Whether you're hiking over simmering plateau rocks or backpacking through the shadows of a meandering sandstone canyon, the Mountain Hardwear Canyon Shirt provides relief and protection from searing sunlight. The Desert Cloth contains a blend of nylon and polyester fibers treated with a SPF 30 sun protection finish. These compressed fibers minimize UV penetration but unlike some tightly woven garments, the Canyon Shirt has a wicking finish to expedite moisture transfer away from your skin without that annoying clammy feeling. The proven rubber button design stays together many soapy immersions beyond the wooden and plastic buttons often found on some travel/tropical shirts.

Miles Adventures - 2009-10-22Love this shirt!
I use these for hiking and backpacking. I've tried various brands for this type of shirt, and ultimately this is my favorite. The material weight is just right; durable but lightweight, and it dries quickly. It features an athletic cut meaning it doesn't bunch up too much under the arms or around the waste. Lots of vents including the pockets, and the Napoleon pocket is easily accessible while wearing a pack. Colors seem to change often so if you have a favorite color grab a couple extra.

After purchasing the MH canyon pants, which are awesome, I decided to go for the MH canyon long sleeve shirt(large). I am 5'10", 155lbs, large shirt size shoulders/chest, long back, short, 30" inseam, 34" waist. The pant size I purchased is medium/short and they fit perfectly. Almost all other mens base through outer layer shell pants have 32" or longer inseams and the articulated knees are too low on my legs. As for shirts, when I reach directly forward with both arms, the large size sleeves stay at my wrists wereas medium sizes will pull back and are tighter around my back muscles.
The length of the canyoy shirt is about dress shirt long and would stay tucked in just fine. I leave mine out for hiking to over lay the canyon pants which stay skin tight and won't constantly pull down. The fabric weight, design and quality are all excellent. The long sleeves, which have roll up fasteners for hiking, are great when I make camp, especially for my anti-bug system - boots, long pants, long sleeve shirt, thin glove liners, bucket hat and no see um mesh heat cover, all treated with permethrim.
My only complaint for this shirt and for almost all large size shirts and top/shell layers is what I call "American sizing". By this I mean that these garmets could fit someone with a belly the size of a medicine ball! Since when did large men that you had to weigh at least 240lbs? Now I might be able to understand this relating to casual or even golf wear, but I can't remember seeing any of these types of guys on a 3500 foot, 10 mile hike!
Any way, it's not like we can all afford custom clothing.

I received the shirt just in time for my fishing trip on the Au Sable (Michigan). I chose the peat color for the stealth factor. It makes a perfect fishing shirt -- well thought out pockets, quick dry fabric, sleeves roll up securely, sun protection. I'm quite pleased.

Fantastic. Open mesh for armpits and along sides, along with back flap were quite helpful venting. The collar is a great feature- it has an extra hidden length that when folded up totally protect the back of one's neck. Fold up feature for sleeves was well done. All in all, excellent-made, rugged, and a perfect hiking shirt.

Solid backpack use for 3 years has led to small shoulder holes in my oldest. My newer shirts have tougher construction there. They dry quickly, reflect sun and heat, and are soft as an inner layer. They are as sharp as a military "bush jacket". I hope they keep making them so I can keep wearing them!

I had this shirt hanging in my closet for a while before I decided to take it on a back-country trip to Yosemite. I bush-whacked off-trail up the back side of Half Dome through extremely thick brush with this as my protection layer- thank God I brought it, as I would have been ripped to shreds without it. I really abused it and at the end of the hike the off-white shirt had no visible damage but was covered in stains from the bark, dirt, leaves and burned brush that I thought would never come out. Luckily, after two good washings it cleaned up like new. Even better, it has a great fit (Med, I'm 5'8", 150lb, go larger if you are bigger) and a simple "expedition" look that looks good on the street as well as on the set of "Wild Kingdom". My new favorite.

I got one for my boyfriend and he loves it. I own a sun shirt by Columbia (their high-end Titanium line), and can tell that the MH canyon shirt is far superior - dries quicker, seems to weigh less and overall the fabric has that nice feel of expensive material. I can't wait to wear off my shirt to get me one!

The MH Canyon shirt is the greatest travel shirt of all time. I have worn it in various temperature ranges from the blistering great Sahara Desert to the steamy jungles of Thailand and Cambodia and I have not one single complaint with this shirt. If you travel and don't own one, that is your mistake.

I've had two of these shirts for a summer now and I am very pleased with them. They are very comfortable, versatile, and very attractive. I'm going to Australia and New Zealand for 3 months for their summer and will more likely than not living out these shirts. This shirt is amazing. It drys quickly and is always comfortable. It is a shirt for all conditions, because you can wear the long sleves if it is cooler, yet when it is hotter you can roll them up and essentially latch them there without fear of them rolling back down during your outdoor activity of choice. The mesh is amazing and it is Mountain Hardwear, need I say more.

I really like trim fitting technical clothes. That's one of the reasons I bought the Canyon shirt. The cut seems to be made for people who are in pretty good shape. The quality is first rate with Box-X stitching in critical areas, velcro and zip pockets. One thing that really impressed me is the buttons. They seem to be made from some kind of hard rubber. I've often been frustrated by how often the typical pearl colored buttons break. The buttons on this shirt seem very durable. The other plus is that the shirt feels nice against your skin. I have not yet worn it in blistering hot weather but so far it seems to breath very well. I choose the blue color and I may also get the orange. I also own a travel shirt by Exofficio which is good, but not as dressy looking. The Canyon is my new favorite.

Just hiked Pikes Peak,CO 14110ft 8/8/04.Temperatures ranged between 60f - 75f from start of the hike to the summit and back down. This shirt was very comfortable throughout the hike. I sweated a lot at the start of hike, but the shirt dried really quick, and I never felt any chills when taking a break like I get from other shirts. The shirt is also cool looking , so much so that a girl I met on the trail actually asked about it and touched to feel the fabric. I highly recommend this shirt and the superb service from Altrec, super fast shipping and reasonable prices.

Recently, I took my Mountain Hardware shirt to Cabo San Lucas, where it helped me enjoy my time there, despite a sunburn. The shirt always looked good, kept me cool, and was easy to pack and care for. The napoleon pocket is very useful and a cool feature. The extendable collar kept the sun off my neck, although I wish it was a bit longer. I've taken the shirt hiking several times, and it does everything I want: packs small, resists wrinkling, provides comfort, dries quickly and is light weight.

Recently bought this shirt for sun and mosquito protection in the Eastern Sierras during summer. Haven't taken the trip yet, but wore the shirt on my last training hike at the North end of Lake Del Valle in Livermore, CA. Carried a 40 lb. backpack up and down the steep Del Valle Dam path 3 times. The temp was near 100 degrees but this shirt wicked and breathed like a champ. I was no hotter in it than I would've been in a cotton t shirt. I'm dead serious. Love the fit (I got a L and I,m 5' 11" 165 lbs.)and the unique collar affords extra sun protection on the back of my neck. The only reason I'm not giving this shirt 5 stars is that I don't yet know how it'll hold up over time. If it's durable, I would rate the shirt a 5 and would unhesitatingly grab another one.

Robert - 2005-05-01This is a Great Travel Shirt
I recently bought this shirt to take on a trip to Turkey where I will be on the road for several weeks. I wanted something light, that could be washed easily, dried quickly from washing or rain and offered sun protection. This shirt is all of that. On my test hikes and wearing it around town, so far it has been very comfortable keeping me cool in the heat yet warm when the cool winds blow. There are only a couple of things that I would hold against this shirt which are probably not important to anyone but me. The color is not quite what I expected. The blue is a little "weird" or off for me but may not bother anyone else. As well I was hoping it would be a little more wrinkle resistant as I will be needing to wear this for both the trail and in towns.
If neither of the above is important to you then this is a five start shirt and is truly another great Mountain Hardware product.

Great shirt, cool and dry in the summer. The only things I'm not crazy about is that the collar is somewhat big (looks a little 1970-ish to me), but it's purposely designed that way to be turned up to give protection from the sun. Also the front left pocket is "Napolean" style, which takes a little getting used to. Despite these two negatives, I liked this shirt enough to buy several of them.
