my favorite down jacket!
I've purchased several new down jackets this winter to replace ones that are nearing the end of their useful life. The Mountain Hardwear Phantom is my overall favorite. It occupies the middle ground between a lightweight jacket like the Marmot Zeus or Patagonia Down Sweater and a big heavyweight like the North Face Nuptse. It is only a few ounces heavier than the former but almost as warm as the latter. Materials and workmanship are first class. The shell feels like satin and the 800 fill down just seems to have more loft than that of other jackets that claim the same quality. Some reviewers have commented that the hem is a bit short. That was not my experience. I'm 5'11'' and slightly long-waisted. I usually wear a medium jacket but occasionally have to go up to a large. The medium in the Phantom fit me perfectly. The Phantom is a bit pricier than some of the competition, but it's still a good value for the quality you get.

great great great jacket!
The jacket fits and feels perfect! Incredibly light and very warm but not too warm like the North Fact Nuptse jacket. I've had this jacket for a while in Chicago & Philadelphia and it keeps me plenty warm except on the very coldest Chicago days ~ then I'll use a shell over this to keep me bomb proof. Wouldn't do this all the time though bc it'll just make you too warm for most days. Also, the jacket looks great! Just wish they still had the grey color from before!

Good Buy
Tested the jacket May, 2011 in the still heavily snowed-in area of Carson Pass, CA (elevation 8,900 ft) with a hike to Round Top peak (elevation 10,200); jacket was helpful in the 50+ mph winds at the crest - though temperatures at the time were 40 degrees dropping at times to a guesstimated wind-chill of 30 degrees - the jacket performed well.

Construction wise, hard to beat
Some reviews have this coat as fitting too short on the waist, but i find it to fit very well. I am 6'-5" and the L fits very well with plenty of arm length to spare, which is hard to find is some coats. The lining in the pocket and on the neck is a must during cold weather. The material used for the coat lining (like most down coats) equals the temperature outside, so the pockets would be pretty much useless without the lining in side (as is the pockets of the north face thunder coat). Only complaint i have looks wise is the solders are a bit poofy. If i was to get a down coat strictly for looks it would be the north face thunder. If i was to purchase another down coat, this one would be it.

Excellent Warmth
Found the absolute best price and color selection here at Altrec. Great jacket. Fits extremely well and the goose down fill is incredibly warm. I tried a number of other jackets and I was most impressed with the look, fit, and color choices offered by Mountain Hardware.

warm
Warm but not very thick, which is exactly what I wanted. This jacket does not make you look like a marshmallow :)

Great jacket for Colorado
Bought this for my son in law who lives in colorado and does alot of outdoor activities plus often spends time outside for his work. He loves the look and feel and warmth. Said he could wear a tshirt underneath and still be plenty warm. My other two sons and husband all own a mountain hardwear down jacket. Great quality.
