Men's Mesa Convertible Pants 4.4 5 26 26
COMFORTABLE, great fit IF you are shorter person with normal legs, i think great fit. i have 36 waist 32 inseam. most styles of pants run a tad long, but not the mountain hardware. January 28, 2012
Solid Hiking Pants Love the new leg hem zipper - so much better than previous years. Love the long inseam on zip off short, I'm 6'4" and the shorts hit just above my knee. The new pocket designs are excellent and the relaxed fit/long length is perfect. Can't go wrong with these pants! January 17, 2012
Not for long legs Im 6'4" and the zippers for the convertable shorts lay directly across my kneecaps and slide up and snap back down the top of my knee with each step. Very uncomfortable to wear. Otherwise the fit and quality was great. Very nice heavy construction at the waist. Still I had to return these for the chafing across my knees. January 8, 2012
Nice pants if you need convertibles The Mesa Convertible Pants are a good quality product, offering good versatility for anyone who wants to travel or hike with just a single pair of pants/shorts. The only negatives are that they look a little less like regular pants and are a few ounces heavier than non-convertibles due to the extra zippers. December 10, 2011
Mesa Convertible Pants Never purchased before but have several friends who wore them. Perfect fit, durable and awesome build quality. Although they are pricey they are worth every penny. Six foot, 190 pounds and 34 inch waist and the medium fit perfectly. The legs have a zip that goes up almost to the knee and a button down at the bottom to secure the leg. A little zip pocket on the right thigh and two spacious rear pockets as well as the regular front two pockets work very well for carrying random stuff. Very comfortable pants and ruggage as well. Exactly what I needed. November 15, 2011
Purchased these several months ago. Fit is decent in the legs for me (6'4" 190#) in large/long size. The waist could possibly use some elastic, as there is a bit of "cinching" required to keep the waist from riding too low. But not a deal breaker. The waistline is comfortable. Other wishes: slightly larger zipper pulls, and slightly smaller logos. I like that the the shorts inseam is longer than other convertibles I have tried. October 23, 2011
Great pants I like these very comfortable pants. It's well made and the quality of the materials stands out for me. It also feels very durable. It wicks sweat well on a hike in the rain forest. Only gripe is that it ran a little large for me. October 14, 2011
Killer convertables I wore these pants for the first time on the appalachian trail in new Hampshire. I spent three days in the same pants zipping and unzipping them as they weather changed. They held up well and were very comfortable. They stretched well with movement and dried out quickly. Great product for the price. I would by them all over again. October 10, 2011
My brother-in-law introduced me to the Mesa Convertible pants and I loved them the first time I put them on. I find it somewhat hard to find pants that fit comfortably all day since I have a larger than average lower body; pant seats and thighs are the deciding factor for me. Quality seems to be excellent. I couldn't give it 5 stars for durability yet since I've only had them for a short time, but I doubt that it'd be lacking. I chose this pair of pants over the convertible Matterhorn pants because of the more comfortable lightweight material. September 12, 2011
Mesa pants hits me wrong Love the overall tailoring and fabric of thes pants BUT for my height 5'11" and inseam 32" the connection between theshot part and the rest of the pants hits my knee and chafes when I walk. September 3, 2011
These pants are the best..... I did exchange the belt with one of my own. After clipping a few stitches, this proved to be pretty easy and makes the pants one of the most comfortable, "go-to" pair of pants I own. I really like the convertibility and the fabric is very light but strong. They look good and feel great on. What more could you ask? Cannot rate the durability yet, but so far so good. August 6, 2011
Solid pants Took two pairs of these pants to the Quetico for a week this summer and both held up very well. I was getting them completely soaked every day, and they would dry extremely fast. We were also daily scrambling over rocks and walking through dense foliage and I had zero tears in the pants fabric. I found the zip-off features easy to work with and as a huge plus, the shorts actually look like a normal pair once you zip the legs off. I had multiple people compliment the look of the shorts, although that was not why I purchased them. The fit is great, although I would encourage buyers to pay attention to the sizing chart to ensure you get the correct length. Overall, I was impressed as to how they held over an intense week of wet conditions. I would definitely purchase these again and fully intend to get significant use out of them. August 1, 2011
I like these pants. These are the second pair of convertible pants I've owned. The first were a super light-weight material that left me feeling a bit "naked". Especially when hiking through less then well kept trails. The Mesa Convertible are what I would call medium weight. That is, they're not the weight of full-on cotton trousers, but not like the parachute silk of the other brand I own. And personally, I prefer a heavier pants when going into the back country. As for the rest, I'm not crazy about cinch belts, but the snap release buckle makes it work, though it seems a bit flimsy. I'm a little weary of it lasting. Otherwise, to date, the legs zip on and off easy enough and the rest of the overall workmanship, comfort and design made it an excellent purchase for my needs. July 4, 2011
What I like most about these pants other than them being convertible are that the shorts aren't too short when you take the legs off! Another great feature is the built in belt and the legs have zippers up the side so you don't have to take your boots or shoes off to remove the legs. You can tell these are well made just like everything else I have purchased from Mountain Hardwear! July 1, 2011
Used to like the Mesa pants I bought these pants because I have several pair of Mesa convertible pants, love them and wanted another pair. Unbeknownst to me, Mountain Hardwear totally changed the style, fit and features. They fit at least an inch and a half larger in the waist than my other Mesa pants. I had to cinch the belt up to the point of the fabric bunching up. The fabric in the waistband reminds me of the Matterhorn pants, which incidentally, fit larger in the waist than the old Mesa pants as well. The cargo pockets on the front have been removed and the front pockets don't feel as secure as the old Mesa pants. They also removed the elastic cinch cord around the bottom of the pants leg. The one thing I like better on this new style is the belt. Bottom line is that I do not like this new style as well as the old and they definitely don't fit like the old style. I should have researched more prior to my purchase. Lesson learned. June 30, 2011
All around pant/short The articulated seems make the zippered areas feel seemless. To allow full enjoyment as a pair of shorts. I also find the soft lining in the crotch and along the backside of the waist, to be very comforting. I feel like I have purchased a custom pair of pants/shorts!. June 25, 2011
nice and lite These are great pants. Very lite and durable. They do run alittle small and if your short like me at 5'7" the short version length fits great. has adjustable belt built in and no belt loops . zip off legs are great. June 18, 2011
Awesome pants! I've worn these on a few hikes now. They are very lightweight, yet they feel durable and shed water and mud great. I even wear them as shorts in everyday situations because they are so comfortable. June 3, 2011
Another great Mountain Hardware product! I have purchased these pants and the normal Mesa non convertible pants. I can't tell the difference in fit or appearance other than the zipper lines- so if you think you may be in a situation where the temperature changes on your outing- these are a no brainer. I am a pro outdoor videographer and I use my gear in all kinds of situations and environments. The pockets are great for throwing a lens cap or any other small device in without bogging you down. Mountain Hardware is one of the best in my opinion. The quality is evident as soon as you open the package. Well made, great fit, looks nice too. May 27, 2011
I purchased these pants recently and they have turned out to be great! The material breaths great and is really comfortable. The snaps at the bottom are great for pulling them over boots. Fit was true to size for me. I ordered the long and am 6'3" and they are just long enough without being too baggy. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a nice lightweight backpacking pant. May 4, 2011
Multiple Climate Pants I just spent several days on a backpacking trip in the Great Smoky Mountains N.P. We began our trip at 2200ft and a temp. of 76 so I began in full pants. After 2 miles uphill I decided to remove the leg bottoms in anticipation of it getting warmer as we climbed. With the lower leg zippers, the pants slid off my legs without a hitch over my backpacking boots... a great upgrade to the Mesa's. The Mesa's also evaporated moisture from my skin like a champ preventing any chaffing whatsoever. At 4 miles up the trail and more than a mile high we reached the A.T. and the once 76* temperature had dropped to 53* with plenty of wind. I had the legs back on the pants, over the boots and zipped around my leg in under a minute. Had I been in either shorts or pants, the first day of my trip would have been miserable... The Mesa's saved the day. May 1, 2011
Good..but not for me. I was planning to use these for rock climbing. I ordered these specifically because the description said they had drawcord cuffs. They do not. It seems Altrec has corrected this in their description so that is good. But unfortunately for me they are missing the one feature I was looking for :( The pants seem well made. And if they fit you are probably fantastic. They do seem to be cut for tall thin folks. I ordered the short inseam and they are still a tad long. Too bad, I really wanted to love these. April 15, 2011
Best convertible pant out there I have many pairs of convertible nylon pants and these have out performed many other major brands. Just wish i tried these first because i only want to wear these now insted of tnf and even marmot. April 12, 2011
Great pant for the average build Purchased this pant primarily for spring/fall hiking as mountain hardwear products are always great quality and typically stylin. The material on these pants are relatively thin and are not the most comfortable against your skin but this was to be expected from lightweight hiking pants/converts. I really like the pants and my only complaint would be the goofy cargo pockets which kind of make you look a little silly at the bar after a nice day hike. I have larger legs than most and the men's size 32 waist allowed for plenty of waist room but not enough in the butt and thighs for them to be comfortable scrambling and climbing. This of course may not apply to most but for those of us with slightly larger builds a different brand or pant would probably be more appropriate. Also, the 32 inseam some buyers may find is a bit long as I did even tho the same inseam in other brands is nearly spot on (ie arcteryx, outdoor research). Verdict: Am going to swap these bad boys out for a pair of arcteryx, also from Altrec, as they fit a bit more loose in the thigh/butt. Defnitely a recommended pant for those of us who have legs with a smaller in the thigh/hamstring and ultimately glutes: i'm just not that guy! April 11, 2011
Very well thoughtout I have purchased a lot of different kinds of hiking pants, but none of them compared to Mountain Hardware's Convertible Mesa pant. The design is very well thought out, with soft lining along the waistline, good zipper placement on the legs, easily accessible pockets and great build quality. They also offer better size options then other companies, like 34" inseams that they have in stock. I highly recommend these pants to anyone who hikes in areas that you may need pants in the morning but shorts in the afternoon. April 11, 2011
Great pair of convertible pants Very comfortable and functional pair of pants. I like the option of wearing pants or shorts depending on the weather. I have worn them on a few backpacking trips but already i notice a difference in quality and comfort compared to other pairs i have owned. I an 6'2" and i opted for the "long" length. They fit well over a pair of boots or the vibram five fingers i wear on shorter or water trips. i like the length of the zippers on the legs, it makes putting wet and muddy boots on easier. I originally purchased these as a replacement for a pair of hiking pants that became two sizes larger when they got wet. This was a problem canoeing in the boundary waters, and hiking slot canyons. I haven't had the same problem with these pair. They keep their shape and hold up when wet or dirty. These are the only pair of convertible hiking pants that i would purchase again. March 31, 2011
