My Favorite Trail Shoe
August 19, 2011
I'd been looking for a shoe that offered the same light weight as the NB101, but just a bit more padding and better traction, so that I could feel comfortable running fast on technical downhills. This is that shoe. For a shoe this light, the Rogue Racer has great padding. It's minimal, (or would have been considered so a couple of years ago), but not barefoot. There's enough in the heels to allow me to bomb the downhill (hard downhills end up requiring a heels strike). Traction is great on the hard, dusty, rocky So Cali mountain trails. The shoe also drains quickly, which is a plus if you run trails with frequent stream crossings. The toe box is roomy enough to allow my toes to spread out on those long runs, but the shoe is snug in the midfoot and heel, so there's no slipping. My only (minor) complaint is that there's a brief break-in period during which the bend in the upper forefoot presses into the toes; that goes away as soon as the fabric starts to soften. My longest run thus far in these has been a 37 miler. I love 'em.Pros: lightweight, good traction, minimal-ish, flexible, Cons: slight break-in period
Second pair of Rogue Racers
February 11, 2012
A few years ago I ventured into the minimalist shoe category to see if I would appreciate the difference. I found that I did prefer shoes on the lighter side but could never find the perfect combination of weight, support, and ride all in one model. That was until I decided to buy a pair of Rogue Racers from Montrail. The Rogue Racer is an extremely lightweight trail shoe and doesnt lack any quality that should be expected in a trail shoe. The upper is highly breathable providing adequate ventilation. The upper also is designed perfectly to keep the foot secure without using too much material as to compromise its lightweight quality. The midsole provides a great combination of support and flexability. I am a mid foot striker and the heel to toe drop is minimal, making the transition effortless. The integrated rocksheild has provided adequate protection from most any rock or root thatI have come into contact with. The outsole, in my opinion is perfect also. The three point micro lugs havent let me down yet on any surface. I often wear these shoes for track workouts as well. Other reviews I have read have described the outsole as lacking when it comes to running in sloppy mud but I think that goes for every non cleatlike trail shoe. I have actually been running in my first pair of Rogue Racers for about five months now. I liked these shoes so much and was afraid of not being able to find them anymore, I searched around for a killer deal, found it at Altrec.com and ordered a second pair. I will continue to buy this shoe as long as I can find it.
super light trail runner
December 19, 2011
The ratings out there on the internet were dead on. These shoes are exactly what I was looking for. They are really light, comfortable, and flexible. The material is soft and breathes. Although I was originally looking for something water resistant like gore-tex, I think that going that route would have added bulk and reduced comfort a bit. I have yet to fully test how rugged they will be on rough terrain and wet conditions, but on dirt trails with some rocky terrain, there were no problems. I did notice that they added a little extra cushion and spring to my strides while running. That's a plus.Pros: super light and comfortable, Cons: long shoe laces
My most comfortable trail shoes
September 12, 2012
I have owned a few pairs of trail shoes and most of them are well known brands. However I find it hard to come up with a perfect shoes that serves all my needs. And finally I have found Montrail Rogue Racer is my most favourite. When I got this shoes, I am very happy with it. It is a well made, very comfortable (need no break in), lightweight (250g.), and good ventilation. It has a modern design yet minimalist. The fabric is not a water resistant which otherwise would make it too costly. Outer sole is a patented full lengthed Gryptonite which provides good grip on all grounds. I would highly recommend this shoes for runners who crave for comfortable, lightweight and yet durable.Pros: well constructed lightweight breathable fabric
Great lightweight trail shoe

I am very happy with the Montrail Rogue Racer. For me it's a great lightweight training shoe and long distance (greater than 13mi) racing shoe. The toe box is generous to allow toes to spread and not confine them but the overlays are positioned just behind the metatarsal heads to firmly hold the foot on the platform with no slipping and sliding on technical trails. The outsole has great grip on slick trails but it's low profile allows a smooth ride on hardpack trails and even roads. Just a great all around neutral shoe.Pros: good outsole grip, good rock protection, great fit, low profile midsole
