Fantastic casual warm coat
February 18, 2011
This is a fabulous 1-solution coat for frigid weather, and the only downside is that it is somewhat heavy and bulky. It is completely water and weatherproof. It has plenty of pockets, and for the warmth it gives, you don't end up looking too much like a Michelin man. I'd rather custom-tailor my needs with a separate technical shell and insulation layer, and since I have so much gear, I ended up passing down my Downtown coat after using it intermittently for about three years. It's not a technical piece of gear. It is more of a street-wear casual coat. But if you're in sub-freezing weather on a regular basis and just want to throw something on quickly that will protect you, you can't go wrong.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value
February 18, 2011
I buy this down jacket 3 years ago. It is awesome. Now I buy a new one from altrec.com. It is very warm, windproof, and water resistant. It's also not as bulky as other down jackets. I would not recommend this coat above freezing temperatures. I like this down jacket.
It's a real buy at that price.
March 05, 2011
The downtown Coat is so warm, and it's fits me very well. Great coat for around town... Keeps you warm and dry. Down that does NOT make you look like the Michelin tire guy. It's a little longer also... Hard to find this type of jacket in this length. Would have liked a few more pockets but aside from that, it's great.Pros: Great design, Performance, Ease of use, Great value
very good and warm jacket
October 02, 2012
this is a very good and warm jacket, it fits just fine. This jacket does live up to its name. lots of pockets, looks refined and keeps wind out. Thanks
Looks cool and keep you warm
December 18, 2011
I'm living in Michigan and need really a warm but not bulky jacket. This one is it. Only the reason why I had to return it is little tight for me especially its armhole was small for me. If you are slim or not well built this is the one you may love during the cold winter.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use
Very warm coat without all the puff
December 14, 2011
A very warm coat without the usual puffy look of other down jackets. I am not experiencing the lack of insulation in the arms that others are reporting. Went with a Medium for my 5'10" 155lbs frame and have enough room underneath to layer if it ever gets cold enough here to need it along with the coat. I do wish it had one more pocket beyond the four it does have (two hand warmer, one small outside chest, one inside). Definitely glad I finally got off the fence and ordered it. As always Altrec delivered it quickly for free.Pros: Great design, Build quality
December 05, 2010
Got this coat to replace a 10 year old jacket. It's warmer and fits better than the other jacket ever did. I wear this jacket everywhere and while doing a wide variety of activities including snowshoeing, shoveling snow and taking the dog for a walk. I am 6'1", 200lbs. and decided to get the XL. It may be a tad long for some but I like how it fits. I usually have problems with the arm length of clothes but the XL fits perfectly. The jacket is a bit bulky to wear when driving due to being down filled but you will get used to that. The quality and construction far surpassed my expectations and is up to par with North Face and Columbia brands. I've never been cold while wearing this jacket in temps as low as 0 degrees F. This won't meet your needs if your looking to go much below that as it's not designed for such use. If your looking for a good quality jacket for around the town and a few other activities this jacket is your you.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Great value
Bomb proof urban parka
March 03, 2012
If you're looking for a coat that you can put on and not even worry about checking the temperature outside, this is for you. It's a longer length and extremely well insulated without looking too bulky. Almost too hot if you have to do a lot of walking but for low aerobic, urban pursuits this one fits the bill.Pros: Great design, Build quality
February 07, 2012
I bought this jacket to combine off the mtn style with on the mtn performance. I just took it to Chamonix, Fr and it held up solid in both instances. I was incredibly warm on the mtn with just a base layer in single digit temps. I'm 6'5", slim build, and the Large is a perfect fit in both length and chest. Couldn't be happier with this purchase.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value
Great jacket from a great company.
April 11, 2011
I have purchased a lot of Mountain Hardware gear, from tents and backpacks to clothing and I am never disappointed in their quality or performance. The Downtown coat is no different, you can feel the quality from the moment you put it on and the warmth shortly there after. I purchased this coat for a winter trip to Colorado and I was impressed on how warm it was, almost too warm. The jacket is a little large in fit, but that is the only "downside" and considering I am 175lbs at 6'3" it could explain why. The quality and design is outstanding, the jacket zippers are easy to use, the hood does not get in your way when not in use and when you completely close up the jacket you are still comfortable and free to move as needed. I highly recommend this jacket if you are somewhere cold and wet.Pros: Great design, Build quality
They have the wrong product pictured
November 14, 2010
I ordered this jacket 2 weeks ago. While the jacket is very nice, ALTREC does not send the jacket pictured. Rather they send you another version with a large logo on the upper chest. I'm not going to shop with this site again.
worth all the research
March 16, 2011
I researched online websites for two months looking to replace my 25-year old Lands End Gore-Tex down parka (which really had nothing functionally wrong with it, I just got tired of its bright blue color and balky zipper). Initially, I bought a medium, and it was just a hair too small. I'm 6'0" about 155 lbs, and while it fit the sleeves well, it was just a little too snug despite the fact that I'm pretty skinny. When I called to arrange an exchange for a size large, the rep said that if I'd talked to him first, he would have told me that the coat has an "athletic fit" and recommended a Large. I like the coat. It is really airtight, and traps in the body heat. I live in Chicago, and while I got the coat after the worst of the winter had passed, I wore the coat with a sweater on mornings when the temp was in the teens, and felt no discomfort at all. I expect it'll keep me warm on the coldest days.Pros: Build quality, Performance
Great winter coat
January 07, 2011
I was deciding between this and the Lacerta coat, also from Mountain Hardwear. What sold me on this coat are the slightly longer length and the pocket placement. While you do get fewer pockets with the Downtown coat, the hand warmer pockets are really in the perfect place, and you can fit stuff in there along with your hands. With an additional layer like a sweater or light fleece pullover, I've been very toasty in this jacket so far. I will agree with others that the sleeves are a little long, but that just keeps more of you protected from the cold. The cuffs could benefit from a snap or a velcro tightener, but I do like how the sleeves have a separate opening (like on a sweater) so cold and wind stays out. I would highly recommend this coat!Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value
Say yes to this coat!
October 19, 2010
Bought it for my 20 year old son who is away at school in northeast, where it is wet and freezing cold most of the winter. At first he was iffy about the longer length, it covers the bum, but then he decided it looked great and would be super warm. He was right on both counts! btw, the hood is removable. a key selling point.
December 09, 2010
great jacket, very warm, i would highly recommend, very durable, great for dog walking in northeastPros: warm
Warmth and comfort for a good price
February 27, 2011
I got black one with logo on upperleft chest, which I think it is the older model. Been wearing it for a week now and I must say I love it. I am 144lb, 5'7", and I got S size that fits well. This jacket replaces my wool coat and a hoodie that I always wear to walk to school. It works well on rainy days and windy days too. I have not tried it to do snowsports with it yet so I can't really say about the durability. But from the look of its quality, it should be fine. Care instruction is pretty simple and clear. Simple machine wash and spray on DWR care product is all you need!Pros: Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, Cons: dust magnet
Good Winter Coat
February 22, 2011
Was sick of being chilled to the bone in the Minnesota winters with only my thin snowboarding shell and windproof fleece combo for protection, so I finally broke down and bought a good quality down coat. I planned to mainly use this for commuting to work and clearing snow at our house. So far I have tested this thing in 2 snowstorms in Minnesota and it performed like a champ. The fit is a tiny bit snug but in my mind that helps trap the body heat in (I am 5'-10", 160lb, purchased size M). When I bend over to tie my shoes/boots with the coat fully zipped, the bottom zipper actually moves up a little given the longer length of the coat...but for me this is not a deal breaker. The detachable down filled hood is a bonus as well when the wind picks up or the snow starts flying sideways. The down insulation is very adequate. As an example I was shoveling and snowblowing our property out from a recent 16" snowfall which meant multiple trips outside over a 3 day span. When the temps were in the 20-30 range, the coat actually felt a little too warm with the moderate activity of shoveling for 2 hours. But when I was outside and the temps were in the 0-20 range, this coat was perfect. So I think it really depends on your outdoor activity level and temperature range at the time. Probably won't use this coat when I go snowboarding, unless it is frigid outside...otherwise it could be too warm. Enough pockets and in good locations. My cellphone fits nicely in the upper left exterior chest pocket, my wallet fits in the right interior chest pocket, and fleece lined exterior pockets help keep my hands warm. Don't use the MP3 pocket yet, but it will be nice to have. All in all a good quality down coat at a value price point considering the competition (North Face, Patagonia, etc).Pros: Build quality, Performance, Great value
great allround coat
November 24, 2011
Commute to work in Minnesota, this coat gives the warmth for bike rides in MN winter, subzero, plenty warm also when walking. Maybe not quite what you need when you go winter mountaineering, but anything else, this will be plenty warm. Good length also for work environment. Some of the inner pockets could be larger, pockets for hands have good size though. Hood fits well without obstructing view. Only downside, had to discover that 3 colleagues were wearing the same coat...
Husband loves it!
December 29, 2011
I ordered this for my husband for his birthday and now that the cold weather is here, he absolutely loves it. It's extremely warm, very well made and many of his male friends compliment him on his coat. Highly recommned!Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever
This is a very cool jacket
April 07, 2012
After receipt of this jacket, I'll do a little test, test the water resistance, the result is very satisfied with its waterproof performance to be better than my previous down jacket. My wife also said that the size is just cool.I like it, my brother like he want to buy one.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

Great jacket, warm and not too bulky
February 17, 2008
Fits great ,light weight, heighly packable. Kept me warm and dry. Highly rcommend to anyone who needs a stylish jacket for handling the cold and wet weather.
September 26, 2007
Warm and comfy. The fabric feels more sturdy than on the lighter sub zero line. Teddy fleece lining is comfy
February 21, 2007
The MHW Downtown Jacket is my first down jacket, but it has performed marvelously. It's a toasty experience (stranded on local highway at -5F for 2hrs). The jacket is pretty windproof to my testing (25mph sustained winds). The fit leaves some room for a mid-weight fleece or sweater (I layer the MHW Windstopper Tech Jacket; I wear a 42R suitcoat). The Velcro cuffs and the hems (one at bottom, another 6" above) help abate the cold and wind. And the only minor complaint is a few feathers poke through the exterior--not enough to cause problems but is still a minor concern.

YOU LITTLE BEWDY!!
August 12, 2009
Have been looking for a coat/jacket with,, 1)a decent backlength as a lot of jackets barely cover your rear 2) with plenty of warmth, NOTHING CAN BEAT DOWN FOR WARMTH 3)without the michelen man look, as been said many times I dont think calling this the (downtown) coat is really doing it justice. Makes it sound like its only good for walking across the street. Nothing could be further from the truth!! It's an outdoorsman's classic, great for the ski fields, the hunting camp,(where I've been using it} and snazzy enough to wear downtown for a latte with the chardonnay set!!
Going Downtown Is GREAT!
January 03, 2007
I really loved the feel and look of this jacket. Unlike the other 650 fill down jackets, it wasn't as "poofed" out, and had a much leaner look, with the same amount of warmth. The pimp chimp fleece inside was also a nice touch. Very light weight and nice to wear downtown, or on a winter hike. Very happy with it. The only thing I would want differently would be a hood.
great coat for winter
April 19, 2010
I use the coat in Moscow. It does great job; nice look, keeps me warm even when the temperature is - 20 C, really wind and water proof. Good price. When I am in subway, I am not too warm like I was in Canada Goose. I recommend this coat for northern winters.
Overall, a good warm, not bulky coat
January 28, 2009
I got a sz M. I'm about 5'7", 165 lbs. I know that I've read that the fitting in the armpits is a little weird/tight which is true, but I can live with it. When I zip up, the bottom fit is a little tight, but not sure if it's due to the design of this coat - slim design? So, I don't know if a sz M is the right fit for me though? b/c also when I zip it up all the way, the neck is kinda tight. I think my neck size is about 16. I may exchange this out for a sz L, but not sure yet. But overall, I'd say that this coat is warm and not bulky at all.
Perfect for freezing weather
February 15, 2008
Before purchasing this jacket I ordered some less expensive down jackets from Lands' End and Cabela's, both with 650 fill power. I was looking for something very warm because I walk to work at 6 a.m. every day (about a 15 minute walk). Some days are well below zero and I can't really wear base layers or I roast at work all day. This jacket far outperformed the other jackets in warmth, style, and weather resistance. The extra length adds a surprising amount of comfort. I highly recommend this jacket to anyone needing to stay warm in bitter cold weather.
January 19, 2010
Husband loved the coat; great quality. He's tall (210 lbs; 6'3") and the XL fit him well - sleeve length long enough; liked the warmth; it's not one of those coats that is too bulky; more tailored; overall nice fit.
Excellent winter jacket
January 06, 2011
This jacket is really warm, has a good quality feel to it and isn't baggy as some, which traps the warmth nicely. The tighter collar when fully zipped up makes it great if you don't want to wear a scarf. A great, tough winter companion.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Great value

Warm down coat without bulk
December 20, 2008
I'm 6'3" 190 lbs and was worried about L vs. XL. I ordered the large and was very happy. Sleeve length and body are perfect. This coat lives up to the Mountain Hardwear reputation. It is quite warm.
Great Fit, Plenty of Warmth
January 31, 2008
This is a great jacket for wearing around town on more cold or inclement days. The insulation is the perfect balance between not being too puffy, but still providing plenty of insulation to just throw over a light shirt and be plenty warm
March 24, 2011
I travel a lot for work, and was looking for a warm coat for travel in Chicago, Minnesota, and Colorado. I found it. Nothing beats down for warmth vs weight, and this jacket is no exception. Very warm, very comfortable, and, as with all MH products, very thoughtfully crafted, and well made. I'm never disappointed with MH products. I was initially concerned about the reviews concerning fit, being hurried in air travel is enough of a hassle without freedom of movement. I'm 6'0, about 195, wear a 42/44 sportcoat, and this fits very well, and comes down far enough not only for extra warmth, but also more appropriate appearance with a suit (read: you can wear a suit coat under it). Tried it out in sub-zero temps in Minneapolis several weeks ago, and was completely warm, no complaints. Save one... I bought this because the outside shell is smooth, and is dense/tough enough to keep the more ambitious, and curious feathers from poking through - that was a must for me. Because it's so dry and cold in the West in the Winter, the static, which is bad no matter what kind of jacket you slip on, has this jacket gathering more dust and other fibers than other coats I have. Not enough to to detract from purchase, I assure you, a damp cloth (not paper towel) is an easy, quick fix. In a word, thrilled. One thing that wasn't clear to me was the hood, which is also very warm, in that it IS detachable.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance
Look no further, buy this coat
January 05, 2011
After countless hours of scouring the internet and talking to sales reps, I finally settled on this coat - and thank god I did. If you're looking for a down coat that's water/wind proof, long enough to cover your backside (and front) and doesn't make you look like a marshmallow, this is the one for you. Those are all features that no matter how hard I searched I couldn't find in one coat. Don't be fooled, if you go synthetic or you go thin, you're not going to get the warmth that you need. I bought and returned many many coats before learning this lesson. There are some cons that I'll mention, but this is just me nitpicking to ensure a full review. But as you can see I rated it 5stars because none of these cons are ones that should diminish the greatness of this coat. First of all, in terms of sizing, it's a bit odd. I'm 6'0" 190lbs and found myself to be kind of stuck between the medium and the large. I went with the large and this it's the right pick. Fits perfectly under the arms and across the chest with room for layering (not that you need it. My only issue is that the sleeves are a tab too long so they tend to bunch. Also, the ends of the sleeves are a little odd as they have an elastic sweater-like band that sits under the shell of the jacket. If I designed myself I would've made it one piece and an adjustable strap. The hood is fantastic. It lays really well behind you, is detachable and fits snug on the head to keep you warm with it's down filling. I do warn that if might not be the ideal size if you plan to wear a helmet. The hand warmers are so warm I don't even bother to wear gloves anymore. I've heard people complain about the positioning - they're lower than typical coats - but I very much prefer it so my arms aren't currently in a full bent position. Lots of pockets on this guy. Don't worry about not having room to store just about anything, large or small. I really like the velcro on the front. This allows for a quick closure when you don't need to fully zip up. Since the coat is long, it's very good that it has a double zipper - you'll need it when you sit down. The only con is that the zipper can get a little temperamental to get latched on. As for warmth, I find this to be the perfect balance. I live in DC which isn't the coldest of places, but being from Florida, I don't handle the cold very well. First day I got this coat I stood on the metro platform in about 30 degrees with the wind ripping at about 20mph. I didn't feel a thing! Only downside was it made me realize that much more how cold each part of my body NOT in the coat was. I've heard people complain about a lack of down in the arms, but I haven't experienced that. Mine seems to have a very even amount of down - not too much, not too little. Lastly, price. It's a little on the high end but I managed to get mine at the end of the year on clearance for $250. This was a long review, but I know how much I appreciated reading them while searching so wanted to be thorough for others. Simple Advice: Buy this coatPros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

This coat is very warm. I have worked for several hours outdoors in sub 30 degree temperatures and this coat did not fail. I would recommend this coat to anyone looking for a durable coat that will keep you warm.
Awesome coat for winter in Chicago
January 13, 2010
I bought this coat looking for a nice, solid, professional looking jacket, that would not make me look like I was just coming off the ski slopes or heading to Mt. Everest. It's perfect - warm, comfortable, well built - very happy with the purchase!
comfy and warm
January 11, 2010
Its been in the 20's and windy for the past week here in NYC, and this coat has kept me warm with only a shirt underneath. My only complaint is that the pockets are much too small. I have trouble getting my blackberry or Nokia N95 into the Ipod pocket. I don't carry a bag, like to keep my current letters and checkbook in my pockets. Not possible with this coat. I could do this without a problem with my previous Shell/Fleece combo
Great, warm coat!
January 09, 2012
I ordered this to replace a peacoat which wasn't doing very much to keep me warm. This has made a complete difference! When I'm wearing it, I can't feel any cold breeze coming through. In fact, while wearing it in 30 degree weather, I even felt kinda hot. I'm about 5'10", 190 and the large fits me perfectly. Definitely glad I ordered this coat. I have no complaints about it so far!Pros: Build quality, Performance
February 27, 2011
I was looking for a very warm jacket that also had a hint of style in that I travel on business. I went through several different choices and this one truly fit the bill. I think this jacket is less informal that most down jackets and retains a smart "business" look when you have to travel outside for business in cold conditions. Great jacket and very good service from Altrec as well.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance

Anything mountain Hardware is a solid investment. Jacket very warm and Packs easily into its own stuff sack. Athletic cut fits excellent. Only minor negative is no interior pocket.
I love this coat
November 18, 2008
I don't need any layers under this coat and I'm still very toasty.
Warm and Great Fit
February 17, 2008
I bought this jacket after trying less expensive 650 fill-power down jackets from Lands' End and Cabelas. Neither were nearly as warm or offered as much coverage as this jacket. The extra length adds a surprising amount of warmth and it is cut for excellent freedom of movement. It also looks better than any down jacket I've ever owned. Highly recommended!

Best jacket I had, vary warm and light weight, good sizes hand warmer pockets.perfect for walking on the streets at NYC.two inches shorter would be better.Pros: Build quality, Ease of use, Cons: Cost

Very warm. Slim fit. I don't feel like a big poof ball in this coat, yet it is thick and warm. Good sleeve length. (I am 6'3" 180lbs) I bought a large and love the fit. MOUNTAIN HARDWEAR IS KING BABY!!!
Super warm, not stodgy
November 18, 2009
When waiting for a bus on the coldest days, I can't imagine a better coat. Despite the thick insulation, it cuts a trim figure. If you exercise, though, the heat builds up and the coat will never let it go.

Only wore it once or twice because I bought it so late in season. It will go to Alaska with me in July, expect great things there. Good work Mountain Hardware.
Warm and Stylish Jacket
February 23, 2011
I got this jacket for my trip to EU in December. I was able to give a good try in my trip to the mountains. Jacket is very warm and waterproof. I also applied additional waterproofing from GORE to make even more resilient against elements. If you are looking for 3/4 type long jacket that is stylish and warm - you cannot go wrong with it. I put it against North Face and Patagonia jackets - both went back... but this one is the one.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Ease of use, Great value

I was waiting for a bus 2 AM in the morning and the jacket kept me really warm in temperature of 25F. Also, I like the design of chest pocket. Overall I would recommend this jacket. February 06, 2012
After moving to the Windy City of Chicago, I needed a down parka that would be both comfortable and stylish. This coat completely fits the bill, and provides excellent warmth. The insulated hood is highly functional, as are the fleece lined pockets. My only complaint is that there aren't quite enough pockets to satisfy me - just 2 hand pockets and 1 left chest pocket, with no extra pockets on the inside of the coat. But the coat also looks GREAT - I can wear it with business casual or formal attire. It looks more like a coat than any other winter jacket I've owned. Also, regarding my pockets comment, the minimal number of external pockets definitely helps the style and look of the coat. I can tell that the coat is high quality, and it has stood up to the elements during Chicago winter. The fit is also wonderful - I'm 5'8", 165, medium build, and the Medium fits me perfectly.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, warmth, Cons: few pockets
Warm winter coat for office commute

My husband loves the warmth of the coat. He got an XL to provide comfort for his girth. The sleeves are a little long, but otherwise a nice fit.

Toasty coat that does the job! Great waterproofing and warmth in cold and rainy climates! Great fit and great looking. Mountain Hardware has done it again!
Must have for Michigan Winters!!
March 07, 2012
Michigan winters offer so much more than bitter cold!! The usual mix of sleet, snow wind and rain demand a warm, windproof and waterproof coat. This one does it all with the classic but nice looking longer parka style. Not too puffy and kind of sleek. Fits true to size. I bought a large for my 5'11" 180 lb husband and it fits perfectly with a few light layers.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, sleek styling
feels&feedback for an S wearing M
January 26, 2011
Firstly I think I should thank JoeJ, YankeesFan and Jaws179(and the same to jerseygal, should consider your advice earlier, maybe) for their kindly help with my final decision, which was seemingly to be more difficult than finding out this jacket. After scrolled through the pages of reviews I gotta be more confused. Mine fits well with S in the MHw sizing chart but from the feedbacks it turned out to be small. Can't wait but give a shot before the winter goes. I bought an M finally, which I believe till now still between "perfect" and a little "large".It has longer sleeves that exceed more than half of my hands, (looks a little bulky at ends when wearing), and the bottom of coat cover up well over my hip. The neck and chest were OK. Should say for me the slim design defeated the length cons and made it looks a great down jacket. Just for more information. One inside pocket had been added for wallet in 2010 version, and the two handwarmer pockets were so good to stop coldness and heat up my frozen fingers in minuts. So was the soft hood for ears, really much down enough for the enjoyable feeling..and how I wish the forearms contain the same much! The best chance to test the cold leakage in arms should be when the body catch a cold or extremely starving, bad enough that both happened to be carried out in mine. Like many put it, the results were negative---it began to chill from nowhere but one of my forearms, then the other. Unlike what is seen on the pics of this jacket, the conduit softshell is not glossy at all but kind of matte and tough, breathable with fine mesh textile, should be durable for a few winters.Till now the hissing static has not occured while slightly, some fine soft white down leakout was seen on my sweater and elsewhere the jacket was put, well not a big issue though. Briefly, a good design, comfortable, warm enough for commuter and "downtown" travel, with a few cons for those who really care. Based on these, before a "yes" or "no" for recommendation, I would recommend friends to scroll the pros and cons in this page and decide themselves.
Decent, but not perfect...

Got the Mtn Hardwear Downtown Coat a few weeks ago. Because of the mild weather in Chicago so far I've only worn it a few times. It's very warm. I was skeptical at first because I did read a few reviews that the down insulation wasn't filled in the arms. I haven't checked if the insulation is sparse or not. All I know is that when it was in the teens and windy my arms were plenty warm. No issues there, but I do have a few complaints... The inside material is very 'staticky' and seems to attract every bit of fuzz, dog fur, dander, dust, etc. Also the outer shell material - though seemingly fairly high quality - seems to collect quite a bit of lint, fuzz and dog fur, too. This coat really needs deeper/bigger pockets and more of them. The fleece lined hand warmer pockets are nice, although they can really only warm hands because after you put them in there there's no room for anything else. There is one small outside pocket that's also not very practical; I can stuff a beanie in it but it makes the coat bulge out. Also, there's a small inside chest pocket that seems very delicate, almost flimsy, with a small zipper that's hard to operate with one hand because the liner/pocket material is so light and loose. It too can't hold more than a cell or MP3 player. As most down coats are bulky, this one is probably normal or maybe even a little extra bulky as far as that's concerned. The picutres, however, make the coat looks very sleek...it is not. I got the coat in black. All the logos and stitched printing on the coat is also black, but the pic shows that some of it is white. I actually like that the logos aren't very visable, just my opinion. I don't know about the effectiveness of the waterproofing. This coat is so warm I don't think there's any reason to wear this coat unless it's well below freezing. Maybe it's due to a lack a breatheability, but I have to take the coat off the minute I get inside or on the bus/train, otherwise I overheat. Like I said this coat is really warm... Overall it's decent for the price, it has flaws, but not enough to bother returning it.Pros: very warm, Cons: needs more pockets, needs bigger pockets, kinda bulky
Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat

Difficult to describe the fit. Arms are very long but shoulders are very narrow. My son is a slender, athletic man. He typically wears a man's medium. This medium is really too narrow in the chest/shoulders to be good to wear in the cold weather when you would typically wear a sweatshirt or sweater underneath. Good looking coat with nice long sleeves (he has 34" sleeve length), but odd fit which is unusual for coats in his size. He is considering returning the coat. On the other hand, Altrec is the best. Great company, great service, honest promises, and terrific products at reasonable prices. This is one of several items I purchased for Christmas, and I am totally pleased with them!Pros: Build quality, Cons: Bad design
very nice coat
February 05, 2011
My purchase was back in Oct of 2008. So, I've been wearing this coat for two seasons now. At first I thought it was snug but, that's because it's a coat, not a jacket. And I believe the snugness is what helps provide nice warmth. But, I don't think it's snug anymore and I'm sure it has shaped to fit my body now. There's a dual zipper, reverse up - the coat extends beyond your waist which restricts extreme leg movement and bending. The zipper allows for extra movement when needed. (I've got it down now.) This is my favorite winter "dress" coat. I originally bought it for the smooth exterior (mine's black) and down interior. I'm a believer in down. It's exactly what I expected and looks great. I don't wear a scarf with it and usually all that I'm wearing under it is a t-shirt and a long sleeve dress shirt. With that, it's warmth is good down to the single digit temps. It'll get too warm when the temp is in the upper twenties. So, the sweet spot is in the teens. It's got a nice assortment of pockets. I keep my cell in the zip chest pocket - super handy. The hand pockets are lined and comfy but - you've probably already read that stuff... My coat came with the embroidered Mountain Hardware logo only - there's no text so, it looks really cool.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use
very good buy
January 19, 2010
I bought the coat for my husband who likes this type of coat that he can wear for the office as well as for the weekend especially during the 20 degree days that we had recently. He loved the coat because it is really warm, light and not bulky like other down coats. We are very pleased with the purchase.

very warm and soft to the touch. I love it.

GREAT JACKET!!!!!!!!. GO GET YOUR SELF ONE. YOU WILL LOCK GREAT AND YOU WILL STAY VERY WARM.
Solid down jacket
January 03, 2007
I found this jacket to be warm, comfortable and functional. For style, well I don't think that down jackets by their nature are meant for "style". The jacket is certainly not too bulky and doesn't accentuate my spare tire. I am quite satisfied with my purchase.

Great winter coat! Warm and comfy. Medium fits well. I am 5'7" 145 lbs. Location of pockets are well positioned and the insulated hood is super warm. Would prefer to have more down in the sleeves.
Great Coat (so far)
January 23, 2012
I've only had the Downtown Coat for a few weeks but so far, so good. We just had our first real cold and snow in Chicago and the coat kept me warm. It is a big coat but it fits perfectly without too much extra bulk. The hood works well but can zip off when not needed and the coat is long enough to cover your rear - which are both benefits to me.Pros: Build quality, Performance
Great for downtown or outdoors!
February 21, 2011
I love this coat! Purchased for rough and windy winters strolling the streets of downtown Chicago. Provided excellent warmth on a cold day. Great water repelling ability when I walked in a rainstorm yesterday. The coat is so warm sometimes I have to take it off because I get too hot! The design is great as well. Covers your thighs and butt to keep you extra warm. I love the knit cuffs and collar which provided added comfort so that you don't feel like you're wearing some hardcore field coat. I love the zipoff hood for when you don't need any head protection. Overall a great purchase. Just be careful that you don't buy more than you need if your winters are more mild. Would recommend to anyone! Altrec ships very promptly as well so kudos to them, I will definitely buy here again.Pros: Great design, comfortable, Cons: Cost

Overall a great jacket. Nice and warm for chilly spring nights out here in the Colorado Mtns. The fleece lining combined with the down allows the jacket to second as a pillow for backpacking.
Great jacket in both performance as well as looks!
January 06, 2007
This is a great jacket. Not only is it warm but it looks awesome. It goes away from the traditional horizontal "puff bars" of other down jackets and gives really good lines that accentuates the male figure. Again, its very warm, you can't feel chill or wind going through it whatsoever. And at $140, its not that expensive for a down jacket either. The only thing I wish it had was an outside zip pocket like the woman's version.
A comfortable Jacket

This coat keeps the wind out and is plenty warm for the city. I like the fit. The neck is snug and saves me the trouble of wearing a scarf.
December 27, 2007
Light weight, warm, well made. I'm 5'8" and size "L" sleeves are a bit too long but knit cuffs make it acceptable. Especially like the flat outer shell -- don't look like the Michelin Man even though it's a down jacket. Highly Recommended.
good coat, not much insulation in the arms
February 15, 2010
Nice looking coat, comfortable, comfortable hand-warmer pockets, good for town in cold but not frigid weather due to little insulation in the arms.
Michelin Man Outfit
December 23, 2006
This jacket is warm, light, and very well made, but stylish it is not. Of course all puffy jackets have the Michelin Man effect to some degree, but this one has a fitted cut that looks a bit cartoonish. The quilted abdominal muscles are also striking. This jacket simply does not live up to its "downtown" ambitions. One of the things I liked about this jacket in the photos was its relative lack of logo bling. In reality, there is a large MHW stitched logo on the left sleeve and another bolt logo on the back of the neck, so I think the pic is a bit deceptive. Again, technically it's a very nice jacket, but if style is a concern for you, I would be sure to check this jacket out in a local shop before ordering. With all that said, Altrec's return policy is fantastic.
February 08, 2008
Great coat. So far it has been great in both rainy and cold weather(for Texas, temps in the 30s) and yet not too warm for wearing when it is a bit warmer. I would recommend it.
I love this jacket
February 15, 2007
It's probably the warmest jacket I've ever worn. The fleece lining is very soft. The fit is much more flattering than the usual puffy down jacket. Highly recommended.
