Description

It requires spirit to leave the shorts behind and hike in a skirt, but the Mountain Hardwear Elkommando Kilt for men is probably the most masculine skirt you're going to find. Kilt aficionados swear by the unrestricted movement and added ventilation of the design for backcountry hiking and trekking.

The nylon canvas Elkommando features a durable water repellant finish and a polyester chamois lining for long-haul comfort and fast-drying performance. The combination lends it a nice burly feel, while the easy-fit waist with integrated belt guarantees the perfect fit. Full back panel pleats enhance overall mobility, and side-mounted cargo pockets provide plenty of easy-access storage for essential items.

Guys with two thru hikes and 5000+ miles under their belts swear by the comfort of a nice breezy kilt. You never know, once you discover the comfort of the Mountain Hardwear Men's Elkommando Kilt you may never go back to traditional hiking shorts.

ELKOMMANDO KILT EXPERIENCE
July 20, 2011

1st experience wearing a kilt. Wore it to an Irish Fest. Little tentative sitting & bending over @ first. No worries later. Pleats and center snap designed perfectly. Very comfortable. Convenient. Plenty of onboard storage space. XL fit just a tad smaller than I like. Size 38 waist. Belt and front waist snap were @ their limit, but not uncomfortable or looked stressed in any way. Received numerous compliments particularly from the Scots who were wearing traditional wool kilts in 90 degree weather, while I was reasonably cool & comfortable. Usually wear shorts 50 degrees and above anyway. Now have another alternative. Can't wait to have an excuse to wear it to another festival, family gathering, golf? or hitting the trail.

Highly Recommended

I wore it on several hikes in the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains. It was very comfortable and none of the other hikers commented on it one way or the other. It's great--give it a try.

Super comfortable! I definitely plan on using this kilt often. I look forward most to using it while changing out of my wetsuit or board shorts after kiteboarding and kayaking.

Pros: Build quality, Ease of use, Cons: Cost

Great Kilt
September 14, 2010

I purchased the first model last year and liked it a lot. This years effort is even better. It adds the traditional pleating and better pockets. I would like to see them get rid of the integrated belt and just put belt loop on the kilt. Items like a leatherman or GPS holster would work much better. I do like it enough I think I will order a second one. It compares to a $140. kilt that I purchased several years ago.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Great value

Outstanding!

I Love it! I foresee many comfortable days (around town and out hiking) ahead in this!

Very Comfortable
August 20, 2007

I realize that is called a Mountain Kilt, but I like to put it on after a long "Mountain" Bike ride. Yeah I take a ribbing for it, but at my age (58), comfort is priority and this kilt fits the bill.

Excellent

Much better than the first model.

Cool on long hikes
August 20, 2009

I used to always buy those zip off hiking pants, that was until I read the reviews on this item and bought the mountain Kilt to try out. This is comfortable and allows for cool hiking even in hot humid weather. So break away from the crowd, get comfortable. Like the saying goes---A man wearing a Kilt is a man and a half.

Elkommando Kilt
March 21, 2011

This kilt is the most comfortable piece of clothing I own. Perfectly sized, quality material, and stiching, this kilt will last a long time. Chamois material inside the waistband feels great,I regret now waiting to buy one, so I'm ordering another.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, great looking, super comfortable

Love Mine!
March 12, 2008

I have 3 of these and wear them every chance I get. The comfort is unbelievable. Guys, if you have never experienced the sensation of wearing a skirt/kilt and having the breeze right where it counts most, you are missing a simple pleasure which societal conventions have denied you. To heck with said conventions -- get yourself one of these and don't look back!

Quite versatile
May 04, 2008

The pockets are larger than on my other kilts and the zipper is handy. There is a key clip in the left pocket that is also handy. The material is very comfortable and very lightweight, yet stays put surprisingly well. It is the only kilt I have ever owned that did not require a kilt pin, which is not surprising since it is not wool. The buckles are easy to work with. The only downside is that the modesty snap is very clumsy and takes a minute to get the hang of.

seems to be well made
August 26, 2008

I'll know better when I fit into it. I've been on weight watchers and ordered the kilt to meet me at the 180 lb mark. I've already lost 30 and before long I'll be in the kilt and hiking. I'll let you know more then.

Goin' Kommando
September 20, 2012

Dont be chicken! If you're reading this then you're already thinkin' it. Go ahead and give it a try! I'm a long hiker and pack as light as I can. That usually means just one pair of pants. The problem is that I'm none too fond of my own trail funk. After three or four days hiking in the rain, the trousers can get a bit musty. That drove me to give kilted hiking a try. I'll never go back. I tried just about every "Cargo-Kilt" out there and they were all way too heavy and way too bulky. I even made my own hiking kilt but it wasn't as good as the Elkommando. The fit is true to size, it's wonderfully light, it dries wicked fast and fits under my (Osprey Exos) pack belt better than any other pants I've worn. Go for it! Oh, and there's the bonus that the girls LOVE guys in kilts! Just sayn'

So comfortable
September 11, 2007

Wore mine on a trip to the White Mountians in NH. My friends got a good laugh at the start of the trip, but I had the last laugh at the end when they all told me how gelous they were. Also several AT through hikers wear it

Fabulous for long AND short distance hikers
June 10, 2009

The Mountain Hardware hiking kilt is the PERFECT garment for long and short distance hikers. I first purchased one on a 300 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail and recently bought this new one from Altrec. The kilt fits men and women, has a conservative length and leaves nothing to be desired. I ordered a small (I wear a women's pant size 4/6). It sits high on my waist which is preferable for protection from my back pack. Throw on a pair of long underwear bottoms for a cool summer night in the mountains and enjoy the breeze during the heat of the day! GREAT find! :)

Try it, you'll love it!!!
July 15, 2009

This is my second Mountain Kilt so it is obvious that I think highly of it. On the weekends you can almost always find me in it as it can be dressed up or down. It is great for hiking and has replaced pants AND shorts in all but the coldest weather. My only feedback to Mountain Hardware is that it is sized way too small...I require an XL and I have a 34" waist...hardly XL. The should incorporate some elastic to allow some flexibility in sizing. Some other colors would be great too.

Awesome
January 18, 2009

Ditto to every positive statement. This is a great deal on a great kilt. Most comfortable clothing man ever made. World's best kept secret, actually.

Very Practical
February 19, 2007

If you want to avoid chafing from shorts and want to have the ultimate in ventilation, a kilt/skirt is the way to go, assuming you don't mind the curious stares.

Excellent kilt

Great material & very stylish :)

Great at the Camp Site
June 18, 2009

I have found this Kilt quite comfortable around the group camp site. I recieved a few directed questions/comments while at the Irish Festival. All good. While I fit well into the XL, there are those of us that need a bit larger. I am sure if 2x,3x,4x,+ were offered, there would be quite a few more Mountain Kilts ordered at least from my group.

Watch out Arnold and that girl from Who's The Boss
October 18, 2010

I have both models. Both are awesome, but if I could make a recommendation for the ultimate modle. Tho the cargo pockets are handy and make it look more manly I miss the side pockets;( the ruffles of this years model are a good addition, but think a carry over of the ruffle to other the entire front or right past the cargo pocket would add more of the manly look. All in all love these kilts!!! But guys at MH if you are reading this, man up the front with something... Stiching, ruffles, it needs something (hey did I just say man it up with ruffles...Oxymoron) And please, please put back the side hip pockest, but still keep the cargo pockets.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance

Outstanding practicality
February 24, 2008

Although not always suitable for the weather here in the UK, I have found the mountain kilt to be extremely benficial in hot and humid weather. Its design obviously allows for increased ventilation but in addition the material choices are well made and the quality is good. I can see many years of happy use ahead of me.

Perfect Leg Wear
November 05, 2010

This Kilt is great! In hot weather, I always sweat out bifurcated bottoms, but not this kilt. I wore it every day on a 7 day backpacking trip, and it was the only piece of clothing I had at the end of the trip that was not completely funked. Plus, it's a great conversation piece! The only thing I might ask Mountain Hardware to change is add different color choices. Please include tartans!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use

Amazing comfort
September 08, 2009

I have been looking a purchasing one for years and finally did. With a 30-32 inch waist the medium was a bit tight and not easily worn so I returned and sized up as most people have suggested. Even though I have to tighten the side pulls the full length, this one will not be returned. My spouse is requesting trying it on (i.e. may be lost to her). Free flowing and amazingly comfortable, I only wish I had it during a trip to the Italian Dolomites to hike in. The Mountain Hardwear website no longer has this product available, which leads me to believe that it is going to be discontinued. Guys, you won't be disappointed. As for those that question, well, they will never know or understand.

Would Wear it Every Day
June 20, 2007

I love this item. I'd wear it everyday if I could. Fit is extremely comfortable. Heck with those who think skirts are just for girls.
