Mountain Hardwear Men's Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket

If you stop and think about it, a dependable climbing jacket is as essential as a reliable mountaineering rope. A four-season mountaineering shelter can save you from the elements and a -40F rated sleeping bag can provide adequate warmth, but it's your jacket that's going to protect and insulate you all the way back to civilization, which is why this 650-fill down Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket is such an essential fit for expeditions and extended climbs. It offers waterproof/breathable performance in the form of a special Conduit™ SL laminate that facilitates vapor transfer without sacrificing body heat. You'll find reinforcement fabric along all key abrasion areas of the garment and plenty of internal and external pockets for gear.

  • Nylon ripstop and taslan shell with a waterproof breathable Conduit™ SL laminate
  • 650-fill down insulation in a baffle construction
  • Nylon taffeta lining fabric
  • Reinforced fabric in key abrasion areas
  • Elastic Velcro® cuffs
  • Zippered fleece-lined handwarmer pockets
  • Zippered chest pocket
  • Internal zippered pocket
  • Mesh water bottle pocket
  • One-handed hem and lower back drawcords
  • Waterproof stuff sack included
  • Weight: 36 oz. (1.03 kg.) in medium sizes

Remarkable jacket
I haven't bought a down coat in 30 years. That is how long my old North Face lasted. I bought this on a recommendation. It is even nicer than my old coat. At -30F it feels like nothing but is so warm. The hood is roomy and fits well. At warmer temps, it is not too warm. It is even water resistant. And I can stuff it in its included stuff sack. It is just about perfect in my estimation. I'm 6 ft and 180 lbs with slightly longer arms. Medium fit me very well. Large is not that much larger though.

Really warm and light
I bought this jacket few weeks ago. I am 6' 195 pounds and the large fits me perfectly. I do have space for layers in it. I am surprised how light and warm this jacket is. You barely feel it when wearing it but, wow, this jacket is warm. I went hiking last weekend in it and even if temperature was between -20 and -40 C I did not even felt the cold!!! The stuff sack that comes with it is really useful when you need to layer down!

Excellent cold weather gear
Mountain Hardwear makes excellent cold weather clothing. This jacket is no exception - it is very light in weight, but will keep you warm in the coldest conditions. The hood and face protection do a great job as well.

Great Hooded Jacket
Sizing note holds true, I ordered one size down and it fit the way I like it to. This jacket is worm and made well. I like the way they make their products a little shorter. I will be ordering more of their jackets, when the one I want becomes available.

very lightweight and very warm
Make sure you get one size larger than your regular sizing. I got a M for my husband and the inseam was just too short. If you bent down, the back area would be exposed to elements. I had to sent it back for an exchange for a L size. Otherwise, the jacket is extremely well made. I would suggest this MH company to improve on the design by elongating the waist length to at least one-two inch longer to a parka length. Then the jacket would be perfect. Five stars for the warmth factor. Four stars to the design.

Great storm coat
Just back from a Mount Shasta summit attempt. At 13,000 feet we got hammered by a whiteout snow storm and gale force winds. The SubZero SL kept hypothermia at bay. Although it got a little damp, the jacket kept its warmth well even lower on the mountain when the snow turned to rain. This jacket is heavier and bulkier than some, but it's a great coat when the weather turns really bad.

Warm and compact with great hood
This jacket is very nice. It's warm, with no cold spots. I use it with my backpack, and the down on the back gets squeezed out to the sides, but its no problem getting the down back into place. The hood is awesome, and the fleece in the hand warmer pockets is really comfortable. Shopping at Altrec is very easy, even for a Norwegian.

Unless you are going to Everest this is the jacket.
I just spent the weekend watching ski jumping in Wisconsin and was standing in all afternoon in 10 F. and was very comfortable without using the hood yet. I could jump into a car and drive for an hour and not over heat. It is very warm and comfortable with a great look. I normally wear size large in non-down jackets and X-large in down to prevent compaction. With this jacket I definitely recommend going up one size for layering and a little added length in the torso. It is puffy but has a nice tailored cut that forms nicely to the body. It has baffels, DWR, wear reinforcements, and great bang for the buck value. It is my go to jacket for cold weather.

Fantastic combination of form and function
When its cold enough to need a down coat, you may as well have the hood. This jacket insulates well and blocks wind. As I expect from Mountain Hardwear, the construction is sturdy. I expect I'll be wearing this for many more Montana winters.

Light, warm, very resistent, extremely wind proof.
It is an outstanding jacket. Very light, extremely warm and plenty of space for store things. I have used for riding my motorcycle, the temperature was 29 degrees Fahrenheit and I was riding at 80 miles per hour and the jacket is 100% wind proof. One feature that I like a lot is the very well designed and warm detachable hood. The jacket is superb in any respect.

Reliable, Water Proof, Warm...
This has been my cold weather ice climbing/belay/at camp parka. Ive used it in sub zero temperatures and I've lived to tell the tale. The waterproof Conduit SL shell is what sold me on this jacket in the first place. In a total downpour the water beads up, but eventually makes the jacket sloppy and heavy. In snow, sleet and freezing rain (the most common precipitation you are bound to encounter in this jacket) I have never had a problem, nor have I been worried that the integrity and warmth of the jacket could become compromised. For the price, the jacket is a solid piece of equipment. I've had the jacket for two years, worn it HARD and its still kicking. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks.

great parka, a little short
This is a fantastic parka. It compressed down to a very small size, and the hood is very comfortable. This kept me very warm at the summit of kilimanjaro and in freezing weather in the mountains of north carolina. My one complaint is that its a bit short and if you have a long torso you may be disappointed; for me it reached to a few inches below my waist. Its warm enough that on a cold night with some fleece pants and underwear I could sleep outside my bag if I wanted to.

Aptly Named
This is an excellent addition to my cold-weather gear. The construction seems to be quite good overall and the zippers (the detail I always examine first) are first-rate. The hood is well designed and keeps you toasty without obscuring your vision; it zips on and off easily. Be warned, this jacket is aptly named; this is a VERY warm jacket. For serious hiking, I would not even consider wearing this jacket until the temps hover around 0 degrees as I find it too warm when the temps are higher. However, it is teriffic for everyday, non-athletic activities around town. All in all, a great value.

Perfect for Canadian winters!
This is a great bomber style down jacket. It looks good enough to wear around town with the hood zipped off and warm enough to handle the coldest Canadian winters with the hood up. The hood is wonderful and I wouldn't be wihout it. The jacket is well constructed with many well thought out features. Mountain Hardwear impresses me once again with their quality and attention to detail.

Wonderful
Outstanding in every respect. Very light, very warm, etc with lots of nice extra details/features I've discovered over time. Nicely water resistant, yet breathable, shell for a down jacket and not it's too puffy for driving. Good length for active use but I'd also consider the longer MH SubZero SL parka as well for more casual wearing.

Hot stuff
I bought this jacket for sedentary activities like watching football games. I was always freezing and wanted something to keep me warm. The jacket is like a sub-zero sleeping bag. I bought the jacket instead of the parka in case I ever decide to use it for winter climbing/mountaineering. A good addition to any jacket collection.

A keeper.
I tested my new jacket yesterday during the ice storm here in the mountains of Va. The roads were bad, so I had to hike several miles to work in horizontal sleet, snow and freezing rain. The jacket kept me very warm, and shed all of the water and ice like a champ! The neck protection is especially nice. I feel very confident taking it out for serious outdoor trips this winter.

Phat and warm
Teriffically warm jacket -- performs well in New England winter climate. I'm warm! Tough, sheds water, light, stuffs down to a small package. I'm 5'2", 120 lbs, female, and the men's XS fits well. I can get away with a size S also. A baselayer plus another jacket (softshell) fits underneath if needed and doesn't hinder movement. Shopping at Altrec is easy, the deals are good, and returns are not a hassle.

A great bargain that doesn't look like one!
Got the jacket a couple weeks ago and I was impressed with its water resistent shell right out of the box. Tap water just rolled right off of it, and it also looks great compared with non-laminated nylon. The genreal design and worksmanship detail that went into this jacket appeared excellent, much better than other brand name jackets in this price range that I checked out at various sports stores in Toronto, which don't even come with a hood. Haven't had a chance to really test it out in the elements yet, but I fully expect it to perform as described in the other reviews. The one thing that kinda bothers me now is the shortness of the torso - the bottom of the front of this jacket only comes down to the top portion the sleeve cuff, and the back maybe an inch or so longer than that. I had to pull the botton drawstring tight to provent cold air from going up walking around town. However this may become an advantage for high exertion activities like hiking and snowboarding. I'll soon find out...

Very nice jacket indeed. Made in China. Meets product description. Stuff sack is a good idea for travel/packing. The main reason before apparel quality to purchase the jacket is the MH special cut for tall & slim men. (long arms). Would buy it again.

Great Product
Since I bought this only a month or so ago, I have yet not put it though it's paces completely. But I can point out some of the great features of this jacket. I will try not to repeat the information given above in the "Description" so please read it first. The material "Conduit SL" seems to be some sort of a Goretex Paclite clone as it sheds water astonishingly well and is windproof. So you can banish the nagging thought in the back of your head "I've got my down jacket on and looks like its gonna snow/rain and I'll freeze to death". The construction is not sewn-thru like most "yuppie" down jackets nowadays, but rather sports a baffle construction so there are no cold spots. The hood is well fitting, insulated and removable. The single chest pocket is large and surprisingly deep. The handwarmer pockets are insulated, fleece lined and zip down (not up !) to close. There is an internal water bottle pocket so no more frozen bottles. There is also a zippered pocket in the inside lower left hand side. Not much, but good for small items. The label says 85% down, which is pretty normal these days. The main abrasion areas (shoulders and upper arms) are reinforced with a heavier fabric and it comes with a waterproof stuff sack. In short, this is a serious piece of gear for extreme climates. Note that this jacket is in a completely different league than the MH Sub Zero Down jacket (similar name) or the TNF Nuptse so a comparison isn't even fair. Now for the downsides - It is a little heavy (over 2lb). The MH logo is a little large It is short - barely covers me bum. I initially wished I had got the MH Sub Zero SL Down Parka instead, but after some use I think that this is probably turned out better as the Parka would have probably been overkill. This is the best down jacket I've owned in my life. I'll re-review it next spring and tell you all how it fared.

Very warm
This jacket is very warm. It was almost too warm during my last trip, but I would rather complain about being too warm than being too cold. It compresses well for having a hood. The size is right on. It allows you to layer under it if you have too. Very cool looking also.

Our quick research paid off
My son, who grew up in California headed to Michigan for college and was not prepared for the cold. In the middle of January, we bought this jacket , on-line (it was an emergency) after checking out various winter jackets at North Face, Patagonia, REI, etc. Most of the jackets were of heavy weight materials and "too long". He wanted a shorter, bomber style jacket. He says it is "the best". It is very lightweight but very warm--"like a comfortable sleeping bag". He loves the warm hood and warm-up pocket. And, it was great in a snowstorm walking across campus as it is waterproof.

Jacket is well designed. Drawstrings are not anchored well (one thread anchor at the end which ripped as soon as I got it) but otherwise a good investment. Holds out pretty much all moisture. Warning for people with longer torsos, the jacket is a little short in length.

Warm, Warm, WARM!
I was fortunate to pick up a closeout at a great price. I must admit, I had no reviews to go on, knew nothing about the coat and simply wanted something down at a good price. I ended up with last year's model (boo hoo) for under $100. I'd consider this coat a bargain at twice the price. In 34 years, I've yet to own anything even remotely close to this item in warmth. Even the much heavier coats I've tried can't compare. Where I used to need a L/S tee/turtleneck and a sweater/sweatshirt under my shell/liner to keep warm, I could probably go naked under this one (God save us all). I can't recommend this item highly enough. Be different and stand out from the TNF crowd.

Top product
If you're going anywhere where it might me a little chilly this is the one. Snug, smug warth guaranteed wherever you go. It packs down pretty good too, and makes an excellent camping pillow. Stylish too, both on the hill and down the pub. The attention to detail in the design of this jacket is amazing, every feature you need and more. Very well thought out by people who have definately spent a lot of time standing about on a cold mountain. One little niggling point is that it can be hard to get the zipper started with frozen or gloved fingers.

I bought this jacket last spring, and had not worn it until this past week. Went skiing today, it was 6 below at the top, and blowing about 30 knots. I could Not get over how warm I was! It is just a strange feeling being SO warm, and yet feeling like you are not wearing anything! It is so light, fits great. I regret that I have not had a down jack for almost 30 years. Great down jacket, with a highly water resistant conduit shell and a zip off hood. I always carry it in the bottom of my winter pack as an insurance policy. Very warm and comfortable. Really bulletproof and comfy.
I wore this on a bitterly cold(-22 Celsius) windy day and felt just as warm as I did in the bed I left that morning. Excellent design, hood will go over a helmet and front flap closure covers lower face. Very lightweight and comfortable to wear. Worth every penny if you are out in very cold conditions. The cut is rather snug.

Great jacket, just not as good as the 800 fill
This jacket is incredibly warm and confortable. Pockets are great and plentiful. Hood is excellent. I wouldn't call it a complaint, but the 650 fill is a bit bulkier then their 800 fill jacket, but I knew that comming in, and the 650 fill down is less the half the price. This jacket represents a better value, but for those where price is no object I'd go for the 800 fill.

Another fantastic product from Mountain Hardwear
I bought this jacket for my husband and he loves it! It arrived just in time for our -20C cold snap this week. Keeps you very warm but is extremely lightweight. The only complaint he had was they should have put a soft fabric inner collar on it as the nylon gets rather cold against the skin if you aren't wearing a shirt with a neck or a scarf. Other than that it was a hit. Sizing was consistent with other Mountain Hardwear products we have bought. Definately worth the money.

I got this jacket so that I would have a a decent down jacket with a down hood for 21-23000 in the himalaya. I liked my moonstone jacket better since it fluffed more and was warmer, but it did not have a hood. The MH SZ SL Hooded is a good piece, well made, and keeps me warm.

Nicely designed and well made jacket
Although I have not yet had an opportunity to test its limits, I am very satisfied with the design and construction of this jacket. I will be taking a trip in late June to Kilimanjaro and I expect this jacket to do the trick. The only comments I have so far are that I wish it were a bit longer and it is somewhat tight in the armpits, which may limit the amount of clothing I wear underneith. But just put this jacket on and you can feel the warmth and comfort that I expect it to deliver.

Very Good
I was impressed with this jacket because it seemed well-made and had features I liked: fleece lined pockets, inside zippered pocket, and I think is significantly warmer than another jacket I liked which had synthetic insulation. This jacket, however, is puffier. You're not going to look tailored in this jacket. Because it's puffier, it's not as flexible as those synthetic lined jackets but it's a far cry from the Michelin Man jacket...and it's much warmer than synthetic. However, it only goes down to the hip, so some long winter sweaters will peak out below the bottom of the jacket. The collar is pretty high and hard so if it's fully zipped up, which you don't have to do unless the wind is really blowing, it can be uncomfortable. I had to deliberate long and hard whether I would buy this jacket because it's expensive. I was swayed by its workmanship and warmth without being too big. I just wish that Mountain Hardware and a prettier and smaller logo.

value
This a well thought out jacket; boxwall, weatherproof outer, excellent workmanship, goose down. Sturdy enough to use in regular cold weather activity. Slightly short, for serious mountain protection, try out size prior to purchase or go with something else (or get complementary pants). I use mine for "street" and thus don't mind the short style.

Great Jacket!
Excellent jacket! Only thing I didn't like was the lack of colors even though I would have been cool w/just black.

Warm and lightweight
This jacket is very warm and surprisingly lightweight. It is almost too warm for high exertion activities like shovelling snow but works well otherwise. Be advised that the fit truly is just below the hip so it is a short jacket.

Like wearing a sleeping bag.
Light, cozy, sexy, and most importantly I can't even feel the wind in the 15 degree NYC winter. I don't sweat. This coat somehow, magically (I'd guess) keeps me toasty, but at a perfect temp. Plus, not everybody has this coat, unlike North Face, which is becoming the next Starbucks.

Excellent!
Great jacket - from cold ice belays, to sitting around a chilly camp. Love the packability and ability to remove the hood if necessary. Recommend this jacket to anyone needing a versatile layer!

Front Could be Better!
Front is too short--could use AT LEAST 1-1.5" and still maintain its functionality for belaying. Ragalan sleeves are great. Pockets are all fleece. Enough down to keep you warm to -5F. Baffled construction prevents cold going through the stitches. Hood has a good amount of down and is functional with different gear on your head.

too short for a 6 footer
i recieved this jacket as a gift. it is very warm, and wind proof. -20 degrees and i wear a t-shirt underneath. however this garment needs to be longer. they should not even sell the jacket, only the parka. it also should have a powder skirt for extra protection. should have gotten a parka!!

Great Jacket, too short
I'm 5'10" and find the jacket to be a few inches too short. In all other respects I really like the it.

5 for features 1 for sizing
I'm 5'4" and it's too short and I am a female and I should be able to get a small but it is too short. Of course, the medium is too large in the shoulders. Most women don't like the women design coat.

a good but not great piece of colthing/equipment.
this coat has the worst zipper of any piece of gear i have ever owned. i do believe that if i were in the outdoors for several days of single digit temps i would possibly freeze my fingers trying to get the zipper started. the collar stands up nicely however there is a seam at the collar top which, in the scheme of things, should be eliminated as several coats i have worn before have done. i like the body construction overall.

Not good for the tall and skinny
First of all, I don't doubt that this is a great coat. I had never bought a down coat before (didn't need one in MD, but I'm going to college in VT this fall) and several different people recommended this specific coat. I got the jacket today (size L) and it's way too short. I'm 6'3" and 155 pounds (tall and skinny) and it just doesn't work. It's a little bit big around on me, which is how it should be, and the sleeves are a good length (past my wrists) but it's much too short. When I'm standing up, arms down, it barely goes down to the top of my butt, as in it would hardly cover my beltline. Raising my arm above my head pulls the bottom of the coat above the top of my hips. It's too short. I would not consider ordering an XL because the L works perfectly other than length. I may order the parka. To this jacket's credit, it does seem to be really high quality, it's very lightweight, and it made me extremely hot on wearing it just for a minute on a 70 degree day...I'm sure it would give me no problems well below freezing. So, it's still a darn good jacket, but it's not for the tall and skinny. Better for those who are more evenly proportioned, and best for those who are short for their build. Anyway, kudos to Altrec on their return policy, I'll be doing that today and it seems fairly painless. Quick note: the coat in the photo is the Parka, not the Jacket.
