good all around cold weather jacket

Very warm, I choose this over the MH sub zero, longer in the sleeves and torso. I tried a lot of down jackets and most were huge, like they expect you to have several bulky layers underneath, this jacket fits well with just a t-shirt but has room for a fleece.

Fantastic

Very pleased with this jacket's qualities and performance. The down is very warm but not at all bulky. I am 6' 0" 185 lbs and the large size fits perfectly; no excess, no waste, and yet it feels quite substantial, a wonderful feeling of measured security and cozy protection against the elements. The Marmot MemBrain waterproof technology works and it's great not to take an umbrella 'just in case'. The hood is also insulated and waterproof like everything else. It is detachable; more important to me, it connects solidly to the jacket; blocks rain, wind, and cold from the back, no fooling around here. The long pit-zips provide aggressive ventilation, which I love, love, love. Lots of handy pockets. Everything about it is high quality. Highly recommend this jacket.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, feels substantive, feels cozy, not bulky

This the jacket i like most
October 26, 2011

I found the at altrec for 20% off and decided to pick it up. It is very warm. So far I've been comfortable in static conditions at temperatures around 20F with just this jacket and a t-shirt. The jacket works great for both casual use as well as hiking. The DWR will keep fog and low amounts of moisture out, but using a shell would be necessary if there's any real amount of precipitation. The finish on the jacket is more of a matte type of finish so you won't appear shiny or with a trash bag type of look. I'm 5'10" 185 lbs and chose the large so I'd have room to layer underneath if I chose to. Similar body types could fit into a medium if a tighter fit is desired.

Pros: Build quality, Cons: Cost

Marmot Mens Shadow Jacket - cut too small
January 05, 2011

Nice jacket. A big plus is that it comes down below the belt line to cover waist and pant zipper. LOTS of features. Lots of attention to detail. Marmot cut no corners with this model. However it seems to be cut smaller than the stated size. The disappointing part is that the area surrounding the neck where the hood zips into the jacket seems to be cut too low so that the entire jacket exerts pressure on the shoulders. Extremely uncomfortable. Gives the feeling that you are carrying a backpack. This may be due to the fact that the jacket is cut small - so I'd suggest you order the next size up from your normal one. I'm a true medium and I'm sending it back to see how it feels as a large. Keeping my fingers crossed that I don't run into the same problem with the neck area.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, great attention to detail, Cons: issue with neck area
