Best convertible pants
January 25, 2012

I have tried a number of different convertible pants by diferent manufacturers. These are the best by far. They are very well made and comfortable. I am 5'11" and weigh 165 lbs. The medium std length fit perfectly. I have been a fan of Mountain Hardware products for years and these pants are another example of a well thought out, well designed quality product. I would recomend them to everyone.

These Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pants are great. The updated model for 2011 fits much better than the 2010 model. The reason is the 2011 has a web belt and hold your waist better, also the fit in the hips is much better. I own both years and when went on my 15 mile outings up and down ridges they prove best for these 2011 Mountain hardwear Matterhorn Pants.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, better fit

High quality material and construction. Plenty of pocket space. Leg zippers that allow you to remove pant legs with shoes on is a nice touch. The only major downside is the pants run slightly large.

M.H. Matterhorns are Tough
July 25, 2011

Good solid pants - well designed and tough! The trade off is they are heavy - was hoping they would be more like the Canmore pant now discontinued in terms of weight. But on the flip side they are a more rugged pant. Great for backpacking with the high boot zipps too! A bit spendy but probably priced for what you get.

Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Pants
July 19, 2011

Mountain Hardwear delivers another fine quality product. The Matterhorn pants are extremely comfortable and the material is very durable and well designed. In particular, the front and rear pockets provide easy access. Lastly, the Mattrhorn pants look great and I can convert from pants to shorts easily during a hike.

May 20, 2011

Great convertible pant. I've worn several pairs of the North Face Paramount Pant in the past, but these fit better and are made better. They're not as baggy as the Paramount and I like the external pockets more to the side than on the front of the pant as on the Paramount. I ordered the 30 in. inseam and found them plenty long enough (I'm normally a 31 inseam for pants). The 32's were way too long. More expensive than the Paramount but worth it!

Comfy and durable
May 03, 2011

These hiking pants are great. The chamois lined waist makes sure the backpack doesn't rub against the waistline and leave friction marks. Enough side pockets and roomy front pocket. Over all got a great deal on it..... Love mountain hardware stuff it's always great quality and reasonable price for that quality

Great product, try on first!
April 06, 2011

These pants are at the high end of the price range and everything about them fits the price. Well designed, comfortable, plenty of pockets, good zip-off design, and good short length. HOWEVER, their sizing needs some work. I can buy a 34" waist, almost without fail, and things will fit within reason. MH suggests a size medium and these are pretty tight to the point I tried on a Large since who wants to be in tight pants when hiking. Unfortunately, the Large are gigantic! They must be made for a 38" waist and are super baggy. The inseam length is near on though. Expensive, yes, but one pair of good pants can last through many, many years.

Very comfortable pants!
March 18, 2011

This hiking pants is true to its size, it fits me perfectly. It is very stretchy and extremely light weight. After I put this pants on, I almost feel no weight at all. One downside from this is probably it won't give me too much protection when I am walking in the bushes. It also not a good winter hiking pants however I guess this is not what it was designed to do anyway. It also drys very fast! Overall, I think this is a great hiking pants for you to walk in the desert or other areas where protection from the trees and bushes is not a big concern.

Great Pant
March 14, 2011

These pants have it all. Comfortable, yet durable, high quality material. Feels great on and handles abuse well. Got the med long and they fit perfect. I am 6'3' 170 lbs and usually have trouble finding a good fit, but these hit the mark. The otter color is a great greenish brown color. All the accessories (belt, buttons, zippers, etc) are good quality and hold up well.

Finally a nice convertible pant
January 23, 2011

These are a nice mid-weight nylon pant that have more of a chamois/fabric feel than an nylon feel. The we're well designed with articulation and gussets where you need them for hiking and backpacking. The pant belt is hidden under the waist of pant which is nice for backpacks hip belt, so it does not snag. Pockets are not as plentiful as some other pants, but then again I don't plan on carrying around $200 in change in my pockets, so the pockets it does have are plenty good enough for my iphone, wallet, keys, pocket knife, some bug spray, a digital camera, etc. What else do you need to carry in your pockets? Shorts are nice and long, with 11" as shorts, at 5'6" and a 30" inseam these shorts go to my knee caps, which I like. The material keeps you a bit warmer than most convertibles, and it seems like these will last a long time. If you backpack alot get the darker colors as they don't looks soo nasty after a few ways in the woods. Yes front pockets are shallower than most, but my iphone and wallet fit in them fine with nothing hanging out and still sunk in the pocket an 1.5" or more past the top of the pocket. Only concern is the waist button/snap seems a bit weak, but so far it holds up fine, just feels a bit weaker than I am used to. If you want one pair of bottoms that do it all hike, backpack, camp in mild to hot (i'd say 45-100+ F) weather than these will fit the bill. Only really cold temperatures would push their limits, but then again you could just pair them up with some thermals and be good to go. On the best multi=purpose backcountry items in my arsenal.

Comfort: 2 / 5

Performs as advertised.. with some design issues
January 09, 2011

Pros: These convertible pants perform as advertised: Water resistant & acceptable wind resistance. Feels very durable. Good winter pants. Nice pocket design. Cons: The belt that comes with the pants can be easily unfastened. A simple act of lifting up the waist can sometimes undo the belt. I wish there were belt loops instead so I can use my own belt. (Though, I suppose that one could just fish another belt through.) Nylon pants are already a bit noisy. But the weight of these makes it very loud. You definitely won't be sneaking up on anyone wearing these. Also, if you have the ankle snaps unbuttoned, the the snaps tap against each other while while walking. (I imagine that could be very annoying for some.) The selling point for me were the reviews stating how "comfortable" they were. However, this wasn't the case for me. These pants feel exactly like what they are: Heavy but sturdy, DWR pants. They're not as comfortable, say, lounging around the house with, though. (In comparison, I have a pair of Columbia, non DWR, 9 ounce nylon convertibles that I lounge around with all the time.) Other notes: These pants have a relaxed fit. The sizing seems true. I'm 5'8" with a 32" waist & medium fits me acceptably (though a bit on the baggy side). Also, I've only worn these a couple times on light winter hikes (30 degree temps) so I have no idea how these will feel during summer.

Matterhorn is great
January 02, 2011

I have a lot of different Hardwear items. I am pretty tough on them as I spend all my time outside in the elements. The Matterhorn has been my choice during the cooler weather for a couple of years. These are too warm for desert dwelling in the summer, but the cooler fall and winter temps these are the ticket. Even in higher Alpine settings a good base layer under the Matterhorn will keep you warm (without wind). Sizing is good and true to Mtn Hardwear sizing. Construction is some of the best that I have ever seen. These will last a long long time. These are like the Mesa Pants with much thicker material. My favorite feature is the drawcord ankle cuffs....with a zipper and a snap. They will stay over your boots where you want them.

BOMBPROOF!
December 07, 2010

I own many different MHW pants. I tend to prefer ones stretchy softshells, but the Matterhorn has quickly become one of my favorites. There has been great thought put into the details and stitching of this convertible. The fabric is thicker than that of the Mesa, but it keeps me plenty cool as a pair of shorts. Fit and movement are perfect for a pant which does not stretch. I wish MHW made a non-convertible version of this pant because I would buy it.

nice multi-use gear that works great
December 06, 2010

As an owner of two pairs of the Matterhorn shorts (first pair I wore on a trip hiking around the Alps and the real Matterhorn!) - I wanted to try the full length pants. Similar make and material, but I like the fit of the real shorts a bit better than the converted shorts. May have to do with the cut/fit around zippers but nto a big issue. To travel light its great to have multi-purpose gear and this is a good one to add to the collection! Add one of their button down shirts and you can go from Trail to Bistro for dinner without changing! Tom

Great Pants!
December 05, 2010

Very durable pants. They are great for hiking with a pack. I love the fact that I can access the rear pockets easily when I was carrying my 2 year old son in a backpack. They sit lower on my rear end making access a breeze. The side pockets are OK. Gear ends up on the front of your leg instead of on the side as in a cargo pocket. They are also great for just wearing around the house and doing odd jobs as there plenty of pockets. The leg side zippers are nice and long making it easier to slip over boots.

Great pants!
September 09, 2010

I wore this pair of pants for a few days and a day into the woods. It's great because it's very durable. Went through a trail with a lot of bushes but not a scratch on the pants. The pants also dry pretty quickly (maybe 3 hours in the sunny 80 degrees weather) after I got it wet during a river crossing. The pockets are nice because two of them have zippers to prevent my keys and etc from falling out. The only thing I don't like about it is the weight. It's a bit on the heavy side. All in all, great pants. You can also consider the Mesa instead of this one if weight is an issue for you.

Great Pants!
September 06, 2010

I got these because they come in different lengths. I wear 35x30 pants and got the Large/Short size. They aren't cheap but they are well made and the various sizes are great.

Great pair of pants
August 29, 2010

I have a pair of Matterhorn and Mesa pants and much prefer the Matterhorn. They have more features, namely the calf zips that make taking the pant portion off and on a cinch. They are also made of heavier weight material compared to the Mesa's making them a bit more durable. I would recommend them if you are looking for a quality backpacking pant.

As advertised & better than most
July 27, 2010

These are similar to most zip-leg pants, but of much sturdier (and heavier) construction.

happy so far
June 20, 2010

The key items that I was looking for were zip-off legs and cinching the ankles. These pants fit the bill better than some at ll bean. My wife likes the look of them. With respect to deciding between these and the mesa: These are not as light weight as the mesa convertible pants. The pockets are slightly different.

Great Pants
June 10, 2010

1 week on the Appalachian trail and these pants rocked. Got them soaking wet one day around noon, and 2 hours later they were bone dry. If you are looking for a great pant, look no further.

Great versatile backpacking and hiking pants.
May 25, 2010

These Matterhorn pants are really amazing pants/shorts. They are super versatile, comfortable and feel like they could take a beating. Only complaints are not sure if I like the attached belt yet, as opposed to using my own. It feels a little too weighty at times, and also the cut could be a bit less "full". But I do dig them and have yet to see another convertible pant of this quality.
