While many waterproof trail running shoes emphasize weather protection, Montrail's Hurricane Ridge XCR takes comfort a step further with optimal breathability through a lightweight double-ply GORE-TEX® XCR lining. Above the lining you'll also find a special Stretch-Fit GTX® tongue that eliminates the pressure usually encountered by conventional folded gusset tongues. The dual density midsole features medial posting for pronation control--something you and possibly your orthopedic surgeon will appreciate after extended runs.
- Low-cut upper consisting of hydrophobic synthetic leather and mesh
- 3-bar knit GORE-TEX® XCR lining with Stretch GORE-TEX® for proper fit
- Rubber-coated leather toe cap with a thermoformed toe counter

These shoes were comfortable on my very first hike. No time needed to break them in for a 2 hour hike! And, they are truly waterproof, even after exposure to water for several hours.

Probably THE BEST shoe I have ever purchased. Superior traction, comfort, fit combined with great looks and DRY, dry, dry. The shoe lasted for about two years of constant use in yucky BC conditions.

Peter - 2004-11-18Not durable or just a bad batch?
The sole started coming off on my first pair after just a few days. I had them replaced and immediately run into the same problem. After returning the shoes, I bought another pair on sale at another vendor. The sole lasted a bit longer but still started to come off at the edges after a few weeks. More worrisome is the fact that after a few month, the upper mesh started to break at the areas where the material gets bent while walking. This is reinforced by the stiff plastic elements build around the upper and lower end of the upper material. This happened on right and left shoe and on both, inside and outside part in a very symmetrical pattern. It suggests bad design. After 1/2 year they look like they are 3 years old and are far from being water-proof even with Gore-Tex. I would not buy these shoes again. However, I must note that they were always very comfortable and that there was virtually no break-in period. That's what caused me to try them again at the beginning. Not anymore!
