Mountain Hardwear Men's Transition Featherweight Zip T

Excellent for climbing, skiing, backpacking, traveling and snowboarding in windswept and exposed landscapes, the Transition Featherweight Zip T is just as light and breathable as other lightweight base layers, but the WINDSTOPPER® N2S Featherweight shell fabric has a windproof WINDSTOPPER® laminate to effectively neutralize cold air penetration. The articulated cut combined with the snug and stretchy Push Pull knit fabric along the cuffs, sides and hem help seal in body heat without the bunching and binding sometimes found in middle layers designed with a relaxed cut.

  • Lightweight, windproof and breathable WINDSTOPPER® N2S Featherweight shell fabric
  • Moisture-wicking Push Pull knit fabric (71% nylon/17% Lycra/12% polyester) along cuffs, sides and hem
  • Windproof WINDSTOPPER® laminate
  • Articulated alpine cut for mountaineering and other alpine activities
  • 12-in. front zip
  • Lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship
  • Weight: 9 oz. (255 g.) in medium

can't go wrong
This is my fifth shirt...when the temp drops, the transition featherweight goes on. It's great as a single layer for a run, or as a base layer for skiing and winter cycling. Breaths well, drys fast, easy to clean....love it.

THE best product in my ski drawer
Can't get enough of these! I've been using the MH Transition for a few years now for skiing. I ski New England from November to May. When it is really cold - 0 F and below - I'll wear a very thin compression base layer under the Transition and a thinsulate shell as a third layer and will be completely comfortable for the day. For warmer days 15+ - the Transition and a vest is all I wear. Unless there's a biting wind, I generally stop wearing the Transition around 30 F and above. The Windstopper panels block wind where it counts and allow moisture to escape. The stretch panels at the sides and in the sleeves keep the shirt trim to the body without restricting movement. Out of all the ski clothing I have, this is the one piece that I plan all other layers around. Because of the excellent wind protection, this shirt reduces the need for insulating bulk to an absolute minimum. I hope MH never stops making this product!!

shirt design requires a snug fit people...
...remember that MH designed this shirt to fit next to your skin, thus creating a "micro-climate" between your skin and layer. This technology allows for more efficient transport of water vapor out and away from your skin (breathabity) which will keep you dry even under the most strenuous exertions. So the lesson here is... don't 'layer up' under this shirt, buy the correct size that will fit as a base per design. Go buy another fleece pullover if you want an outer layer. My review: this shirt rocks, it really does work as a combo base layer and wind-blocking water-resistant shell... great job Mountian Hardwear!!!

about sizing
There are enough reviews here telling you how great this piece is, and it indeed is, but many say to size up. well that depends on what your looking for. If you are looking for more of a shell, or pullover, to wear layers under, or if you want to wear the garment casually, then by all means size up. but trust me, Mountain Hardwear knew what they were doing here when it comes to sizing. This is (1) a shirt, not a shell. (2) is utilizes Gore N2S, which is is why it is described as being used as a baselayer, and for a baselayer to work, it needs to have contact with the skin. (3) the cuffs, sides, and hem have a slight compression fit to them(read the description above), in order to'seal' to your body, because after all, this is a WIND shirt, and if the piece is too loose, wind will rush in from bottom, chilling you big time, and also all the loose fabric will be ruffling in the wind, so a tapered fit here is ideal. this piece is designed perfectly for what it is, a SEMI-FITTED wind SHIRT. many people are just so used to relaxed fit cut that it may SEEM too small at first try. just be sure of what you want. After all, this thing is so good, why not by one of each size......

Perfect for chilly mornings
Bought this for my morning bicycle commute based on others' recommendations and also got it one size larger. It's become my everyday go-to top. The windproofness and lack of insulation is perfect to layer with. The only thing missing for cycling is a rear pocket. Almost makes cold mornings something to look forward to.

Essential for riding
I wear this shirts for my riding and am very satisfied. A friend of mine wearing a Polartec Powerstretch shirts for the same purpose recommended the same one to me. But I chose this N2S. It is more suitable for riding because of wind-proof and fast-drying abilities.

Versatile N2S shirt
I love to play tennis and mountain biking. Both are very demanding. I wear this shirt plus a light Gore-wind stopper jacket for mountain biking even on cold winter days(35 degree) and the sweat-wicking capability of this shirt is just amazing. You feel dry and comfortable and won't feel cold after sweat that much. And it's also very stylish that I sometimes wear it to work.

Great workout top!
This is a great top when used for active sports. I use it for biking and skate skiing. It does have a tight fit so order a size large if you want some room or normal if you won't have a heavy layer under it. I have taken this shirt down to about 15 F. skate skiing with a base layer and it is fine.

One of the best items I bought for running
This product is everything it claims to be--lightweight, breathable, and windproof. I use it with just a tanktop underneath in tmeperatures ranging from 35 degrees to 60 degrees. In colder temperatures I wear either a fleece hat or ear warmers to preserve heat, and in warmer temperatures I pull down the front zipper and roll up the sleeves. I also like that it is long enough so that it does not "ride up" in back or front when I run. I often go running on a route through a park where the temperature can vary by 10-15 degrees because one section is warm and sunny and the other is cold and windy. It is great to wear something that can adapt to this range of temperatures. I suggest choosing one size larger than you usually wear because this has a very tapered cut. Don't even consider wearing your usual size unless you meet all the numbers on the sizing chart, especially the waist. I am 5' 7", 165 pounds, wear a 40 short suit, and a 15 1/2 32 shirt. I bought this in a large and it fits great. The sleeves are not overly long, and I actually like the extra sleeve length on colder days because I can cover my hands and not worry about having to take gloves on and off when my hands warm up. I am an avid runner who runs outdoors year round in the Northeast, and this is one of the best items I ever bought. It is attractive, well made(you can tell by the stitching) and does everything that it is supposed to. I highly recommend it.

Great BaseLayer
When I tried it , I was a little skeptical at first but it worked great. When you stop in the winter in the Whites of NH, You can get the chills from the moisture on you. This will keep you dryer & less chilled when you stop. I didn't like the feel against my skin. so I wear a MH extend featherweight top under & it's great!

Order a size up
If you are running and producing internal heat, this will work well. It's made to be breathable when you're running. I usually wear a size large in my shirts, but I've worn enough Mountain Hardwear to know that they sometimes run small in their sizing. With this particular Mountain Hardware shirt, you should definately size up a size to acheive optimal fit. I'm 6'2", 175lbs and chose the XL. The result is a perfect fit.

Top 10 gear to have
Great Mountain Hardwear: The Transition Featherweight Zip T is on my top 10 list of must have gear. I hike on average 100 or so days a year now. It has been with me in a tremendous number of conditions and always performs extremely well. It always goes to Europe with me while other gear must unfortunately stay home. I have bought two backups in case Mountain Hardwear is stupid enough to stop making it. My friend Nate should get one. A great choice for non windy days is the Mountain Hardwear Detonator short sleeve. It is a beefed up version of a wicking T-shirt.

I use it for all occasions. It creates a microclimate that breathes extemely well. In fact i used it at Ironman Wisconsin 2006 as a baselayer in which the weather was 52 degrees with non-stop rain and wind. I never chilled and stayed dry (at least my core) throughout. Hope this helps.

Definitely size up
The pullover is as described by other reviewers so the stress for me is the sizing information. To say that this shirt is one size smaller is understated; it is, in fact, two sizes too small. I understand that it is meant to be next to the skin but there is little mobility when worn. Otherwise, a very nice shirt.

Great for cycling, beats the wind-chill!
I have a couple of these N2S shirts and found them to be indispensable for cycling. This shirt is perfect on those rides when it's overcast with a light to moderate wind and a little bite in the air (45-55F). It's the perfect base layer to beat the wind-chill without overheating. The fit is true to size and looks great, I don't find it "itchy" but you will notice the seams when first put on - otherwise it's really nice to have on those less than perfect days.

Wow, wow, woW
Super-lightweight, Super-comfortable, Super-sweet. Get it here, folks. This must have been invented by the elves. The shirt weighs nothing, but can keep you warm and sweatfree by itself from about 20 to 60 degrees. I have used it last season and without a rip or even showing any wear. I'd wear it to work if they would let me. Just another quality piece of craftsmanship from Mountain Hardware. This top is cut with a nice athletic fit, so it's not too roomy or bulky on us thin guys like me.

Great winter biking base layer
Wear this next to the skin, under a thermal layer, to stay warm and dry when the temperature is 35 to 50 degrees. I use the PI Escalation jersey on top at the colder end of the temperature range and a lighter jersey on warmer days. This combination works much better than a thermal layer under an Activent shell.

A must have
Very pleased. I've been running in the featherweight zip t and transition featherweight tights. In 30 degree weather, I was warm, comfortable and dry with just the one layer. Exceeded my expectations. I am most impressed with the moisture transfer. With a runners hat on, my head was sweating pretty heavily, yet my body and the garments were dry. Even in a light drizzle, the water beaded and was easily shed. Definitely a snug fit, but the well placed stretch fabric makes it very comfortable for running, and should be even better for biking. A back pocket would be nice. The full zip I believe has the pockets, so for some people that might be a better option. Extremely satisfied with the product.

High Priase for the Zip-T
The Zip T is a champ when it comes to beating back cold weather. I bought it recently to help with winter cycling and it worksed great as an outer layer, just as I expected. I was surprised to find that for long runs in cold and blustery weather, it holds its own as well. I usually wear a midlayer fleece and light shell coat on days when the temperature's below freezing. To my delight, I found I could use a baselayer and the Zip T and still be comfortably warm.

Great for the purpose
As a cyclist, I bought this for days when it is cooler and the wind is a factor. It really does a fine job in that regard. It isn't for wet, overly chilly days or very hot days. But, ah, those early morning or Autumn or Spring rides...this is the ticket. Bottom line: it expands my riding season.

Great shirt
This shirt is very comfortable, light and effective. It dries quickly and the deep zipper vents well, keeping me from overheating. It runs a bit on the small side so I went with a size larger than usual (I wear a light weight base underneath it). It's not restrictive and while it won't provide much thermal warmth it does a good job of blocking the wind.

amazing garment!
I just bought my second one of these (and at a most excellent price, thanks to Altrec). My first is an XL, and while it fit well for running, it flapped a little for cycling. So I got a L for that. This garment is amazing! One light layer works from 30 degrees to 60, especially whan windy. WIth a light vest over, it is comfortable in the 20's. It's light but warm, and breathes really well. The only time I've sweated in it was an upper 50's trailrun with 1500 feet of climbing in 2 1/2 miles (in KY and TN humidity.)The most versatile pieces of clothing I own-great for running, biking, hiking, boating, etc., etc. If it had a pocket (or 2) it would be absolutely perfect. The only thing I can knock it for is that briars on the trail can cause "runs" in the fabric, but no major damage(so far). I wish the tights fit well (they just don't work for me), cause with both, you'd have a great protective "skin" for all kinds of cool-weather adventures!

Must have for biking
Few products reach the status of a must have. This one does. The windstopper N2S makes this Zip T, combined with tights, protective enough to ride or run comfortably on early season rides or runs with or without wind although I would not go below 40 degrees or so. The price compares well with a good bike jersey. Although it lacks the back pockets typical of jerseys the windstopper more than compensates and is more important - at least to me. In cooler temps I wear with a capilene baselayer. The seams on mine have not been abrasive as some others have noted and I have not had an issue with this Zip T or the pants being subject to pulls or abrasion. High marks on this one.

This shirt is great. It blocks wind completely and breathes well with no overheating. I find it works really well as an insulator, and can be worn by itself in suprisingly cold temps. It stretches well and fits nicely too. Mountain Hardwear continues to provide excellence in technologically advanced gear and outerwear.

does what it claims to do!
This is an extremely light weight piece that does actually help keep you warm, dry, and protected from the wind. I use it for downhill skiing and I really like it. I didn't trust it could actually be three layers in one (it is sooo light!) but tried anyway. The first time I tried it, I ended up wearing it for 12 hours straight!! It went from hard alpine skiing (with a fleece and a shell on a cold but not freezing day) to watching a competition in the early evening to a concert that night and then finally to dinner--no problem. The thermoregulation was great. I was only uncomfortable after many hours when I wasn't moving because of what felt like an interior seam near the top of the zip. As soon as I unzipped it a bit, I was fine. Also, you may need to buy a size bigger than you normally would.

Excellent
Best base layer ....period! Hit the trail with just the zip-tee and a vest. Temp was 18 degrees. Climbed for about 2 hours in the sun and it provided excellent wicking and wind protection. For the killer powder downhill just pulled over a powder shirt. The single base layer has replaced all my other base layers

Warm and pratical
Lightweight and warm on the berg. Best worn with a vest and right against the skin. Top quality piece of gear that all skiers will want.

Just what I've been looking for.
I do a lot of downhill "skateboarding" on a Carveboard, and have to deal with a lot of headwind and early morning windchill here in Texas. This top is everything I've wanted--extremely lightweight, wicks well, and sets up great with a layer. The freedom of movement is terrific, and the longer sleeves accomodate gloves perfectly. A great piece of gear for temps or windchill that drops into the 30s.

Great
Mountain Hardwear: Transition Featherweight Zip T hits the mark. Light weight but keeps the wind out. Exceptionaly warm for a light shirt. I like the extra long sleeves, you can pull the cuff over your hands when its cold. The stretch material in the sleeves and sides give the shirt greater mobility during activities. Great athletic fit -looks good not a baggy wind shirt that flops in a breeze. I pack the shirt everywhere and now leave the bulky sweatshirt at home. Please make more color combinations! Expensive but worth it!

Can't go wrong
I've always been pleased with Mountain Hardware gear. This windshirt is light, fully windproof and is surprisingly good at shedding water. Plan on taking less layers, as it performs in a wide variety of conditions. Also, don't hesitate to order from Altrec.com. Their service, prices, and quick delivery of goods make it a sure bet.

Perfect for anything in the back country.
Used this product recently on an ice climbing trip in Jackson Hole. Very comfortable and kept me warm, forgot I was wearing it most of the time. Also did some back country skiing and the shirt performed well. Perfect as a base layer in less than ideal conditions.

Terrific T
Lightweight and comfortable. Completely windproof though quite breathable. Ideal for winter aerobic activities (e.g. snowshoeing, skiing). Great as a baselayer or a midlayer. Excellent construction. Mountain Hardware manufactures superb clothing. Highly recommended. AL
