Fit Tip: This jacket is semi-fitted. Item fits true to design, and has room for range of motion and comfort. The Chugach runs slighty longer in the torso than the Compressor PL and is heavier.

Mountain Hardwear Men's Chugach 3D Jacket

Synthetic insulation dries far faster and often remains more resilient especially if it's the soft, warm and lofty Polarguard® 3D found in this Chugach Jacket. Polarguard® 3D insulation features a continuous fiber filament that won't shift, clump or mat like other polyester and down fill. The overall weight of the jacket is comparable to other down-filled climbing and mountaineering jackets and it offers a similar internal and external pocket configuration. If you're headed for spaces and places with vacillating or unpredictable temperature changes, the Mountain Hardwear Chugach is a smart choice.

  • Nylon ripstop shell fabric
  • Polarguard® 3D insulation
  • Brushed polyester and polyester taffeta fabric lining
  • Power Stretch® material around cuffs help seal in warmth while sealing out water
  • Zippered fleece-lined handwarmer pockets
  • Interior zippered pocket
  • One-handed hem and lower back drawcords
  • Storage stuff sack included
  • Embroidered Mountain Hardwear logo on chest
  • Weight: 20 oz. (567 gm.) in medium sizes

Great Backpacking Jacket
I used this jacket on a month long expedition in Alaska's Talkeetna range. You could not ask for a more livable backcountry jacket. You can't beat the fleece cuffs!

favorite backpacking jacket
If your counting ounces and going backpacking the chugach jacket fills the bill. Compared to fleece or pile jackets it's so much warmer per ounce and compresses down in you pack better. only down is lighter. And for backpacking its the kind of jacket you can live in,very comfortable the pockets are high so you can warm your hands with your pack on, unlike other jackets. Also if this wasn't all true the chugach jacket wouldn't be on the market now for about 10 years now and have so many positive reviews. So if your going for a few weeks backpacking or just around town jacket the Chugach sets the bar.

Love Mountain Hardware Stuff
I own a MH High Tech Jacket and really enjoy wearing it in cool to moderately cold weather. When it rains I put a gore-tex shell over it. The Chugach 3D was purchased as a gift for my son-in-law, a policeman, because of the quality of the HT and he seems to like it as much as I like the HT. It is very light...when it arrived I thought it was a scarf I had ordered, but it is quite warm, but still good for those 50 degree days as well as those 30 degree nights. Buy MH if you want the best!

Thin and amazing
I just got this particular jacket, but I've owned severeal Mountain Hardwear items in the past ... they last forever, but I think this is my new favorite. I have an Exposure II parka from them that is 4 years old and still in one piece and still waterproof, a Windstopper vest that's 6 years old and just now ready to be retired, and a fleece jacket from them that I've worn so much in the past 5 years that it pains me to replace it. The only thing that's ever broken on any of them was the zipper on the fleece, after 5 years of constant use. I've been really impressed with the company over time. You get what you pay for, in this case. The insulation on this jacket is not thick, but when I put it on and walked around outside in 32 degree weather with a 15 m.p.h. wind, it stopped the wind completely and my upper body was very comfortable. It seems to breathe very well, as the heat feels like a dry and toasty heat rather than a humid clammy one (like the heavy winter coats you had a kid). I can't get over how light and warm this is ... I'll be wearing it every day this winter, I'm sure. The drawstring toggles at the bottom let you cinch it tight over your hips to trap air even better, and the lining is quite soft and comfortable on bare arms if you're wearing a t-shirt underneath. If it can keep me warm when it gets wet like the Polarguard 3D insulations says it can, I'll be very impressed. The entire jacket compresses down to the size of an undersized football, so it's easy to take with you everywhere you go.

A+ Jacket
I have had this jacket for 5 years now and use it almost every day between fall and spring. Whether it is 50 or 10 degrees it keeps you warm..plain and simple. Dampness not a problem....still keeps you warm. Not bulky. Very durable.

Brilliantly warm & light, tested it in Moscow.
So I'm from Houston. Not so used to the cold. I recently spent two weeks in Moscow during one of the coldest Russian winters on record. Standing in temperatures 20 to 30 degrees C below freezing, I was entirely comfortable with nothing more than a thermal beneath the jacket. Beyond its warmth, it's very light weight and compressability made it a great travel companion. I wouldn't have believed that something so thin and light could keep me so warm, but I also didn't expect that I would survive two weeks of Russian winter.

Very Impressed
Granted I just got the jacket today, but being 6'4 with monkey arms, I tend to get excited when I find a jacket that fits. The sleeves are even longer than other jackets that I own with "tall" man sizing. I think this is due in part to the stretchy fleece cuffs. I haven't warn it in cold weather yet, but I think it will be great. The quality is top notch. Warm but not to bulky! Also, you can't beat the price for a Mountain Hardwear Jacket. Pick it up before it's gone!

Kept me going!
I recently took this on an Alaska mountaineering trip and it worked great! It kept me warm on the coldest days, during snowstorms, and in windy conditions. Its light weight is also very nice for backpacking. Perfect for a pillow as well. Only good things to say about this jacket!

Service was great!
I would not hesitate to order again and again from Altrec.com. I bought the jacket for my husband who likes light weight, warm, windproof clothing and it appeared to fit the bill perfectly. Altrec's description of the jacket turned out to be absolutely true. This is not the first time that we have gotten perfect descritpions of items that we have ordered, as well as excellent service. I would recommend you to anyone. Thank you for everything.

Got to love this coat!
Got to love this coat! It is as comfortable as it is warm. A great 3 and a half season coat, given its wind protection, good for all but the coldest days. A light to boot. Can easily be layered under a heavy jacket for the dead of winter.

great jacket, especially for the northwest
I have had so many jacket including the fleeces with and without windstopper as well as hybrids. It alsways seemed that there was something about the jackets that just didn't work for me or could really be improved for what I needed it for. This is a great jacket for northwest winters. It is comfortable, light, seems durable and gives just the right amount of protection from the northwest winter drizzle. It is not bulky and can be worn under a shell on really cold and wet days though I haven't had to do this yet. It can be a bit warm but that is what I bought it for. It doesn't seem to be too warm like many of the fluffy down jackets that are so popular. I really like this jacket. Altrec was great too. Very fast, great price and wonderful return policy. I would definitely buy from them again!

Very happy consumer. The folks at Altrec are very helpful and courteous, a breath of fresh air from doing business at other places. The jacket is very light in weight but very warm for it's size. A good looking jacket. I'am very happy with the jacket. I particularly enjoy how the jacket can be rolled in such a small size taking very little packing room away.

Lightweight warmth at a great price!
This has been a fairly cold winter for southwestern Ohio, but it has been made much more bareable with this jacket. Lightweight , completely packable and totally comfortable, this garment was a great purchase. I especially like the fleece cuffs and the handwarmer pockets; both very nice touches.

Hit the Gift Jackpot
I bought this jacket online as a Christmas "panic" purchase because another online gift (from another source) had yet to show up. The priority shipping was downright cheap (another source wanted three times Altrec's shipping fee). And, most importantly, this is my husband's favorite winter jacket. He wears it all the time, not just for (cold weather) cycling. Now, I want one too.. maybe next Christmas.

Great Jacket
Light and sturdy. Warm by itself, but thin enough to layer under a shell. I decided on the Chugach instead of a down jacket for warmth without the extra puffiness, and I'm happy with the purchase.

Leave down behind
I was waiting to buy a down jacket to keep warm during less strenous activities, but living in Ga. I was worried about getting wett. A buddy I know just hiked the A.T. this year and recomended this jacket. I figure that was a good test and bought one. I was impressed with the warmth and its less bulky than most jackets I tried, but most importantly it insulates when wett. I highly recomend it.

Down comfort without the bulk
Great coat! While everyone else is "flemming" it around in the other brands down coats, the Chugach 3D Jacket stands out. Serious warmth from synthetic fill that doesn't make you look like you were just inflated. Mountain Hardwear is for the true outdoor individualist, soccer moms in line for latte' need not apply.

Warm, light, packable, good fit.
I carry the Chugach jacket as survival gear on backcountry ski trips. It's light, warm, and fits in a relatively small stuff sack. I put it on to stay warm during lunch breaks on cold or cloudy days. It's also good for casual wear on cold nights.

fantastic!
I am very happy with this coat! I had been looking for an alternative to down, and had found nothing that felt equally as warm until now. I highly recommend this jacket to others. I just returned from a cross country ski adventure in sub- zero temperatures (with wind chill), and this coat, with layers underneath, provided great warmth and wind resistance. A great coat and great delivery and service.

Great Value
I have had this jacket for over an year now and I think that this is a fantastic value for a synthetic. No cold spots even though it seems to a sewn thru construction. The front pockets are nicely placed for easy access. Useful drawcords everywhere. Quite warm. Now for the nitpicking downsides..there is no cinch cord on the collar. I would have preferred a smoother lining to slide over a fleece or wool sweater. The Polarguard 3D insulation seems to have lost some of it's loft after being stranded in a rainstorm. I do not like the cuffs, they interfere with my liner gloves. I have the smoky blue ...would have loved a red. Note that it runs a little big.

Happy with my purchase
I can't complain about the Chugach 3D Jacket. It arrived two days before a winter storm dumped 6 inches of snow and ice in central Ohio. It kept me warm and dry while I was walking the dog. I became uncomfortably hot while shoveling snow in it. The first jacket that I ordered was too big (the sizing chart is accurate). I returned it and the return process was hassle free. My new coat arrived three days later. Thanks Altrec.

Met all expectations
Just used this very light and comfortable jacket while on vacation in North carolina. The weatrher went from mildly cold and wet to freezing and snowy and the jacket performed very well in all conditions. Used with the proper mid layer (determined by the weather and common sense)this jacket will not let you down. I love the feel, fit and drape. I chose to wear it instead of my $350 shell for the entire trip. A collar draw cord would have made it perfect but at this price I can't really complain.

Very nice and light jacket
I am enjoying this jacket very much. I like the way it fits, and so far it is plenty warm, but not too warm to where I need to shed it when indoors (shopping etc.). It's super light, which makes it very comfortable (I hardly feel it when it's on).

Awesome all round jacket!
The best thing about this jacket is the snot wipers! Jacket has 2 inch stretchy fleece cuffs at the wrists instead of the usual elastic. Not only is this more comfortable and draft proof, but also practical. Snot! Not to be gross, but that's what they're there for! Mountain Hardware built this jacket for people who play hard. I'm still trying to wear out my first Chugach (5 years old), and bought a new one for "cleaner" endeavors. I fish the Northeast for Stripers and Blcakfish in the fall and and winter. This jacket is indespensible for keeping me warm when I get wet. I also camp and backpack. The jacket stuffs into an included stuff sack about the size fo a grapefruit. The draw pull around the back is great for keeping in the heat and conforming the jacket to your body. I looked around and couldn't find anything comparable in fit or quality. The only thing this jacket lacks is pit zips which would be nice, and maybe a drawstring for the neck. The arms are also nice and long, so if you're tall, this is your jacket! You won't be disapointed.

Warm light jacket perfect for bkpking & canoeing
I bought this jacket for canoeing, backpacking and sailing. In all 3 I needed a warm, light jacket that could face the wind, get wet and dry quickly while keeping me warm with minimal bulk. I also wanted something that would pack small and the Chugach does this with its own small stuff bag. It sizing is probably truer than most and is very form fitting which was different than most of my other jackets where they tend to be on the larger size to allow extra bulk inside. I am a 44 shoulder and the large just fit with a sweatshirt or sweater inside. Finally the service from Altrec was outstanding. All in all this was a great purchase I am expecting to get years of good use from. Highly rated.

What a super warm jacket for I can wear a tee-shirt under this one & still stay toasty. I own a lot of mountain Hardware & North Face jackets, but I usually reach for this one first on a cold day. Inexpensive Warmth
By far one of my favorite purchases this winter. It is the warmest jacket I have ever owned, and considering how cold it has been in New England this winter, I wear it every day. A few weeks ago I was even able to test it on a hike down to -20 deg up in New Hampshire, and while I am not going to say I was toasty warm, I was by no means cold. Really good to layer with the Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man jacket.

Solid performer
After being a die hard fan of the sub-zero parka I didn't think I would ever want another insulated jacket, I was wrong. During a recent trip on Mt. Olympus in Washington I found a new love for synthetic insulation. A friend lent me his jacket in anticipation of wet weather, and it paid off. It kept me warm during cold and wet days and even cooler nights. This jacket gives me options when it comes to an upper body insulating layer!

My second review on this jacket
After using the jacket for a couple months, I find the workmanship to be rather lacking. The insulation is constantly coming out from the seams. While I still like the jacket, it still bothers me aesthetically.
