 04, 2011

Good quality made rain jacket. Fits a bit large for me and would like to see that it had more draw strings. The hood is rather large and can get blown about alot in the wind if not tightened well enough. Design of jacket is good the hood just seemed abit to large for me. Other than that an excellent rain jacket when bought at a discounted price.

Pros: Build quality, Cons: Bad design

Great quality, I ordered XXL , as I am 225 lbs. The fit gives me a lot of room to wear a heavy sweater underneath. The color I ordered was red and it looked good.

Great Purchase
July 14, 2011

I purchased this jacket for a upcoming backpack trip on the John Muir trail. So far I have only wore it in light rain and performed well. I am 5' 10", 170lb and the large fits very well with plenty of room for layering. So far it seems to be everything I was looking for in a waterproof jacket. Well made and good ventilation.

So far so good!
February 26, 2013

I work at an outdoor school and hate wearing a heavy coat, so I purchased this jacket not only for rain but layering. The fit is generous and, although crinkly, comfortable to wear. The arms are to long for me but using the Velcro wrist adjustments I'm good.....as long as Velcro holds up . I've not worn it in heavy rain but it has done great thus far in light to medium rain. The hood does extend to far over my head making it difficult to see, wish it was adjustable. This & the short time I have had the jacket is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

Cons: hood to low over face

I bought one for my wife and me and we both love it! While it is very lightweight, it protects you from the rain with no problem. I am now a Marmot fan!

I have worn this out in Chicago storms and it has held up great. I am a medium (5'10" 180#) and bought a large for a climb in the Tetons with underlayers. The hood is a bit cumbersome when not in use and it is rolled into collar but it wears very well as a wind/water breaker.

appears well made, but i wonder how well it will hold up. my previous expeience has always been with gore-tex, so this feels "slight" by comparison. mesh pockets never bode well in my experience-they're prone to snagging (then tearing). seams all taped is a nice touch and i like being able to roll the hood up rather than having it hang down my back.

Lots to Like
November 01, 2010

One of the few waterproof jackets around that's available in a tall fit. Being tall I'm used to buying up a size to make sure I get the length - you definitely don't need to do that with this jacket as it's quite a loose fit. Really light and packable, if you're used to multi-layer waterproofs this may feel flimsy at first but I guess that's because it's light and packable! Not worn it in really heavy rain yet but has handled the light-medium stuff no problem. Worn it for cycling a couple of times and it seems to breathe OK although the loose fit means it offers a a fair amount of wind resistance, especially if I open the pit zips. The arrangement for folding the hood isn't particularly sophisticated but is handy nonetheless and consistent with the light-and-simple philosophy of this jacket. Overall I like it a lot and think I'll get another in a different colour.

Excellent Waterproof jacket
September 12, 2011

I had a Precip jacket for several years, but then lost it, so I bought a new one in Aug. 2011 to replace it. On the first day I wore the new jacket, I went to an outdoor event at which it started downpouring heavy rain. I stayed outside to see how the new jacket would work, and I was dry as a bone! The new model of the Precip seems to be much more waterproof than the prior model, and it does an excellent job of cutting the wind as well. For under $100, its hard to see how you could go wrong with this jacket. I use this as my regular jacket in the fall (as a windbreaker) and then use it for some of the wintertime with a soft shell underneath it. I also use this as a hard shell for climbing. Another nice feature of the jacket is that it has a hood that rolls up into the collar of the jacket, rather than just hanging off of the back. I strongly recommend this rain/wind jacket.

BEST LIGHTWEIGHT JACKET
November 18, 2011

First of all, it has the quality of all Marmot products. It is a very lightweight jacket, the fit is true to size, for example I use a Small size in everything and I got the Small and this one fits me very well, I could still use a fleece or a softshell base layer without sacrificing the range of motion in the arms. The breathability and durability are excellent, it is water resistant, not waterproof, because it is a very lightweight jacket, not designed to be a bombproof jacket. I bought this jacket because It has excellents features and it has his own stow pocket, it has a great packability, it is a very important point, I always take it wherever I am going. You could not go wrong with it.

I already bought the Mica Jacket from altrec.com and was very pleased so I couldn't pass up the opportunity when I saw this Precip Jacket on sale. Compared to the Mica, the Precip isn't as thin. However, it is still very nice and will come in handy during any wet weather. I'm 5'4'' and weigh 155 lbs. A M fits fine but it's slight baggy in the sleeves. Can't go wrong with this purchase.

Nice rain jacket, perfect
June 19, 2011

I bought this jacket for the occasional damp or semi-wet approach to some of the areas I climb. The fit and water shedding and windblocking properties are pretty good and it performed as expected in these areas. However, whenever the activity level ramps up so does the condensation inside the jacket. The liner on the jacket was so wet after one approach I took it off and had to let it air dry before putting it back on in 40 degree with tons of wind... All in all, low activity levels and it works fine, for any activity that requires some effort it just does not breath well enough.

So far the jacket seems to be great. Took a spill off the longboard and rolled out of the tumble and the jacket did not tear or otherwise seem damaged at all.

My favorite outdoor jacket-Marmot sets the industy standard
July 15, 2010

This preCip jacket is my third one I have purchased over the past 4 years. My family members seem to have claimed the other jackets.Since I have several pairs of Marmot men's PreCip pants,I never have to worry about the weather conditions outside. The jacket and the pants are constructed of the highest quality of materials and you know Marmot stands behind it products. Also,Altrec.com provides its customer with the total line of Marmot products and their website provides a totally updated description of new items. I feel it is important to mention the fact that the PreCip line is an excellent top layer of protection from the elements. When target shooting or hunting in the Fall,Winter & Sping I can alway add layers under the jacket. The attached hood provides plenty of room for a cap or bandero.

I used this in driving 50 mph wind and rain during an offseason climb up Mt. Fuji - worked great. I was bone-dry after 8 hours in this miserable weather. Tends to be a little large, but you need to account for what layers you are wearing under it. I'm 5'11, 150 lb got a medium and it was a little loose for me

Pros: Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, great warranty

Excellent light weight waterproof jacket
April 15, 2010

Right out of the box I knew this jacket was a winner, but I decided to test it out anyway- by wearing it in the shower. The water rolled right off and the jacket was dry instantly. I have since used it under a variety of circumstances including 2 NY Nor'easters and each time it kept me and my electronic equipment completely dry, even after catastrophic umbrella failure. I've worn it on top of sweaters and t-shirts and it works great for both. I've worn it on my mountain bike and it kept me comfortable. I frequently roll it up tight and put it in my backpack just in case and it has come in quite handy (e.g. nor'easter #2). Just an awesome jacket. Only quibble is that I can't get the hood to roll neatly into the collar.

Great Lightweight Rain Shell!
June 23, 2012

I've had this jacket for about 6 months now. Admittedly only used sparingly, but it hasn't let me down for a moment. Great lightweight option for scooting around town in the rain. Its plain enough design wise that I've worn it to work in a pinch (think Tie's and slacks). Its also been great on the limited hiking trips Ive had it along on. Got caught in an short afternoon rain storm in Yosemite a week ago and it performed admirably. The pit zips are a lovely addition to such a well featured, and VERY well priced jacket. I searched for a while before deciding on the Pre-Cip as my lightweight shell. I couldn't be happier. I'm sure you'll say the same. Don't believe me? Keep scrolling down. You'll only find more of the same. Happy people with a great jacket. Oh! For reference, I'm 5'9", 148lbs. The Small fits like a dream. A little roomy even.

Pro's: Lightweight durable pit-zips(even though they are difficult to use) very economical!

excellent hood, huge arm vents .I'm 5'8" 190lbs,Lg jacket is loose enough to wear over a heavy fleece jacket ot my Patagonia down pullover w/ plenty of room, that being said I probably could use a Med. size But opted for the versatility of using the shell for a wide variety of applications.Packs small enough but doesn't pack into its own pocket. The hood is large enough for a bike helmut and has an sdjustment in the back to make the hood comfortable just covering your noggin. The only issue is that even w/ the huge arm vents it can get warm when worn in muggy conditionc (I live in Virginia) All in all a great shell at a great price!

My son loves it
March 10, 2012

I bought this for my 13 year old son for his first camping trip. It rained twice during that trip but this jacket kept him completely dry. He took it off at night and all his clothes were dry underneath. The good thing is that there is no way for rain or water to seap in. Since that trip he also wears it on a casual basis and also wears to to school as it is usually windy. It is soon becoming his most used jacket.

I usually wear a large jacket (I'm 5'11" and 200 lbs) but got this XL so I can wear it over another jacket, and it works fine for that. Mostly I wear it with just a shirt underneath, and although the sleeves are long, it is easy to adjust them at the wrist with the velcro straps so that's no problem. On My Second Precip
March 07, 2013

I recently bought my second Precip jacket, and I still love it. I bought my first one over a decade ago and with some maintenance it still works well for short time out in the elements. I have patched 2 holes on the old one and it just keeps on ticking. This is not the smallest rain jacket when stuffed into itself, but if you stuffed it into a stuff sack, I think you could get it down smaller. There are also lighter jackets on the market, but at the price, this jacket is awesome for the weight, size, and durability. I stated that is a little big just to say that it is not snug. I like my rain jackets to have a little room so I can use it as my outside layer above base layers.

Pros: Build quality, Performance, Great value

Hood wont stay put
September 09, 2010

The hood is so roomy it wont stay put. Even casual walking with no wind...the hood flops up and down on my head. Forget about it when its windy. Wish there was drawstrings. Other than that its light, has great ventilation and has kept me dry in a downpour.
