Great crag, alpine climbing or travel pack!!!
July 22, 2012
I have a lot of backpacks and I can tell you this is my go-to pack when I am heading to the crag or traveling for a climbing trip. The reasons are the size, weight and versatility of the pack. It can carry a decent size climbing rack, 60m rope, harness, 2 pairs of climbing shoes, nalgene and extra layer or two. It carries this load very nicely. The lid and front have easy access pockets for items that need to be accessed quickly. There are additional compression straps that stow away in the front pocket to keep the pack clean or there when you need to strap on extra gear. I have a medium size which fits my 5'9", 140lb frame well. I'll admit the hip belt is almost a tad big but I also have a 29-inch waist. The best part may be that I can easily break down the pack: remove the hip belt, internal wave frame, and use it as a summit, day pack, or carry-on when flying. I detach the lid with the easy clips and throw it in the pack, and the FlapTop (with an extra small pocket) can come down to clip to the front clips and act as a a lid to protect the inside from the weather and compress the pack. Not to mention the pack carries ice axes well, too. The ONLY negative thing I have noticed is that the material is thinner and lighter and is subject to abrasion and wear when rubbing over rocks (think scooting on you butt over boulders and scree). However, so far, these are only superficial abrasions and have not gone through the burlier second layer of the pack.
Pros: Great design, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, Cons: outer material on bottom subject to abrasionAlready own the Mountain Hardwear Via Rapida 35 Backpack? Tell us your thoughts.
