Shifting from day hiking to trail running often involves a shoe change, but that isn't the case with this low-slung waterproof and breathable Chameleon. Beneath the pigskin upper and the cool mesh panels is a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® XCR membrane that keeps your feet feeling more like a gazelle and less like a drenched duck. It's a light hiking/running shoe that's perfect for the active enthusiast who changes their outdoor activities and locations as often as the weather. From the sole up, the Chameleon is built on an athletic last that fits perfectly with a wide range of mid-weight athletic and moisture wicking trail socks. Along the back a wrap-around wishbone backstay helps mold your foot into the superfoam padding for a secure and comfortable fit. The combination of Vibram® Octogrip™ and Trek rubber along the sole help you keep your grip on steep pitches and in slick ditches--just make sure that you sidestep the little ducklings.

These are the best wlaking/hiking shoes I've had. I'm on my second pair now and hope they are still available when I need a new pair. I was not interested in the updated model as these have been perfect.

I've had two pairs of these shoes. The first got me through the towns and mountains of Europe, but were taken from me too soon by my shoe-hungry dog. So I bought a second pair. They fit comfortably out of the box, require very little breaking in, and provide good support for me (190 lbs) and my 20 lb pack. I've already gone on a three day, 40 mile hike with no blisters or soreness. Great shoes.

I heard that Merrell was a good name but now I know why. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a waterproof, comfortable and stylish pair of shoes to wear at any time of the year. No wonder every store that carried them were sold out of them.

Frank - 2004-11-08Comfortable out of the box
I bought them and went on a 7 miles hike with my dog. We walked on a trail with sections that had some rather sharp rocks and my feet felt no ill effects. No bruising and no hot spots. We walked through some water and slop and I stayed dry and comfortable. Excellent support and comfort with no "break in" period needed. You get what you pay for.

These shoes feel very good. Traction is excellent. They also look so good that I hardly want to use them on the trails. Maybe I should get two pairs...one for the office and one for the woods.

I had the shoes out of the box and on the trail the day I received them. The shoes look great and best of all after two hours of hiking my feet were surprisingly comfortable. I'd forgotten about the Goretex until I realized that my feet weren't hot and clammy. So far, theey are my favorite trail shoes.
T - 2005-01-28Comfortable, Poor traction
These shoes are very comfortable and do well for runs and low impact hikes on dry trails.
One major deficiency: These shoes have very poor traction on wet or icy surfaces. I found this ironic considering the shoes' GoreTex fabric. I have compared the traction of this shoe with an older model (M2 Blast) and found the Chameleon's traction to be a serious deficiency. When I first took the shoes for a hike, I discovered the poor traction on a wet stream bank (and subsequently became soaking wet). A few weeks later I again took a similar hike with these shoes. Being keenly aware and dutifully cautious of the poor traction, I still found myself flat on my back-- this time with a torn achilles tendon.
Moral of my experience:
Don't wear these shoes for hikes that may involve slick surfaces; e.g. wet rocks or ice.
Anonymous - 2005-01-07Sock eater
Poor quality control cause my problem with this shoe. The right shoe had defective 4mm ridge in the heal wall of the shoe. As you probably know this can cause at least hard sock ware, and at worst blisters. Great shoe if you don't mind returing it again and again until you get a good pair.
