Description

Designed for Alpine adventurers, the Mountain Hardwear Men's Compressor Jacket has a superior warmth-to-weight ratio and is, as its name implies, highly compressible. Made from lightweight 20D nylon ripstop fabric, this water-resistant mountain jacket uses Thermic Micro™ synthetic insulation to keep you toasty warm. The underarm side panels are thinner to reduce bulk and aid ventilation where you need it. This coat is perfect as a warm layer on an ultralight backpacking trip in the Kings Canyon backcountry or as a mid layer under a waterproof winter jacket on a telemark ski tour of the Eastern Sierras. Elastic cuffs and drawcords at the neck and waist help seal in body heat and the Micro-Chamois™-lined chin guard gives you something soft to burrow down into when the temperatures drop. They lined the 2 front zippered pockets with fleece because even ultralighters like a warm, fuzzy place to tuck their cold hands. Offered in classic colors that will get an appreciative nod from gear heads and girlfriends everywhere, the Mountain Hardwear Compressor Jacket for men is a lightweight favorite for unrestricted versatility at high elevations.

Great Jacket
February 19, 2012

This is a great looking jacket. Keeps you warm without the bulk and really moves well with you. Great as a layering piece, but if you've got a small frame or looking for an 'athletic fit', look elsewhere. The jacket is a bit boxy in the middle.

Pros: Great design, Cons: boxy fit

Very warm and light
February 10, 2008

Fits great not too bulky not too tight. Keeps you nice and warm. Handwarmer pockets are great as is the fleece areas on the neck.

Mens Small Fits Really Small
May 06, 2011

I bought this for my skinny 14-year-old son, 5'7", 120lbs, and it's way too tight with a medium-weight fleece layer underneath. The arms and waist are pretty short, too. I am disappointed because the size chart indicated a lot more room in the chest. My son is only about 30" around so it should have accommodated a fleece layer, or so I thought. Anyway, it looks like a great jacket and the reviews from experienced hikers are A+++ I'm going to exchange it for a Medium.

Pros: Great design, Performance

High value
February 03, 2008

This lightweight jacket is incredibly warm and I wish I had it down in southern Chile a few weeks ago. I wear it all the time. Its durable and not too bulky. One of my best purchases.

Good for everyday wear.
February 18, 2008

I've worn this jacket for almost two seasons, and love it. It's extremely light, and feels like wearing a primaloft sleeping bag. Very basic, but sturdy. The cinch-neck has come in handy, but a hood would be better. I wear it as my only winter jacket in Minnesota, and am fine.

Great Jacket
February 01, 2012

I use this jacket for hiking and hunting and it works perfect for both. The jacket is not real heavy but insulates very well and does not have a lot of bulk which allows for a good range of motion. This is another quality product by Mountain Hardware.

Pros: Build quality, Performance

Warm, lightweight jacket
December 20, 2009

This is a very warm but lightweight jacket. It is "fitted" to eliminate excess space around your body that you would have to heat. When it gets really cold I put a Gortex over it and stay toasty warm. Down would be a little warmer but it requires some care to keep it clean and DRY. Plus if a down jacket gets a snag the down pours out. I highly recommend this jacket.

Light weight and warm. Love it.

excellent jacket
January 24, 2011

Jacket is extremely light and warm. I haven't worn it in rain or snow, so I can't comment on water resistance. Fit is tight, expecially in the shoulders. I usually wear a medium in similar jeckets, including other Mountain Hardwear jackets. However, a large Compressor PL fits perfectly. And it looks great.

Top Quality Jacket
November 23, 2010

This is a great comfy jacket that is so light and flexible you really forget you have it on. It's wamer than it looks like it would be and good in the wind too. The only thing you have to be careful about is the light weight outter fabric that is not as durable as most shells are, it's more like a sweater and sharp things will snag it.

My all-time favorite
March 14, 2013

I had the previous version of the compressor. I loved it so much I wore it out in three seasons. It was still in good shape, but had too much stain. It went with me on every camping trip, fishing and rafting expedition. It kept me warm. Combined with a good waterproof shell and under-layer garment, I can survive any harsh weather condition. I love the new updated version. Love the color and extra durable fabric. Not as light and fluffy as the previous version, but it still is extreme light and versatile. I tried Patagonia Nano Puff before getting another compressor. Compressor won me over completely. I wear it literally four season here in SF Bay Area.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance

Extremely warm and very low pack volume
September 25, 2009

I have used this jacket extensively from cold weather sailboat racing to winter sports. It's great under a shell. It feels like you're wearing a thin shirt but with the warmth of a down jacket. Get one.

Sizing is Small
February 05, 2008

I normally wear a med with almost all manufacturers, including mtn hdwr. This jacket is much smaller than my other mh outerwear. I recommend ordering 1 size larger than your usual. Thx to altrec for their easy returns.

I love this jacket
January 02, 2010

My Dad bought last years model and told me to hold it. I was hooked. It was so light I couldn't believe it. I had to have one so I did some investigating and found it on here for a great price. I recieved mine today. I was worried because I read they run small. I wear XXL and it fits right for an athletic cut. I love it and can't wait to hit the town in it. Also shipping was super fast!!!

Great Jacket
March 05, 2012

I want to congratulate Altrec on great customer service and lightening fast shipping! As to the Mountain Hard Wear Compressor Jacket, it looks great, fits correctly (not too large or too small - just right) and is warm without being oppressively warm inside. The quality of the build is evident out of the box. I can not say enough great things about Altrec and this jacket. Thank you!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

2 thumbs up
February 20, 2008

very light and warm given its weight. takes up small packing space for travel. looks stylish. very happy with my purchase.

This is a great mid-layer jacket
February 24, 2008

This is a great stand-alone jacket or you can use it under a shell. I bought it to go with my Arcteryx Stingray and Cloudveil Koven Plus soft shells. Since it is very compressible, it is not bulky at all under the shell. This jacket is very comfortable to wear and provides good warmth. I bought it from Altrec as they gave me a good deal and free shipping didn't hurt.

Nice Thin
December 23, 2009

I bought it for my 21 year old son. It is a very nice jacket to own. But he said, "too shinny" The quality is quite good, as is the sizing which seems pretty true. So, he kept it since it was a gift. He would prefer "North Face"

Great Layer
March 24, 2010

This jacket is fantastic and is the missing link to my layering system. With a merino wool base layer underneath, MH windstopper vest over, and waterproof shell on top, I'm set. I can easily adjust to weather conditions and pack light. The new MH Typhoon jackets are also sweet. Head for the mountains!

Small, lightweight warmth
April 06, 2010

I've used this jacket for several months and am delighted with how it performs. It's far lighter than fleece, packs smaller - comparable to down - and provides great warmth. Down would still be better for the middle of the winter, but this jacket is far better for every other season. I haven't tested it after a complete soaking, but it will definitely be warmer than down if it got wet. My only complaint is a strange tie-down neck strap that gets in way at the back of your head, but this is easily removed.

Great all-around winter jacket
January 29, 2009

I bought these to use as insulating layer for outdoors, and ended up using them almost everyday. Light and warm and pretty stylish too, not puffy at all. The chin guard on the collar is really nice. They don't really breathe so I had to take them off when snowshoeing to prevent overheating. But that's not a fault for this type of garment. My only concern is with the fabric, its so thin I'm afraid to rip it on something I bump into, like doorways, but so far it stood up well.

Great fitting in the MH tradition.
February 13, 2009

Love this jacket, great by itself on hikes or snowshoeing. Great layered under a shell for really cold days snowboarding. Just a great overall jacket.

Wonderful
January 04, 2009

It's absolutely true-this jacket is excellent. It's extremely warm: to try this out when it first arrived, I went for a 30 minute walk in 5 degree, low winds weather with just a long sleeve t-shirt underneath, and was very comfortable. Also used it with a shell on a 30 degree snowy day snowshoeing and again felt great. I've pretty much worn it every day since it arrived, in a variety of conditions and in a variety of temperatures and have been completely comfortable. While I love my down jacket, this is so much less cumbersome yet equally as warm. Lastly, Altrec's pre-holiday sale gave a great great price on the jacket, and the shipping was free and pretty fast.

Excellent light weight option to fleece. Warm and water resistant. A great every day jacket. Good fit. Ordered xxl for 6'5", body loose but sleeve length is great . Xl was a bit snug and sleeves a little short.

August 22, 2008

Lightwieght and very warm. Easy to travel with.

Awesome jacket. Very high warmth to weight ratio!
January 21, 2009

I was looking for an insulated jacket that wouldn't be puffy but would still be warm. After receiving it and seeing how thin it actually was, I was a little skeptical. As soon as you put it on and zip it up, though, you can feel your body heat getting trapped and you begin to feel the warmth right away. I tested this over a t-shirt in 15-20 degree weather as soon as I got it and was not cold at all. Amazing warmth to weight ratio! Thought it would be just a good base layer but now I know it can easily stand alone in very cold weather. Primaloft One is one of the best synthetics I've ever seen.

August 21, 2011

I wear this jacket as an insulation layer under my Mountain Hardware Wind Stopper Fleece Jacket for temps down to 30F. I also were this jacket in Albuquerque, NM as a winter jacket on the sunny days when no Rain/snow is forecast. Very warm, packs up incredibly small and durability is good for a nylon shell. I also pack this jacket for hiking and self support whitewater kayak trips.

Awesome Jacket!
November 06, 2010

Bought this jacket last fall as my primary winter jacket for around the town use, and I certainly wasn't disappointed! The Compressor provides great warmth for a jacket that is so light and form fitting, plus it keeps you warm even after it gets wet. Another plus is that the Primaloft liner is in sheets which do not require baffles, which means fewer seams and less wind penetration. This jacket is great with no more than a t-shirt underneath for temperatures down to about 35 degrees, and it is perfect for any temperature with proper layering. I use it as a midlayer underneath the Mountain Hardwear Mercurial soft-shell jacket on particularly cold, wet, or windy days. My only concern with the jacket is the shell material is indeed ultralight, and therefore it is relatively thin and it seems as though it could tear relatively easily if it were snagged on a branch or something or the sort. Overall, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Cons: durability

Great around town jacket very light, but warm.
February 12, 2008

Also good used for layering when it gets really cold.

Excellent jacket
June 29, 2008

This is a great jacket. It is a must have for backpackers. It is light and very warm for the weight and fits into a pack easily. Have used it in moderately cold temperatures with just a base layer. Looks are also fantastic.

Perfect for cold weather
December 15, 2009

Nice jacket on its own or as a liner. I returned it because of the shiny coating and color (08 model). Nothing wrong with it by any means and the quality is quite good, as is the sizing which seems pretty true. Can't beat the folks at Altrec either. Very good people to work with too.

Great Coat
November 11, 2011

This purchase was for my youngest son who only wore hoodies last winter. It is light enough that he will wear it. Kids today dont want bulky outer jackets. The men's small fits him great. In shopping for him I discovered that Mountain Hardware fits best in men's small. Other brands assume you have a big gut but MH assumes youre lean/trim.

Nice Jacket
January 08, 2012

I bought a large and at 6' and 178# it is a good fit. The jacket is a trim fit and does not have excessive bulkiness. There is sufficient room for adding layers beneath. Someone who is stockier may want to try the jacket on to make sure it will fit properly. It fits under my rain shell very well too. Have not yet used it on a snow trip, just walking the dog several miles in Puget Sound 40 degree weather. The jacket felt comfortable temperature-wise. The fabric does not make much sound and definitely not a big "swooshing" sound. I'll update once I use it in more severe conditions.

Pros: Great design

small fit
February 24, 2008

Lighter but the fit is smaller than my old Chugach jacket which was the perfect size XL. Too thight specially around the shoulder and arm , uncomfortable for me to wear. I will have to return this one.

Great Jacket!
June 12, 2010

Bought this because my father-in-law, a backpacking outfitter in the Northwest, has had one for years that he loves. I wore it around the last time I was out to visit, so I knew a I knew it would fit and perform well.

Nice jacket, very warm and light!
October 24, 2006

As a personal trainer who is very active in outdoor fitness I was looking for a light weight and warm jacket that could get damp and still retain warmth. Also importnat is the ability compress the jacket for storage when the body produces metabolic heat. It's easy to store in a fanny pack or tie around the waist. For around town wear, it's also a good choice as it is warm and light. Great product!

Sooooooooo comfortable
February 16, 2008

I accidently received a men's small instead of a women's small - but the jacket is so lightweight and comfortable I couldn't return it. I bought it to use as a cold weather layer for skiing, but I'm wearing it all the time. The only problem is that it's a little bit noisy ... it crinkles a lot.

Remarkably Warm
September 18, 2011

I love this jacket. This is the second PL Compressor jacket I've purchased and not because the other one is worn out. I've worn my first one so much my wife begged me to get another one, in another color, so that I would have a backup or so it could get cleaned. It is so surprisingly warm for how incredibly thin and light it is.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use

Perfect Fit for the Athlete
December 17, 2009

True to size and high quality Mountain Hardware gear.

Excellent warm light jacket
February 18, 2010

This is an excellent warm, lightweight jacket. This is the 3rd of these we have bought between 2 of us. We wear them all year long fishing and skiing. I take this with me whenever I travel because it compresses so well it fits easily in my full suitcase. The shiny coating wears off over time. You want this to fit close to your body so pick your size with that in mind. I would usually wear women's medium in most clothes and a small if I want something tighter fitting. I have this in a small and it's perfect. Same sizing works in the men's sizes. 5 stars!
