Whether you're hiking over simmering plateau rocks or backpacking through the shadows of a meandering sandstone canyon, the Mountain Hardwear Canyon Shirt provides relief and protection from searing sunlight. The Desert Cloth contains a blend of nylon and polyester fibers treated with a SPF 30 sun protection finish. These compressed fibers minimize UV penetration but unlike some tightly woven garments, the Canyon Shirt has a wicking finish to expedite moisture transfer away from your skin without that annoying clammy feeling. The proven rubber button design stays together many soapy immersions beyond the wooden and plastic buttons often found on some travel/tropical shirts.

  • Fast-drying and lightweight 3.4 oz. Desert Cloth consisting of 70% nylon/30% polyester with a 170x75 thread count
  • Fabric treated with SPF 30 sun protection and enhanced for wicking performance
  • Rugged rubber buttons down front and along cuffs
  • Cool mesh back yoke and side body panels
  • Zippered chest pocket
  • Napoleon pocket with mesh backing
  • Flip-up collar construction
  • Roll-up sleeve design with button tab
  • Weight: 10 oz. (330 g.) in large

Love this shirt
January 07, 2012

I bought this shirt for my husband and it is his "go to" shirt. It can be worn with chinos or cargos or jeans. It has great pockets and is incredibly easy to care for. I highly recommend it.

awesome shirt

The best summer hiking shirt I have ever purchased. Dries fast, feels good, moves with your body and made to last. After receiving my first shirt I purchased two more.

Excellent long-sleeved warm-weather shirt
October 27, 2005

I've had two of these shirts for a summer now and I am very pleased with them. They are very comfortable, versatile, and very attractive. I'm going to Australia and New Zealand for 3 months for their summer and will more likely than not living out these shirts. In fact, I'm wearing one of them as I right this and was complimented on it just earlier today.

Great Shirt def order again
February 02, 2011

I travel a great deal and bought this shirt because of the flexibility it gives me in such a limited packing size. I love the breathability and the fact that the shirt is dressy enough for office casual and off hours wear. Also very nice to have the flexibility of long and short sleeve in one. Had to return on first purchase because the wrong size was sent to me, but the process was a breeze!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, Cons: Cost

great fit, good looking shirt.
May 04, 2009

I bought this for my husband who's very active- He was initially hesitant about the order b/c he already has a couple shirts of a similar style but in a different brand- But, he loves the shirt. He's been wearing it every day since it arrived

Great Fishing shirt
June 04, 2008

Keeps the sun off you without being too hot, and the Napoleon pocket is big enough to hold a fly box.

Perfect fit and high quality.

I'm very large in the shoulders, and this shirt has plenty of room. I love it. The material is very light and breathable, and I live in South Florida. It works great for me.

Best Shirt Ever
April 06, 2012

Wore this shirt for the first time camping the other day and loved it. The shirt is super comfortable and drys crazy fast. Did a river crossing and it dried in less than 30 minutes. Any one that loves camping needs at least one of these.

Pros: Great design, Performance

Great Shirt
February 26, 2009

Awesome fit, light weight, can't wait to bust it out on the trail.

This is a Great Travel Shirt
May 01, 2005

I recently bought this shirt to take on a trip to Turkey where I will be on the road for several weeks. I wanted something light, that could be washed easily, dried quickly from washing or rain and offered sun protection. This shirt is all of that. On my test hikes and wearing it around town, so far it has been very comfortable keeping me cool in the heat yet warm when the cool winds blow. There are only a couple of things that I would hold against this shirt which are probably not important to anyone but me. The color is not quite what I expected. The blue is a little "weird" or off for me but may not bother anyone else. As well I was hoping it would be a little more wrinkle resistant as I will be needing to wear this for both the trail and in towns. If neither of the above is important to you then this is a five start shirt and is truly another great Mountain Hardware product.

Best all around backpacking shirt
August 21, 2009

After purchasing the MH canyon pants, which are awesome, I decided to go for the MH canyon long sleeve shirt(large). I am 5'10", 155lbs, large shirt size shoulders/chest, long back, short, 30" inseam, 34" waist. The pant size I purchased is medium/short and they fit perfectly. Almost all other mens base through outer layer shell pants have 32" or longer inseams and the articulated knees are too low on my legs. As for shirts, when I reach directly forward with both arms, the large size sleeves stay at my wrists wereas medium sizes will pull back and are tighter around my back muscles. The length of the canyoy shirt is about dress shirt long and would stay tucked in just fine. I leave mine out for hiking to over lay the canyon pants which stay skin tight and won't constantly pull down. The fabric weight, design and quality are all excellent. The long sleeves, which have roll up fasteners for hiking, are great when I make camp, especially for my anti-bug system - boots, long pants, long sleeve shirt, thin glove liners, bucket hat and no see um mesh heat cover, all treated with permethrim. My only complaint for this shirt and for almost all large size shirts and top/shell layers is what I call "American sizing". By this I mean that these garmets could fit someone with a belly the size of a medicine ball! Since when did large men that you had to weigh at least 240lbs? Now I might be able to understand this relating to casual or even golf wear, but I can't remember seeing any of these types of guys on a 3500 foot, 10 mile hike! Any way, it's not like we can all afford custom clothing. Happy trails!

Great Shirt!!!!
February 26, 2009

Construction, design, wearability-this shirt has them all! I'm just afraid to say too much or the price will go up! Seriously, I've got three of these and use them year-round. Get one, use it, love it!

Worked Great in Summertime Egypt
May 30, 2009

Fantastic. Open mesh for armpits and along sides, along with back flap were quite helpful venting. The collar is a great feature- it has an extra hidden length that when folded up totally protect the back of one's neck. Fold up feature for sleeves was well done. All in all, excellent-made, rugged, and a perfect hiking shirt.

Bit pricey but worth it
October 05, 2006

I got one for my boyfriend and he loves it. I own a sun shirt by Columbia (their high-end Titanium line), and can tell that the MH canyon shirt is far superior - dries quicker, seems to weigh less and overall the fabric has that nice feel of expensive material. I can't wait to wear off my shirt to get me one!

Ultimate Shirt for the Grand Canyon
May 29, 2009

This is the perfect shirt for rim to rim treks in the Grand Canyon. The long sleeves help with the chilly morning and the rolled up short sleeves work well for the heat of the canyon. When you're committing to a challenging trek, buy the best to make your adventure the ultimate experience.

Great Shirt for Tropics
February 15, 2012

I bought this shirt for travel to Central America, very comfortable, fabric has soft hand, and long sleeves provide necessary protection. At about 5'8" and 165 pounds the medium fit me perfectly, and its the right length to be worn outside the pants, not too long or short, which was my intended use. Construction is sound, double stitched throughout, with clean design, two low profile pockets in front (one zipped), not the ridiculous pouchlike pockets you get on some popular travel shirts. Finally, the colors on these shirts are understated and natural, so when you're traveling you blend in, a good idea in many countries.

Versatile shirt
May 25, 2011

I purchased one of these shirts, then within a week of using it I purchased two more. The shirt fits well and remains cool. When wet or washing it it dries very quickly even in humid conditions. I use it for sailing, kayaking, camping, and backpacking. It packs very small and even after being packed looks nice enough to wear out to dinner. The only con I have found is it starts to stink pretty quickly which I have found to be an issue with almost any synthetic material I wear. It does hand wash easily and dry quickly, and does not seem to retain the odor. Overall this is a great shirt for warm weather outdoor activities.

Canyon Shirt
June 23, 2011

This shirt is more comfortable in long sleeve. When the sleeves are rolled up and secured with the button strap. You may find it restricting. With the side vents, it will remain comfortable as a long sleeve.

Great Shirt
October 29, 2010

I bought two of these, one in short sleeve and one in long sleeve, for a trip to SE Asia last summer (July). It was hot & humid there and both shirts were really comfortable to wear! I especially like the long sleeve version because it was more versatile, allowing me the freedom of long sleeve for a somewhat formal ceremony and the short sleeve for general travel wear. At the time of purchasing these shirts, I tried on TNF travel shirts at a similar price point and was unimpressed with those TNF shirts. The MH fit was better (more athletic cut) whereas TNF shirts seemed "sloppy." All in all, I am extremely happy with these MH shirts and am returning to buy two more!

This is a fantastic shirt for outdoor activity... Great in the summer and not too bad in the winter with layers... If I were to complain I would like the sleeves shortened slightly and possibly a little less expensive... No other issues...

Excellent Outdoor and Travel Shirt
July 23, 2010

The shirt is lightweight, breathable, wrinkle resistant, and durable. I own at least 4. The athletic cut, and flat hem make it ideal for use in a variety of different active applications - athletic or otherwise.

October 12, 2009

Really good shirt, the only complain that I have is a stink. I really do prefer that they will add silver into it.

Fine for field or town.
May 15, 2009

Well made, bomb-proof, well ventilated, but adaptable to go to town for a casual dinner. A great and versatile purchase.

Ultimate lightweight long sleeve shirt
November 08, 2010

I own several colors of this shirt. I use them to go social partner dancing because they are light, well-vented, and dry quickly, as well as fashionable. It has a tailored look due to it's athletic fit and may seem like it fits small to some. Getting the hand through the cuff is tight and the bottom of the shirt ends around the waist/top of hips. I highly recommend these for any indoor or outdoor adventures.

Pros: Performance, Great value

Many nice features for travel and outdoor.

Great Hiking Shirt
April 28, 2006

This shirt has all the features you could want in a hiking shirt: 1. Good ventillation 2. long sleves that button up to short sleeves 3. high back collar to protect your neck from the sun

Great shirt!

This is the best nylon long-shirt I have found and I have tried many. Great travel shirt and is quick drying when wet. I wish I had a dozen more!

very light and cool(good for hiking and biking)

Tough, Comfortable All-Purpose Shirt
March 29, 2007

I had this shirt hanging in my closet for a while before I decided to take it on a back-country trip to Yosemite. I bush-whacked off-trail up the back side of Half Dome through extremely thick brush with this as my protection layer- thank God I brought it, as I would have been ripped to shreds without it. I really abused it and at the end of the hike the off-white shirt had no visible damage but was covered in stains from the bark, dirt, leaves and burned brush that I thought would never come out. Luckily, after two good washings it cleaned up like new. Even better, it has a great fit (Med, I'm 5'8", 150lb, go larger if you are bigger) and a simple "expedition" look that looks good on the street as well as on the set of "Wild Kingdom". My new favorite.

Disappointing quality
March 14, 2010

I really like the design of this shirt and the materials are great too. It fits me well and protects from the sun. It's cool and comfortable. I like the selection of colors as well. What I didn't like was the thread coming loose on two of the buttons, one on the front and another on the cuff. I wonder if Mountain Hardwear's quality is not what it used to be, or if I just got a bad one.

Tough Shirts
May 26, 2011

I purchased one before I headed to Afghanistan along with a couple of other brands. This shirt has stood up to being worn with body armour, working in 130 degree temperatures and getting washed in sinks or having the locals do the laundry. Some of the other brands are already show the wear and have lost buttons, No problem with Mountain Hardwear so I have ordered more.. They do the job.

Good Stuff
July 21, 2005

This shirt is amazing. It drys quickly and is always comfortable. It is a shirt for all conditions, because you can wear the long sleves if it is cooler, yet when it is hotter you can roll them up and essentially latch them there without fear of them rolling back down during your outdoor activity of choice. The mesh is amazing and it is Mountain Hardwear, need I say more.

February 28, 2010

Another Mountain Hardware homerun! The combination of highly functional design, state of the art fabric, color and smart styling makes this shirt a winner. No kidding, I liked it so much I bought two more.I couldn't endorse it higher.

I'm a pro fisherman, and I'm exposed to extremes of sun, wind, and water. Additionally, I travel so I don't have my own washing machine etc., handy. This shirt is rocks, I have no sun or wind burn, stay warm, and it will dry instantly. If you have to endure the elements wear this shirt. Also, it washes easy, sometimes in a bathroom sink and air dry overnight, still feels great and lasts.

Tough but comfortable
May 02, 2005

I really like trim fitting technical clothes. That's one of the reasons I bought the Canyon shirt. The cut seems to be made for people who are in pretty good shape. The quality is first rate with Box-X stitching in critical areas, velcro and zip pockets. One thing that really impressed me is the buttons. They seem to be made from some kind of hard rubber. I've often been frustrated by how often the typical pearl colored buttons break. The buttons on this shirt seem very durable. The other plus is that the shirt feels nice against your skin. I have not yet worn it in blistering hot weather but so far it seems to breath very well. I choose the blue color and I may also get the orange. I also own a travel shirt by Exofficio which is good, but not as dressy looking. The Canyon is my new favorite.

Canyon Shirt-- a Very Nice piece of clothing.
August 20, 2005

Great shirt, very light weight, well constructed, and I really like the ventilation panels. It's also very attractive to wear and has a great fit. When my wife saw mine she thought it was very nice. can 'guess' what happened next....YES I bought one for her also. She loves it. Great shirt for the 'outdoors' or for just general use.

Terrific shirt, anywhere.
May 23, 2007

Solid backpack use for 3 years has led to small shoulder holes in my oldest. My newer shirts have tougher construction there. They dry quickly, reflect sun and heat, and are soft as an inner layer. They are as sharp as a military "bush jacket". I hope they keep making them so I can keep wearing them!

Long sleeves finally!
May 14, 2009

Very comfortable shirt. I appreciate the truly long sleeves. The XXL fits my 6'2" perfectly. Excellent quality. Looking forward to camping. Glad I bought 2!

Good shirt all around.
July 28, 2004

Great shirt, cool and dry in the summer. The only things I'm not crazy about is that the collar is somewhat big (looks a little 1970-ish to me), but it's purposely designed that way to be turned up to give protection from the sun. Also the front left pocket is "Napolean" style, which takes a little getting used to. Despite these two negatives, I liked this shirt enough to buy several of them.

Great shirt for summer
August 15, 2004

Just hiked Pikes Peak,CO 14110ft 8/8/04.Temperatures ranged between 60f - 75f from start of the hike to the summit and back down. This shirt was very comfortable throughout the hike. I sweated a lot at the start of hike, but the shirt dried really quick, and I never felt any chills when taking a break like I get from other shirts. The shirt is also cool looking , so much so that a girl I met on the trail actually asked about it and touched to feel the fabric. I highly recommend this shirt and the superb service from Altrec, super fast shipping and reasonable prices.

Great field shirt
June 26, 2009

I received the shirt just in time for my fishing trip on the Au Sable (Michigan). I chose the peat color for the stealth factor. It makes a perfect fishing shirt -- well thought out pockets, quick dry fabric, sleeves roll up securely, sun protection. I'm quite pleased.

January 22, 2010

Heading off to Burma next month, I needed to shoot 2 days in jungle-environment arboretum near NYC before my departure. i wanted to try some high-tech clothing, and as a test for my Burma trip, I ordered a long sleeve Canyon Shirt. With all the activity required in the arboretum(setting up shots---lights and 35mm camera equipment), the heat and humidity were immediately uncomfortable. At least for my assistants, they were down to t-shirts. But I was pleased to note my Canyon Shirt breathing/wicking and working as advertised. After a couple of days in that joint, washing the shirt overnight, it was a worthwhile and successful test. I liked the Safari color even more than as shown online, and the fit could not have been better. I am 5'9", 140 pounds, and I ordered the Small. The shirt is well put together and I think it can handle long days in the heat and bugs(I like that collar extension!), even when I'm lugging a backpack full of 35mm equipment and a tripod. I'm ordering a second one.

Terrific shirt.
July 15, 2009

Recently bought this shirt for sun and mosquito protection in the Eastern Sierras during summer. Haven't taken the trip yet, but wore the shirt on my last training hike at the North end of Lake Del Valle in Livermore, CA. Carried a 40 lb. backpack up and down the steep Del Valle Dam path 3 times. The temp was near 100 degrees but this shirt wicked and breathed like a champ. I was no hotter in it than I would've been in a cotton t shirt. I'm dead serious. Love the fit (I got a L and I,m 5' 11" 165 lbs.)and the unique collar affords extra sun protection on the back of my neck. The only reason I'm not giving this shirt 5 stars is that I don't yet know how it'll hold up over time. If it's durable, I would rate the shirt a 5 and would unhesitatingly grab another one.

Versatile, Great Fitting Shirt
January 26, 2010

This is by far my favorite shirt. I use it when I go backpacking as well as just around town. I also enjoyed having it when I was traveling abroad because it looks good (can pass for a nice shirt), doesn't hold wrinkles, and the pockets are great for holding "precious cargo" (ie passport and cash) close at hand but out of your pockets. It is very breathable and quick drying. I have always enjoyed wearing this shirt no matter the occasion or weather.

August 02, 2004

Perfect for river running in the blazing hot Southwest sun or as a summer backpack layer. Dries real quick. My girlfriend was so envious of it she's getting one for her birthday.

Love this shirt!
October 22, 2009

I use these for hiking and backpacking. I've tried various brands for this type of shirt, and ultimately this is my favorite. The material weight is just right; durable but lightweight, and it dries quickly. It features an athletic cut meaning it doesn't bunch up too much under the arms or around the waste. Lots of vents including the pockets, and the Napoleon pocket is easily accessible while wearing a pack. Colors seem to change often so if you have a favorite color grab a couple extra.

excellent choice.

The MH Canyon shirt is the greatest travel shirt of all time. I have worn it in various temperature ranges from the blistering great Sahara Desert to the steamy jungles of Thailand and Cambodia and I have not one single complaint with this shirt. If you travel and don't own one, that is your mistake.

A slightly athletic fit
April 08, 2010

At 5'11" and 203# - 44" chest and 36" waist x 32" inseam being my typical shopping parameters - I often find myself inbetween large and x-large sizing. I do prefer a looser fit. All said, I sent back the large canyon shirt and kept the x-large that I ordered at the same time. I only ordered the Mesa and Matterhorn pants in x-large size but believe I would have had the same problem with the pants as the shirt had I ordered large. As previously mentioned the pants are long but since I plan to wear them underneath armored motorcycle pants - that is with knees bent - that isn't bad.

Recently, I took my Mountain Hardware shirt to Cabo San Lucas, where it helped me enjoy my time there, despite a sunburn. The shirt always looked good, kept me cool, and was easy to pack and care for. The napoleon pocket is very useful and a cool feature. The extendable collar kept the sun off my neck, although I wish it was a bit longer. I've taken the shirt hiking several times, and it does everything I want: packs small, resists wrinkling, provides comfort, dries quickly and is light weight.

Great shirt, great color!

Nice shirt!

Nice shirt for working and playing outside. Stays cool in hot weather and looks good enough to wear to a meeting, dries quickly when handwashing at the motel with minimal wrinkles after hanging to dry. As others have said, the pockets are handy and well-designed and seams don't interfere with pack straps. I only gave 4 stars because it's a bit short in length in the body (I have a longish torso for my height) and a Tall size would be nice. Also, when they say "athletic fit" they mean it, so if in doubt go up a size (XXL feels more like an XL.5 to me, but it still fits nicely in the shoulders and chest so it's all good). Overall, a nice product.

Terrific hiking shirt

The light nylon fabric is cool and comfortable. The mesh inserts under the arms and in the back cape provide ventilation when you are working up a sweat. The flip up collar keeps the sun off of your neck. Quality construction and good fit. I will be ordering more.

My new favourite long sleeve shirt.

My new favorite long sleeve shirt. I like the two pockets. One zips for security the other has a side opening with velcro which is useful for glasses.Altrec is an easy and efficient company to deal with. I bought three more.

This is a great shirt for being in the sun, or out on the town. I live in the southwest and use this shirt when I'm working outside, or hiking in the 100+ heat.

great shirt!

I use it for hiking and traveling especially overseas. The material is light but tough enough to be durable. The pockets come in handy too!
