Just OK
March 22, 2012

I spent months shopping for a winter coat and finally settled on this one because it seemed to have all the features I was looking for -- an insulated, waterproof winter coat that doesn't look puffy like a ski jacket, that's long enough to cover my bottom, and that looks nice enough to wear to the office or to meet prospective clients. This one looked nice in the pictures, it got reasonably good reviews, and it's within my price range. I've been wearing this coat for almost a month now through heavy rain and light/medium snow, and it has kept me warm and dry. However, there are some major annoyances that make me wish I'd bought something different. Pros: -- This coat is really cute, I've gotten lots of compliments on it. It looks nice enough to wear to work or casual enough to wear with jeans. The color (charcoal gray) goes well with black or gray pants, or blue jeans. -- The insulation is warm, and the insulated hood keeps my ears warm and protected from wind. -- It's waterproof. Rain drops roll right off of it, even in heavy rain. -- The size is mostly right. I'm 5'7" and 130lbs with long legs and curvy hips. My measurements are 32B-28-38. I ordered sizes small and medium. The medium was way too big, but the small fits well, even a little roomy, which would be good for layering. -- Even though the hood is not adjustable, it fits me perfectly. It's just deep enough to fit over my head without falling down onto my face. -- The length is great. It hits mid-thigh on me. -- It has ample pocket space for my needs. The internal pocket is really nice. The two front flap pockets are perfect for my keys, cell phone, and some lip gloss. -- The coat is good quality. It feels tough and rugged outside and seems like it will last a while. The inside liner is quilted and very comfortable. Cons: -- There's an inner ribbed cuff that is pretty tight, and on my coat, the right side cuff is tighter than the left. It doesn't bother me when I'm wearing it, in fact, it's nice for keeping out the cold. But the right sleeve always turns inside out when I take the coat off because the tight cuff doesn't want to let go of my wrist. -- The sleeves are shorter than the sleeves of most of the sweaters I wear. My options are to have my sweater sleeves sticking out past the end of the coat sleeves, or to have my sweater sleeves bunched up inside the coat sleeves. If I pull my sweater sleeves all the way through so they're sticking out, the tight inner cuff becomes tighter and is sometimes uncomfortable. I wish the sleeves were longer. -- I wish the two hand pockets were just a little deeper. I have to make my hand into a fist inside the pocket, or my wrist sticks out and gets cold. -- The stand-up collar is made of the same ribbed material as the inner cuff on the sleeves and is equally unforgiving. It really does stand up straight if zipped all the way to the top. It doesn't bend or flex at all. It hits me right underneath the base of the chin and kind of presses against my gag reflex. Because of this, I don't ever zip it up all the way. I wish it was less stiff so it would bend softly under my chin. -- While the stand up collar is nice for warmth, it makes it awkward to wear a hoodie with this coat. I have lots of fleece hoodies, they are my favorite layering pieces. The fleece hood has to go up and then out to get over the collar. I think it looks funny when the coat is zipped up most of the way, but my husband says it looks fine. -- I wanted a longer jacket for the purpose of keeping my bottom warm and dry. This coat has a slight a-line shape from the waist down. Wind blows right up underneath and I get chilly as if I was wearing a shorter coat. I really, REALLY wish it had an internal drawcord at the hem so I could tighten it to keep out the cold. This is my single biggest irritation with this coat. -- The fit at the waist is a little big on me, I wish I could cinch it up when I'm not layering. Another internal drawcord here would allow for a more customized fit. -- The zipper is on the wrong side for a right handed person, and the double zipper is more finicky than a single zipper, so it takes extra care to zip it up. I have to contort my right hand in a weird way. At first it felt awkward and slow, but I'm getting used to it now. -- The dongles don't stay fastened, especially the middle one. They just fall right out. I've started wrapping the dongle through the loop twice, and that works pretty well. It's an extra step, and it takes longer to button and un-button, but it's manageable. It feels very secure when wrapped twice. -- The colors are not as pictured. I ordered both black and charcoal gray. Another reviewer said almost exactly the same thing, but I'll reiterate here to convey my own experience. In the pictures, the black appears as a very dark charcoal, and the charcoal gray appears as a light, almost taupe color. In fact, the black is a true black-black. The charcoal gray is a medium neutral gray, lighter than what I would consider charcoal. The picture of the model wearing the charcoal gray is pretty close to what the color actually looks like. I really wanted a color in between the two, like a darker charcoal gray. I ended up keeping the charcoal gray color even though it was lighter than I'd prefer. The color has grown on me and I'm happy that I chose it over the black. I've gotten lots of compliments on the color. Overall this coat has some really nice features, but it also has many features that are really annoying to me. Others might not be as bothered as I am. I imagine the zipper would be perfect for a lefty, and the sleeves are probably great for someone with shorter arms than mine. Ultimately I decided to keep the coat because despite the annoyances, it does meet all of my criteria for a warm winter coat, but I still find myself questioning my purchase, and I'm still browsing for other coats that are less irritating. When I look at this coat in the mirror and feel its toasty warmth, I'm glad I bought it. But very time I feel the wind whip up inside the bottom of the coat, or I feel my sweater sleeves bunched up inside my coat sleeves, I wish I'd bought a different coat.

Pros: Build quality, Great value, waterproof, good pocket space, cute, Cons: Bad design, short sleeves, too open at the hem, color not as pictured

UNCOMFORTABLE
January 22, 2012

My husband bought this for me for Christmas. When I opened it up I fell in love with with the look of it...until I tried it on. I'm 5'6" 120 lbs and usually wear a small- so that's what he bought. It was WAY too small (couldn't even zip it). Also- the zipper pull is on the wrong side which makes it hard to zip up. We ordered the medium and it was okay everywhere but the cuffs- which were very tight. The other issue is the seam under the armpit- because the fabric is so thick the seam feels like a marble under the arm. Needless to say we returned the medium. Great looking jacket - poorly exacuted.

This coat is wonderful for comfort, warmth, and style. It is well-crafted and seamless. The lining is secure and warm, but the coat itself is not too bulky. All closures are tight and well-designed. My only complaint is that in many of the online photos of this coat, the actual color differs from that pictured. The "black" looks like "charcoal" as pictured online, and the "charcoal" looks more like a light grey. In reality, "black" is solid black, and "charcoal" is how we typically expect charcoal to appear, as a dark grey. I originally bought "black" thinking it was a deep grey, and exchanged it for charcoal. In all, I love the design. The fit is sleek and flattering and functional.

i have a busy life working full time and caring for my young children and looking for a coat that looks a little more put together but also very functional. this is perfect! it's so comfortable and works with everything! i love the material and fit. i'm 5'4" and 133 but larger chested right now (breastfeeding!) so i got a medium and has enough room for me to wear a sweater and not be too tight around the chest. feels really well made and i love the style. definitely worth the price.

Love my Haven parka
December 11, 2011

I purchased this coat right before a trip to London at the end of November, and am so glad I did, as it was the perfect coat for traveling. It's easy to dress up or down and it kept me warm at all times, even at night when it was cold and foggy and I was just wearing a light shirt underneath. It's very light so when it did get warm in the day time, I could wear it unzipped without getting too hot. I haven't had a chance to wear it in a real rainstorm yet, but I've spilled some water onto it, which beaded right off. I have bigger shoulders and hips and usually wear coats in a size large (sometimes XL). I got the Haven in L and it fits me perfectly, even the pockets are at the right hight so I can put my hands into them to keep warm. The only complaint I have about the fit is when the zipper is all the way up the coat is too tight around the neck, so I opted for wearing a scarf instead and not zipping it up all the way. I did notice that there is some fabric pilling where my arms rub against the coat while walking. That's a bit disappointing considering that I've only had the coat for a few weeks, but overall the quality is quite good and the coat is definitely worth the price.

Great value for money
January 30, 2012

I bought this jacket when it was on sale, because I needed a good, thick and warm winter jacket. I live in Providence, RI, and it would be my first winter in New England, so I made a decision based on other reviews. I don't regret it! The jacket is very stylish and feminine without being too tight at the waistline. My size is S, but I find that it is a bit narrow on the shoulders. This could be because of my build, and I think larger size would look bad. So, with thick sweaters it's a bit tight, but still manageable. In respect to warmth, I couldn't ask for more. I once didn't use my beanie hat, so I could tell it was really cold, but my body couldn't feel a thing. In rainy days, it's very protective and waterproof : nothing gets through the sleeves and the hood is just right. The pockets are waterproof as well, and also very spacious, which helps a lot for people like me who like to keep their keys and phone easily accessible. Overall, I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a fair-priced warm and waterproof jacket (but be careful about sizing, maybe trying it on at a store first would be better)

Weird Fit
January 29, 2012

The jacket is really appealing to the eye, but the fit is all wrong. The arms, especially down by the wrists, are waaaaaay too tight, even without layering. The torso area is just fine, so sizing up would have been a mistake (I had the medium; 5'8' 145lbs). Alas, I had to send it back.

Disappointing quality and fit
November 22, 2011

I got this coat for everyday wear. I had seen it online and went to a local outdoors store to try it on for size, to buy in-store. When I tried on a small, it was fitted (ie fine with a thin shirt or thinner sweater, arms were snug but I could lift my arms ok)--I decided to order a medium online so I could wear sweaters and have a little extra room. The medium I received was so tight I struggled to get my hands through the cuffs and to zip it up (I wear a size 4 1/2 ring and am a slighter sized 5'7" and a 34B). Additionally, the Merrell tag on the front pocket was mis-sewn and the pockets were cut slightly differently--it looked cheaply made. What a bummer!

Weird fit.
November 15, 2011

I'm pretty petite and the shoulders of this coat were tight on me and the sleeves were too short. The rest of the coat seemed to fit fine - a larger size would have been too big. The outside fabric was scratchy and uncomfortable. I chose to return it.

Not what I hoped for
February 16, 2012

I've been looking forward to getting this coat for a long time, however it didn't fit me very well. I wanted a shapely coat and this one was too boxy. It could have been more fitted to create a curve in at the waist. I also didn't care for the pockets. They were sewn on at an angle that just doesn't feel comfortable to put my hands in. I also thought the hood should have some sort of draw string, not that I would use it all the time, but when conditions are really windy, it would be nice to pull it in snugly. Also, the cinder/brown looked prettier online. When I got it, it was pretty drab looking. I would have to say that my favorite thing about the coat is the ribbing at the cuffs and around the neck. I think that would really keep the cold out. With a few modifications and new color choices, I think this coat would be worth trying again in the future.

So far I really love this jacket. I haven't tested it in rain yet but its been great for wind and cold. I ordered a medium and am almost always a medium in other clothing items so I would say it's true to size. It's slightly loose in the mid section but that allows for layers if necessary. I LOVE the hood! I purchased it mainly for dog/city walking and would recommend it for that. The one con is that the zipper is a little sticky at the bottom. I tried on one in the merrell store as well which had a sticky zipper-not sure if it's like that on all of them but it was on the two I've tried on, hence the 4 star rating.

Warm Vegan Winter Jacket
December 02, 2010

I'm really nit picky on everything, get ready for a big review... This jacket is warm. For me it's too warm to wear if it's above 45 degrees but I think it will be great once it gets to be colder. I'm 5' 4" 120lbs and ordered a small. I'm used to layering a fleece under my jackets becuase I'm always so cold but with this one a fleece doesn't fit comfortably, but I don't need one because it's so warm. I can wear a sweater or hoodie beneath without it being restrictive. The hood is a good size so it doesn't smoosh down my hair but it doesnt let too much wind in either. The snap pockets are big, warm and soft so your hands, phone and keys can all fit inside happily. The pockets beneath the snap pockets are useless to put your stuff in because they go straight across the jacket so things will fall out, and they're a little low to put your hands in. The pocket in the inside of the jacket is big and I can fit my large wallet inside, so I don't have to carry a purse. The zipper is a pain but all double zippers are for me. The toggles are stretchy and a little longer than i would expect but they've never opened up once I secured them. The material is soft and comfortable, the outside feels like soft wool, which is a relief from all the plasticy feeling jackets I've seen. The sleeves and neck have a snug-fitting cuff on the inside thats nice but a little snug at first, especially around the neck. The sleeves are average length, I would have liked them longer. Overall I'm happy with my purchase and I shared some links to your site on a vegan forum. I hope to see more vegan coats on your site and it would be great if you added vegan/synthetic coats to your searchable catagories!

Great Coat
November 10, 2010

I love this coat... I'm always cold - it keeps me warm, I ordered an extra small and was not sure if I needed a small. I am like 5'2 110 lbs and wear xs tops and size zero-size 2 pants. The zipper was a bit stubborn to start, but now is pretty good. Looks super cute too! I wear a snowball hat, gloves, and coat and am not too cold waiting for the bus - hits after butt. Perfect and adorable! I really am stoked it's water resistant - most pea coat like things are not! The sleeves have fittie things so the air doesn't go up your arms (unlike most pea coat like jackets)

Strange Sizing
December 22, 2010

One of the elements that attracted me to this parka was that while it is long enough to provide coverage from the cold, it also appears to have a tailored, feminine fit. Not necessarily the case. The coat is true to size through the chest, overall length, and the length of the sleeves. However, the "hips" of it are wider than expected. Also, the lower, almost skirt-like, portion of the coat is baggy and roomy, and thus, it made me look frumpy and much larger than I actually am. It is possible that I could have ordered an inappropriate size; I ordered an XL, as I generally wear shirts and sweaters of that size, plus I wanted to have enough room to be able to layer underneath the parka. I also considered exchanging for a Large, but I believe the bust would be too tight. For perspective, I am 5'9," I wear a pants size of about a 10-12 and have a 38DD bust. I believe this style would be more ideal for a woman with a pear or hour-glass figure that is more pronounced. I really wish it had worked for me though because this parka is functional as well as stylish. It's very warm, but not puffy. The sleeves and neckline are nicely insulated to keep the cold out, and the hood lies close to your head without being too small. Also, the material, in Espresso, has an almost wool-like appearance though it is actually made of water-resistant polyester.

Color and Size
February 11, 2012

I just received my parka in the mail today in "Cinder." I thought I was buying a brown jacket based on the website color but it is more of a gray/very cool brown (the leather patches holding on the toggles are brown). Lucky me I love gray too! I'm 22, 5'3 and 115 lbs. I ordered the small but am considering ordering the XS to try. For reference I have a small frame (32, 27, 37). The arm length is perfect on me but being on the shorter side I can see how they would be too short for anyone much taller. I can fit a hooded sweatshirt underneath it comfortably with room in the torso to spare. I can't attest to the functionality yet but I will say it feels a bit stiff. Somewhat like starched wool or something, maybe it will loosen up in time. Also the double zipper is a bit hard to start but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. Aesthetically it was just what I was looking for, something that could be dressed up or down and will hopefully keep out the Oregon rain on my way to class. Beautiful coat!

I live in New York and a packed train in the morning is nowhere a heavy bulky jacket. This jacket is light and very affective. It maintains your heat without the puffyness. It does run a little large. I would opt for a size down . Believe me adding more layers to compensation for the size is not a good idea. I am considering to purchase in a different color becuase it is sporty but looks great with my work clothes. Dress up and down is both acceptable. Although not to rain repellent it does a decent job of not absoribing any rain. Unless you decide to take a bath in it.

Pros: Fashionable, warm, well-made. Cons: Doesn't quite seem warm enough for really cold climates (aka places where the temp. often drops below 0) unless you are just running between one warm place and another. If I intended to use this to walk between buildings in the city or jump on the subway, I would keep it for sure! But as I intend to walk extended distances in snow in negative degree temperatures, I'm not sure this would hack it. So, back it goes. Le sigh. That said, the coat is really cute and seems to be well made. The fit is flattering for a cold weather coat, though if I were keeping it I might take another reviewer's advice and have it tailored for a slightly closer fit to make it that much more fabulous. Otherwise, true to size (S, 5'6" 130).

Warm and stylish
December 18, 2010

When I first tried on this coat out of the box I was a little disappointed how big it was at the hips. I ordered a medium, I am 5’4”, 124 lb, my measurements are 35.5-28.5-35. Perfect at chest and shoulders (with some room to feel comfortable when moving and driving) but way too wide at hips. I decided to take it to the tailor to have the waist and hips taken in and now it is so cute and so much flattering then before! I am sure the small would have been too tight at chest and shoulders and the overall length and length of the arms too short. I have narrow hips but even if they were a couple inch wider the coat would have been still be too big at hips. The quality of this parka is outstanding, it looks like wool but is like waterproof (my tailor said the same and she must know as an expert) did not expect less quality from Merrell, also love their shoes (got the Eden Peak boots and Prevoz boots, both go perfect with this coat). This coat is so warm, you won’t ever be cold in it, it just can be sometimes too warm, I sweat in it when I am inside of a mall. The hood is also a good size, I often have problems with hoods being in the way of my shoulder long curly hair, this one is perfect and offers good weather protection. The side pockets are a bit too low to put my hands in, so I put them into the snap pockets. I give this coat 4 stars for the fit issue (hips) but at the end after having taken it to the tailor I am completely happy with my purchase and I highly recommend it. It offers also a great value for the price (I own several coats from The North Face with comparable quality but they all have been more expensive). Happy!!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, Cons: to wide at hips

Short arms
February 03, 2011

I am a solid small, and occasionally an XS, but the sleeves on this were a bit too short, and combined with the ribbing at the cuffs, there was no way I would have been able to layer anything but a thin shirt under this jacket. The fabric was also stiffer than I had anticipated. The lining was nice and I could tell it would probably hold up okay in winter weather, but I was pretty disappointed in the sleeve fit and the fabric so I sent it back.

Comfortable and chic

I love my new Haven parka! I am a size 4 in most things, and the small fit like a dream. The sleeves are a good length also; I find that is one of the most aggravating things about buying size small in coats.... most coatmakers seem to think small people have short arms - not necessarily true! This coat is fitted in all the right spots while not sparing on utility - it is one of the warmest coats I've ever worn, period. I also love that it's a little bit long; that extra few inches really keeps the warmth in. This coat can be dressed up or down, which is one of the main reasons I bought it, and I'm not disappointed. I may have to buy another in another color. :)

Would have been nice

Unfortunately I ordered this coat in an x-small because that was the only size they had in the color I wanted (chocolate). I had a feeling it would be too small and it was. By the time I realized, it went to fast there were hardly any left. However, I did try it on and if it had fit I would have loved it! It was soooo warm, beautifully made, and so classy.

Bought this coat for my wife and she loves it. She was looking for something that would be able to take a beating (we have 2 toddlers and she is pregnant), still look great, be somewhat unique (she hates north face because everyone seems to have one), and very warm. She found all of that with this coat. To top it off its markedly cheaper than many others. The only bad thing she has to say about it is that the zipper is backwards...hardly a big deal. Would definitely recommend.

love the look, not the fit for a tall gal...

I had such high hopes for this jacket, as it is a great color (blue) and very cute, but also looks like it would stand up to an east coast winter. This coat may fit better for those who are smaller...I'm not small, my 6 foot frame, long arms and broader shoulders couldn't make this fit. I originally tried the medium, I'm 155 lbs, and didn't want it too roomy in the bottom; it was too tight in the arms, shoulders and chest, so sent back for the large...still too small, but then WAY too roomy in the bottom and waist. HMPH! Loved the look of this jacket and it was very warm, the outer material looked like it would take the wind and rain, and the inner was not bulky at all. The other part that bugged me was the collar when zipped all the way, it dug into my chin and felt constricting. Going to send this one back too and keep looking. Altrec has great customer service and it was no problem to send it back. Hope this helps
