Tough Jacket

I have two of these jackets for over two years now. One for work and one for play and around town use. I have put the work one through some tough times and it is still holding up great! The wind resistant fleece is awesome! I am 5' 9" 180lbs and the medium fits me perfect. Although a couple inches more in lenght wouldn't hurt. Other than than that I have no complaints.

This jacket works well for those backpacking trips when weather is cool, misty, and even windy. A light t shirt or even a light to mid weight thermal is enough to keep you warm without the bulk and allows movement without the binding. The jacket also has zippers in the arms to allow heat to escape. Pockets are located in a position that allow access with the pack on. I highly recommend.

I originally bought my guy a jacket from another company - he complained about it being too warm, too bulky, NOT waterproof, etc. This AWESOME jacket from Mountain Hardwear was a TOTAL WIN!!! I chose the gray/black color. It looks great, it's warm, waterproof, wind-proof, but still has those pit-vents to prevent overheating (I like the fact that the jacket fits perfectly, and he looks super *hot*). WIN-WIN!!

I probably own about 8 different mid-layer zip up jackets of this type. However, this jacket is by far my new favorite. With a single layer underneath this jacket, I was comfortable in 40+ mph winds with temperatures in the low teens. Then I could immediately get back in my truck, or go inside and be comfortable at room temperatures by simply unzipping the underarm vents. I love everything about this jacket and just hope it remains durable because I find myself wearing it constantly.

This has replaced a 4 year old MHW soft shell as my go-to jacket. I find it comfortable anywhere from taking the chill off of an inactive 60 degree evening down to a brisk walk in the upper 30's. It breaths great (much better than the soft shell), even without using the large pit zips. It also cuts the wind quite well, a great combination. The fabric feels great, inside and out. I'm a relatively slim built 6ft 2inches and about 185 pounds and a large fits me well. The length is perfect and there is enough room for a light layer underneath (e.g. fleece shirt) but a heavy sweater would be a little tight. No hesitation in recommending this jacket.

I love this jacket! I bought one six years ago, and it is still great though starting to look a little worn. I just bought another one because I'm afraid they will stop making them! I use it for alpine skiing, XC skiing, bicycle commuting, mountaineering, and just around town. This jacket is bomber windproof - on all but stormy or extremely cold days it is my outer shell for alpine skiing. Can't say enough about this product. Fits great, sleeves are plenty long for my long arms, well made, looks great, and performs well.

Excellent near all purpose jacket

I bought this jacket last fall based upon the excellent reviews. The jacket could not possibly be better. I don't think I ventured outside from November through March without this jacket on. It works for nearly all situations. Anywhere from 60 degrees down to about 30. Incredibly comfortable and well made. I've recommended this jacket to many people.

I bought this fleece for both backpacking and daily use. It is extremely light and warm. It does an excellent job at stopping the wind on top of a mountain or earlier morning breezes in the city. It is comfortable wearing a backpack and just wearing on the go. The sleeves are really good for people like me that have longer arms. I have not had very long and really put it to some tests through wind and light rain. All in all its just a great product and I highly recommend it as a great all around fleece.

The climate in the Smoky Mountains offers a lot of wind and when I saw a Mountain Hardwear Windstopper jacket I had to give it a shot. The jacket performs flawlessly. It really does block wind... heavy wind. It's not insulated yet the fit is so that a normal size offers enough room to layer and not feel bulky. I've worn the jacket on steep terrain in the spring when temperatures are warming up and it breathes amazingly... my shirt never got damp. This is a terrific 3 season jacket from a reputable company and I highly recommend it.

Best All Around Fleece You Can Buy

I bought this jacket about two years ago, and it has been great. It is different from a typical fleece in that NO wind can get through this thing. This is a great wind-breaking fleece. As for warmth, given that it is not designed to be specifically an insulating layer, it isn't all that warm. The main warmth it provides is taking out any wind chill there might be. Overall I am very pleased with this jacket, Mountain Hardwear makes great stuff.

I bought this for my husband, whose fleece(s) were aging and not doing the trick any longer. What I/he love about it: it's warm, windstopping, non-pilling, has great features (such as pit zips) and is perfect for the backcountry or casual in the city. The charcoal/black is very stylish. I can forsee this being around for a good 20 years...

Great 3 season, and layer for 4th. I live in tundra of Summit Co Colorado-9300 feet. Cold here all year, cept for July 4th. (and the low then will probably be in the 30's) I bought a size large as i like to layer a vest underneath. works great.

I purchased this jacket, together with the Men's Cordoba Pants and Micro Dome Beanie, for my husband, who is a loyal Mountain Hardware customer for decades now--ever since he started mountaineering! He is such a believer of this brand. It made me want to surprise him with this as a gift. He loves the Windstopper Tech Jacket! He wore it outside when mowing the lawn, going to the park with our baby daughter, spending time with me at the mall or hiking in his favorite trails here/around San Antonio. He says it keeps him warm without the bulk, and it makes him fashionable enough to walk with me. :) Best gift ever. Thank you Altrec for selling this product!

That's right. I love this Windstopper model (2009) so much I panicked when I learned that MH came out with an update. So I bought one more in addition to the two that I'm already using regularly. I have one sapphire and two black. I bought the second black one at 50% discount on this site. I realized later on it was their absolute last 2009 MH Windstopper on Altrec. It's a great sweater for any season and provides excellent protection when there's worse than a breeze blowing around you. You can be sure you won't feel the chill that your face or ungloved hands are feelng. Or if you're hot from hiking and do need a cool down, all you do is open up the pit zip, which works like a charm. I am so impressed with the pit zip feature that it's pretty much a deal breaker when any sweater I'm considering adding to my closet doesn't have it. On really cold wintry conditions, I'd layer one of my 800-fill down sweaters over it and I'm good to go. Or I put a waterproof shell on. On a hike over the boondocks at the Harriman State Park in NY state last winter, that's exactly what I did. The TNF shell also has a pit zip, so with both that and the sweater's pit zips open, I never overheated. I know I would enjoy my MH's for years and years to come. It's styled so will never go out of style; it looks great with hiking pants or plain jeans for a stroll about town. I would consider the updated version (which looks to me more like a softshell, btw) someday maybe. I'll probably partially finance that purchase by selling my newish TNF Windwall, which doesn't have pit zips and which I regret buying.

Pit zips allow this to be used for a huge range of temperatures. Fits 5'10", 145 lb person perfectly. Haven't owned this jacket long enough to vouch for durability, but as MHW product, I expect it to last many years. Initial build quality is great. Only gripe with the jacket is the two lower pockets are awkwardly placed to be used as handwarmers. Very minor, but worth noting.

I love this jacket. I have a vest, and bought this for my boyfriend as an all-around winter jacket - for outdoor activities and for when we go out on the weekends/at night. It has a great look, is light weight, is not bulky, has room for layers and provides great wind protection.

I'm 150 lbs, 5'7, 30 inch belt wide. The very best of windstoppers out of all major brands, I found M size fitted me best. Useing it for trips to work, shopping and light strolls is just fine. This is a "go to" jacket for a cool weather as a thermal layer in moderate winters. The MHW Windstapper fabric performs true to its name, while the heavier panels on the shoulders and sleeves shed light to moderate persipitation well. The only down point of this jacket is the lack of lasting elasticity at the sleeves, a velcro cuff adjustment would make this jacket a perfect 10 out of 10. Thank You Altrec for Great Service

Really good jacket perfect fit, the only thing is that MH is a size smaller than northface for example just for a reference. The wind protection is insane. Rain repellent. What i like the most is that you feel like you are not wearing nothing when you are climbing or trekking

Love the jacket, but don't buy the red

I marked this jacket down on quality due to the use of black/dark thread that stands out like a sore thumb around the lower zipper area. Bought it for my teenage son (6'1"). He had outgrown his last one and red was last color in large. Bought the new model in gray/black and love it (although he misses the inside pocket in the new one) Now for the good news. This jacket and the new version that replace it are phenomenal performers with AWESOME durability. He wore the old jacket fall/winter spring for 3 years and it still looked great. Hiking, camping, skiing, school, you name it. Only mark on it is where a burning ember landed on his shoulder - and even that doesn't stick out on the gray/black. I expect #2 son to get as much mileage out of the original medium without it looking like a hand-me-down. These jackets are bomb-proof. Expensive, but worth it.

Boxy... great for layering

This is a great jacket... wind resistant and fits loose enough to wear with layers. The fit is a little boxy, so for true sporting activities, it might be a bit too loose. That said, I love this jacket for moderate Fall into early Winter weather conditions. Also great late Winter into Spring. When the temps really drop I like to go to down, or layers with a shell. Look is good, and like all Mountain Hardware stuff, build quality is excellent!

Arm (width) and body (width) is a little roomier than other MH jackets, but quite comfortable over a down insulating vest. Really windproof for how light the jacket feels. Although wrist cuffs are somewhat large and allow wind up the sleeves,,, if your base layer is long sleeved and you have mittens, you're good to go. The technical fleece is more durable and water resistent than expected which was a major plus given the abuse it took in the unexpected downpour! Overall I would buy again, just maybe would size down next time. Wish it had a hood.

I read countless reviews and compared many fleece jackets before I settled on this jacket. PROS- This is a quality fleece jacket. Very durable with windstopper panels in all the right areas. Highly breathable, excellent breathe-ability!! with pit vents for when you need the extra ventilation. I found myself grabbing this jacket almost every day during the fall spring and winter months. It is that versatile. Great Athletic trim fit. I used this jacket for 2 years before it got stolen!!! The jacket went through about 12 washes and had been used for many activities. The fleece did not show any signs of pilling at all! Very durable! CONS- When using it for casual purposes it is not very warm. I would not recommend this for temps under 35 degrees if your going to be lounging around outside. If your going to be doing some kind of activity this will keep you warm in temps of down to 27 degrees. Overall very nice jacket. I would buy again if i had a warmer fleece for when the temps drop but, im looking for 1 jacket that will do what this jacket did except 1 level warmer. Perhaps a softshell is in my future. My Stats- 5'-10" 150lb, I had a small but should've gotten a medium Activities I used this jacket for- Mountain Biking, climbling, chillin', snowboarding, running.

Used it for the first time in mid May at the Grand Canyon, and I was not complaining about the price on those cold mornings as it kept me comfortably warm while hiking down the canyon. Well worth it, highly recommended!!!

My new favorite jacket

I waited a long time for the perfect jacket to replace my aging NorthFace fleece. This totally fills the bill - comfortable under a wide range of conditions, even my winter bicycle commute. Totally windproof yet highly breathable. Very stylish as well (I get compliments). I simply love this jacket. 4/5 stars for comfort mostly because the body could be a tad less baggy (I'm fairly slim).

Favorite Jacket

I love this jacket, I wear it all the time in a variety of temperatures. It is comfortable from 35-40 degrees if active up to 65 degrees with pit zips open. So nice to have one jacket that can be used in so many situations. I've had mine for years and it is still going strong and looking good!

I own 4 different colors of this lightweight and very warm jacket. However, I wear this jacket 3 seasons of the year in New Jersey. In winter I sometimes put a fleece jacket under it, but only if I'm outside for extended periods of time. I just bought 2 more as gifts for my two son-in-laws. True Wind Protection

This jacket fits true to size, so if you want to add layers underneath, you should size up. I am 5'7" and 150 pounds and size small fits me perfectly. All the pockets are big enough to hold important items (wallet, cell phone, etc.) and still room left for hands when you forget your gloves. This jacket is great for Autumn hikes. Looking forward to wearing it under a shell in Winter.

This jacket is a great piece of gear. I wear it fishing in the early spring and fall and this jacket is very wind resistant and warm even when flying down the river at 60 mph. It layers well and I do not overheat thanks to the underarm ventilation when I stop to throw a line. Versatile, very well constructed and highly recommended.

By that I mean that the quality and fit are what I expected. Quality - well made though the fabric is a bit thinner than other windproof fleeces (which is fine with me). Fit - slimmer cut with longer arms than other brands (again, this is fine with me).

This is a great jacket for when it is not too cold, with some wind, maybe some rain. It is pretty lightweight and provides some warmth, but not so much that it isn't comfortable on average temperature days. I really like my jacket and wear it often for all sorts of purposes.

I purchased the sapphire Wind-stopper tech about a year ago. It has held up well, I wear it nearly everyday up at school. It is very windproof. Just retracing your hand into the sleeve you can feel the difference. (no wind). It looks good and is a good price. The one con is that it is not very warm, it is only good for looks and it's wind blocking capabilities. If you wear a sweatshirt or layers under it you should be alright.

This is my second windstopper tech jacket. My first one is ten years old and it's still going strong. In fact, I gave it to my son and he wears it daily. Throughout the fall, winter, and spring, I grab this jacket more than any other. It's light, warm, and doesn't get in your way. I'm not sure you could ask for much more in a jacket.

This is a replacement for the Windstopper I lost. This is a terrific jacket. It is incredibly warm for its weight. The fit is loose enough so you can add layers underneath making this suitable for the coldest of weather. The sleeves are perfect for my long arms. The only downside is the need to add a waterproof outer layer in case of rain as the jacket does not offer waterproof protection.

Purchased this jacket to replace a 6 yr old wind stopper Tech. It's not as warm, but it has the wind stopping characteristic of the original model. Still a sharp looking, quality piece of outdoor gear. Medium jacket is a good fit for my 67" athletic frame. A good purchase.

The best Fleece I could find

The Mountain Hardware Mountain Tech Jacket was the jacket I decided upon after trying several other fleece jackets. I tried regular non wind proof fleece and they are great for breathability and what not, but they fall apart and wear out like crazy. What appeals to me about this jacket is that it is very well crafted with high quality fibers and the places where the pack rubs on my shoulders is totally "backpack strap wear" proof. The pit zips are a super plus. I have not gotten to try this jacket out in the field but I must say that I look forward to it. It fits absolutely perfect. I wear a small and it still gives just a little room for a thin layer underneath if it happens to be a little colder than expected. Also, the wrist closures have been changed from previous models, and they are great. There is this elastic stuff that closes the arms by the wrists. It is a huge improvement over the older model. Great jacket!

This is my third windstopper. The new jacket is styled differently, (materials and color) from previous jackets but same quality and performance. The collar and cuffs are a different design for better wear. I weight 160lb. and am 5' 10. The medium fits well.

Great jacket, it really suprised me. I wore it all winter and most of the time with nothing but a light shirt under it. The jacket is extremely windproof. Pit zips come in handy when your physical activity is at a high level. Would absolutely recommend this jacket. It's very lightweight and packs down to a small size for travel. I bought this jacket for snowmobiling, but now wear it just about everyday. WINDSTOPPER makes it feel much warmer than other lightweights and it gives the warmth of a heavier jacket. All the finishing touches are top-notch. Pit zips allow venting in warm weather and don't snag. Good, high pockets, cuffs, etc. Design is well thought out.

I was looking for a warm, windproof, technical fleece. The sleeves are not loose enough at the shoulder so when I reach overhead (medium size, 34 inch arms for me) the sleeves are too short. The shoulders fit okay, but the lower body is a bit large and loose. Otherewise great construction. Wish it fit a bit better though.

6'-0" 200 lbs the Large is a good fit. The coat blocks the wind as advertised. Under arm zip vents are the key to the function of the coat, if you get a little warm just open them up and dump the heat. Good looking and very functional. Only things I would do different is the length of the back is a little short, however the sinch down elastic helps to overcome that. The flaps on the hand pockets are built to keep snow out and they make it a little awkward to get into with one hand on the same side as the pocket. But this is not enough to offset how well the coat works and the quality of the build. Would highly recomend this to anyone who is very active in the outdoors.

I bought this for my husband, whose fleece(s) were aging and not doing the trick any longer. What I/he love about it: it's warm, windstopping, non-pilling, has great features (such as pit zips) and is perfect for the backcountry or casual in the city. The charcoal/black is very stylish. I can forsee this being around for a good 20 years...

Since this is the first time purchase of a Hard Wear product I can't really tell how well it's going to wear. It's made very well and my son really likes it worn over a sweatshirt, no heavy winter coat needed since it's windproof that keeps the cold out and the warmth in.

Versatile Jacket

My son doesn't like big bulky winter jackets. He was wearing his Mountain Hardwear lightweight jacket on rainy 40 degree days - a great jacket but not for those conditions. So, I bought him the Tech Jacket. More than anything it provides him with warmth on 40 degree days and protects him from the well. He wears it every day now and thet's the best compliment that can be made.

Although this jacket is not thick, it does stop the wind. You would need some kind of under garment to stay warm in colder weather. However, for a lightweight spring/fall jacket it is perfect. Lots of pockets and very utilitarian. You want to stop the wind, buy this jacket.

I've had this jacket for several years now and have since purchased other Mtn Hardwear jackets (all of which are awesome) including the Alchemy jacket. This is usually the first jacket that comes off the hanger in cool to cold weather. I am comfortable in this thing with a light baselayer and a very light fleece down to around 30degrees. It's also my first choice for snowshoeing because of the pit vents for extra ventilation.

This is a great jacket and the price I got at Altrec was great! I've only had it a few days in moderately cool weather and it was too warm. Good thing it has pit zips. Can't wait to wear it when it's even colder.

This is my second MH Windstopper jacket of this model. It might be one of the best jackets I have ever had. It is perfect for many different climates, fits very well, and is extremely durable. This jacket has me hooked on Mountain Hardwear!

That's right. I love this Windstopper model (2009) so much I panicked when I learned that MH came out with an update. So I bought one more in addition to the two that I'm already using regularly. I have one sapphire and two black. I bought the second black one at 50% discount on this site. I realized later on it was their absolute last 2009 MH Windstopper on Altrec. It's a great sweater for any season and provides excellent protection when there's worse than a breeze blowing around you. You can be sure you won't feel the chill that your face or ungloved hands are feelng. Or if you're hot from hiking and do need a cool down, all you do is open up the pit zip, which works like a charm. I am so impressed with the pit zip feature that it's pretty much a deal breaker when any sweater I'm considering adding to my closet doesn't have it. On really cold wintry conditions, I'd layer one of my 800-fill down sweaters over it and I'm good to go. Or I put a waterproof shell on. On a hike over the boondocks at the Harriman State Park in NY state last winter, that's exactly what I did. The TNF shell also has a pit zip, so with both that and the sweater's pit zips open, I never overheated. I know I would enjoy my MH's for years and years to come. It's styled so will never go out of style; it looks great with hiking pants or plain jeans for a stroll about town. I would consider the updated version (which looks to me more like a softshell, btw) someday maybe. I'll probably partially finance that purchase by selling my newish TNF Windwall, which doesn't have pit zips and which I regret buying.

I will always have one of these in my closet. I bought my first Windstopper Tech jacket 5 years ago and I just recently found my first pebble-sized hole after wearing it almost daily. It has definitely outlasted many other jackets that are falling to pieces. And it's still very windproof. The new one? It's better. The fleece is softer and the construction seems a little more solid. I would guess that it weighs a little more but it's probably worth the extra quality. My only complaint is that the inside chest pocket has been removed. I would highly recommend this jacket.

First off, I'm 6'2" 170-175 pounds (athletic build) and the large fits me exactly as a mid-layer to outer-layer should; it has enough room for a fleece and shirt underneath, but fits snug enough for a water-proof shell to fit over it. The neck is comfortable, the sleeves are long enough, and I have enough room to move without it being baggy. I bought the sapphire blue/black and it looks cool enough, but I only wear this for backcountry trips, backpacking, day-hikes, and trail runs. I spend my time mostly in the San Bernardino Mountains, San Gabriels, Sierra Nevadas, and Santa Anas as I live in Southern California (temporarily), and the jacket is perfect as an outer layer unless it's winter, or it's a rainy day. The pit zips provide excellent ventilation when you're hiking on a day with strong wind gusts, yet is otherwise warm. It doesn't have a hood, but I prefer hats or a beanie anyway, since hoods have always made me feel claustrophobic, and they also affect my peripheral vision, which I don't enjoy on steep, rocky terrain. The pockets seem to be in an odd place until you strap on your large backpack for extended trips and realize the hip belts interfere with normal pockets. The higher placement allows you to access your pockets if need be, and besides, who hikes with their hands in their pockets? Obviously no jacket is perfect for every condition, and in my experience, no jacket works for every person since we all have different preferences and body types, but overall I've found this jacket to be a great asset on the trail and I can honestly recommend it. The company stands by it's lifetime guarantee as I recently broke the zipper on a fleece jacket that I owned for several years and Mountain Hardwear repaired it and shipped it back to me free of charge.

This jacket has been stopping wind for quite awhile now. In fact I haven't checked out the MTJ since MH was using Gore Windstopper instead of their new Airshield material. I was pleasantly surprised to see the overall bulk & weight have been reduced & it stopped the February gale force winds we're experiencing this afternoon just fine. It's also warmer than I was expecting for a fleece/soft shell hybrid. The Mountain Tech Jacket is great for the winter months & I'm sure it will be just as good or better this coming spring & summer.

This is the second Windstopper I've owned and I really like the new style. Great as a mid-layer to keep the wind out. It's the first thing I grab on a cold windy day in New England. The Otter/Black is a great color combination too.

I do a lot of kitesurfing during winter in Greece, this is the only windstopper jacket that really stops the wind and keeps your body warm. Highly recommented!!!

Great jacket!! Only complainant is the pocket location on this jacket is awkward. This jacket seems to repel water good and is comfortable in every other way. Seems to be extra warm and toasty.

This jacket is great! I own 2. It holds up very well and is always comfortable. I always find myself wearing the jacket inside because I forget to take it off. Goretex never disappoints. I never get too hot or sweaty. Just comfortable. I've never even had to use the pit zip, though it's a nice feature. The fit is great. I'm broad shouldered, short and stalky. 5'4 and 180 lbs. I wear a large and it fits me just right...sleeves are a little long but never get in the way.

Look cool and feel good

I put on this jacket 3 ~ 4 days for last two weeks. I really like it. It looks cool and I feel warm. Two things I notice (1) If temperature below 30F then you really need to put on warm clothes besides this jacket. Otherwise a fleece underwear with this jacket could you warm. (2) I found the hand pocket zip open direction is upward. This cause a little inconvenience. I would recommend to my friends.

I bought this jacket for warmth and its wind stop ability. In the end it stops the wind, but is not as warm as my North Face Denali.

If you need a lightweight, all-purpose, everyday jacket, this will do everything you need it to. It's great to wear in light rain (no hood, but you already knew that), blocks wind and keeps you very warm under most conditions. It's stylish and fits well (if you're torn on sizes, go for the larger one, because I usually wear a medium and it was a little snug) and is lightweight enough to use if you're going to be active. It's also really well made, and will take some abuse if you're going to be using it while hiking or camping. I wouldn't use it as a winter jacket, but it's great for spring and fall, and breathes well enough so you can wear it on a cool summer day without getting too hot. Just know that this is a jacket and not a fleece, but it's still a great product that does everything you could hope it could.

I had gotten a shell but i needed something to go underneath it just in case. I got the sapphire/black and it looks amazing, very stylish. It is a true fit indeed, I can zip it all the way up to the neck and not feel constricted. I love the softness around the collar, feels great on the neck. Its summer so its been hot here in California so I havent been able to test it out that much. people have commented that the pockets are weird to keep your hand in. I agree that if they would of moved the both the hand pockets down like 3 inches your hands would be more relaxed in the pockets. i know mountain tech is a good, well known company too.
