This is a very warm jacket, but I had to return it because it runs very small. I'm 5'7", and ordered a small jacket, but the sleeves were extremely short.

Very Nice Jacket
October 21, 2009

This jacket is exellent for Winter time, great for temperatures bet -5deg Celsius through +15deg Celsius. Extremely light weight, I am a Pilot, and my subzero goes with me everywhere.

Great down coat!
January 07, 2008

And at a price you can't beat. Reinforced elbows, convenient pouch to pack it in, good zippers, and overall great construction. However its only 650 fill, good for everyday use, but I wouldn't suggest it if you're serious about cold excursions.

Very compact
September 24, 2009

Great down jacket for backpacking when cold weather is expected. Extremely compact and warmth to weight ratio gets 4+ stars. Recently took this jacket on a backpacking trip into the Eastern Sierra's and it performed better than expected. I am 5'11" 190 lbs. and the large size fit perfect over two layers.

Great jacket
November 24, 2009

Great jacket for cold Lake Tahoe mornings. I wear only a t-shirt underneath and feel quite comfortable. Packs nicely into backpack. Would recommend to anyone who justs wants to throw on one jacket and run out the door on cold days.

Good Jacket
June 01, 2010

Pros : warm, packs to a small size, looks good Cons : I would prefer that it were longer, it has a static charge that attracts dust and dirt like a magnet. Overall I like the coat. Its best used as a base layer as it isn't very wind proof and isn't water proof. I'm 6' 1" 190lbs and the large fits great with only a t-shirt underneath. If you plan on layering underneath this coat, buy one size larger.

Great Jacket
May 24, 2008

Very light weight, and warm. Great design as well. I would definetely recomend it.

this coat rocks!
December 04, 2009

Altrec got this coat to me within 2-3 days of my purchase. Based on the reviews posted by other buyers, I chose the large. I am 6' 190lbs., and it fits perfectly. It's very light and nonrestrictive. I love this coat.

Love it!
November 27, 2012

Husband bought this before thanksgiving. Worn while walking the mall and museums with heavy wind and dropping temps. Easy to stow in a backpack when inside. Cuffs worked well and the felt lined collar is very warm.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Great value

Nice warm jacket at good price point
February 11, 2008

I recently bought the house brand jacket at a Really large Equipment Internet/B&M store and ended up returning it because for 650 fill, it wasn't all that warm and the wind just sailed right on through it. On the other hand, the subzero is a tad bit heavier, is toasty warm and stands up to the wind. This isn't a technical jacket, the nylon shell is very thin in this class of jacket so watch those sticker bushes! However, for a "daily driver" it fits the bill well. I'm in-between a men's med and large and like to have extra room for layers. I realize this isn't a parka however, do wish the large I got was a bit longer. Finally, the last tube of down filling at the bottom of the coat, around the back of my hips, seems like it only got 1/2 a shot of down filling; it's a bit sparsely filled and I'm concerned about warmth in that area if I'm out all day. All in all, I'm happy with the coat.

Warm without the bulk
December 30, 2009

I bought this jacket for my husband who hates to wear layers and doesn't really like wearing jackets either because of the bulk. I figured I'd give this one a try, we live in Madison, WI and it's ridiculously cold all the time. He loves it. Doesn't have to layer up and it's not big and bulky when he's in the car or has to set it down etc. I found the jacket to look great on and be a stylish fit, we got the XL he's 6'2 and 200 lb. fits perfect. Thanks to Altrec for the great price and free shipping.

Durable choice
September 28, 2007

The MHW Subzero is the most durable "lightweight" down jacket I have ever owned. Reinforcing on arms and shoulders help keep it from getting torn up. Less expensive than most comparable jackets too.

To short on Torso
January 04, 2010

I sent mine back because it was to short on the torso. I'm 5'10" 155lb. I have a normal size torso and I imagine this jacket would be awesome for shorter people with smaller torso's. Other than that, awesome quality.

warm and comfortable
February 15, 2008

This jacket is very comfortable and warm. but the size is so fit for me. I think the length is so shorth. I bought M size. but I am satisfied with this one. I recommend it.

Excellent jacket
September 08, 2009

A riend of mine usud it and its more than good. Very warm and comfortable to use. Excellent jacket!!!!

Love the weight! (actually the lack thereof,)
October 26, 2009

I have advanced C.O.P.D and my former winter coat weighed in at about 8 pounds. Combining that with the weight of a portable oxygen tank I would tire quickly when walking about. I also do not handle cold weather very well. This coat is truly "light as a feather" at about a pound and a half and cold winds do not penetrate it. The fleece-lined pockets are a welcome bonus feature. I also find it quite stylish and I don't look like the Michelin man when wearing it. It was considered a special order item for some reason so it took a bit longer to receive it but it was worth the wait.

Very Nice
July 29, 2011

Light jacket and warm, fits great and looks very nice, altough is not for xtreme cold. It can be used with only a t-shirt under it. I recomend it to people who wants to wear something warm and not tha expensive and look good.

Pros: Great design, Ease of use, Cons: Cost

Perfect for Chicago winter
January 31, 2009

Warm and comfortable. I am 5'7" 185lbs. I wear a large and it fits well. 44" suit coat won't put me in a medium. Chicago winters are long and cold. This coat will get use. Velcro straps on wrists are nice touch and numerous pockets are great.

Very warm but feathers often fall out
December 31, 2009

My husband loves the jacket because of its warmth and appearance. many of the feathers have come out of the jacket which is annoying to him and to me. The jacket cost too much for feathers to come out like they do.

December 15, 2009

Great Jacket. Came as advertised. Excellent service

Great Jacket
September 07, 2009

True to size. Fits in the stuff bag. Just perfect for our European trip.

my father loves it!
November 18, 2009

well i am in south korea and i found this cool duck down jacket from altrec. i was wondering if it feet to my father. coz i never buy any jacket from online. as soon as i got it , i gave it to my father and he loves this! he said its great color and good quality! This jacket is excellent for Winter time!!

Tough & warm, bit of a large fit
May 14, 2009

Nice features: Fabric is heavier/more durable to other puffy jackets in this category which makes the jacket cram pack, throw in the trunk, sit on, damage resitant. There are plenty of pockets & a couple of nice synch cords to seal out the wind. Con: No real cons other than the jacket does seem to run a bit on the large size. I'm 150lbs, 30" waist and will return the medium for a small.

Excellent jacket that can handle abuse!
October 11, 2008

Up here in Fort St.John (Northern BC)you need a jacket for cold nights (-35 to -40 deg.C)...Two of my friends purchased this jacket and used it for sheep and elk hunting in the Northern Rockies and in the Aleutian mountains near the border of Alaska. So far the jacket has been outstanding: warm, light, tough. I really like the light cordura on the shoulders and the back side of the arms. The Nuptse jacket by TNF does not have that abrasion resistant fabric. Great if you're going to carry a pack! The little stuff sack they give you is also a convenient bonus. Very light and outstanding for wilderness adventures, classy enough for town wear.

Mountain Hardwear Apparel
February 13, 2012

Another great Mountain Hardwear product. Well made and very functional. This jacket is very warm and comfortable to wear. I love the zippered chest pocket, and the inside pouch is perfect for carrying my checkbook when shopping.

This jacket is the best!!
March 04, 2008

I have been looking for a down jacket for my father for a long time, actually purchasing and returning a few, and finally the Sub Zero. My father and I love the color, thickness, and style. It's the best buy in terms of it's quality and price!

Great light weight jacket!!
February 15, 2009

I bought this jacket as an all around winter jacket. I have been more than impressed with the warmth and the light weight. In 20deg temps all I need under it is a tee shirt!! I am 6'2" and 210lbs and the XL works great. It leaves just enough room under it for layering in colder weather.

Great Cold Weather Jacket
February 17, 2008

Purchased this jacket for the cold weather that has been occurring in the midwest. This jacket is very warm and windproof. I love it!

I am a huge fan of Mountain Hardware and am a slim fit. In this case, I ordered a small and the jacket was uncomfortably short in the waist, so I automatically sent it back for the Patagonia Fitz Roy. I'm still loyal to the brand and wish I could have made this one work. Just too short.

Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, Great value, Cons: Bad design

great jacket, believe what you read about it!
February 22, 2009

It just does what it claims to do! True to size, very wind resistant, warm and comfortable. Has been great in a cold, windy high desert environment.

Very warm
February 13, 2008

Very warm jacket. Picked this over the North Face Nuptse for the price and for the more durable material on the shoulders/arms. Wished that the hooded model didn't cost so much more. Stayed warm in Wisconsin sub zero temps with just a t-shirt on underneath. Only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is that some down feathers are starting to poke out after just a few weeks.

nice & warm.

Good jacket - Fast delivery
January 06, 2008

I ordered this jacket just before Christmas and was told it would be here in January but instead it arrived a few days before Christmas .. so great delivery. The jacket so far has proved to be just what I was looking and for and I am not disappointed in UK weather. The real test will be soon when I travel to Moscow in the height of their winter but I don't, based on my trial so far expect any nasty surprises. In short a good comfortable jacket and a good purchase. The range of larger sizes in fantastic and better than the UK.Will be back again I am sure, keep up the larger size stocks please.

Nice, warm jacket
June 11, 2010

I've been nothing but happy with this jacket. I got the large and the fit was perfect for me (I'm 6', 160). It's been a joy to throw it on first thing on those frosty mornings when you;re dreading rolling out of the tent. Keeps me toasty warm.

Very good jacket
January 14, 2008

This jacket is warm and easy to wear, sizing is great for me,a little short. The color is really nice black and blue. For New York its great.

Outstanding Jacket
June 23, 2012

The Hunker Down is my jacket of choice for day use when the temps are below 20*F. The more durable fabric on the shoulders and sleeves has proven very useful when I'm hiking around and scrambling through rocks or trees. I find the fit is a little on the shorter side. I have an average torso length, but am 6'1". Still, this fit issue is just barely noticeable. I have used this jacket for one mild winter season so far, and expect it to last.

Pros: Performance, Ease of use

December 14, 2009

No other words to describe a jacket I can wear over a tee-shirt in 10deg weather and not even feel the cold.

Buy of the year
December 18, 2007

I love this jacket,i chose it as an alternative to a north face nuptse as eveyone in england has one. I'm so glad i did as most people prefer my jacket to their own!! Great product that i can trek in the hills with knowing i wont feel the cold.

Toasty Warm and Comfortable
June 07, 2012

It is one of the best sellers in the market. It is toasty warm and very comfortable unlike some of bulky down jackets. Durable fabric structure insures both backcountry activities and downtown walking in cold weather.

Pros: Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, Cons: Cost

Great Jacket
September 16, 2009

Perfect fit, excellent high quality material, extremely warm. This is my 2nd Sub zero.I use it in wintertime in Russia, elegant, light weight, and very comfortable.

Very nice!!
August 23, 2008

My wife laughed at me for getting this jacket for the climate that we have in Georgia. That laugh changed when she asked to wear it on a cold winters night running errands. Mountain Hardwear has gained me as a fan of their products!!!

excellent jacket
May 13, 2009

When I unpacked the jacket at first I was concerned how warm it would be compared to my other(different brand) more bulky down jacket, but I found that this jacket was plenty warm in our cold windy Minnesota climate and even warmer than the other more bulky jacket.

Comfortable, Light, and Extremely Warm
December 16, 2009

I live in Madison Wisconsin where the wind chill is often times sub zero and I love this jacket. It's extremely warm!

Light, Warm, & Not Too Puffy
December 28, 2009

Not a huge fan of the puffy down jacket and this one isn't. Went with this one since I was tired of being cold all the time with my thin soft shell. Mountain Hardwear is my brand of choice. This coat is perfect for cold winter days. There is a reason everyone gives this jacket 5 stars. Enjoy!

Nice n toasty without the bulk
February 07, 2010

Purchased this jacket for my fall (Nov 09) fly fishing trip to Eastern Sierra. Based on the sizing chart I've ordered a med which fits me perfectly. Although I wish the length can be a few inches longer, I'm torso tall... Nevertheless, the draw strings inside the jacket kept the cold draft out. The jacket kept me warm enough in 20F degree weather and all I had on was a T shirt. It comes with it's own stuff sack, which is great when your traveling with two other guys with limited storage space. My purchase decision was based on excellent reviews here at Altrec.

Very nice jacket!
January 04, 2010

I love the jacket will definatly buy more Mountain Hardware apparel!!

April 24, 2010

Surpassed all expectations.

Warm, Light and Versatile
November 18, 2009

I've used this jacket everywhere from Mt Rainier to early spring overnights in the Adirondacks. It's incredibly light, immensely packable, and absolutely warm. It's the one jacket you want against extreme cold apart from your outer/softshell. Excellent as an alternative to the full parka, which is bulkier. Great around town for cold winter conditions too.

The length of the Jacket is very short
February 11, 2008

Unfortunately, I returned 4 of the 5 jackets that I had purchased for my family. The Jacket length was much too low and kept creeping up above the waistline causing a draft to enter from the bottom of the jacket. This said, the folks at Altrec was fantastic in expediting the return with absolutely no fuss or difficulties. I would continue to purchase from Altrec.

from Prescott,AZ.

February 13, 2012

I have been looking at another Mountain Hardwear jacket waiting for my size to be restocked only to find it was replaced with the Hunker Down jacket. It is the same product with a different name. recently moved to AZ. mtns from CO. mtns. This is a great jacket, warm, lightweight. You don't need to layer much (depending on temps). This jacket is great by itself. Altrec is great too! Great customer service. I tell everyone about them.

great jacket
December 30, 2008

comfortable, fits well, less bulky than some (North Face) but more bulky than a down sweater. Made to be outerwear. Keeps me warm in cold, dry high desert climate; great for hiking, hanging out even with temps in 20's or below. I've worn it hiking in the low 20's with just a long sleeve T underneath and been a bit warm.

Love the Jacket
February 26, 2008

I just recently wore it up into the mountains while it was snowing and didn't even have to have another jacket on with it. Great jacket I love it

Outstanding down jacket!
December 04, 2008

This jacket is warm and light weight; when combined with an outer shell it has proven to be an outstanding buy. Jacket is short in length (only down to your waist) but I found this to be OK with the outer shell. The jacket does not have pit zips which would be a plus.

This is a great jacket
June 08, 2009

I love this jacket. It is a warm durable and packs great. Just don't get it to wet. It will handle a mist and a really light rain but not much more than that. Other than that I have had this for about a year in the northern Illinois winter and it has been a great jacket so far.

Will not keep you warm on motorcycle
November 27, 2009

It was 37 degrees outside. I put on a long sleeve "T" shirt, then the Sub Zero Jacket, and then my Harley Davidson raincoat. Went for a drive at 60 mph and I was cool, not cold. I have a Honda Goldwing 1800 with windshield. On a long haul I am sure my body temperature would drop to the point I would need more layers. Disappointed in my purchase.

Excellent Jacket
August 26, 2009

Just got this jacket a few weeks ago and it fits pretty well, length is spot on but the circumference around the waste is a little large. I am 5'10" 170 lbs, so I think this jacket is designed for someone with a little extra around the midsection. Otherwise I love the jacket and the ability to stow it in the stuff sac.

It's like wearing a down sleeping bag!
January 09, 2008

You can't go wrong with this jacket! Very warm in cold temps!!! I work with about 10 people who have this same jacket which have been purchased over the last few years. Everybody is still warm and happy with their Sub Zero Jacket!

The quality is much nicer than The North Face Nuptse
August 12, 2010

At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to get the North Face Nuptse jacket or this one. I'm so glad I chose the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero. The quality is much nicer than the Nuptse. When I tried the Nuptse on in the store I found that the zipper constantly got stuck by the flimsy nylon. The Sub Zero has nicer reinforced fabric around the zipper and in the key abrasion areas for increased durability. It also has fleece-lined pockets. I made the right chose with the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero.

Not suitable for cold weather what so ever
October 15, 2009

Virtually no down fill at all. A complete farce of a jacket. Returning immediately. Anyone who rates this 5 stars has not likely purchased what I'm holding in my hands now.

Light, packable and UNBELIEVABLY warm
December 29, 2009

I own one of these, and when I drew the name of my GF's brother for secret Santa, I knew this was exactly the kind of thing he could use. He recently started coaching a ski team, and unlike his normal fast paced state, it has him standing out in the cold for long periods of time. This jacket is the perfect combination of light weight and incredible warmth. And like all Mountain Hardware gear, the fit is athletic and the details all well thought out. You CANNOT lose with this jacket, if you want to be reeeeallllly warm.

Just what the Dr. ordered...
February 10, 2010

I recently purchased the Men's Sub Zero Jacket and it's perfect for my needs. The jacket is NOT BULKY, which is a big plus because I do not want to look or feel like The Michelin Man! It's lightweight, fashionably stylish; and the most important thing IT KEEPS ME WARM during the DAMP,cold winters in South Alabama. I really liked the collar that zips and covers your entire neck, front & back. The only change I'd like to see is a more discreet Mountain Hardwear logo. I appreciated the free shipping too!

not so great
December 07, 2009

I got this coat last year and by the end of winter all the down had migrated out of the back leaving me with nothing but nylon and a cold back. I've tried a few things to redistribute the filling, but nothing has worked so far.

wonderful jacket
August 24, 2008

Good looking jacket. Nice fabric. Wore it around the house, got too warm had to take it off. Got it at a great price.

Absolutely Fantastic service.
October 11, 2009

I find that US range of products far more extensive than that offered in Europe by the majority of the top end manufacturers. also there never seems to be any problem with sizing. All sizes are cateerd for & not limited as in the UK.From the time of order to delivery & receipt of the product, the service has been absolutely fantastic. Completely as your shipping policy & delivery service states... happened. No delay or no worthwhile import tax, A very enjoyable experience & will no doubt be ordering for you in the future. It's such a shame that a lot of the US manufacturers are placing a ban on export of their products from the US. As I have started to experience the problems as previously mentioned, Although on this occasion not. Very well done Altrec

Great purchase
November 18, 2009

I am very pleased with this jacket as is my wife (I ordered 2). It is great for the cold mornings when you don't have time to do a lot of layering. This jacket kept me incredibly warm on a windy and snowy day and I like that it is compact and easy to carry in my backpack. I would recommend this product and will consider other products by Mountain Hardwear.

Great down jacket!
December 10, 2009

This is the perfect jacket for cold winter nights and mornings here in California. Lightweight yet with plenty of warmth. Highly recommended! As always Altrec service was first rate.

durable, warm and light
November 22, 2009

it has a perfect fit, durable high quality material, extremely warm. i was contemplating on whether to get the phantom jacket or this sub-zero. i tried the phantom in the store and it was good fit, extremely toasty on the inside but it is out of my budget range. so i decided to take a gamble on this sub-zero jacket. and guess what, it is brilliant. it may not have same down fill as phantom, but the outer shell is certainly more durable and heavier duty than phantom. the only con is the jacket is slightly short above the waist-line. even so, this is a winner.

1st serious jacket 4 me
September 17, 2010

I recently got back into backpacking and day hikes. A friend of mine, who tends to research products ad nauseum and who religiously buys only top of the line gear, recommended this jacket to me, almost a year ago. A local retailer also had high praise for this jacket, so I decided it must be a good addition to my equipment/apparel. My purchase just happened to coincide with a trip to Sweden, where the weather can turn very cold. I was excited to have this jacket with me. In addition to the resilient exterior and the warmth it provides, it is lightweight and packs down pretty small; the latter two I found very helpful when I placed my checked baggage on the scale before departing. For those who travel internationally (I don't get to very often) you know that if your bag/luggage is over 50 pounds, you may be paying an additional 100 bucks for the excess weight. For those serious backpackers/climbers, you're conscientious of every ounce you stuff into your pack, so I think you'll find that this jacket will accommodate several needs. I also think the color and styling is pretty cool.

One good Jacket
March 05, 2011

The jacket is great. Super lightweight and durable jacket. puffy with out looking like a caveman around town. Very warm. I wear it with just a tshirt here in the new york area. Comfortable with alot of good features. large pockets. The only drawback is the down comes out of the jacket to often. I think that the polyester in the jacket needs to be up graded to a better quality with a tighter weave so the down doesn't come out other than that It is ONE GOOD JACKET.

Pros: Great value, light weight, Cons: sheds down to much

Mountain Hardware Sub Zero Jacket - 10 Plus
January 01, 2008

My family & I went to Loveland Pass, Co. for Xmas vacation 2007 where the temperature stayed anywhere from 12 degrees F. to -5 degrees F. I wore the Sub Zero Jacket & stayed warm the whole time. I give Mountain Hardware Sub Zero jacket a 10 for it's excellent quality & keeping me warm in this frigid weather.

high quality and warm jacket
January 27, 2010

i like this jacket because it's pretty warm and comfortable but the torso is way too short for a 6ft 4' person like me sometimes i try to pull it down so it can fit too well

Would have paid more.....
March 29, 2009

Got this jacket at a fantastic sale price and have loved it ever since. I have bigger and warmer DJ's, but unless it is Alaska cold (coldest part of winter), this is the jacket that comes out of my pack when the temp drops. Get one, you will not be disappointed.

The sub zero jacket is very warm, quite compact, and reasonably durable. I ordered the jacket according to Altrec measurements and, if I could do it again, I would have ordered the smaller size - it fits quite loose around the waist (although the arm length is about right). Overall, an excellent value in a warm down jacket.
