Great jacket for everyday use
May 24, 2012
While the Chillwave didn't have as much cold weather this winter to deal with, it did well on those few very cold days we had. It was a step up in down filling from the previous 550 North Face jacket and was a noticeable improvement. Have had good experience with Mountain Hardware apparel in the past and look forward to years of good use from this one. The company steps up if repairs or replacements are necessary.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performanceruns large
February 21, 2012
This jacket seems like it would be warm but it's also bulky and runs quite large. I ordered a medium, which is my normal size, but it feels several sizes too large.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of usegreat jacket
October 21, 2011
super warm jacket - plan to take it up to a 20,000+ foot alpine climb. the jacket is a great value compared to other brands, packs small which is a great advantage when backpacking.
October 20, 2011
This jacket is the bomb! It's the best weatherproof down jacket I've ever seen. The hood fit is outstanding - tight and adjustable enough to wear with a helmet, and I love that it's removeable. Also love the adjustable cuffs. Other reviewers said it ran large, but I disagree - if you plan on wearing this over your regular winter backcountry layers, the overall fit is just right. I usually wear a medium (5'7", 135#) and got a large in this jacket, and it is perfect for throwing on over my ski wear in the bc. If I was only planning on wearing it around town I would have gotten a medium or even a small. The only downside is that it is kind of heavy and bulky, but that's the inevitable tradeoff - lightweight and small vs. bigger and burlier. I plan on carrying this in my ski pack on all my backcountry excursions, and pulling it out for lunch stops and winter camping. This jacket will be one of the best pieces of emergency safety gear in my pack (I'll even offer it to a friend if someone gets hurt and needs an evac - but hopefully that won't happen!). LOVE THIS.
Super Warm Down Jacket!
August 30, 2011
Purchased jacket to climb Rainier. Jacket kept me super warm and it's Conduit SL layer helps to ensure no precip during the trip caused the down to clump. I wish it was waterproof, but the Conduit SL is more than acceptable w/o taped seams. I love the fleece lined pockets and the large hood. Fits maybe slightly larger than MH fleece jackets so it fits a little long on me, but I think that's a bonus in this case. Can't wait to get out and use this jacket more. The quality of the jacket is very good, and I expect to have it for many years.
Instant Heat
August 12, 2011
Perfect for cold weather. Bought this jacket this winter right before we hit about -18 and let me tell you, I never got cold. Thank you Mountain Hardwear.
fantastic sub zero jacket
August 05, 2011
High performance jacket that keeps you cozy and warm in the coldest conditions. Just used it at camp and as my back-up jacket for climbing and skiing at higher altitudes in Bolivia, and in some fierce winds, and was well protected. Detachable hood and other great features like lined pockets and collar. I am 5'7 and athletic build- Medium was the perfect size. WARM!
Jacket worth the cost
January 16, 2011
I bought this jacket for use snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and hiking in the winter time in the Aridondacks and Green Mountains. This jacket is extremely lightweight so it won't slow you down while working hard. It also really is windproof and the water just beads right off of it. The hood is ideal for windy days, it had two strings and pently of room for a helmet if necessisary. If you are looking for a really nice looking jacket that is light and had all the perks of a professional outdoorsman jacket this is the coat for you. Also, I just like the way the coat looks.
Warmest Lightest Jacket Ever!
January 12, 2011
Extremely warm and amazingly light! I love this jacket. The hood is removable, which is a very nice touch. The stuff sack is cool and very convenient for travel. I bought this jacket specifically for a trip to NYC for New Year's Eve. The jacket stowed away in it's stuff sack inside my small day pack on the Amtrak ride up. Wore it all night long in Times Square on NY's and didn't get cold once. The hood kept my neck and ears warm and didn't obstruct my field of vision at all. I'm 5'3" 120 lb, athletic build and size small is perfect for me. I normally wear size Medium in every other Mountain Hardwear shirt, fleece, and jacket I own, but this jacket seems to run a little big. If you want to stay warm and not feel bogged down with a weighty coat, this jacket is for you. Very stylish, too!
My favorite puffy coat ever!
January 07, 2011
This coat is not too bulky even though it's a puffy coat, and it is very lightweight, and yet it is soooo warm! The hood is very deep and closes well/easily with velcro. I used to wear my boyfriend's to walk out to the end of our driveway to get the mail when it's cold or snowy because I love it so much - so I decided to get my own size and now I can wear it everywhere! Get this coat if you are serious about warmth and blocking the wind. And I think it still looks sleek, especially in the shiny black material. The outer material might snag or tear easier than some heartier material, but I think it's the same reason why it's so lightweight. I haven't had any issues, and neither has my boyfriend (and he uses his to commute to work on the train), so so far so good. Just mentioning it because that's really the only downside I can think of. It's a little expensive as well, but I think it's worth the cost.
Amazing Jacket
January 06, 2011
I own this jacket in the men's version and absolutely love it - I'm warm with a t-shirt on in 30F weather sitting still. I bought this for my perpetually cold girlfriend. She's perpetually cold no longer. The women's jacket has a very comfortable neck lining which is soft to the touch. An xs fits her 5'4" frame perfectly and doesn't look overly puffy. Design and quality are top notch. Just make sure you're okay with getting a jacket like this instead of a parka - if I don't tuck my shirt in, the wind comes a blowing in.
January 06, 2011
Nice piece of gear for mountaineering and tooling around the slopes! I would definitely recommend this parka to those looking for a quality piece of equipment that is warm, durable and multi-functional.
Great jacket in the cold
December 10, 2010
The jackets fits well, true to size. It is warm enough in the freezing cold. Pockets are good, both to keep hands warm and to keep vallet im place. The only comment that I do have, is that the zipper in front is a bit difficult to start.
Perfect
November 16, 2010
Sunday November 14 turned out to be a perfect day. My husband and I, both in our brand new Mountain Hard Wear Sub Zero Hooded Down jackets, went on our first winter hike in the Rocky Mountains. The temperature was in the upper teens, but we stayed warm without having to pile on the layers. The down hoods are a great addition. They provide excellent warmth (far better than the single layer nylon usually found in most down jackets) and feel as if you are wearing nothing on your head. The weather was not so bitter that I had to close the bottom flaps on the hood (the ones that close across your neck and mouth), but I was pleasantly surprised that the fabric--although soft on the skin--was still sturdy enough not to flap against my face in the wind. My husband and I both have had several down jackets before, but they were never as light, warm and comfortable as these. Last, but not least, it is great that we will never again need to bring waterproof shells. Oma
Just what I was looking for
November 04, 2010
I've been looking for a warm down hooded jacket now for a couple years. I do a lot of winter hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing and have been cold in past winters. I had a few important things in my mind when researching such an item, color and right price. When I was looking on various websites I found many really nice looking down jackets but they were so expensive. I'm glad I found this one. It was reasonably priced and the color I wanted. Now all that's missing is the first snow:)
Mountain Hardwear Women's Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket
August 04, 2010
I am 5'8" 132 lbs. (normally wear a womens 4-6)and I ordered a medium size in this jacket. It seemed to be a fantastic down jacket and was exactly what I looking to buy however it did not fit at all! It was huge, hung off the shoulders and even with that the sleeves were very short. If you have long arms this is not the jacket for you. It was also extremely large through the chest and waist. I would recommend ordering a size smaller than you normally wear and order only if you have normal to short arm length.
Amazing Warm Light Jacket
July 07, 2010
I love these Mountain Hardwear Jackets. I own three and in the Chicago winters, it keeps me cozy and warm. It's a great buy. I survived the winters with the hooded jackets as it kept my neck and back nicely covered-up.
A Jacket For All Seasons
June 14, 2010
I bought this jacket for camping up in the high country (above 10k ft) - which it works great for. But what I've mainly been using it for is evenings here in San Diego in the summer - I know everyone keeps talking about how great it is a cold temperatures - but it you leave the hood off, it keeps you cozy without overheating or moist on a breezy stroll along the bay. This is a great jacket - with a few modifications to the hood, sleeve, waist closures it works for any type of weather.
Amazing Jacket
April 15, 2010
I had the old SL version of this coat without the hood and loved that. This one is even better! The zip off hood is ideal for not too frigid adventures and wanting to lighten your load. Also, the felt lined collar is an added bonus. As for sizing, it does run a little large; a small is a tad big on me... I'm 5'3 130 lbs.
warm but losing loft
April 02, 2010
i loved this jacket, apparently too much, because now after a year of use, feathers have started leaking out on a fairly regular basis. i live in fairbanks, alaska though where the temperatures reach down to -60, so i pretty much lived in it all winter and i can definitely say it did the job!
Warm but runs large.
March 13, 2010
Once I got this jacket in the correct size I fell in love with it. It is warm and comfy and stays waterproof in heavy snow.
Fantastic Jacket
February 22, 2010
This jacket is so warm and fantastic. I'm sorry that I didn't buy this two years ago when I bought a down jacket from a leading catalog company. I bought a large because I was concerned that a medium would be too constricting with multiple layers on. With two layers the large is roomy, so I think that was a good choice for me. I especially like the interior pockets and fleece lined zippered outer pockets.
Great but runs large
February 13, 2010
I should have read the reviews more closely when I ordered this jacket. I am 5 foot 10 and I still found the medium huge. I had to return it for a small. Otherwise I love it.
Product is Great!!
January 17, 2010
The Jacket was for my wife and it is awesome, warm, looks great and was in perfect condition upon arrival! Great price also! Thanks!
Love this jacket!
January 03, 2010
Very warm and comfortable. I agree with the sizing-order one size smaller. Speedy service too!
Excellent coat- warm and functional
December 26, 2009
Bought it for a gift. She loves it. Wears it walking to barn to work on horses. More comfortable than her snuggi.
Great Jacket
December 23, 2009
I ordered this jacket for my girlfriend and she loves it. She has had other down jackets in the past but says she would never go back. It is extremely lightweight and space friendly when traveling. The whole jacket fits into a carry bag which is smaller than a pair of average sized shoes. Would recommend this jacket for cold weather areas or the thin blooded.
A BIT DISAPPOINTING
December 21, 2009
I bought a Mountain Hardwear jacket two years ago, when my old Columbia jacket finally zipped its last zip. The collar and hood of the Mountain Hardwear jacket was much warmer than my old jacket. But the torso and sleeves are not nearly as warm. I've tightened the wrists and the drawstrings, but the wind still cuts right through the jacket. This is my second winter to wear this jacket, and hopefully my last. But the collar and hood are great.
Great Jacket...but, size runs big
September 07, 2009
Really liked this jacket. Lightweight and very warm. Only one thing: the size of this jacket runs big, so I would order a size smaller than normal.
Very warm comfy jacket
July 19, 2009
I got this jacket last fall to keep me warm walking between buildings on my college campus during the cold New England winters. I am pleased with this purchase. It keeps me warm and dry even on the coldest days. I also used it for downhill skiing. Though it is very warm, it does not keep the wind out well so I sometimes got chilled while skiing down the mountain.
Wonderful jacket
May 03, 2009
This is the wonderful down jacket I ever had. The light weight and soft shed is really comfortable. Thanks! : )
Excellent cold weather gear
June 17, 2008
This jacket is fabulous. It is soft, lightweight, and extremely warm. It packs down to virtually nothing in the included stuff sack - a plus when going from a warm climate to a snowy mountain area, especially these days, when every bit of space counts in your luggage. Highly recommended for temps down to about -15, with proper layers.
Great jacket
January 21, 2008
This jacket is short on inseam. I love the lightness and warmth of this jacket, but the length is shorter than most other jackets. If this was made into a parka length, then this would be a perfect jacket. I know that MH makes SubZero parkas as well but I prefer the Conduit SL used in this style. Waterproof ability makes the jacket an all-purpose outerwear. Also, the hood keeps me very warm when wind chill factors are high.
Improves life
October 30, 2007
If you live someplace cold you should really consider buying this jacket. Since I bought mine and my husband bought his a month later we have become winter people. We are always on the go outside now. This jacket is lightweight and pretty windproof. We have been through a bit of rain with them as well and they hold up brilliantly. I have worn mine for years now and can really appreciate the workmanship. We would have bought one for our daughter but Mountain Hardwear hasnt yet caught on to the kids market. Buy it and you will not regret it.
Great Jacket!
July 29, 2007
I love this jacket! It is warm and compresses to a very small bundle for something so warm. I like that if I am in a hurry to step out of my tent I can simply use the "nameless sticky tabs" on the storm flap and not have to zip the jacket like many other down jackets. The hood is incredible and the fleece-lined collar is so soft against my chin. The length for me is terrific as it is long enough to keep my lower back nice and warm and the elastic drawband located at waist level (backside only) keeps the wind from shooting up my back and the only features that I would consider adding would be an outside pocket, like on the guy's version as gals really need those extra pockets, and pit zips for those of us that overheat in an instant. However, I have sewn an extra zippered pocket into the inside of my jacket and it has worked out fine. Overall I LOVE this jacket! This jacket I have purchased to replace one I have finally worn out....and it lasted a long time!
Best Down Jacket
January 02, 2006
This jacket is really incredible piece of clothing. The hood is very warm and also the jacket is waterproof and windproof. In addition, Sub Zero SL jacket looks very nice compared to other down jackets. You will not look exacly slim but you will not become the Michelin Man. This one I actually bought for my girlfriend after I bought exactly the same one for me. She is very satisfied and believe me she always complains about being cold. I can't wait to do some winter camping. My other friend actually bought the same one for him after doing some research and trying other brands.
